Apparently it was for function, in that the 5 spokes were for strength and the 4 spokes were for lightness, and you put them on the axle most suited, but I've yet to weigh them and actually see if that's the case. Volk 5/4s, they're pretty rare, only came in 14" and 15". The inside barrel sticker that mine had (were still the original factory gloss black paint but battered to hell) said a production date in 1989, and I suspect they were all made in that year only, otherwise we'd probably see more about.

Yeah, I love them to bits, but as my set are 14"s, they only just clear the stock brakes with a 10% thicker disk. At some point I'll be getting a set of wheels in 15" but I'm not sure yet. Would like to get something a little unique/rare such as a set of SSR Pro Firenze, but they don't pop up often in 4x100 15x7 in the UK. A beautiful set of Weds SA-90 came up for sale a few months ago but I had recently been made redundant then and couldn't spare the money.
