Do the brake mod. It's 20 to 100 ((()))bucks but it's worth it. Depending on how much you suck, your times can improve form 2-4 seconds per lap. It's just annoying to try to use muscle memory to do the braking, it's unnatural and unintuitive. Glad they fixed it with the G29/920.

I just finished using the Ego Engine Camera Modding Tool and I fixed everything I fucking hate about the cameras. Now I'm flying through Open but I still can't manage to get no restart bonuses. Codemasters games have the shittiest cameras where they sway a ton and pivot from the hood instead of from the center like any other game. I modded out the camera sway and now it's rock solid like Ridge Racer. I raised the bumper too so my sense of perception isn't glued to the floor and my driving is a lot more precise. Fucking developers can never get cameras right.

I wish I could set the driver camera to rotate with steering like you can set it in LFS, but everything is still fairly visible.

On the other hand, DR gives absolutely no sense of how big the car is, swapping from a FWD hatchback to a Subaru ended in me slamming a few trees with the rear before I readjusted. Even Rally 2000 does this better: you can instantly feel from the handling that the Octavia is a much bigger car than a Saxo or Felicia.

GT3 had such an insulting FOV it looked like Halo or looking through a tube. The physics were slidey so coupled with that FOV that does a shit job at communicating your car's behavior made it more difficult to control than it should be. GT Concept was a half way point to GT4 where they improved a lot of things but the tank understeer model hadn't made it in yet believe it or not. It has no full career mode obviously so this one is for the arcade mode fans.

it feels good to have a little bit stiffer brake. I pushed a little bit of styrofoam-like thingie in bottom of my stock g27 spring and it really makes a difference. It's especially nice since pedal finally gets harder to press when lower.

When i switched from dfgt to g27, i also thought that g27 pedals are retardedly stiff. This impression faded away after a while.

Hey guys. I'm relatively new to racing games, and I got DiRT Rally during the recent sale. I've been loving it thus far, but I have a question -

When I subscribe to workshop tuning preferences, I can see them in the Steam Workshop - Tuning Presets section, however when I "apply" them, the actual sliders in pic related don't change from default at all (yellow ticks are default)

Am I doing something wrong? I tried making a new preset to maybe see if it would save there, but no such luck.

If it matters at all, I'm on Linux - I don't think it does though, since the workshop content that was downloaded is a simple tuning.xml file - and I've checked and they are present in the correct folder and they do contain different values, as you would expect. So I'm at a loss as to what might be causing this. Is this normal behavior?

Try and use your handbrake to negotiate those hairpins, but be light on the throttle or you'll slide right of the track. If you every feel like the car is getting out of control, release the gas and try to straighten up using the brake if necessary. If a turn looks intimidating, just slow down and take it conventionally. And most of all, never force the car into a slide. The car should always slide itself. You should enter with your wheels straight, and exit with your wheels straight.

I was trying to pull off the scandinavian flick for the hairpins but the maneuver is still pretty tough for me to pull of consistently, and since it's an uphill climb, even when I pull it off I tend to overestimate it so the exit speed doesn't seem like that much more versus a conventional turn

Something I don't quite get yet - when driving a FWD, I read that I should be sliding into the 3/2/1 corners, tapping the break and then throttling at the same time to negotiate those, but you're saying I should never force the car into a slide. So how do you turn properly when driving a FWD?

As a rule of thumb I've been just turning slightly with the throttle on for 6's, letting go of the throttle slightly for 5's, braking slightly for 4's, sliding and tapping break while throttling for 3/2/1, trying for the flick on squares and hairpins, and finally just taking it conventionally for acutes

In my experience, the Scandinavian Flick is bullshit. It's impossible to pull off and never works because the timing needs to be second to none. Always remember, regardless of whether your sliding or braking, you want to enter on the outside, find the apex, and power to the outside again. This is hard to do because rally stages are well marked, but it will help if you can master it. As with FWD cars, you should never really try to slide because it will just slow you down. Try and take every corner conventionally, and if the back and kicks a bit, let it. You should try and and get into the habit of handbraking through squares, hairpins and acutes, and occasionally 1's. These turns will really help you practice you handbraking skills, so trying to handbrake through them as much as often can help. Start by taking them conventionally and occasionally handbraking, then handbraking more and more often until you are comfortable doing it. If you ever encounter understeer and the car look like it wont make the turn, apply a bit of handbrake to get it to turn. Don't forget clutch kick. If you want to hold good slides and get though corners sideways, keep the revs high by kicking the clutch in a rhythmic fashion as you slide. As with GT racing and memorizing tracks, run a stage in custom event mode several times, starting slow, and adding speed as you become more familiar with it. Playing things in custom event mode can help you career, because you can play any stage with any car, and even race against your best time instead of AI. This can help you plan ahead when buying cars in addition to improving your times.

Is RaceRoom any good? It has mixed reviews overall, but I hear that it's a good alternative to iRacing because every purchase is perpetual. I also hear that 90% of the game is DLC, but you can test drive everything first, and you can get said DLC with in-game currency.
