I've always wanted a Mitsubishi eclipse. Is it a lame car? I have an opportunity right now to get a 2012 eclipse for basically nothing and it's in good condition with 60,000 miles on. I know it isn't fast or particularly sporty, but it's always caught my eye.

Do you have the time/money to fix the multiple problems it will have (dead battery, degraded rubber, possible animal nesting, etc.etc.)? If the answer is no, then don't do it.
>>
>>17222714
That's the plan. I don't want to rice it. I just want something other than my '96 F250 which is my current dd and I'm sick of paying for gas. It's something I can buy and pay off within a few months, basically just as a boost to my credit.

Alright guys this is my car. A 2008 PT Cruiser, kind of like what >>17225873 said, but with a way more boring car /old person type car. How do I make people not cringe at it?

Where I work everyone's happy I'm not in my beat-up old eclipse that was in a wreck hence why I now am driving this.
>>
>>17227014
did you use photoshops "content aware" feature and did it put a tree in place of your face? Also, only normies see a PT Cruiser as a normal car despite all of us holding hatred and contempt for that car. Drive what makes you happy, if you prefer the beat up eclipse over the PT, use that. If you care about how you appear at work, take the PT cruiser.
>>
>>17227055
I just used brush healing spot so I didn't really care, but the Eclipse is destroyed because of a drunk driver. While not shown in that picture I'm always concerned how people will perceive me so PT is definitely an upgrade in every aspect. I just know that like myself, my car ain't gonna be pullin' any pussy so I'll deal with hat for a couple of years

Also anyone know the lifespan on PTs? Curious

Can someone please teach me to properly wash, compound, and wax a car? I need to make my family's 80s panther look clean (was in garage storage, no tarp), and they want me to do it.

I know about the 2-bucket method for washing, so I'm not completely lost there, but I'm afraid for the other two steps as I've never done it before.

I have Meguiars car wash soap, a sponge & glove mitt, several microfiber towels, Meguiars Rubbing Compound and Carnuba Car Wax. In addition I have a small buffer (no speed settings, just hit it & go) with a rough pad (think like a bath towel) and a smooth pad.

Before I even touch his panther, I want to practice on a shit heap he keeps (early 2000s chevy), so if I fuck up it'll atleast be on the shit car. BTW, I was told the panther has a single stage paint; does that mean it is more likely these chemicals & tools will burn the old paint?

Thank you

AC shit the bed today. It was working fine yesterday but went to turn it on today and the compressor wont kick on.

I had it charged last summer and its been working perfectly until today so Im thinking its electrical.

Swapped some relays and they seem to check out. Im thinking it might be the accumulator switch.

I dont know shit about electrical and Im wondering how to test the switch with jump wires? Do I just run a wire from the battery to the switch/connector? If so, Where on the connector?

Pic unrelated
>>
>>17223562
What on Earth do you drive that your mirrors don't fold on?
>>
>>17227713
where the plug plugs into the a/c compressor, just run 2 jumper wires from the battery to the compressor and if you have enough freon, it should kick right on. If it doesnt, either you're out of refrigerant and you need to find your year long pinhole leak OR like you say it's something electrical. follow the compressor wire back to whatever relay it's connected to and test the switch side while the a/c is on with your multimeter, if you're getting ~12v then the switch is fine and you just need to fix your a/c leak. It's totally possible that you just dropped below the minimum limit last night and that's why its not working.

>>
>>17228016
Typically, I'm just going off general ideas since i haven't even bothered to google your engine bay, the compressor will have 2 tabs. One will be black, the other could be any number of colors, usually red.

Side note, to test your refrigerant, take the cap off the high or low pressure side, whichever is easier to get to, and press the pin in for a split second, if gas comes out at a pretty high rate like a fresh can of shaving cream vs a near dead can, you're good, test the compressor. When you attach the wires from the battery to the plug on the compressor, you should hear a click as the electromagnetic clutch engages and disengages as you apply/remove electricity. If you have refrigerant and the clutch works, time to start looking at the rest of your pieces. But odds are its either no refrigerant or the clutch doesnt work.

Do compressor clutches typically fail on a whims notice?

Other cars Ive owned the compressor always gave signs of going out before shitting completley. Ie grinding and bearing noise
>>
>>17228079
I mean if the laminate material on the coils for the clutch just gets old brittle and breaks off so the clutch shorts itself out yes, they can die on a whims notice. The starter relay for my 92 explorer just shit the bed one morning despite starting the car fine the day before. compressors and leaks are really the only two issues with a/c systems.

My '02 Accent has done me pretty well as long as I've had it, and my dad had it before me ever since it was new. We're both pretty rough drivers, and it's crapped out a couple times, but it always seems to bounce back. I've heard bad things about Hyundai before, but personally I've never had a reason to complain about mine.

I need to start looking for a decent car that can go to gainesville to miami FL (basically 200~300 miles max) occasionally. Meaning I want a car that is on the easier side of fixing, but a safe car as well. I personally would like a crown vic or a F150 truck(insurance rates) and like to minimize my rates. However I'll look for estimates in my own time for insurance. What I'm asking of you, the anon, the following.

I have about two years to save up a car. I'm guessing I can get $2500 max for a car within that time.

>safer side of cars
>decent to very good mpg
>common problems may be fixable by owner
>at least 2000
>can maintain highway distances for atleast 4 times a year ( 800-1200 miles/year) not including daily a to b (which shouldn't be much)
>auto

Thanks and I appreciate it. Planning and researching is difficult on a subject I dont know very well.

No preferance on sedan, minivan, truck. Just a car to let me get to where I need it to

>>17236272
yes, don't do that, the forceful shifting with high RPMs between gears puts increased heat as the clutches slip. If you had a nice aftermarket trans cooler, i'd say carry on, but if you dont, just leave it in D.

unless it's right there and is a typical wear item, I wouldnt bother. unless it's all fucked up in which case you need to replace it anyways.

Thats 25k miles a year. If the car was properly broken in and maintained, I don't see a problem with that, 7k is pretty cheap. If it's clean and you have a mechanic friend sign off on it, I see no reason to not buy. Cars last a long time these days and I would say 60k is the full comfy break in

Take the wipers off and check the splines. If those look fine, you might be hearing the clicking of the relay for the motors. You could try to replace the relay, but no promises a new one would be any quieter.

I changed my spark plugs today and two of them (closest to driver's side) were completely soaked in oil. It's a 2.0 Duratec engine. I checked the oil cap for blow-by, there was air pressure coming out but no "puffing" that would indicate one or two pistons having worse rings than the others. It seems to run fine but it takes a bit of cranking to start up. Coolant is fine. Oil level doesn't appear to be dropping drastically over time. Exhaust is invisible, not blue or white.

What's the armchair mechanic diagnosis, minor head gasket break between an oil channel and those two cylinders?

is it possible for a car to have scratches on the base coat or primer but non on the clear coat? i have scratches/swirl marks on my car. i tried polishing out with orange pad and M105 (no luck) again with M105 and microfiber pad (no luck) and for last wet sanding with 3000 grit and then 5000grit sand paper and STIILL NO LUCK! the scratches can not been seen directly but only at a low light setting at a angle. i gave up before i damage the paint or something.

i even tried to polish them away with M205 but no luck

i watched various youtube videos on removing swirls from paint and proper technique for polishing. they make it look so easy.

i'm starting to think maybe who ever painted the car put the clear coat over the existing scratches on the base coat or primer

Maybe the PO polished/buffed through the clear and then reapplied it without fixing the base coat first.

That has nothing to do with your compression ratio. That is determined by your combustion chamber, piston and stroke. A loss of compression could be from bad rings, bad head gasket, and bad valves.

I fucked up, /o/.
I went to Carmax, after trying multiple other dealers and getting turned down, and bought a 2009 Toyota Corolla with a manual transmission.
I have never driven a stick before, but in my head, I kept telling myself, "no big deal, I'll just figure it out and get home" (about 30 miles up the road).
Instead of hanging out in the parking lot and getting a feel for it, I pulled right on to a road and just stalled and stalled and stalled as I tried to figure out for the life of me how to shift from neutral to 1st without stalling. I eventually (somewhat) got the hang of it, until I met the bane of every new stick driver: a stoplight.
The light turns green, I try to get into 1st and I stall, as expected. IMMEDIATELY get rear-ended by the dude behind me (no damage to me or the car) but it shook me up enough to realize the critical importance of knowing how to drive a fucking car before you buy it.
I went to my brother's house and we practiced on his street (no cars, kinda back in the woods) for about an hour.
Sorry for the blog post. Basically, my question is, how do I not fucking die when trying to go from neutral to 1st?
If it's really of any interest, I can explain why I bought the car I did, but I could really just use some help.
>inb4 >americans
>inb4 "you should learn to drive a stick before buying one"

>>
>>17240033
Really it's about balance. That clutch pedal is just as important as the gas when you're getting off the blocks, which is kinda hard to get used to after only driving automatic. Put the gas on a little, then ease the clutch until it catches, then put more gas to it as you continue to let the clutch out. The most important thing to not stall in 1st gear, is don't let the gas off with the clutch engaged, which is an easy reflex when the car jerks, but if you have to stop the car from jerking, then disengage the clutch first.

>>
>>17240103
Thanks anon.
I think 90% of my stalls so far have been from letting off the gas in reaction to the car jerking.
I found the sweet spot for some 5-minute intervals and then I'd lose it again. My brother told me "clutch is king." If I have enough time, I don't have to hit the gas at all; I can just let off the clutch and the car will go into 1st, but it's really slow and doesn't help if you're rolling backwards and the light has been green for several seconds already.
I'll just have to get out there and practice tomorrow, because I have to be at work on Monday.
Thanks again man

Anyone here a pizza driver? Kind of /o/ related. Want to know what the money is like, and how many miles I could expect to be putting on my car a day on average.
>>
>>17241352
I've done pizza delivery on and off for a few years, at several different locations.
The hourly pay is obviously garbage (it's going to be minimum wage), and when you're out on a delivery, it's going to drop to $3 to $4/hr, assuming you live in the US.
The tips, obviously, are the variable in this situation. I've worked in three different locations and have received three vastly different average tips. Things to keep in mind are: the size of the delivery area, the density of the delivery area, and the people who live in the delivery area. Hate to say it, but if there are a lot of blacks in the delivery area, you are going to frequently get very small tips, or no tips at all. Expect the customers to not have any idea how much their pizza costs, to not have their money ready, and sometimes, they will short you. If possible, drive an extra 20 minutes or so to a better area with a better pizza place so you don't get stiffed AND risk being robbed all the time.
Other than that, there's a reason I've used it for extra income for so many years. You can pick up anywhere from 50-100 dollars on a three hour Friday night shift. It's all up to what you want. Thank you for reading this novel.

Forgot about your second question.
Again, it depends on the scope and density of the delivery area. You can expect to put about 40 miles on your car in a night for a three-hour shift, and about 100 miles on an eight-hour shift.
>>
>>17241716
>3 or 4 an hour
Huh? I swear I've heard the places here will pay 12-14 an hour. I'll have to double check.
Any extra 100 or so is about what I need if I can only do it for a night. I doubt they only want you doing it for one day though. Though worried how much more it will put on my car. Wouldn't be worth it too much if I have to keep doing extra maintenance to keep it in shape.

Thanks for the info, anon.

What causes a braking system to react slowly?

I have a regular dual master + vacuum booster setup and the pedal has a lot of travel but also a good amount of resistance at the same time. It makes brake modulation a problem. Is there a way to improve this without throwing all the stock shit away?
>>
>>17242081
Why not older? The v8s of that era are detuned to shit because of emission standards of the time.
>>
>>17242280
I'll be honest, I didn't know they went much older with much more power. Teach me brah.

Can I get that carbed v8 sound from a modern ls engine? Is that a thing?
>>
>>17222734
becuase they based the off the galant platform, making them fat as hell.
>>
Unusual amount of deflation in the front right tire? I've been noticing this for about 2 months now. All of the other tires lose air about the same, but the front right tire loses air a lot faster. Anything I should look for that may cause this?
>>
>>17242280
If he goes much older it actually get more expensive.

>>17242309
V8's in the late 60's were putting out 250-300HP, after the oil crisis they were barely putting out over 100.

That being said those malaise engines only typically need a cam and head swap to wake them up, and some of them came in huge as fuck sizes like 7.3

>>17242259
Sounds like you master cylinder has taken a shit. At the very least you can have your brake fluid, brake fluid accmulates water over time affecting performance and rusting the lines.

But in all seriousness if you're going through all that trouble, and since bleeding brakes is a fucking bitch to do, just get your master replaced at the same time.
>>
>>17242330
Warped or cracked wheel.
>>
>>17242309
Yeah, the sweet spot for v8 cars is like 62 thru 71 imo. Like that guy said the cars get more expensive in that era, but that's because you don't have to replace as much of the engine to make them perform.

You can kind of match the carb's intake sound if you take your airbox off and get an aftermarket intake pipe. The exhaust sound can be matched with a modern v8, just choose the right crossover pipe style, mufflers, and camshaft.
>>
>>17242343
The master doesn't leak and it holds pressure. The brakes technically work fine, they just feel like shit. It feels like there's a restriction in the brake lines and it takes time for pressure from the master to build up at the calipers.
>>
>>17242343
>>17242367
Are there sites that'll sell just that era v8, like in a crate? I could probably squeeze it into a roller

I have a buddy who put an 80s v8 in his 69 mustang (barnyard build, they made it with whatever they had) and it tops put at like 60mph... I pretty much just don't want that
>>
>>17242388
Summit, jegs, lots of make specific sites, they almost all sell crate engines.

What made the 70s smog era engines so weak was very low compression ratios, very small camshafts, and EGR valves. And almost every crate engine you can find isn't going to have those things and will perform pretty well.
>>
>>17242413
Looking at summit now, so the engines aren't new, but refurbished?
>>
>>17242382
You don't seem to understand that master cylinders pit inside the cylinder due to corrosion (remember brake fluid is hydroscopic and collects water) and over time it takes more travel for the cylinder to produce enough pressure to engage the brakes.
>>
>>17242429
GM,Ford racing, and Mopar have performance depts that will sell you a newly made block
>>
>>17242388
>>17242388
>and it tops put at like 60mph

That's more of a gearing issue, but its possible your buddy did a straight transfer and didn't crack open the block to do a rebuild and cam replacement.

Most 80's 302's didn't put out much more than 220hp, and need at least a cam and GT heads to do much more than that.

not a car, but an engine question so figure its close enough

basically i have a lawnmower engine, when i got it it struggled to start and ran like shit. found out it was due to shitty exhaust valve leaking compression. ground the valve back with a stick and it started and ran good for a couple of times (few seconds each, both from cold, I cut it off). then I added oil and left it for a while (couple of hours). when I tried to start it again it wouldnt start, and I could feel the compresion blowing out of the exhaust again (held finger over port while turning it over). Is it worth pulling the engine out and grinding the valve back again, or should I just ditch it and get a new engine? Ive changed it a bit but nothing I couldnt redo in an hour or so.

Bought a truck with 160k miles on it. Changed the battery out (had trouble starting before, the battery was from '06), changed the oil and filter, changed the transmission fluid (automatic). Next I was going to hit the suspension. I am not mechanically inclined but I'm not stupid and I like to learn. I'm going to replace the shocks and their bushings and boots - what else should I look at while I'm down their?
I'm not replacing them just to replace them of course. Vehicle bounces like a motherfucker and doesn't quite sit level.

The spring's have more to do with how level the car is.

You might want to look into getting newer springs or put an extra set of leaves in the back, and look at the coil springs rests/isolator/Spacer in the front.
>>
>>17242892
Unless you are pushing the car to its limits you wouldn't be able to tell if its FWD or RWD.

It probably has more to do with the suspension set up.

This is really just an idea at this point, but if I were to drop a new engine into a boxy old station wagon, what would be the best balance of cost vs fun vs mileage? I hear a lot about *le LS swap*, but don't know anything about those really. I like the idea of a turbo diesel, but I live in California so idk what kind of regulations they've got on diesel swaps. It's also my understanding that Diesel engines can be more expensive. I'm not terrible at fabrication, so that's not a big issue as long as it's not aesthetic work.

The high-performance version of whatever engine it came with, maybe slap a turbo on there too. Swapping an engine that wasn't meant for the car is more work than you're probably equipped to do. Go for something that will bolt in.

Looking at a 2007 saab 9-3 with the 2.8L v6 and 6 speed manual. The car itself is in decent shape and mechanically well sorted, but does need new tires and has some minor paint scuffs/chips. It's sitting at 144k miles and they're asking $5k usd for it.

I have a 1987 mr2 that's developed some terrible vibrating wubwub noises when turning right at moderate speeds (seems to start at an excess of 20mph or so) after a track day this month. I've checked everything that could be a cause and ruled out:

tires and wheels
front wheel bearings (been replaced)
front tie rods inner and outer (no leaking from the boots, no rips or tears, no looseness at all, they're practically brand new by feel)
front ball joints (been replaced)
rear cv joints in and outer (no clicking/clunking, boots are all in great condition and theres no leaking anywhere)
rear tie rod ends (no tears, etc)

Now when I replaced the wheel bearings up front, when I took my rotors off I didn't mark their orientation in relation to the hub like my repair manual said too, but a key point is this vibration wasnt happening before the track day, it only developed near the end of the track day. Something I haven't yet done is take a stethoscope to the bearings of the wheels and really listen for any grinding which seems to be my last resort. Is there anything I missed to check, or something else that could be causing it? This shit is driving me crazy I need help diagnosing it

Newfag to automatics here, was doing some heavy hooning the other day with my automatic car and now the transmission slips when driving under 60kmh and slamming down the gas.
I was wondering if I've ruined my clutches or could it be that I've just boiled my ATF and it's fucked now.
On that note, getting the tranny fluids replaced costs about the same if not more than just replacing the whole transmission so I'm not all that bothered if I've ruined it completely and have to drop the transmission.

reliability, how they are to drive, would this be a reasonable car to daily, etc..
>>
>>17245570
For the most part, yes. For one you'll never get it fully insured and might, might, have trouble finding a company that will want to insure you for that.

The other reason is you may not know exactly why it got it and if it was really properly prepared. If there's any frame or uni body damage I wouldn't even risk it. Yet insurance companies will throw on a "savaged" title for a vehicle if any repair is worth more than the car currently is. If the car was old enough, or never held value to begin with, it could have gotten into a fender bender where even repairing the bumper is still too much.

Look at the lemon lot on base. Trawl craigslist and don't be afraid to drive a while to get something good. Ask your NCOs where the good dealerships are around base. You sound new, what's your grade? If you're e-4+ and you've got your life sorted and are looking for a new car, go ahead and get something fun. If you're fresh out of ait, get something reliable before something fun. A manual econobox would teach you better than something flashy.

Can't help you too much, I was only ever at polk for jrtc.

>>17245570
The biggest deal is with insurance. You'll never find anyone who'll give you crash/comprehensive. Hell, just getting liability for a decent rate will be difficult. That said, older cars are easy to total due to low value and you might be able to find a deal where a car got some expensive cosmetic damage and nothing else. Talk with your insurance rep before you do anything.

>>17244807
Engine swaps are much more involved than people make them out to be. Unless you have good fab skills, the most you can do is swapping between engines that were put in different trims of your vehicle and turbo/supercharging it. Also, remember that an engine swap can also require a new transmission as well.

You can only get liability or whatever for insurance.

I was really hoping you guys would have one of these threads.

Looking at a car, but the dipstick comes up pretty black. No idea when the last oil change was, but the car starts and runs fine.

My current plan was to just do a couple cheap oil changes every month or so until it starts coming out clean, then go to regular changes from there. I know there are engine flush treatments, but is that just a gimmick? Is there a best way to flush out an engine that's been mistreated?

The last thing you want to do is use cheap oil if it's dirty. You'll want to make sure you get some quality detergents so more build up doesn't happen.

Engine flushes do work, but car manufactures don't like it because they are worried the chemicals will mess with gaskets. You shouldn't need to use them if you do regular changes.

Might look into using Seafoam too. Cleans carbon up well. I hear Marvel Mystery Oil has a chemical that is often used in engine flushes so might look into that as well.
If you use either you'll want to change your oil a bit sooner than usual if you don't do it at 3k.

Yes, like I said I already ruled them out because it happens independent of the set of wheels and tires I put on them. And that it only started after a track day, which was with tire/wheel combo B, but still happens with tire/wheel combo A which means it can't be wheels and tires.

DONT BUY A GRAND AM.

I owned two of them, a 2000 4cyl and then a 2002 v6 gt with all the options on it. The interiors are basically straight plastic and everything in the car will break on you if it isn't already broken. This specific car is known for having head gasket problems, steering rack issues at low miles. The V6 does have a little bit of speed and the car handles decently but more than likely it's more trouble than it's worth.

tl;dr yeah, it has problems.

Nothing to do with cars but I'm in a pickle boys

You could do all of that with $20 worth of sandpaper and Bondo.

How much would it cost?

My friend and I had an accident in my car involving some very strong chemicals. Aside from salvage yards, where can I look to get a new dashboard? Google only wants to give me dash-kits, which will not fix the warping and holes melted into my current dash so that's a no-go.

You can order all the OEM parts from a dealership if your're made of money.

Do performance chips actually work on automatic econoboxes? 50+ hp to my autobox would probably hold me over for the next few months.

what's the name of the thing mechanics put on the front quarter panels to lean over while they work under the hood?

Not realy, a different ECU or a remapping works, but not like 50hp in a econobox.

Are bigger section front tyres gonna add any significant wear and tear to the front suspension . Would it be advised to change bushing for newer or stiffer ones if one is to put on fatter tyres up front . To be honest , just asking out of curiosity , my shitbox has 215s up front and it's more than enough when you slap in some nice , fresh rubbers

You should sheck out saab 9-3 Aero sideskirts allso the Aero front lip. I live in Norway and i allso have Saab 9-3 2.0T with 230hp. Might be easier to get parts right next to sweden ;)

Salvage yard and eBay if you're lucky. This is why I bought an XJ. ANYTHING that breaks is either on schmeebay or in one of twelve vehicles at the JY for less than a twenty.
