Hey guys. I'm planning to take a cdl course in a few months. I have a cat, and I know some outfits will let you bring a cat. Only problem is I know that even when you have a cdl as a new driver they have you drive with a trainer for a bit. The course itself is located in longbeach and it's geared towards finding port drivers. If I was to drive in the ports for a bit could I bypass the trainer thing for otr? Or would some trainers be ok with you bringing your cat?

Today is the day b/o/ys.

We leave in a couple of minutes to go test out and bring back the new truck.

Its a five hour drive to the fabricator, so it'll be a nice drive back with it.

It's been my experience that KW's ride softer than the equivalent Pete and a lot of drivers prefer the firmer ride since it makes them feel more in control.

Everyone knows pete drivers like to get ridden hard.
>>
>>17185198
That's always fun, especially when it's going to somewhere you've never been before, and it just so happens to be located either downtown in a major city or a fucking suburban neighborhood.
>>
>>17185198
So leave their load where the directions give out, and leave a message on their answering machine explaining why.
In a pinch, return it to the nearest company depot as a refused delivery

If enough of you truckers started doing that, people would fucking learn. Want a delivery? Don't fuck about.
>>
>>17185456
Lol it was one of those downtown big city deliveries. Didn't go until I finally got verbal directions because it's small streets w cars parked up and down the shoulder and if you come the wrong way you're fucked. Once I finally got directions it was like

>Yea bruh you gotta turn right on X street. Unless there is a car on the corner then you won't make it. If that happens go through EXACTLY 3 stop signs and turn left on nigger avenue, go through two stop signs and turn left on degenerate drive, then turn left at the second light. Do NOT miss a turn.

I get the idea of how to shift a truck for the most part but how do you actually stop? Like if youre in the highest gear like on an 8ll its 8th gear in the high range so what do you do if you went up a hill and noticed a stop sign and had to stop, do you down shift into low range 4th gear and then put it in neutral? what about if you had to stop at a red light? do you have to downshift all the way or can you shift to like 5th gear and just keep the clutch pushed in a few inches and then take off again or should you be in neutral? and if you are in neutral at a redlight what gear do you start in again? doesnt holding the clutch on big trucks damaged them?

ive drove manual cars but trucks seem hard

>>17187622
bro it's the same as in a car, comes down to preference. some people downshift. some people throw it in neutral and coast.
>>
>>17187622
I have heard from a diesel tech that you can blow up the clutch if you mis-shift, like going down to a low gear on the highway, spins the clutch disc so fast it flies apart before it even connects with the pressure plate.
>>
well fellas I officially start tomorrow driving flatbed with a crane and rigging company tomorrow. first ever driving job. most of their trucks are W900 day cab gliders with 500hp C15s and 18 speeds. this is my first driving job and I learned truck in a 1995 FLD with a 360hp Detroit 12.7L with a 9 speed. shouldn't be that hard to get used to an extra step in shifting, right? and has anyone else worked for a crane company before? I honestly don't even really know what I'll be doing but it pays well and there are a lot of cool people there.
>>
>>17183794

Anybody want to buy my 2000 international 4700 reefer strait truck? How much is it worth with only 110,000 miles on it? I tried being a trucker fag for 8 months before going back to hiring out shipments, truck has been parking lot surfing for the last two years.
>>
>>17187622
Just let the auto do its job. Meh
>>
>>17187860
what does that mean? jake brakes?
>>
>>17187622
Eh. Don't bother with shifting down to the Low Range. Get down to the bottom of the High Range, declutch and coast in. You'll only be doing like 15mph by that point anyway. Once stopped, trigger the Low Range and shift to the gear you're going to start from. DO NOT throw it into Neutral or you'll have hell getting it into gear again if you have to start moving before being completely stopped. Also for training/school downshift every gear down to the stop until told otherwise by whoever is your supervisor.
>>
>>17187870
I think it means drive an automatic
>>
>>17188007
I was taught to shift to the lowest gear of the high box, coast from there and clutch in once the RPMs get below 1000, with exceptions being things like making a slow corner into a parking lot/yard or the light changing right before you come to a stop. in which case I'd just try to glide it into a gear in the low box with no throttle or clutch.
>>
>>17188047
Sounds like we're saying the same thing.

>>
>>17187622
Can't speak for everyone, but if I don't need to use the engine brake, I'll skip from 8H to 5L, then if the light changes go into the appropriate gear and accelerate. Otherwise stop in gear and shift to L/1/2. It's better to stop in gear to make sure everything's stopped spinning and you can quickly get into gear to start moving again if need be. Stopping in neutral leaves the gears spinning, so you need the use the clutch brake.
>>
>>17187542
I don't get how people complain about reefers. Mine's doing -10 on constant and even when it's defrosting, it's not as loud as any truck idling. APUs are what fucking suck.

>tfw company took my truck in for massive maintenance last Monday
>it had an apu
>they gave me a loaner that doesn't
I've kept this thing idling all night every night for cold air. If you don't sleep over engine sounds then fuck off.
>>
>>17188666
Even reefer guys complain about the noise my propane burner on the asphalt tanker makes. It is loud as fuck.
Yet the bull hualers love it, as they say the constant drone of it seems to calm the cattle and they arent kicking and moving about when they are trying to get some sleep.
>>
>>17184490
Pete 3's ride better than anything I've been in. I've driven all sorts of Franks, a couple Kennys, and a few Petes. The 379 I drove with 2.1mil on it rode better than the brand new Coronado glider with 24k on it.
>>
When coming to a redlight or stop sign how do you down shift through all 8 gears? ive read some people say to downshift to 5th and pop it to neutral and then just hold the brakes. but how would a road test expect you to do it? are ypu supposed to saty in gear even at a lobg redlight? wont holding the clutch all the way in damage it especially for that long?
>>

Picked up the new ride from the fabricator today and had a nice six hour drive back home to get acquainted with it.

Breddy decent, all in all.

DD16, 600 horsepower (extra powah for running the high pressure pump), seven speed Allison automatic transmission, heated leather seats, no governor or GPS tracking (Hit 81mph on the highway before backing down to a more reasonable speed), and the pump cab has a microwave and coffee maker for long jobs.

I think with the IL road test, they wanted us to go down to 6th gear in the 10spd. And pretty much as soon as you stop at a red light, you had to shift into 3rd and hold it there until the light turns green. It sucks, but it will be different when you aren't taking the test.

In the real world, if I'm coming up to a stoplight in 9th, maybe I will downshift one or two gears but normally I will just drop it into N and coast. Not like I'm worried about overheating the brakes. Then if the light turns green again while I'm still rolling, rev match and slip it back into whatever gear I can get into.

Hey guys, first time posting in this thread but I casually lurked here a few times.

Have a few questions:

How would I go about getting my CDL? What's the easiest and least expensive route?

I've heard about some programs that pay for your schooling and CDL if you hold a job with certain employers for a year or so, is that true?

Do I need to have my own truck to start out or will my employer loan me a truck?

Sorry for all the nooby questions but I'm genuinely interested in this career path. Thanks for the help.
>>
>>17191319
>Easiest and least expensive route
Company-paid CDL. Yes, most places have it where if you drive/slave for them for a year, they will pay off your CDL training. As for the truck, most companies have trucks waiting. Only time you'd need your own is if you go owner operator.

Baroque/classical/romantic actually. Especially in big cities or stressful driving situations. If I'm listening to normie music or talk radio I have to mute it when I get into traffic, it's too distracting. Orchestral music doesn't throw me off.

It was initially about 800k from what I have been told with the cab/chassis, equipment and labour, and the retrofit, which was just finished was just a tic over 100k.

The second go around extensively modified the original layout to make it a lot more user friendly and versatile for the types of pumping jobs it can do.

Yeah, I like it. Rides pretty high with the twin steer setup. Bucks like a mule with a bee sting on its ass when it goes over real rough pave with the long chassis.

Depends on my mood and the situation. A lot of classic rock, country and golden era of west coast hip-hop when I have a swamper with me. Automatic trucks are a thing now, but yeah it would be tough.
Maybe not as tough as learning how to drive manual on say, a Geo Metro. Also learning manual on a car will leave you with some bad habits that you'd have to unlearn when you get in a truck.

No. A crashbox is a non-constant-mesh transmission, with straight cut, sliding gears.

A 'regular transmission' is constant mesh, meaning the gears stay put and changing speeds is accomplished by moving dog clutches. Not necessarily synchromesh.

Gatehousefag for a warehouse here, not a frequent tfag general postet
We have a shit ton of empties on the lot, and we're having issues with space. Is there a good way to let drivers in the area know that we have empties for the taking?
>>
>>17203141
Not really. You'd have to know what their other drops are and post dated notices there if the other drops would let you. And even then most drivers would miss it because they fucking refuse to read anything at all.

So you'll just have to complain to their company who will promise to get the extras out asap because they really do need them and if you have extras that means somebody else is short. The subject may even come up in a meeting about how these extras need to get moved out soonest where the staff will pledge to do it. However what will really happen is you'll probably end up with a few more before they start slowly drifting out until you have too few. Then drivers will start showing up looking for trailers because they were told there were too many there.

I guess a short-term solution for you guys is that none of that companies drivers leave bobtail so you can at least limit the extras to about what you've got now. Some will still slip in because there's always somebody that doesn't get the word.
>>
>>17203267

>>
>>17203979
I heard that like half the companies out there are barely solvent
>>
>>17203987
That might be, the issue is with Celadon is over valuing their assets and playing hide and seek with the accounting via numerous shell companies.
https://seekingalpha.com/article/4060487-celadon-group-story-ends-chapter-11
>>
>>17204004
The TL;DR version of that link:

Celadon created a network of allegedly semi-independent companies and passed assets and money back and forth to hide losses. This seems to have started when they over-valued the fleet of old trucks Quality Leasing had available. Once the true value of the fleet became clear they were looking at huge losses that would have tanked their stock prices. So they hid the losses with various games and kept it up for at least a couple of years. Investigators for major investors have now figured out what was going on.
There's a conference call with investors tomorrow that could lead to their collapse. There's also federal regulators on-site. The whole thing could literally fold up tomorrow.
What J Canell hasn't figured out yet is that we could see truckers from other companies fucked too, tossed out of their Quality Leasing trucks at random truck stops. That could make this fiasco much bigger than the Arrow collapse.

That shit confuses me. So from reading the first little bit, it sounds like they basically set up shell companies so say they need to sell a bunch of old trucks off, they "sell" them to shell company for $50k each, then shell company sells them for $10k each. So shell company that (on paper) isn't related to Celadon takes a $40k loss on each truck but Celadon is somehow recouping $50k on old trucks that are really worth $10k and it makes their books look good?

Not necessarily exactly how they did it, but companies like Celadon are playing games with some shit like that?

How does anyone back into spots like this? I'm not an amazing backer, I've only been solo for about 8 months, and when I have to bump a dock or drop off a trailer, I can usually one shot it or get it with one pull up, no problem. But I missed the memo on how to set up for these when there's other trucks. I think I'm just too afraid of bumping into someone. But every single time, I get myself in a position where either the back of my trailer is at the spot but I'm at a retarded angle, or I get the trailer parallel to the spot but I'm a foot or so off to one side or the other. It never feels like I have enough room but I know there's enough room because everyone does it. I'm so afraid of these spots that I drive almost exclusively at night, so when I go to shut down at noon-ish, I know whatever lot will have lots of empty spots and I can find an easy one.

It's the same with any trailer. Just watch the trailer wheels. Pull up at an angle so the trailer wheels will be right in front of the truck to the left of the spot's bumper and then just roll it right around the corner of that truck into the spot.

But when do you turn away from the spot to make the angle?

Only real difference is with a 48' spread axle, since there's no tail swing, and the pivot point varies with load distribution.

Woman, obviously. My normal FM is based as hell but he's off for the week so I get to deal with this. What is it with women and being exact with time? We aren't landing airplanes here, 640 is the same as 630, even my computer registered it as an on time delivery. I used to have a female boss who would force employees to call if they were going to be even 30 seconds late for work. Would threaten to fire you if you didn't make a stupid call like "hey I'm supposed to be there at 800 but there was a wreck, I'll be there at approximately 8:03"

hello mateys. I come to you with a question. I just got my CDL not long ago, class a combination with air brakes. learned on an old FLD with a 9-speed and was always taught to double clutch, instructor refused to show us how to shift without the clutch because he said we're not allowed to do it on the test. so I'm now driving a 13-speed and got the hang of shifting without the clutch pretty quickly. but you guys still use the clutch to downshift, right? I overheard a coworker say something about never clutching down gears but I assume he was joking. just didn't want to make myself look like a total jackass and ask him.
>>
>>17221109
(Thee).

Who gon' bake next bread?
>>
>>17221173
>still use the clutch to downshift, right?
Nope. Once you get good, you can downshift without using it at all. It's all about timing, and being familiar with the transmission, and your target RPM for the gear you're gong to; just like upshifting. When you're still getting the hang of it, you may need to use the clutch to get out of gear. Sometimes you do fuck up though and miss the timing, the clutch saves you then.
