I'm seriously considering it, since Portland is just across the river from Washington. It'd be about two hours to Olympia and then probably another 45 minutes or so to Buckley for the second meet. It's doable, in theory, but I'd probably head home from Elbe.

The first location is a little too far, though. Alas, I've never heard of an Oregon meet, so this would be as close as I could get to one.
>>
>>17223172
Would be sweet to see an Oregon bro up here. Is the car scene down there dead?
>>
>>17223188
I'm not really sure, since I'm new to it. But there's only a handful of /o/tists here, and I don't know if they fall prey to the old Oregon mindset of "leave me alone" that used to be very prevalent around here.

It's split between stancefags who have meets like the Red Door Meet every Sunday in Portland, and ancientfags who have classics. There are a few fun hillclimbs every year. Part of the problem is that every good road in the state is clogged with tourists, until you get way out east.

This is my first 240, so I'm learning as I go. Most of my problems are minor, besides the oil leak. Timing belts squeak a bit, ventilation system squeaks too, no handbrake cable, rear demister doesn't work well, one of the reverse taillights is out... That's actually all there is, so maybe half a dozen instead of a dozen things to fix. Got a tachometer in the mail because I like to see what my engine is doing.

I'm astounded that two /o/tists bought the same year, same color, same model of car at the same time and then ended up in the same thread, though. What are the odds?

>As of right now it is bring your own food
In the past, "Mr Snacks" (whoever he is) brought various "unique" snacks and drinks. However, he liked organic or healthy snacks mostly. Never thought I'd see a GREEN labeled "eco" coca-cola with fair trade sugar?

>>17223104
>Also no one fucking bring brownies
On a previous meet, the aforementioned Mr Snacks brought another unique thing appropriate for an /o/ theme. They were "racing brownies" endorsed by that famous female race car driver. Not just endorsed of course, they were organic and even featured pictures of the race car so they were on topic food items. But organic anything is unpopular and those were not a hit with the crowd who were more interested in the MR2.

>Isn't all that stuff super expensive?
Hi, hi, I'm "Mr Snacks". Glad to see there is a thread for Meets again.

They're not expensive. It's just an occasional indulgence. I think of Meets as experiencing new things, so I picked up snacks with that in mind since I get to try some new things too to see if I like them or not. I'll stop with trying to bring unique or interesting snacks now because people wouldn't eat them! The common complaint was all organic, all natural, no preservatives, or "good for you" type labels meant the food is going to be less delicious than foods full of preservatives and flavor-enhancing ingredients. Okay, I admit after trying those "racing car" brownies, that was a miss.

The most popular snacks people have eaten at the Meets aren't the unique ones. It's the old tried and true gas station or convenience store foods. So I guess I will defer to those.

>Could any of you Washington bros recommend some nice scenic twisties and detours I could take along the way?

Don't forget that Boeing has tours of their jet airplane assembly factory in Everett. Check ahead of time for reservation tickets on those tours. There are unique things like that you'll not find elsewhere in the USA. Or even more ordinary things like the USA's biggest library that is built completely over a river. That is the KCLS library in Renton (kcls.org).

hey, thanks for bringing all the snacks to the meets, not sure if we collectively said thanks or not before.
but dont worry about shelling out a bunch to feed us either. the most useful thing may just be a cooler of ice for everyone to toss drinks and junk in at the start since not everyone has cargo space in their cars or coolers

For the June 10th Meet, I recommend the direction we choose for the loop have the cliff on our right side. That gives us the best chance of falling off the cliff for maximum excitement!. Just Kidding....

Anyways, with a loop path, I'm wondering which direction of travel has the most scenic views for the driver on the whole loop path.
>>
>>17236278
Well, I'm pretty sure what's on my roof is house paint, so it's coming off eventually. I'm mainly focusing on mechanical issues at this point, the many cosmetic issues are secondary.
>>
>>17240188
>drive both directions
>profit
>>
>>17240188
For the June 24th Meet, looking at the terrain contour map for the loop route, it seems that most of the higher elevations on the loop have the cliff side on either the east or northeast side. So that means the chance of having scenic views down a cliff edge (not blocked by trees) is more likely at those positions on the loop route.

The south and west sides are mostly the lower elevations which probably have views full of trees. So it doesn't matter as much in those spots if the driver's side window has a cliff or not to look out over the landscape.
>>
>>17240561
>or choose better the first time
>do it once instead of twice
>time and fuel savings
>profit

In the past, Paradise parking lot fills up early from people who probably arrive there by 9AM. A late start can mean parking anywhere is full except for that one rest stop on the northern part of the loop.
>>
>>17242266
This. Our meet will be happening right after tourist season really kicks in, so unless we're all willing to get up at 5 AM (2 AM for this Portlander) then finding space along the loop will be an issue. At least if it's anything like our tourist hotspots in summer.

That's because the first few pack members are able to pass that Corvette going the speed limit (since the pack normally drives slightly aggressively fast). After 5 or 6 of you pass, that driver gets irritated and goes to cockblock mode driving.

This webm reminded me of that one time someone else (not any of us) was passing and a car heading in the same direction as us had a close call.

Man, I'm trying to climb Mt. Si this summer, I'm pretty out of shape and haven't hiked in years so I'm hoping it'll happen.

If I go to this meet, it'll be to the Index one since I live around Everett. Never actually been to the Boeing tours though even though a couple of my friends' parents work there. I'll probably ride my bike, I'd be worried the old transmission in the Buick will take a shit at the most inopportune moment. Hopefully my 300ccs will be able to keep up.

Basically a half hour anywhere east of the I5 corridor gets you to places like that. North Bend is pretty beautiful, you can drive straight up to the base of that mountain and you're only a couple miles from heading back to town for a delicious stop at the Dairy Freeze.

The only thing comparable I've done is climbing Bald Mountain over in Idaho a few times when I was a kid/teenager. Similar trail length I think but Mt. Si is way steeper and there's no ski lift at the top to take you down.

Then again, I've never run a mile in my entire life so maybe I'll just die.

I had metals with Adams once and regretted it, Meyers said he wanted me in his classes from then on. Metals was what I did most of, though I did turn a few wrenches in the autoshop when Adams wasn't looking.

Besides the usual sheet metal work and welding, a few of us got to making things for the school itself. We even got an opportunity to use the smelter and the TIG machine

Tell me, did you ever have Mr. Bopp? Loved that old man, he was great. I'm just trying to think of who else we might have had classes with the same teachers.

>Pretty sure Rainier would be too cold at night for mosquitoes.
There's lots of them in Alaska and they breed to be very large too. They somehow survive across through the frozen winters. But over here in the city, there's so much concern over nile (and other) virus spreading that in the past 10 years, there has been both aggressive spraying and ridding of stagnant pools of water everywhere in king county. With fears of zika virus associated with statistically high chances for pregnant women to have autistic babies, even a lot of catch basins in my city have been drained.

There are still mosquitoes inside the city limits, but it is a many times fewer than 10 or 15 years ago. I remember from long ago when they would immediately swarm me, but now, I have to wait outdoors quite awhile before just one lands on me.

>>17247077
>range was maybe 400 feet when it claimed 26 miles
Those are the citizen's band radios in the 28Mhz range rated in 26 "made in china" miles range. Lots of usa and japanese brands simply rebadge and resell the chinese items now. It's a matter of cash flow rather than preserving their brand name reputation as most people buy on price instead of reputation.

What people do now for communcations is illegally use high-powered licensed gear without a license. Amateur radio 144Mhz (2 meter band) gear is popular now and the chinese sell that gear on amazon, ebay, and other online places such as GearBest.Com If you're looking for chinese products, some places like gearbest.com serve as "minimum quality and performance" filters so you aren't buying blind a product that fails a week after you receive it.

Amateur radio (ham) operators are angry about unlicensed use of their bandwidth, but they are unable to stop the chinese from selling the gear to illegal users.

As for range, even WiFi reaches to Tacoma from Seattle as proven by seattlewireless.net when both ends have altitude and gain antennas to escape the nap of earth.

>Repellent
Probably not. Mosquitos mostly come out at night. They do this because they track humans by following co2 in the air. If they did this during the day, humans are moving around all day so the co2 doesn't leas anywhere because you're always on the move. At night, people usually stay in one place, which allows mosquitos to track and find them by co2. Over the years they just devoloped to hunt at night because of this

>>
>>17250439 how do they track humans vs other animals?
>>
>>17251052
Option 1: Different types of mosquitos are attracted to different chemicals. Really, all mosquitos are attracted to the same ones but some are just more attracted to chemical a, while some are more attracted to chemical b. This can be stuff like co2, pheromones, ECT just anything an animal emits. Mosquitos that are attracted to chemicals humans emit a lot of, end up finding humans or an animal that produces the same chemical. Mosquitos aren't specifically searching for a certain animal, they just go toward the chemical the are attracted to and it could be a man or a deer or whatever.
Option b(I think this is more for flies and ticks but some mosquitos do this too) they still follow chemical trails, but instead of looking for certain chemicals, they look for amounts of chemicals to find the right type of animal. Example, a large bug who would be too large to go unnoticed on a small animal is attracted to large amounts of co2(or whatever chemical) and they only follow trails with huge amounts of co2 which will lead to a large animal that's ideal for this bug. A small bug who wants a little animal isn't attracted to large amounts of co2. They will only follow trails with a small amount of co2 so that they find a small animal.
If you don't want to read all that, if a bug finds you it's because you either emit the chemical they like or the amount of chemicals they like

Not that guy, but I was thinking that it doesn't matter how fast the car is if I have fun and also get pushed a little bit out of my comfort zone in driving the car. I'm not an avid KIK user and so I choose to not use it because I still think of mobile computers as portable phones. Not your school, but I was in arizona for my high school years. The high school was full of people that wanted auto shop. Admissions priority was given to those who had "A" in Shop or Small Engines when in Middle School. I had straight A in both middle school courses. And I had taken ALL related courses not just one or two.

But the teachers would not let me take even one auto shop course EVER in high school despite even being nearly first in line. I was determined to be "college bound" and the auto shop courses were given with priority to minority and students from disadvantaged backgrounds as the UNofficial UNwritten policy. The public written policy for priority was the one I had qualified for, but the unwritten policy was the actual policy used.

That's the range measured from the top of a mountain to the bottom of the valley. Motorola found a taller mountain and deeper farther away valley because they now claim 28 miles range with their walky talky gear.

I've also read that having the antenna inside the car really fucks with the reception on the bands used for two-way radios, which is why cop cars all have external antennas.

Having metallic tinted glass windows also reduces the chance of weak signals working but doesn't seem to affect strong signals at all. I got ceramic type tints for mine because of that.

Maybe one of these days, I will try to look up if Consumer Reports or one of the other consumer magazines has ever researched window tint products.

Thinking about picking up a radio for the meetup, since not a lot of people seem to have one. Do those that do have them go for FRS or CB?
>>
>>17262478
>Thinking about picking up a radio for the meetup
Go to a few meets before you decide to pick up a radio. You'll see if you need one or not. As long as people remember a few things, driving as a pack doesn't need all that much voice communication.

In past meets, cars used the Watch The Buddy Behind You method. If the car behind you falls too far behind, you slow down some so they are able to still see you. And if cars in front use a turn signal, you also use a turn signal so that the pack following you sees the turn signal. That is how a turn signal is passed down the line.

The cars in front set the pace. The 1st car has the hardest task of keeping an eye out for police cars. The 2nd car also helps regulate the pace by not going too fast, thus the 1st car won't go too far in front if there are no cops.

Then there is that common sense such as don't take ex lax or eat foods with similar effect right before a long drive or you might be forced to drop out of the pack for a bit. I suppose having a radio works then.

I've never seen someone at the back of the pack try to pass a turn signal UP the line. As in someone in back turns on the signal. Then others in front of that guy start to turn on their signal too. Pretty soon the leader in front sees all the cars in back with turn signals on so he looks for a spot to pull over where all of us will fit more or less.

Well, show up and we'll all hash out an agreement on what to do for navigation as a pack. That's part of the fun.
>>

That's a nice pic desu.
>>
>>17263436
>>
>>17262478
>since not a lot of people seem to have one
Then there only needs to be a radio at the front like with car #2 and the last car. So if a problem happens, the last car will see it and tell the #2 to slow down which will cause the lead car to slow down when he looks back and sees #2 falling off with a turn signal.

Uh oh guys.

Was on my way home on the back roads enjoying a spirited drive in the miat. But when I shifted to fifth, it felt like it didn't grab the gear for some reason. When I accelerated it felt like I had nothing, if that makes sense. A couple minutes later at a light I notice smoke not only coming from the exhaust, though I suspect that's just the oil burning, but also from the empty gauge space below the radio in the center stack. Fucking smoke. I babied it home and now I have no idea what to do. I don't think I'd feel confident driving it again. There just seems to be so many major problems coming up on it and I'm just not in any position to tackle them. I might have to sell it and eat the loss and take a life lesson. Fuck everything.

Thanks for the heads up about West Seattle across the bay from Seattle downtown.

Some other major meet places are described along with their locations and times in the other WA Meet threads. One of them is the weekly exotic and supercars meet on the eastside where various owners park and show off their cars to the public. There seems to be meets all over the greater seattle region from tacoma to alki to the eastside.

Looks like the original route for June 10th was a big bust.

I rode out with another br/o/ to the proposed route and it is blocked off by jersey barriers 6 miles in.

We tried routing a different direction but no dice

This is the new proposed route (approved by the kik group for the meet)

Pretty much the same as before:

June 10th
Get there at 11am
Leave at 1130am
Drive the the end of the route and turn around and drive it back down.

There is no gravel in this route at all and all the roads should be open. As of right now it is bring your own food, but if you really want to bring your camp grill or something let the rest of us know so we can pitch some ''''''''''prepackaged'''''''''' food in

I don't use KIK, so I am verifying that the starting point is not in Index. The starting point is changed. It is now the Albertsons parking lot in Monroe at the address of:
19881 US-2, Monroe, WA 98272

The Albertsons at that location is permanently closed since Safeway already has a store next to Albertsons.

The lead pace car is ripping along around a turn after a tunnel. Black ice at the one spot. The leader falls over the cliff. #2 car does the same. #3 car does the same. etcetera. #9 car does the same. Finally #10 is WAT guy who pre-drove the route Tuesday May 30 so he knew what to expect and didn't drive like lemmings following the leader off the cliff.

King County has free leak inspection if you're in the King County area.... Sponsored by the king county department of ecology. I guess they got sick of leaking cars creating rain runoff that poisons ground water and river water. Besides checking your car for leaks, they also have a class to teach inexperienced car owners how to check for leaks.
