just went to a bike store by my house for oil and filter and he gave me 0w-30 synthetic motorcycle oil but my owners manual says use oil 10w-40.

is this fine to use?

only bike a young man will ever need is 250cc to 300 cc for best performance and fuel economy.

i need some advice

bike won't start. i know the trinity is "fuel, air, spark."

I'm not getting any spark. The lights work, and when I hit the start button, I can see the lights on the instrument cluster flicker. The starter doesn't engage.

The horn works, the lights work, but it's not starting. I had it hooked up to a starter which was plugged into a wall outlet and that didn't work either.

Fuses seem to be okay.

Thoughts?

should be alright if you have one strap underneath the seat and another above the seat, so the bags are held up a bit higher. Use a belt as well to hold the two handles together if it sags a little bit. This is what I do.

Good shout on getting saddlebags as well, they are insanely useful, far better than a top box imo.

When you click the start button, do you hear the starter solenoid knock? If not, that is the place to start. If you do, but don't hear the starter going over, it could be bad brushes or a short in the windings. Pull the starter and take it up to the auto-parts shop. Any of them should have a 12v starter tester to confirm it is bad. At that point you can replace it or have it rebuilt.

trying again, since my last post got no responces

So im having fuel problems on my 97 zx6

Ive got a new oem fuel pump relay on its way but im considering just putting a new pump in there to get rid of the shit oem pump.

My question is: does anyone have any experience with using mrgasket fuel pumps? specifically the 42s?

The OEM fuel pump is 300 bucks and im not spending that seeing as i got the bike for 800
Ive tried researching forums and it seems like it will work as long as I properly wire it like my old pump, but any ideas, suggestions, or tips would be amazingly appreciated.

Ive hoping to have this fucker back on the road by next week, so if it needs a pump I need to find a solution other than the OEM pump.

/dbt/ is full of nobikes, kids and broke tryhards on small bikes. All people who adore the idea of a motorcycle culture and probably think the wave is cool. Get real. My enjoyment of the hobby is based around me and my motorcycle, not any other dipshit on the road on two wheels. Can't you imagine how silly it must be for a grown man to be upset that someone else riding a motorcycle didn't wave back? Get real.

if the bike is doing not a damn thing when you hit the starter button, maybe you have a fucked up button or a wire that came loose. My buddy has a late 90s cbr, he has to hit his starter button a few times for it to make the connection for the bike to start.

to save yourself the hassle of buying and waiting for a new pump, is there a way you can test it? on the v-strom, you can lift the tank, pull the fuel supply hose (to the engine) out and cycle the fuel pressure primer to meaure how much fuel you get over so many primes. check a dedicated forum for more info, but that's where i'd start. if you have than optimal flow, your fuel filter is clogged.

as for aftermarket fuel pumps, i don't remember seeing anything good about a single one, but i'm pretty sure everyone is afraid to try cheap stuff incase it's crap

i find it odd that a wire came loose if i can see the lights flickering when i hit the start button. to my knowledge, that means that the button works but for some reason the starter isn't engaging.

>>17260775
looks like i'll be looking into the starter solenoid. Is that the device that clicks whenever a turn signal is used?
>>
>>17260923
I have barely tested it, I gave it 12v off the battery for about half a second and it did kick on, i know the pump works. No idea if im getting the fuel pressure I need. Ive got super limited tools currently. I used to have essentially a shops worth of tools, aaaannnnddd then someone broke into my garage and still damn near all my tools. I'm down to basic hand tools.

But back to the point, the pump does work, the fuel filter is brand new. I've just been considering throwing a new pump in there to save my self the hassle, know what I mean?

I'll call up some buddys and see if I they have any tools we can test the pressure and flow of the pump with.

Totally fine by me. I've got one well-used dual sport that takes care of the utilitarian aesthetic, and a super clean classic that satisfies my desire for lines.

Ratty sportbikes are infinitely ugly, but seeing as I'll probably end up putting it down a couple of times on the track, I want to get it out of the way with an ugly bike. Once I'm riding in the intermediate or advanced track day groups I'll get something prettier.

great call with the solenoid. I went back out to check and it looks like this thing is shot.

I cleaned the contacts with sandpaper and now the bike makes a humming noise when i hit the start button. additionally, the lights cut out and one of the terminals on this solenoid jumps up.

seems broken.

my question is, can i bypass this thing to start the bike just to see how it runs? if so, how do i do that? what is the point of this solenoid?

Holy shit /dbt/, why did I not buy a bike 20 years ago? Just got the bike running yesterday (CM250C guy), put like 10 miles on it yesterday and this morning doing some errands. And it was terrifying. Then tonight right at 5, I hopped on and just started tooling around. Just got home now, so that is almost 5 hours just bouncing back and forth between Mpls and St. Paul. Eventually got the balls to hop on the highway (not the interstate), and the little 233 can actually get up to 55 on a decent on-ramp. Beyond that it starts getting scary. Managed to take it to 72... Tucking in like a Moto GP, on the downhill of an overpass. 55 to 65 takes a good 15 seconds and some prayer.

My understanding is that the W number is only important for starting, but the first number really should match since it's the operating viscosity. Also I think you should avoid synthetic if it's not specified (since it might make your clutch slip).
>>
>>17262168
If the lever moves the arm on the case the cable is fine.
If the arm isn't pulling back something in your clutch is broken. Doesn't matter what part, because you have to pull it all apart to find out for sure anyways.

That is a bit harsh. He did what he could, kept four of us fed. We don't talk about Timmy, the fifth.

Pretty amazed by how much I improved over 5 about a hundred miles. Definitely need to work on hill starts (stalled it several times in the same spot with just enough slope that I needed to hold the brake to stay still). Other than that, I am opening up the close too soon when rolling on the throttle for a shift on the highway, keep going WOT VRROOOOOM as I shift.

really your first number doesnt particularly matter, as long as you dont go higher than 10 winter youll be fine.

What that number means is how viscous your oil behaves at the winter temperature ( which I think is 32 degrees), so essentially your recommended oil behaves like a 10 weight oil at 32 degrees and a 40 weight oil at operating temperature( generally 210ish degrees).

your first number can generally go lower than that without issue, but you should maintain a 40 operational temperature oil weight.

Too thick or thin at operating temperature and it wont protect your engine like it was designed.

A good portion of it. 95% can be done in a Jeep, maybe 75% in a Subaru.
I did the GPSKevin free version, not Sam's official version.

PA was cool, some single track and real trails.
Virginia's border was pretty good too, lots of remote mountains, mostly just super twisty gravel roads though which gets old.
NC and TN both sucked a lot, just zig zagging on dirt roads to stay off the highway, not worth it at all.
Mississippi and Arkansas were pretty cool too, some really beautiful scenery and the TAT shack.
Oklahoma and Kansas blow of course.
CO and UT were my favorite two, unreal scenery, lots of real trails, Imogene Pass, the Arctic Loop, pretty difficult terrain at times.
NV fucking sucked, remote sand pits 100 miles from civilization for you to die in, then cool but boring at that point highlands.
Corner of CA was nice, some trails.
Oregon was unreal, lots of trails and unmaintained roads being reclaimed by nature.

If I could do it again I would skip everything from Asheville, NC to Trinidad, CO, or just do the part on one side of that.
>>
>>17262480
And by skip I mean fly, or rent a Uhaul and take a rest day of shift driving with my m8.
>>
>>17262480
nevada is just a series of sandpits separated by big fucking hills.
>>
>>17262480

>>
>>17262420
no gays allowed in this thread (lol)
>>
>>17262489
The first thing you do on the trail when you get into NV after getting gas in Baker, is turn off the highway onto what appears to be a four wheeler path up the side of one of those hills, then you go down into a big ass valley with no roads or anything in it and ride through sand pits through this little scrub forest in the 95F heat for 80 miles, then you go up another barely existent two track over another big hill, and come down to get gas in a town who's gas station has closed within the past 5 years.

>>17262495
The trail is just looooong flat straight dirt roads that go along the side of the highway, but have turns every few miles because they're around fields and shit.
The highway is just straight and flat for as far as the eye can see, for two days straight if you can barely do 55mph.

2 questions

Are power figures for bikes based off power at the wheel or the engine?

And how much power does a bike lose between the crank and the wheel?
>>
Didn't know that motorcycle batteries can't be tested using a car battery tester. Has driving around like an idiot earlier today to every auto parts store near my area and everyone keeps turning me down. Found a motorcycle store by accident and they tested t . Guy from the shop was trying to sell me some space age Shorai Lithium Battery for $375, had to say nope on that one. Picked up a Yuasa for $65 on ebay instead.

Anyone know why the acid is on a separate container on the Yuasa batteries? And does it matter if the battery is an old stock or new stock? Since I bought it from ebay there is no way to tell if the battery new stock.
>>
>>17262740
>Are power figures for bikes based off power at the wheel or the engine?
Yes.

>And how much power does a bike lose between the crank and the wheel?
7.
>>
>>17262740
They usually advertise crank output, not output to the wheel.

power losses depend on the bike and what kind of final drive.

Chain>Belt>Shaft.
>>
>>17262740
Engine
10-15%
>>
>>17262740
>Are power figures for bikes based off power at the wheel or the engine?
depends on where the quoted figure comes from. A lot of times motorcycles dont have manufacturer quoted power figures. If they do they are engine power figures.

Typically you'll see power figures from magazines. These are based on a chassis dyno and are wheel horsepower figures.
>>
>>17262740
Depends, always assume its crank though unless it's on a dyno sheet. Drivetrain loss depends on the drivetrain, shaft is usually around 20%, chain is around 10%, belt is like 5-10%.
>>
>>17262042

But its beat to shit. It looks like its got a bad ignition coil, a slow leak in the front tire and it doesn't have an air filter.
Once it runs, i can get it to the dmv for the title transfer and then i can start actually making it nice

nice; that's the first year they sold in the US so it's not exactly rare or nothing but i'd call it collectible.

Make sure to check the drive belt too; There are no variations or gears just the single speed.

And if you're doing the coil why not crack the head and check the rings too; you'll have to pull off the fairings anyway so give it a nice and proper rebuild and the smallest scoot in the nicest shape.

Lead acid batteries are shipped dry so that they don't have to be charged and maintained by the vendor. Once the acid has been added, you have to keep the battery charged up or the plates will begin to suffer from sulphation.

Yuasa's official statement is that their dry conventional batteries have an infinite shelf-life so long as the foil seals over the cells are unbroken. IIRC they are nitrogen purged at the factory.
