Anons, why do they not make big, wide cars with bench seats and column shifters anymore? I just want sexy time with my girl; to take her up to a nice spot, to get it on while overlooking a beautiful view. Big American sedans used to great for fucking in, now every car is cramped, has bucket seats, and a floor shifter. It's like the old cronies in gov't said "fuck you, not for you!"

Fucking fuel pump went today. Hasn't even been a year since I put it in.
>>
>>17192432
I've replaced 3 fuel pumps on my Tbird in the 5 years I've owned it. Fucking spectra premium shit.
1st one got clogged up from rust in my tank, 2nd shit out after a year and the 3rd one decided to start leaking oil like a siv.
>>
>>17192462

I was thinking about buying a decent Holly pump and keeping it in the trunk with the tools to swap it out. The replacement I'm getting is free on warranty, so I'm going to drop it in obviously, but I want a better one on standby so I don't get stranded again.

Pic related, last year's breakdown. About 50 feet away from this year's. Weird ass fuel pump vortex.
>>
>>17191831
Nothing? Anything? Bueller?
>>
>>17192473
I bought one of those AutoZone pumps with the lifetime warranty and I keep it in my car as a spare because, for some reason, fuel pump failures are all too common these days.
>>
>>17192665
I should specify. I'll also keep some zip ties, a length of fuel hose, and some wired alligator clips so that way I can just bypass the existing pump with it if I need it in an emergency.

How do you lot feel about electronic fuel pumps? I always figured mechanical ones are safer because they stop when the engine stops. Thoughts?
>>
>want a classic car
>live in a country with the second highest gasoline price in the world

>>
>>17196271
Anon, but not all classic cars have to be large-displacement, V8 gas guzzlers. A lot of the really cool euro or japanese classics have engines with up to 1.4 litre displacement and good gas mileage all while being reasonably fast and just as exciting and fun to own as any other classic car.

mechanicals have a diaphragm that can rupture and leave you stranded or leak fuel into the crank causing a lot of other issues.
electronic ones generally are pretty trouble free and provide constant pressure and volume and dont need you to prime the carb after working on it to fire up

>>
>>17196259
Get an oil pressure switch, so the pump doesn't run without the engine running.

>>17196638
Just the pressure switch is fine if you run the engine at least every week, but you might want to add a delay relay to bypass it when you first turn the key on.

Have any of you dudes used ClifFordPerformance before?
I'm wanting to buy some new aftermarket parts for a 1972, 4.1 Falcon 6 engine but they seem to be the only option.

Pic related, as it seems to be the theme of the thread.
>>
>>17198255
I thought about it for the 300 but the cost too benefit ratio isn't worth it compared to V8 swapping and just starting with a better platform
>>
>>17198661
I'm just wanting to put different parts on it so it'll collectively last longer. This is still the original engine for this car and if I were to do a V8 swap I'd also have to redo the front suspension and the entire rear end.

I'm not racing it or anything either, so it wouldn't be worth the whole swap. I'm just wanting SOME more power because it's my daily.
>>
>>17198757
Is the intake cracked or anything? Why change it if it works and you're not after performance.
>>
>>17198767
Everything on it works just fine. I'd be swapping my intake so I could put a 2 barrel on it, but besides that it's just so I can prevent being stranded if something ends up breaking. Like I said, these current parts are 45 years old, dude.
>>
>>17198799
No I feel you, I've got a 52 year old pickup with a straight six.

But preparing for failure doesn't need sense to me. An intake is a steel tube, a carburetor is a carburetor. There's not too fail between the two. If anything the carb would just need a cleaning, or you there a bunch of ice water on the engine and cracked the intake
>>
>>17198799
>>17198875
Like if anything, maintenance, a valve adjustment, maybe a new factory camshaft and new bearings but an intake and a 2 barrel won't necessarily make it more dependable

Post this here again since it didn't get much time in the last thread.

Come Monday I start my new job in PA. Working as a mechanic at a shop that specializes in classic European cars, though some American stuff does come in. Place is filled with Jags, MGs, and Austin Healeys at the moment, with Triumph, Morgan, and Alfa Romeo sprinkled in. But that'll all change as jobs get done and new ones come in.
>>
>>17199704
On one hand I'd love to work in a shop like this but at the same time I fear I wouldn't want to look at mine after 8 hours working on them.
>>
>>17199704
I didn't believe the meme, Akry, but I sure as hell have fallen for it.
Ever since I've had a job working on other peoples vehicles, I've had no desire to work on mine on days off
>>
>>17199746
>>17199738

I've been a mechanic now for over 8 years. If I'm working on stuff I love, as in that pic, I never get bored. But when its regular repair work on new cars I find it mundane and boring, then don't want to do things at home.

I have found that the key is finding out what you have a passion for, then doing that. I have a passion for classic British and other European cars, and now I have a job fixing them again, I'll be happy and making money.

That was the case for me for years but the drive came back, fortunately these days I mostly do more difficult diag/driveability stuff so I don't mind mindlessly parts swapping on my own cars (though I still drive any wear item into the ground). Fabrication and paint I still have lots of motivation to do since I don't get to do as much as I want of that at work.

I finally got around to cutting the sill off the tray sill, I'm sure there's a word for it I just didn't remember.
I knew it would be bad because the top had been bogged and as I uncovered the metal it turns out whoever was working on the car previously had tacked a plate in but never finished welding it.
So the second picture is what had rot off the original sill and fallen into the box section.

What's the first things I should do to clean it up cheaply? First real classic I'll have, I had a 87 944S but it came really clean so there wasn't much for me to do.

Update on the Trans am. I reached my goal, I daily drove it a year to get me though the college classes I was taking and I've now saved up for a newer more reliable DD. But I didn't kill her as bad as I thought after overheating the living hell out of it. I did an oil change and couldn't find any more metal bits in the oil ( I think the chrome on the dipstick was flaking off ) anyway, I'm thinking of a rebuild for the 403. I'd love to do it on my own but I honestly dunno where to start. Is there any reading material or advice you guys can give me for starting out with a project like this? Also I'm not looking to make it super fast (it's a 403 I know they're kinda junk) for use on a drag strip but I would like to hop it up with some extra performance to have some fun at stop lights and do stupid shit.

I got my carbs (Kadrons, or Solex 40/44EIS) for my Super beetle back this week, after having the throttle shafts rebushed, and getting them put through an ultrasonic cleaner. I had a fire on the passnger side carb last fall and sent them out to get cleaned up, since I couldn't get the passenger side to work right. Apparently a bunch of tar was blocking the progression ports.

While I was digging my manifolds and linkage back out, I decided to clean everything up and paint them, since the fire destroyed the paint on one of the aircleaners anyway. I figured I might as well do everything all at once so the color matches.

The steel itself is stained from the fire, but I was able to get it reasonably decent after a good scrub with a wire brush and steel wool. These aircleaners are 40+ years old, and covered in little nicks and dings, so I'm not too worried about perfect looks.

Manifolds were black wrinkle, so that's what they got sprayed with. Closest match to the original silver paint on the linkage and aircleaners was the VHT "cast aluminum" engine paint. It's almost exact to the paint that was on the parts.

Aircleaners don't look too bad, a little cheesy, but that's what you expect out of aftermarket performance parts from the 70's, especially for the VW scene. Fits the look of the cars pretty well. >>
>>17219467

Um, yeah, it does. My daily commute is 160 miles round trip, and it never takes more than 5.3 gallons to fill it, but that's 90% highway driving, around town it gets 22-25, but I never really use it for short trips anyway. I drive so much for my commute that once I get home the girlfriends car (Camry) is what we use.

The engine gets pretty good highway mileage due to proper jetting (I borrowed a wideband from a friend at work) and vacuum advance, in addition to the proper gearing of the later transaxle.

The 6.9 and the 7.3 IDI are the same engine. A 7.3 just has a larger bore, so it's a great engine, not going to win any races though.
The best tip would be not to accidentally put gasoline in it, pretty much.

That things looks fucking sweet though, aside from the hood ornament and stack

The 6.9 is a decent engine. I don't know of any issues other than the glow plug controller and the glowplugs themselves being a pain in the dick sometimes.

As for the rest of the truck, either chop out the fusible links and replace them with fuseholders, or keep a couple fuseholders, butt splices, and silicone grease in the truck at all times.
The links tend to get the green death in them and burn out when you're on the freeway dragging something home lol.

>>17221960
The 7.3 has cavitation issues if you don't keep the coolant in tip-top shape.

If you want people to stop hating you, it's real easy. Here are a few pointers:
1. If you're going to modify your vehicle in some way, do it because it's what you want to do and state that. Trying to defend ANYTHING pertaining to fuel economy here is like trying to argue in favor of the jews on /pol/
2. If you offer advice, do so in a humble manner and be sure to state what you have tried IRL vs what you know of in theory.
3. Don't spam pictures of your vehicles unless warranted.
4. Avoid vacuous doubletalk statements.

I'd be willing to bet that, if you tried these 4 things, you would stop being despised around here.

Man, I've been here for years. I know the deal. I'm not going to lie and think I'm hot shit, I don't know a lot of things.

I'm not going to modify my vehicle based on trends or other people, that's retarded. I'm modifying my vehicle because I've driven it for 3 and a half years and I know what I want out of it. Some of it is usability, some is power, some would just be making it cooler to myself in my head.

>>
>>17226524
I'm honestly looking at both. I'm just trying to gather together as many options as is possible and then whittle them down bit by bit.
>>
>>17227641
You need a big list on a piece of cardboard that you can refer to as you go along. Then you can decide how to specify. Are you building a stroker or what?
>>
>>17227648
Here's the situation: The engine I have in now is a stock 5.0 with failing main bearings. I've wanted to put new heads and some other goodies on here, but with the main bearings in mind, those plans are on hold. I'm figuring the engine has another year or two of life before it craps out. Maybe more, maybe less. I want to pull a JY block in good shape and slowly build it up over the remaining lifespan of the current engine so that when it does give up the ghost, I can just drop the new engine in. I'm aware I could simply rebuild the engine I've got now, roll in new bearings, and do a dozen other things, but this is the plan I settled on.

That being said, the new engine is aimed towards being reliable for the foreseeable future with a modest bump in power. I'm shooting for 300 hp and 350 ft lbs of torque with a new cam, new heads, a decent exhaust, and supporting modifications. Nothing insane, as it's a daily driver. But I want it to last, and I want it to be built in a way that'll allow more power down the road. I also want to keep the block itself as close to stock as possible, for my own stupid reasons. Most of the pistons I've found are for bored out blocks, and a lot of crank options are for strokers. So, I'm trying to compile a list of all of my possible options, and see what I have available to me.
>>
>>17227690
Dropped trip accidentally.

That's what I'm shooting for. I'm going to be buying a salvage explorers 5.0 from 97-01, that way I get the factory GT40 heads. That, with upgraded valve springs, shorty headers and an e cam should net me about 310-320 crank hp and a decent torque curve with the Edelbrock performer intake I have.

What is this going in and where are you located? What year is your vehicle?

You're actually pretty close to my plan. GT40P heads, Ford Racing shorty headers if I can find them, and probably a 35-255-55 cam. It's going into an '89 Bronco, my daily driver. Currently in Orlando, FL. Truck is from NY though, so it's got a good bit of cosmetic rust that needs to be repaired. At least the frame is solid. Attached screenshots from a virtual dyno program I found a while ago that show a couple of options that I was exploring.
>>
>>17227795
Sounds good man. I went with bbk 1515s because they're insanely cheap, work with the GT40p heads and can be found anywhere.

In the meantime, I have a E7 h.o. upper intake of you want it for the cost of shipping. Includes a throttle body, I just don't have a need to touch efi stuff.
>>
>>17227826
Shit, I may consider taking you up on that. I'm still planning on keeping the truck EFI and actually putting the 4-pintle injectors from the Explorer in. Send me an email: [email protected]

ebay looks like it has a lot of the stuff, and there's this volvo website that has a few, but I have the distinct feeling it's going to require a bit of fucking around with other cars parts to try and make it work.

>>
>>17242342
Eh, you'll be in it for 10 grand by the time its done. Piecing shittogether like that can be a challenge too.

I bought a 78 Bronco for 2500 and drove it home. I'm in it now for 8500 and I haven't touched the body yet, although it doesn't really need much body work.

>>
>>17242393

Yes but for a lot of cash.
The only reason classic American cars can get away with it is because the aftermarket produces brand new any single part that your car would need.

>>17242558
For reference, my Rolls Royce was $600.00 and, to get it to a state of semi-usability, it will cost roughly $20k. $40k if I want it perfect.

By contrast, I could buy a daily driver for $25k.

I'm doing it because I want to, not because it makes sense. In the end, I will have restored a '60s Rolls Royce for slightly more than I could have bought one for; but, I will have done it my way.
