>open the headlight access up like you're changing the bulb
>pour in carrot juice to cover the bottom with 1/4 inch of juice (this is critical, too much and the blinkers will be too orange)
>next, fill up a spray bottle with acetone and spray half the bottle into each headlight (this cleans the lines so fluid can reach rear blinkers)

If it has the same physical dimensions, you wont need additional preparations.
Since you most likely want to put more stress on the engine you should upgrade the bearings and use a thicker oil.

Put it in neutral

You shouldn't be in gear at a light for more than like 30 seconds you'll wear out your clutch quicker. It's not going to kill you doing it every once in a while but if you're always at red lights with your clutch engaged you'll wear it out quicker than by sitting in neutral with the brake

Could bad battery terminals cause a parasitic draw and kill my battery?
Long story short I had both. It appeared it was a radio fuse but after replacing the battery terminal things and a new battery, I can't replicate the draw with a parasitic test. I'm wondering if it is the cd player and since I haven't use it yet, it's not doing it again.

I've got an Eastwood MIG 135 welder and I just tried to switch from flux core to solid steel w/ gas. When I was changing the wire, I loosened the tension on the feed roller and pulled the old wire out with pliers so there's none left in the feed tubes or gun. It came out pretty smoothly. Now the new wire won't go in. When I put it in the tube beyond the roller it'll only go in like an inch and then it feels like there's something in the way. Turning it on and trying to feed it does nothing, the roller just slips. I tried adjusting tension both ways and it doesn't change anything. The manual doesn't mention anything about this and all the google results are people with broken feed motors or blocked nozzles, which don't apply to me. Thoughts?

Pic related, 4 is the feed roller, 3 is the allen screw holding it on so you can switch wire sizes (I have it on the correct size). The cone on the right is where the wire comes from the roll, and the cone on the left is what feeds into the tube/gun. When I stick it into the cone on the left, it gets stuck shortly after.

yup, the coolant level will rise when the car warms up and goes back down as the engine cools down and siphons the coolant back into the system. If you're worried, you can always top them off to the max mark with no adverse effects.

>Could bad battery terminals cause a parasitic draw and kill my battery?
No. Parasitic draw us when amps leak out due to a short to ground or component staying on when it should be off.

Bad battery connections could appear to be parasitic draw as it would create resistance which may interfer with recharging and allowing enough amps to flow when trying to start the car.

My DD is a 2012 Mazda3 i GT. Only issue is that the GT trim doesn't come with a manual for the Skyactiv powerplant, and the slushbox is basically a turnpike gladiator. (4th is 1:1, 5th is a healthy OD, and 6th is almost 1:2), but it's still a decent engine. The 2.5L powerplant can have a 6MT, but it gets poorer mileage, being both a larger engine, and also not being a skyactiv engine until later years.

Other than that, the car handles really well for something weighing ~3000 lbs, and it's got plenty of power for overtaking in 90% of circumstances. I got mine for 5900 from a dealership, only needing a new set of tires + brake pads, and some fluids

Got myself a summer car to drive while looking for better daily. A 1984 Mitsubishi Lancer Glx with the 1,5liter engine and 104k kms. I'm trying to find a Haynes repair manual for it or something similar but I keep getting shitty results. Was this model called something else in US or is it just that no manuals exist for this. Well the car is very simple to wrench so I don't think its necessary to have manual, but just in case.

Scenario: slow power steering fluid leak somewhere

Solution (temporary): fill up after too much fluid has leaked

ISSUE: reservoir is full, up to fill line, but it still turns like there's no fluid. The oil change guy was able to put two bottles in and it worked like a charm for months. I put a single bottle in and barely felt a difference even though the reservoir is full

Sounds like he did something to get the fluid flowing that I'm missing. Any ideas? I've been driving it for a few days and nothing

Can axle shafts easily be shortened (for example, by cutting them) while retaining their function?

>>
>>17184127
I doubt there's anything in the haynes manual that you couldn't just apply basic mechaincs to. the only thing you might need to know is specific torque for bolts and maybe tolerances. torque you can apply from previous knowledge based on the part, tolerances like for the valves are listed on the hood somewhere if that paper still exists.
>>
>>17184501
I mean, if you're replacing the throw out bearing, you might as well replace the whole clutch and flywheel. Looks like it's you're standard fwd clutch replacement. ez job, just support the engine NOT ON THE OIL PAN, and remove the transmission then get to what you need to.

true, however if air was the problem wouldnt that make ether do little to nothing? and im pretty sure its tbi, i havent actually taken a look at it under the filter housing
>>
>>17184685
Eh, i mean, lack of air like a dirty idle air control valve or throttle plate would just make your car idle and run shitty. I bet if at least 6/8 of your injectors worked the car would start, just run shitty. Not starting sounds like a no spark or no fuel spray issue. take the plugs out and check for spark and see if gas sprays out the spark plugs hole when you turn it over.
>>
>>17184692
it used to idle and run just fine as soon as you ethered it over. also tbi not mpfi. but ill check spark and fuel tomorrow.

Tacoma. Better factory options, TRD six-speed goodness, and you don't have to hear chebby fanbois talk shit about why you didn't just get the Silverado. if you are amerifat then please be advised to do something else. Everybody here complains that it's shit pay for lots of work. And that you need to bring your own tools.

If you are european tho, a skilled mechanic makes medic-level money. Though it gets increasingly difficult because new cars have more and more parts that can be accesed only with special tools, which are found exclusively at dealerships. And they don't sell any.

Dealership mechanic is a bunch of shit.

My faggot-ass neighbors with the puppy mill (also the ones that keep our road blocked with all their non-running cars) called the fire Marshall about my project car under the carport and ended up getting some kinda ticket while she (the lady neighbor) was in the yard screaming at them. Made sure to wave to the neighbor as I was smiling walking back into he house. Time to move.

I wonder if you have a pinhole leak that somehow allows air to get in. If there's air in the system, it compresses instead of moving the fluid. Also PS fluid is too thick to allow the air to rise and escape. So the reservoir will stay full, but you'll have the issue where it feels like you have no PS at all. The guy probably bled the system and it took a few months to build enough air to stop working properly.

I have the same issue in my wrx, except the air bubbles get recirculated into the reservoir and pop. My leak isn't that big of a deal and only happens when it's below 55F.

Eh, that's an extra say 5-10$ every 4 tanks of gas, guessing 16 gallon fuel tank increasing your usual fill up cost by about 5% @3$/gal. the question is how much, starting now, the extra oil cost meeting up with the cost of a gasket repair kit. I'm guessing 3-4 months.

>>17184127 here. The car has been a blast to drive. Today I changed spark plugs, but it introduced the valve knocking sound, after some research, it turns out the parts shop ordered plugs for a newer model of Lancer.

Now, old plugs were Bosch WR7DC+ and they worked, the owners manual that came with the car tells to use either NGK BPR5ES or Denso W16EPR.
This is where it gets interesting, pic related. It says the spark plug gap is supposed to be 0,75mm, Bosch plugs that were in comes close at 0,8mm, Denso´s are 0,8mm too, and NGK at 0,9mm.

1) electrode material degrades as plugs are used, which could appear as a larger than specified gap when manually measured
>flat electrodes are new electrodes
2) copper and iron-nickel plugs can be re-gapped
and to a degree refurbished
https://www.jackssmallengines.com/diy/how-to-service-your-spark-plugs/

re-gap unless it's a non-gappable electrode like Iridium (which neither of the ones you specified are)
only operation can help decide to keep new gap or reset to 0.8mm
>more fuel usage for a small gap, increased electrode wear for a larger gap
>copper is best electrode material in terms of conductivity but lasts the shortest time, usually 15 to 20K miles

get a long piece of hose with a twist/turn valve that you can stick into the end. you sit in the car, run the hose ALL the way to the car and open the bleeder screw and start pumping the air out of the extension hose and be sure to keep your clutch fluid topped off. should take maybe 4-5 bleeds before you see fluid start to run into the jar in the car. then just keep going until you have fresh clean fluid. I'm assuming you know proper bleeding procedures. You'll just need more fluid than normal since you'll have a long hose to fill before you see progress.
>>
>>17190547
for metal fittings with fluid going through them you will ALWAYS need some sort of thread sealer. the microscopic gaps on the pipes/fittings are huge and will leak without the thread sealer.
>>
which is better, a 5L V8 or a 5L V6? why?
>>
>>17192977
Simply by design, I think the v8 would be better, smoother power delivery, doesnt have to work as hard assuming both engines have the same power output. The v6 needs a lot of extra aids to smooth itself out, just look at any v6 mercedes. But it does weigh less, could possibly have a higher redline since it has less rotational mass.

I've got like 4 inches of wheel gap in the rear, but when one person is in the rear it rubs on corners and bumps. With 2 people it rubbed so bad that when I tried to limp it home I popped a tire and bent a rim.

Before I decide to either buy a brand new wheel or a new set can someone help me figure out why it's rubbing so bad. When in doubt, youtube out. I already had a decent amount of mechanical experience but had never messed with differential gears before. Purely from watching youtube videos and reading forums I was able to completely rebuild a Ford 8.8 axle with new bearings, gears and a locker and it runs quiet with a great pattern.

As for the brakes..
If you haven't already, grab a can of WD-40 or PB Blaster and go spray the bolts on the calipers now so they'll be nice and loosey goosey for you tomorrow (at least you hope).
Also take care to make sure the new pads are inserted properly.. I have no idea how but it seems like some people are able to fuck that up and put them in wrong which is obviously no bueno.

no, that usually has a washer or something to keep it sealed, plus you wouldn't want any thread sealer in your oil. I was thinking more of any fittings on the car that come from the factory with any sort of thread locker. sometimes autoshops put thread locker or some kind of sealer on the oil drain bolts.

Seems like everyone recommends them for any part of the car, but never seen the manual say so except for the differential fluid plugs.

Thanks for all the help guys. I´ll be getting the NGKs instead of refurbing the old ones.
Now im not sure if it was my eyes or was I looking at the wrong page when I though that the gap on NGK was 0,9mm.
I´ll leave the refurbishing of plugs for some other time when I have more experience in the matter.
The old plugs do still work, but since I just got this and its been sitting in the barn for like 4 years before taken back into road and there is no big history on services, i´d rather just change all fluids, plugs and such just to keep my mind at ease.

> I'd just find an auto parts store and order some NGK plugs of the right year model and put those in instead of trying to refurbish your old bosch plugs.
The funny thing is, I went to a local autoparts place, and the woman on the counter checked which ones fit for my car by using the license plate number. After putting them in and realizing these are wrong ones I checked out and these plugs (NGK BPR6ES) are fit for Lancers made from 1985 forwards with the different engine.
Lesson learned, never should trust shops blindly.

About to go buy my first manual. Was going to have a friend who knows how to drive it come with me and coach me while i drive it back home, but hes busy. I know the theory, but have no experience. Can i get a basic run down of what to do when driving stick? For example, if im coming to a stop should i put it in N and coast, then leave it in N and hold the brake? How do i know when to shift? I know you can hear and feel it, but again no experience. Normally id just wing it and probably fifure it out, but im going to have to drive it roughly 40 miles.

The heatsheild for my catalytic has rusted around the bolt on one corner and dropped. Its hanging like 6 in from the ground.

I dont really have the means to drop my exhaust to put a new one in.

Would it be a bad idea to cut off the hanging end with a reciprocating saw or dremel? Would it make the section of underbody vulnerable to cat heat?
>>
>>17197480
coast in gear up to lights and stops, better for gas mileage. When the rpm drops to about 1000, you can slip it into neutral and use the brake for the rest of the trip, if you slow down too much and wont reach the light, just move it to first and roll up more. Usually under 2k is when the car lugs so shift higher than 3 and you should land above 2k. Just remember when you stall at a light, which you will, don't PANIC. you will continue to stall, panic when you get honked at and will be red from embarrassment. Dont worry about it, you're learning, everyone can fuck off.

It's not cheap, but not really that expensive either.
I have an incredibly basic understanding of cars so I'm looking for some pointers.

I can't pick and choose from a large variety of cars, because traveling expenses would kill my budget.
I'm only interested in manual transmissions so that also narrows down my choices.

I have no idea what that is or why it kind of looks like an Audi but for a first car, look for quotes and parts for repair work.

I don't know shit about cars, I own a 2007 Honda accord LE. When I drive slow upwards to 20mph, the vehicle shakes bad until it reaches 40mph. I've taken it to a mechanic but they said everything is fine. I am worried because I've almost crashed in it due to it shaking.
>>
>>17198280
>but they said everything is fine
>the vehicle shakes bad

Someone is lying, but ill take your side. My first guess that one of your rims is bent, maybe in the rear since you didnt specify you feel the shaking in the steering wheel. Most out of balance stuff smooths out if you spin it fast enough. example, a misfiring car feels smoother at a higher rpm than idle. Take it to a proper mechanic, or look around on the wheels, or if your tires have an uneven wear pattern. Next step would be to check the axles.

Or is it stupid and wears out my synchros?

It doesn't really seem to do anything to the car aside from the engine revving to about 4k rpm momentarily. It should be worth noting that I let go of the clutch pretty slowly.

Should shift it to 3rd before the 2nd?

Someone hit my car today. Got his insurance info, and he admitted fault. Took pics of the impact, but it really just looked like a horizontal scuff that'll buff out. Checked it out in better light at home and saw a slight dent. Hardly noticeable unless you look for it. Now, normally I wouldn't give a fuck, but I'm trying to sell it. My question is, should I:

a) Hand buff the scuff and just sell it because it's not noticeable unless you look for it. Car otherwise doesn't have any damage. It's relatively new.
b) File a claim on his insurance to get it fixed, have the dent repaired before selling. I'm afraid any buyers might see that on a Carfax report and run away

I like the look of these and supposedly they have good handling and good ride quality. However everyone says they are one of the worst moneypits you can buy.

>Mazda RX-7 FC / FD
Again these cars are supposed to have exceptional handling, good ride quality and IIRC FD had the best brakes out of the cars from it's day.I also love the looks these cars especially the FCs. However I'm turned off by the special snowflake engines namely their bad mpg, constant need of oil, need of constant maintenance and occasional rebuilds and supposed unreliability of the turbo versions.

>Mitsubishi 3000GT / GTO
Supposedly very comfy grand tourer that IMO is much more interesting than it's more popular and better known Japanese rivals from the era with very unique looks. However it also has a reputation of being one of the most unreliable cars out there.

It looks all the cars I'd like to own are unreliable moneypits. Is there a car that is somewhat sporty, has good ride quality and is more reliable than the aforementioned examples while still being in the same price range?

Talk me out of it /o/

I'm just thinking of saying fuck it, cleaning my car up nice and trading it in at a dealer for cash on site and buying an under 1-2k shitbox so at least if I have problems its a matter of I bought a cheap piece of shit and not I spent 4k on something I'd hoped would at least get me down the road.

I'm not gonna try and sell this thing privately, its not worth my time and I've grown to just hate seeing it, because every time I start it its a miracle if something else doesn't break. Buying this car was the stupidest thing I've done in a long time between the dozens of issues it has and the new ones that rear their ugly heads every week or so.

My issue is I'm in Ontario, so choices are limited and I have no idea on how getting safety works or anything, which I'd definitely need to do at that price range.

Should I just go for it? Or should I put my money into this car I can't stand being around in hopes that it'll come back to being the car I test drove, not the one I took home? It'll probably be 1-1.5k to get it fixed up right now and rising.

Do "competition" parts for manual transmissions make you have to shift faster/sooner? Bought my first manual and the ad said they replaced some of the trans parts with competition ones. While driving i can go from 1-3 in like 10 seconds if i listen to the engine. If i was shifting too early how would i know? Ive managed to shift relatively smoothly up to 3rd while only at 30 mph or so i think. If i listen to the engine, it eventually sounds like im just reving it and not actuall speeding up. Ive been shifting there, but that leads to me being in 3rd while at 30 like i said.

Slowly let off the clutch until you feel the car start to move, then give it gas. Memorize the point it started to move; that's the bite point. Practice to make it smoother / less revs. Obviously you don't want to be stalling, but it won't kill your car in the long run
>>
>>17203391
This is just a guess, but it would make sense for competition parts to shorten the gears since you get better acceleration and top speed and fuel economy aren't as important in racing,

I'd just let it be until it doesn't work as expected anymore, then look into it but start putting some money aside for repairs now.

So I lost one of my keys to my MB GLK350. I still have the original. Can I buy a blank key blade and a shell and then have it cut and reprogrammed or will I have to buy a replacement key, cause I'd rather not have to spend $200-$300 on a key.
