I have a rudimentary knowledge.
My uncle is a blacksmith and has been for 70 years.
He taught me a bit.

Speaking of welding. I really want to learn. I keep trying to take classes at my local community it college but with my work schedule it will take me 3 years of summer courses and I always forgot and register late.
Friend said he will teach me to weld. Should I just man up and buy a welder? Friend is suggesting the 1-2k ones which seems a bit steep to me, but I can afford it. Should I just buy one and start practicing?

Buy something used, then just practice on old steel, welding L-shapes, holes and whatnot
