So there's been talk about my province (Ontario) reintroducing photo radar. We had it many years ago and it was abolished because it was shit.

Our communist government sees it as a lucrative cash grab and wants to bring it back, phasing it in with "school zones" and "community safety areas" first.

Anyhow, I figure it's time to look at buying a radar detector, considering everyone will be getting tickets for going 5kmh over the speed limit. I'm not a chronic speeder, but I usually do about 10kmh over the posted limit. Cops always used their discretion, and it was understood that if you were doing 10 over they turned a blind eye, but anything more and you were fair game. Photo radar doesn't do that - it's calibrated to nab you if you're even 1km over, and in the past they had it set to issue tickets for anyone doing 5kmh over.

Anyone have experience with radar detectors? Specifically, in places where they're not allowed? I'd need something that is undetectable, but will help alert me to speed traps/photo radar. I know most don't defend against LIDAR, but it's about risk management at this point. All unmanned systems still use K-Band AFAIK, and I can defend against it with a detector.

Also no jamming is required, I just want passive defense. Best brands, models, features, etc. to look for? Any way to rig it up covertly so it can't be seen in my vehicle? Or does it need to be mounted high and visible on the windshield?

Any advice/help is appreciated.

I remember hearing about some spree in the UK where guys trashed like 1,000 speed cameras in a very short period of time. Not sure if it actually did anything, other than cost taxpayers more money to replace the cameras, but it made me realize that I'm tired of getting fucked left and right by this government. I'm not looking to start street racing, but if you give them an inch they'll take a fucking mile. That's how it is in Ontario.

Also forgot to post link to relevant article:

ONTARIANS OF LEGAL VOTING AGE, CONSIDER THIS SHIT WHEN YOU VOTE IN THE NEXT PROVINCIAL ELECTION.

Even if you're in agreement with photo radar, more tickets WILL be issued because of it. Insurance companies will use this data to increase auto insurance rates for EVERYONE, especially people living in areas with higher ticket issuance.

I have a radar detector but hell I don't remember the brand but they're decent, not always reliable it just gives me peace of mind. It's better at picking up speed traps than actual police but it does pick them up as well just not as often or efficient

Are they legal where you are? If I ended up getting one, I'd almost certainly have to rig it in such a way that it can't be seen from the outside. Was thinking of rigging some headliner console to hide it, but ideally it'd be concealed in the dash/under hood somewhere.
>>
>>17234027
yea in most states they're legal so I have no problem, but for you if you have to rig it that would be pretty difficult, unless you like cut out a spot in your dash where it can still have no interference and you can read what it says
>>
>>17233999
so fucking true, take it from an australian.

do not give them a fucking INCH. they will lie and make up statistics (i'm not kidding here they got caught literally inventing bullshit to push more cameras).

you get done for 3km/h over here and its like a 200 dollar fine.

If they're actually illegal and the cops are going to use radar detector detectors (actually a real thing) you'll need to shell out for an escort redline ($400). If you want to rig it so it can't be seen, look at radar mirrors, who hide the detector in your headrest and put a remote display in your rearview mirror. In any case, it won't be as cheap as you probably think if you actually want to get away with something illegal
>>
>>17233968
You can get a detector hard wired into your car so a light and any pertinent information appears somewhere around your gauge cluster. Definitely discrete but not likely to be a cheap option.
>>
>>17234108
I can vouch for escort. I have a Max 360 that saves my ass from jail time at least once a week.

Holy shit that's pretty bad. Here the minimum fine is like $35, plus a certain amount for each KM over the speed limit. We have brackets, the first is 0-15kmh over, then 15-29 I believe, and then 30-49. If you're 50kmh over any posted limit, automatic impound of the car and lose your license for a while because STREET RACING.

I've gotten two larger tickets in my life, and it caused me to smarten up and not speed so much. But our limits are so artificially low to begin with (they've been the same limits for the past 50 years), and cars are safer/faster than they've ever been.

There's no justification for the limits and increased ticketing, and I'm not going to be their bitch.

>>17234053

I may just try to move to BC/Alberta, detectors are legal out there. No jamming allowed, but at least they recognize your right not to get totally assfucked.
>>
>>17234140
here you lose your license at 25km/h over...

never give them an inch, they're now proposing making every 100 zone into a 80 zone.

these commie fucks won't stop until cars are banned and they've taken away freedom of movement. slowly but surely is how they work.

Fuck, my local council recently dropped most of our speed limits. About 10 years ago they were all 80kmh zones, then they dropped to 70kmh because some councillors were fishing for votes. They capitalized on the dimwitted hicks and stay-at-home moms who had nothing better to do than complain about commuters driving past their home (keep in mind these are highways, not side streets).

About 3 weeks ago they dropped all the 70 zones to 60kmh zones, and designated them "community safety" areas. That means PHOTO RADAR will be allowed in these areas.

>>17234122

This is effectively what I wanted. Something I can link into my dash and just transmit an audible signal with some flashing light.

>>17234108

I would need something that can shut itself off if it detects countermeasures like RDD. It sucks that they've made everything so expensive and outlawed it. They're literally trying to make us fucking slaves.

Last fall my co-worker even got a ticket for flashing oncoming motorists, to warn them of a speed trap. Cop said "you can't have alternating white lights on your vehicle hurrr", even though it was ticket based purely out of spite. Co-worker is still fighting the ticket, he's had his trial date bumped twice because the cop cancelled his appearances. They used to scrap a ticket if the cop didn't show up to trial, but now they get a million chances to waste your time

Excessive speed is defined as driving 25 kilometres an hour or more above the speed limit, or at 130 kilometres an hour or more (if the speed limit is 110 kilometres per hour).
- 3825 / 310,708 * 100 = 1.231%
- Only 1.231% of motorists fined were fined for excessive speeds

- 301 / 310,708 * 100 = 0.0969%
- Only 0.0969% of motorists fined exceeded speed by 45km/h or more.

- 239,501 / 310,708 * 100 = 77.082%
- 77.082% of motorists fined were fined for speeding by less than 10km/h

Note several facts here.

>0.096 of motorists are actually speeding properly, the rest are people doing inconsequential speeds in a modern car
>All their research stems from one place, MUARC.
>As muarc depends on govt funding to stay afloat, there is clear bias which discredits their work as the researchers have no job if they present evidence which would result in govt funding being cut

We have the same horseshit politics playing here in Ontario. The police never used to get an revenue from the tickets they wrote, but they changed it so each department/service collects a percentage of fines. The more fines they collect, the more money they make. There could not be a more clear conflict of interest, and yet our faggot fuck province continues this nonsense as if nothing is wrong.

Honestly the reason they scrapped photo radar years ago was because it didn't do anything to promote/help public safety. It didn't reduce collisions or injuries, it only resulted in bigger profits for the province and the insurance companies.

The majority of people exceed the posted limit by 5-10kmh, and cops never used to care. I hate that my government always cites nonsense like your story too, and says "LOOK THEY BANNED ALL GUNS IN AUSTRALIA IT MUST BE A GOOD THING HUE HUE HUE". Even worse is when they cite Europe, a true liberal shithole at this point. Australia and Canada can still be turned around, but we need to vote heavily to do it. Too bad current governments have made importing voters a priority.
>>
>>17234238
i think they cite muarc's evidence overseas. remember it's discredited research.

muarc is not held to proper scientific standards and has serious bias, call them out if you ever see the name used for "research".
