The only thing one could say is revolutionary about the 4A-GE is the T-VIS variable inlet manifold system and maybe the back then novelty of a DOHC multivalve engine (but it wasn't the first, specially in japan). All else is pretty much well proven technology.

You could argue that Porsche isn't precisely a high volume manufacturer, and even then...the 4A-GE wasn't the first toyota engine to use T-VIS.

Really, more than revolutionary, I would say the 4A-GE is an example of an engine made good because of the use of well proven technology and design ideas.
