[[WELSH MIDNIGHT TOUGE EDITION]]

A thread for the British denizens of /o/.

Brit/o/ Garage: https://www.brit-o.co.uk/

----

Upcoming Brit/o/ Events:

Welsh Togue Run
What: Driving around in Wales I guess. Glancing fearfully over our shoulders in case Devil Will shows up.
When: June/July
Where: To be decided

Ultimate Street Car (USC)
What: A car show where loads of chavs show up and show off their Limited Edition Corsas and financed Golfs on airbags. Also drag-racing, live music, and poledancing.
Where: Santa Pod Raceway (Northamptonshire)
When: 4th-6th August 2017

----

Recent Happenings:

A load of Welshies and some traitors from England all met up to do some midnight mountain running. Cars in attendance were:
- Nissan K11 Micra
- Toyota MR2 AW11
- Ford Fiesta Zetec S
- Pegueot 205 motherfucking RALLEYE
- Honda CRZ (Blackbox special)

All in all, reported to be a good run on some good roads save for the cattlegrids of alignment death. No-one died to Devil Will either.

----

Threads are a rarity as we mostly hang out in our own dedicated Slack chat. If you want in, just post up your email (it can be a throwaway), and you'll be invited in. We do actually discuss things of an automotive nature, don't fear. It's not all degeneracy.

These are red flags when it comes to buying secondhand. Escorts are badly made and most have since rusted away. Estate means it's been owned by some chav builder and not looked after it. Diesel means expensive repairs compared to a petrol equivalent. It'll probably break down within a week. I'd be interested to see the reg plate to see its MOT history and possible advisories.

I bought a £900 Fiat that had 12 months MOT, and it exploded after a month, I put more money into it than I paid for it. Having an MOT means nothing. I wouldn't touch a thing that old for that little money, especially not an Escort.
>>

>>
>>17169039
100% Correct
>>
>>17168917
>11 months mot on it then its a good buy
You do know an MOT isn't a warranty? He could buy the bag of shit and after a week, have to deal with the inevitable coolant problems these cars are plagued with. In those 11 months, he's likely to end up spending more than he paid trying to keep it on the road. He needs to save up and spend a £1000 minimum on a car.
>>
>>17169259
are you seriously this thick

you don't spend any money on it that's the point the only reason for the mot is to ensure it's road legal, it doesn't matter if it's a clapped out pile of shit that hardly runs at the end of the 11 months because you just take it to the scrap yard and get your £50 pounds for it
>>
>>17169275
I'm the guy that's looking to buy the shitbox tomorrow, I've been passed it a few times and have stopped to give it a couple of look overs on dry, sunny days. It's not a looker but it does appear to be solid.

I'm going to view it while the owner is there so I can hear it run and possibly run up and down the road in it just to make sure it actually drives because that is all I really care about as long as I can actually drive it, then it is fine
>>
>>17169275
>if it's a clapped out pile of shit that hardly runs

But it does matter if it hardly runs. There's literally no point in insuring and taxing something that hardly runs. He might as well spend the money on taxi fares. And if it stops running, the you'll have to pay a scrap yard to take it away, not the other way around.

I reckon for 300 quid you could get a lot worse than a 300 escort diesel desu.

If its the same asthmatic one from the escort van they're fucking incredibly reliable engines. Don't listen to people who've bought a fucking fiat. If it runs fine, and the sills are mostly metal, you can't see ground through the floorpan - it'll be a great bus m8. Don't let the haters piss you off. I drove a £250 1.9D XUD-engined 405 for two years while my mates struggled to pay off shitheap 5k dealer cars as I got tyres for a tenner at the scrappies and carted mates engines in the back haha
>>
>>17169850
how easy is it to get tires from a scrap yard?
>>
>>17169863
Just buy wheels and sell them your old one. If you can, get a wheel and tyre under your jumper and simply exchange the wheel and tyre with the one on the vehicle
>>

I used to get 4x100 14/15" scrap car wheels with the best tyres you could find in the place for 10 quid a pop! Depended what dipshit was at the counter. Couple of years ago got one for gfs micra for 13 quid so its not went up much

I've never even been to a race track, I don't have a huge interest in motorsport to be honest
>>
>>17172826
Well, to answer your question without sarcasm, people travel an awful long way to race their cars/bikes and the people who do it either professionally or even just often as a hobby tend to bring big caravans and creature comforts to the track as they're camping so often.
>>
>>17172895
I understand that aspect of it, people with too much money to spend bring along kitted out race trucks that hold everything they could ever need, I didn't realise the meet was on the grounds of a race course
>>
>>17172921
Ah I see, yeah we try to keep events car-centric but still cater for WAGs and people who don't like cars all that much but are part of the /o/ community. We're in a kind of weird position where everyone who had a POS double digit horsepower shitbox has moved on to bigger and better things too quickly to establish a proper shitbox racing series lel so if you drive a Micra or something come along

Nearly every other range rover i see has some vanity plate on it to remind us plebian poorfags that i'll never spend £80k on an unreliable 3 ton status symbol while my wife is getting blacked on the regular.

Tho i did see a Merc SL with "LOL V8" on it years ago.
>>
>>17193038
I'm not sure how putting a plate on it is what reminds you that you'll never spend £80k on a Range Rover. That seems more like you being salty because you can't afford a Range Rover
>>
>>17193357
I can't imagine ever owning a Range Rover not due to price though that is a factor but they are too nice for me and there is too much going on. I don't even like electric windows or mirrors, I want my cars to as simple as they can possibly be

We have a Land Rover Disco Sport because we needed a large car that could comfortably seat 7, had a load of cargo space, had 4WD because we live on like a 30 degree incline in the country and other cars can't get off the drive in the snow/ice, but also we wanted decent styling, Sat Nav, bluetooth, parking sensors, cruise control, auto lights, auto wipers, a manual gearbox, air conditioned seats, and a luxury interior. We've never taken it off road, but amazingly, that's not the only use for them.

that ones not mine, just as close as i could find. Mines white, and is pretty much the lowest spec you could get (1.0, no radio, etc), but figure thats just a decent exuse to drop a decent engine into it. dont want to go full chav with it, just lower it a bit and stick some cavalier alloys on it (the bbs style ones). Il try to dig out some photos, but they are pretty mcuh all from when I found it, so it looks like shit
>>
>>17196500

nah, got to get a load of welding done. half of it was sat in a hedge for like 6 years or so, desu it isnt too bad considering where it sat, but its not going to be legal for a while. Either gonna pay someoe else to do it, or just try to teach myself and do it. Tbh im thinking of doing both, getting someone else to dothe bad bits, then just sort the bits that dont matter myself
>>
>>17196500

Is it worth spending the money on a 1.0 Nova when you'll sell it in a couple of years and get something nice anyway?

You sound like you're 17. spending cash on the car is pretty pointless, save it and then once you get cheap insurance buy something nice like an E30 325i

>>
>>17197557
>>17196695
20, got it like 8 years ago, didnt cost me anything when i got it cause this was before the ((scrappage scheme)), so old cars were cheap. basically jusy drove it around in a field cause I was way to young to drive on the roads. pulled it out of a hedge like 2 years ago and its been sitting in my garage since. done a bit ofwork on it here and there (getting engine to run, brakes, cleaning it up) but I have enough money now to actually consider getting it welded up. DESU considering how much crap it had been though it was solid, worst bits were rust and exhaust. I figure with the amount I have into it i can afford to get it welded and still not really be a a loss.

I would totally come to one of these meets, however I live in Yorkshire so getting to wales isn't easy.
>>
>>17208104

>Blown, replaced and on the way out again.

If you had a multilayer steel headgasket put in, it shouldn't go again.

I have replaced loads of k series headgaskets and never had one come back.
