Project Car Edition

Does it make sense? Who cares!

Rust and rot is ALWAYS the most expensive thing to repair.

Pic related is my $600.00 Rolls Royce.
>>
rust is expensive? no i think the engine was.

in my 69 mustang the body looked fine except the hood was bent because of the hinge spring.
however the 302 cracked above the cam all the way to the back of the block. that turned expensive fast.

If you Check Forums ( especially US Forums) its not that expensive.
"Just Go to your local scrapyard"
I live in Germany so every Part that was Missing ( quite a few in retrospect) I had to ship in.
All around I think I payed 2500€ to 3000€ for everything.
Fresh rebuilt a833 Lakewood bellhousing Hurst shifter and everything + hydramax hydraulic clutch assembly.

I got my $300 280ZX running a few months back. Only took a new battery, fuel pump, injectors and an oils pressure switch. I also swapped out a lot of old fuel and coolant lines as well as remade a few hard lines that are no longer sold. I also replaced the radiator cap and thermostat, and ran a few coolant treatments to get rid of the rusty crap inside. Water pump and fan clutch seem ok

Right now I'm in the process of overhauling the braking system. I replaced the master cylinder already and I'm getting the pads, rotors and brake hoses. Hopefully the calipers are ok but they're cheap to replace if not.

After all that, I'm gonna take it in to get a new clutch and flywheel, and do the rear main seal while I'm. Ack there. Beyond that, some new tires and it should be road ready

well i'd say bodywork. like paint, straightening it, metal obv, ect..

then maybe the engine if you just have a simple one.

i've got a ford prefect 100e from '54 and i think in total bodywork costs it will be about 5k €

while the engine is maybe just 2k €

I own many cars:

1966 Imperial
1967 Rolls Royce
1978 Excalibur
1979 Lincoln
1981 DeLorean
1984 Fiero

The Rolls Royce will be, eventually, restored and set up as a daily driver or cross-county tourer; some modern upgrades paired with a few swapped parts so that it makes financial sense to drive it.

Otherwise, I was going to make it into a Mad Max inspired post-apocalypric raider car.
>>
>>17243118
I was going to grab a used gearbox and flywheel and then maybe get one of dem kits.

I don't want to spend 4 grand if i can do it cheaper with available parts but there are some parts that i might not know about.
Anyway good on you.

You're going to be down more than that from the countless swaps you yourself have claimed you're going to do instead of getting what you want in the first place but no don't listen to /ccg/ just like last time when it took you over two weeks to get your truck running after we told you time and again what the fucking problem was.
>>
>>17243644
Because factory 351 heads aren't that good and factory GT40p heads are decent enough.

And aftermarket heads are expensive.

>>17243648
See even you yourself understand how ridiculous it could be with my masterful knowledge to spend 4k on a basic bolt on swap into my ford.

>>
>>17243660
>See even you yourself understand how ridiculous it could be with my masterful knowledge to spend 4k on a basic bolt on swap into my ford.
it was even more ridiculous that you were going to pull and engine and not even take it apart to make sure it never overheated.
face it, you're a rookie.
The only reason i'm telling you this is because i care about you babe and i don't want you to blow money on a 5.slow when you could just as easily get a better engine for cheaper.
>>
>>17243668
I'd have to machine the bolt holes and whatnot (not that big of a deal), and then id have to get the two items separately which is more of a pain then what I want to deal with.

I'd rather buy one engine, modify it and then put it in the truck. Down the road, like a few years from now, I'll probably go the 351 based route but for now, like I said, this is the cheapest way to 300hp.

>>17243685
Y'all were absolutely correct about that. I'm also assuming after researching that it's a lot easier to replace valve springs on a head that is off the block than one that is still attached
>>
>>17243635

How to not get ripped off when I'm looking to get into classic cars but never grew up around them? I might be going from < $30K a year to 200K, and aside from crypto currency, index funds, savings, and maybe real estate I have had no clue what I would even spend it all on.

The idea of classic cars is coming from "buying" my grandfather's 55 Bel Air. It's his dream car but he wants to sell it. Assuming I get the job (big assumption, but that money is making me daydream), I would just pay him what he's asking for it and he would just keep it in his possession to cruise around until he passes. I figure that's the least I could do

This got me looking at other cars, and I like the idea of driving something classic that I've bought, but knowing nothing about the labor or available parts how the fuck would I make sure I'm not getting screwed? Especially with this stuff becoming more niche and the information seems like it'll just become harder to come by. For example, say I wanted a 69 GTO with a blower and (hidden) modern sound system; who the hell do I talk to to get that done that wouldn't just try and get the most money out of me?

Finally got a decent deal on an original fan shroud so I'm hoping that'll finally fix my overheat at idle issue. Also I was curious if maybe the timing could be causing the issue too. I heard that if you switch the vacuum advance from a carb port to a manifold port that always has vacuum it might help it run a bit cooler. Would that help?
>>
>>17244768
I've never seen much difference either way but I always made sure the cooling system on my cars worked. I also preferred to run ported vacuum so that when you cracked the throttle you also got 10+ degrees of timing for a nice little tip-in punch with an automatic. Still, it's something for you to try. It won't change the base or the total timing of course but you will have to lower the idle speed since it'll idle a bit faster with the increased timing at idle.

if you get the throttle cable, fuel line, and the five wires disconnected, it really is only four bolts.

>>
>>17244833

>>17244826
Dude you need to space that fan out so it's under the shroud.

Oh, and when's the last time you replaced the water pump? If that thing ever had plain water in it the impeller blades might be rusted down to nubs and won't pump water at idle.
>>
>>17244842
Overheating at low speeds or stops is lack of airflow. The biggest radiator in the world won't stop an overheat if there's no airflow to carry the heat away.
>>
>>17244842
put an electric fan on there and ditch the fixed blade and youll pick up ~20hp and get proper cooling,
>>
>>17246558
>lack of airflow
That "shroud" is blocking the fan from much of the radiator.
>>
>>17247003
The shroud also forces air to be sucked though the radiator instead of just being pushed around the engine bay

>>
>>17247267
Not unless you had a Carter AFB or AVS stock.

>>17247569
Yes. Yes they are. What they do is jam as much impeller as will fit in the housing, either adding a few vanes over stock, or using long spiral vanes instead of straight.
>>
>>17247267
depends on what you are looking for. do you want performance? buy Holley. do you want reliability and not have to tinker with your carb constantly? buy Edelbrock.
>>
>>17247913
Because believe it or not when someone pays 10s of thousands of dollars for something they don't just give it away. Even to family. Retired people live on fixed incomes. Money doesn't come often to them
>>
>>17247267

>>17247482

>>

>>17248325
update, My header gaskets came in the mail today and it helped reduce the ticking that was already there but they still don't seal the best. It did lower the volume of the ticking noise on the passenger side but it's still kinda there. I used a piece of fuel line as a sort of stethoscope to pinpoint the sound but it was no where near the headers. It sounded kinda like it was coming from around the distributor, possibly an echo from the loose exhaust pipe that goes into the header collector and also another ticking noise is for sure coming from the front around the waterpump so that may verify there is something wrong with it.
>>
>>17250403
Are you sure it's not just noisy lifters?
Have you looked at the rotor under the cap to see if something is bent?
>>
>>17250512
I pulled the valve covers off and the rockers and push rods were not loose but I'll take the cap off and see if there is anything bent under the distributor. The ticking is pretty darn quiet though but it's pretty tough to pinpoint. Also If it is a lifter what are my options?
>>
>>17250619
try using thicker oil or some Lucas Oil on the next oil change, or do nothing. Noisy lifters aren't a problem unless you have a collapsed lifter and then the tick is really noticeable
>>
>>17250619
How's your oil level? And what weight oil are you using?
>>
>>17250655
I'll try that when I change the oil soon because it's about time. It's also been doing it for awhile since I figured it was an exhaust leak and put off getting new gaskets.
>>17250697 I'm using 10w30 and it's full, it even runs 40 psi at cold idle and gets to around 60 (close to the inbetween notch from 40 to 80 on the gauge) on the highway.
>>
>>17250726

>>17242954

>>17250733
it's an olds 403. I'm hoping she'll last long enough until I find a Pontiac 400 to swap in. I daily drove it since last august but only to work mostly so no real long trips.
>>
>>17250754
It couldn't hurt to throw in a thicker oil. I had to do that for the 300 to stop a mold tick
>>
>>17250765
I'll give it a try, a few weeks ago I overheated the hell out of it on accident from traffic and I thought it was a collapsed lifter but I added more oil (was a bit low) and it made no difference. The header gaskets made it quieter at least or maybe the exhaust leak was just masking the sound.

Hydraulic lifters, yes?

Dump some extra detergents in the oil when you do the change. They're usually by the stop leak.
CD2 has worked for me in the past but you might have better results with something else.

If that don't do it, then it's time to pull the lifters, disassemble them and clean 'em out.
>>
>>17251344
why would you clean out lifters if you're going through the effort of taking them out in the first place? Literally no point, might as well get new lifters instead

So question for you guys; what exactly makes a car a classic?
My old man said the 93 Explorer 2 door I found is a classic, but is that just him using a figure of speech or is there an actual definition?
>>
>>17251387
Because a set of lifters for his engine is $55 online before shipping. It's not nearly worth the time and effort to clean 16 of them. I guarantee 99% of everyone else here would agree
They're lifters. They are not special.

>>
>>17251399
It is really in the eye of the beholder. usually it is older, outdated, but appeals to a specific group. a base model 2wd 86 ford ranger with a 4 cylinder isn't a classic, but a mint 86 4x4 V6 ranger with a 5 speed is.

Current daily, probably will be that way for some time. Found it in the desert just east of Tahoe, owner had passed away and I bought it from his son who knew nothing about it. 170k on the clock. Everything is pretty well sorted. It's a 4spd car. Valves were in adjustment, so I'm assuming someone cared for it. I went through and replaced fuel lines, checked timing, purged it, changed filters and oil. Has a block heater on it. Had a trunk full of spares- even had good snow tires on it. I've put 4k miles on it so far. It had a couple bad glow plugs and burnt the fuse for that circuit. Had enough compression to start cold anyway. $40 cl Thule rack for carrying lumber (I do woodworking on weekends) and some $20 rally armor flaps because I'm a colossal fag. (Don't worry, I used existing holes and clips, no destruction required to mount them).

I'm pretty sure I could run 70 mph nonstop across the entire US and it wouldn't give two fucks.

It had some aftermarket JVShit head unit in it. I found an old becker from a W124 in a junkyard. Got it $15. Took it home and cleaned it up and put it in. Nice 240d anon. I had a 82 stick 240d and kinda regret selling it. It had a rotted front+rear suspension, needed a heater core & the a/c fixed and I just wasn't up for it and drove it as a beater for a while.

My commute was 45 miles on a highway with everyone going 75-80, plus pulling out on a busy 45mph street all the time. Not really fun in a 240d.

Thanks anon. Mines an '81. Yeah rot seems to be the only thing that kills them other than complete and utter neglect. I have no issue with 70-75 with this one. I don't pull out in front of people, but it's super happy cruising. Even gets solid mpgs. I'd love to pick up another that's tired and put a 606 turbo in it, I'd probably go full blasphemy and use a 9" Ford rear end and find a TKO or Magnum Tremec transmission. Thanks for the offer anon, it's a beautiful looking car. I don't have the room right now though. Between the wife and I we have 4 cars, and only enough garage for 2. We're moving in a few months, and I have a (pos) chevy sonic I'm trying to sell, and a VW to restore. Afterwards maybe I'll be in the market. I appreciate it though.
>>
>>17254279

>Between the wife and I we have 4 cars, and only enough garage for 2.

I hear you there. I'm actually selling it to free up garage space myself. My wife recently got into motorcycles which got me going on bikes again. Went from having 1 in the garage tucked behind the SL, to 4 between us occupying a full half of the garage. There's probably 1-2 more on the horizon this year, too. 3 cars is just too many with 4-6 bikes as well.

It's been a fantastic car, and I really do like it. Used it as a daily driver for almost two years, for road trips after that. Now it only gets love on the weekends, and only when I'm not out riding instead at that.

I'm cleaning it pretty autistically now, inside and out as a sacrificial rite. I'll take it on one last cruise before putting it up on ebay / craigslist.

Another update, I may have found my source of the sound but I'm still not 100% sure. This pipe is loose going into the header flange and I think it's making the ticking noise and echoing up the firewall. I practically climbed in the engine bay to locate the ticking since it's coming from the distributor area. I might try sealing this up and see if that helps, is there some sort of gasket that fits on there? Also both sides are like this.
>>
>>17247482
Contrary to popular opinion, fans pull air from the radiator, not push it toward it. The shroud directs the fan to pull air only from the radiator instead of everywhere.

Yes, welding slag.

>>
>>17255370
>The shroud directs the fan to pull air only from the radiator instead of everywhere.
equally important it stops the fan from throwing hot air right at your intake.
>>
>>17255371
Will do, I really hope this solves my ticking and isn't a lifter since it got a bit quieter with the header gaskets and the ticking is almost in time with the exhaust.
>>17255370

I just recovered the dash pad the other day by myself. Stripped the old covering, bondo'd, sanded, re-foamed, and then recovered for a thicker plushier dash with a nice vinyl (leather sythesis) wrap. I havent towed anything long distance, but everything I've but on the ball thats on the bumper has been fine (mostly boats) but mind the tongue cap thats engraved in the bumper. I think its limit isnt all that big.

The only thing you'll feel bad about is towing something heavy from a stop up a hill. The clutch will smell, that 4.0 isnt all that powerful, so mind the weight.

New Project, 76 Camaro with a pontiac 6.6 slammed into it some time in the 80s.

Just bought this in South Carolina, essentially sight unseen. Last inspected in 1996, hadn't run in years and was sitting under a tree on cinder blocks.

Put a battery in it, one heater hose, top up some fluids and poured some gas down the carb. She fired up and smoked like a pig for a few minutes, then made a 5 hour drive north, up the cumberland gap, through the fucking mountains, and into Virginia without one hiccup. Tough old bitch.

I've build a small fiberglass boat, the key is sanding, you just have to keep applying thin skim coats of filler and sanding it down with the longest sanding block you have. The most important thing is to have the block be longer than the repair area so that you can't make a depression on the repair area.

So, not a classic but this is the only thread I bother to post in. I just finished doing the head gaskets on an 03 Impala I essentially got for free. However I'm pulling a "random multiple cylinder misfire" code. Anybody know anything about that? Battery is completely shot also, so no more running it today.

79 Trans am dude again, I'm genuinely worried because I found some milky substance under the oil fill tube cap and the oil on the dipstick had a little bit of white in it if you held it to the light. Could it just be condensation because It doesn't smell like antifreeze plus I'm seeing no coolant loss ? it's been super hot and humid plus my garage stays really cold so that may produce some condensation. The other possibility is that it rained really hard while the car was outside. Could an intake leak let water into the oil?

Could be something as simple as bad plugs. I've seen bad plugs cause it to run just barely bad enough to throw a code. Check coil (or plug) boots too, make sure they're not ripped. But as the others said, could be bad gaskets or bad head/block still causing a small leak.

For both of you, check this out: https://www.ebay.com/p/?iid=112219321782&&&dispItem=1&ul_ref=http%253A%252F%252Frover.ebay.com%252Frover%252F1%252F711-117182-37290-0%252F2%253Fmpre%253Dhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.ebay.com%25252Fitm%25252Flike%25252F112219321782%25253Fchn%25253Dps%252526dispItem%25253D1%2526itemid%253D112219321782%2526targetid%253D340521013887%2526device%253Dm%2526adtype%253Dpla%2526googleloc%253D9027272%2526poi%253D%2526campaignid%253D764892186%2526adgroupid%253D39783961149%2526rlsatarget%253Daud-310176692042%253Apla-340521013887%2526abcId%253D978836%2526merchantid%253D6296724%2526gclid%253DCLK30vjMjNQCFY-BaQodyU8Kbg%2526srcrot%253D711-117182-37290-0%2526rvr_id%253D1219017453234&chn=ps

It tests for combustion gas in the cooling system. Drain the radiator just enough so that there's its empty in the top and coolant won't bubble up. Place the test tube where te radiator cap goes, pour test fluid into the tube. Let the engine run for a coupleminutes then use the bulb on top of the tube to suck air into it from the radiator. If combustion gas is present, it will turn piss yellow.
>>

Plugs and wires are brand new, as is the radiator, hoses, thermostat, and all gaskets from the heads up. The coil packs are original, I'll have to test them tomorrow. Thanks for the insight

Also, hook up a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold. If the needle stays steady, 99% chance the valves are okay. If the needle is bouncing around, 99% your misfire is due to burned or out of time valve.

I can't remember, is that a pushrod or ohc motor? Did you have to reset timing with head gaskets?

GM, Mopar, & import guy here. Never been into Fords, but man, there's something about the Maverick that I really like. There's a reasonably priced Grabber and also the standard versions that can easily have the 305 swapped in for cheap. I can get on & a 305 for under 4k, not sure if I should pull the trigger. Thoughts?
>>
>>17268577
Be prepared to spend twice that. I've messed with several 70s trucks (Ford, not that it's relevant), and I always end up 2x or more over budget.

That's how it is with classic cars. I bought my 78 Bronco for 2500. I expected to put another 3000 into it and be done, for a total of 5500. I'm currently at 8500 and still climbing.

Getting close to being done for how I want it. I estimate it'll be another 1500 or 2000 before it's done and I'm not even painting it.
>>
>>17269592
What have you been spending the money on? If it's rust, then you bought the wrong car.
>>
>rust is ALWAYS the most expensive thing to repair

>harbor freight grinder and wheel $20
>harbor freight pop rivet gun $10
>patch panel cut at junkyard with nibbler $5
>rust converter and inhibitor $35
>silicone/latex caulk $10

What did he mean by this
My new carpet costs more than my entire floor repair and it's only $170 even with mass backing

>>17269645
I think maybe he means that rust in weird places or just an absurd amount of it can add up quickly. A floor/trunk is easy but damn I wouldn't want to fuck with a roof or a fender if there were no panels or donor cars close by.
Good on you though for doing it yourself! I wouldn't attempt it myself.

A lot of engine work. Overhauled transmission and t-case. A lot of preventative replacement like I did the entire brake system. A lot of random shit like the fuel tank was rusted through. The interior was falling apart, so I bought corbeau seats and carpet and weatherstrips, etc.

Alll of that shit adds up. I'm going through the truck stem to stern.
>>
>>17269645
I'm pretty sure he meant having a body shop fix the rust for you.

Rust work isn't thar expensive for materials, it's just labor intensive.
>>
>>17270108
Also to clarify, I didn't mean a lot of shit is rusted through on my truck, just the gas tank and a small spot on the lr fender. The rest is solid. Although I am afraid to strip the bed liner off the exterior and see what's underneath. All the seams are solid and the metal behind and underneath is solid but I'm not sure if the bed liner is covering up any hidden body work I can't see.

So I went and looked at this 1969 Ford Torino.

It's in pretty decent shape, the exterior has been semi restored, it could be touched up in a few places, but its solid. The interior is pretty much mint minus a crack in the drivers seat. biggest thing is that it doesn't love going into reverse, I think it needs a neutral safety switch, a wiper motor and a carb tune up. Should I cop? It's the nicest thing I've seen in my budget. It has the classic muscle car aesthetic and that glorious V8 rumble...
>>
>>17272550
>biggest thing is that it doesn't love going into reverse
Auto or manual? Most Ford auto's from that time are a bit harsh in Reverse. The C4 notably so.

If the price is right there's no reason you shouldn't get it other that rust. That's about the only real deal killer.

>>17272569
It's the auto, I'm glad to here its a thing and not just an abused transmission. I'm so tempted its ridiculous!

Well I had a hell of an issue a week or so ago. Impala just up and quit running. In two days I replaced the fuel pump and rebuilt the carb only find it still wouldn't run. Finally checked the fuel and it was terrible. Ended up pumping over 4 gallons of water out of the fuel tank. I didn't keep the receipt from my last fuel up, despite knowing the time and date (Thanks to my AAA call), so the gas station won't come good for it. Last time I ever fill up there.

79 Trans am dude with another update. We found out it's not a lifter tick and got the exhaust welded solving the issue. In the process we found out the intake manifold gasket has a leak at the front. Luckily there's not any coolant in the oil. I've got an edelbrock aluminum intake and was curious what gaskets to use since summit has the big "turkey tray" or the individual gaskets. I'm no expert on these so what should I use?

Take the intake off and see what was used on it. For aftermarket, its usually the individual, and turkey trays are normally for stock intakes. I think. Not too much experience with Pontiac engines. I know my Buick 455 with the stock intake takes the turkey tray.
>>
>>17282992
Also, if you use the individuals, do not use the rubber gaskets it comes with for the front and back of the valley. Use a thick bead of silicone. Those rubber seals never work and usually just squish out or into the valley.
>>
>>17283099
I was hoping someone had already done this so I didn't have to take my manifold off yet. Anyway, I'll take it off tomorrow and look. Also is there any benefit over using the rubber gaskets instead of the turkey tray or vice versa?
