K&N style filters let past much more fine particulate than typical paper HEPA filters, those block almost every particle.
not to mention the fact that the stock intake almost always sucks from inside the fender or front bumper, which means much cooler intake temps.
For an infrequently driven car like a weekend car it doesn't matter that much but for a daily driver an oiled cotton style filter will suck much more dirt than a HEPA style filter, definitely not a good idea for offroad use either.
