Checked the archive, didn't see a Miata General.

Today marks 5 weeks of searching for any clean M edition NA for up to 5500$. I've test driver two that turned out to be piles of shit, one owner lied and didn't even have the title for it. Anyone have any tips for landing an NA that isn't a fucked up craigslist car? I'm in San Diego, didn't expect finding a clean convertible to be so difficult.

Honestly just over my E39, tired of BMW guys scoffing at me because it isn't an M5 so I'd rather be back in the Japanese crowd. I'm full time at work and school together now and couldn't maintain both cars at the standard I desire.

Personally I wouldn't buy it based on what it looks like. But if you like go check it out to make sure it doesnt have rust.

They are shit. That "digital" dash is cheap looking and gay. Fucking push button start but you have to use a key so wtf is the point? They aren't that reliable compared to other Honda products of that era. Ricer tax even worse than le hair dresser car. Jose will tail you on the way home and strip your car while you're asleep (this happens regularly, which is why half of them have salvage titles nowadays). Basically, get a Miata (NA) or get a new Miata (ND).

Alright, advice wanted.

I've been looking for a miata for a couple months and in my area they're between 2k (shitty) and 7k (overpriced), with most between 3500-6000.

However, just saw this on Craigslist. It's a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata (turbo) with ~97k miles and it looks like it's in decent condition. The price is 5.2k, which seems normal for a non-MS miata. It sounds like people have problems with the factory ECU tune and gearing, so I don't know if the MSM is actually better or worse. While I'd love to have a turbo I don't have money to sink into one and I'd rather have no issues than a faster miata. Is it worth it, or should I just look for a regular miata?

Dropped my wheels off for powder coating a couple weeks ago and went Friday to pick them up. The place made a mistake with them, so now they need to be redone. It'll probably be at least another 2 weeks until I get them back and am able to take my Miata out for the year.

Good car. Steering feel is a little numb because it's an early electric rack. AP1s were designed to fuck your shit up for being a bad driver. Harsh ride if you use typical summer tires...it's kinda better to use softer all-season tires to make the ride more compliant. For the insane price premium that clean S2Ks command these days (there's a dealership near me that's trying to offload an 8-owner 2001 for $20K), a Boxster S is a better deal.

Always been of the opinion that pressurizing the bay and bypassing the rad wasn't the best idea.

Have you done a coolant reroute or larger rad?
>>
>>17142129
Yeah ofc. The scoop is just for the intake, not meant to cool the engine bay. I'm thinking of adding a vent above the turbo though to equalize the pressure.
>>
>>17142148
Above the turbo is almost the best neg press zone to put a vent anyway so long as you're venting out of the bay.

How are the cabin temps after a quick blat around the cones?
>>
>>17142154
The car doesn't really get hot since the runs are over so quick, if anything it's more likely to overheat while staging in the paddock.

Cabin temps aren't too bad in general, tons of heat from the trans tunnel but not nearly as bad as my last miata which had no carpet
>>
Tossing up between 15x7's with Direzzas or something, or getting a set of Tein Flex Z's,
both will cost me the same.

DESU I don't need wider/stickier tyres but the stock daisies don't sit well with me, then on the other hand if I really go hard in a corner when they're warm I get the feeling the body roll would be horrific with wider tyres still on stock shocks.

>>17144894
There are online guides/YouTube vids and stuff. If you really don't want to learn about how it works you can just use the default tune to drive it to a tuning shop and they can do it for you.

The wideband isn't bad to do but you might want to buy an o2 sensor socket. It can get stuck sometimes.

This just popped up at a local dealer. Has 215K miles on it. From the pictures it looks like its in good shape. Dealer says its been very well maintained. By the photos the interior and exterior looks to be in great shape.

I'm planning on test driving it soon. If everything drives/works correctly and I see and hear no issues mechanically or body wise....

is the high mileage something I should worry about?

This is going to be a DIY car of sorts I plan to change minor things such as wheels and suspension as well as minor cosmetic stuff.
I just don't want my first project with this car to be an engine rebuild lol.

The closest mechanic wants 800$. Do i just bite the bullet or should i just replace them myself.
Never worked on a car before but it seems simple enough, just pop the valve cover, clean it and put in the gasket and some RTV.

I don't know where you live but tracks aren't just something you can casually roll up to any day of the week here. They are on a strict schedule booked out months in advance to various track day and racing organizations. The actual number of days available through a non-private organization is quite low. I probably have five or so tracks within a 2hr radius of me. I check frequently and there are really only 1-2 opportunities to go a month. The rest of the month these places are all booked for other motorsport events.

The mechanic apparently threw in a bunch of shit i didnt ask for like changing timing belts and water pumps, hence the price is inflated.
Just the oil and gasket still ran for 300$ so im doing it myself.
Wish me luck lads.

Mine is at 135k and it's definitely a mechanical chore. Just did the ball joints, shocks, ARB drop links and brakes but my bushings are toast and it's not the original engine. I'm sure you could get lucky but I think most cars over 100k miles are going to have issues sooner or later.

Just pasting what I asked in a Discord since I got no fucking help.

miata has blown head gasket from previous owner
is it worth it to pay a machine shop to clean it up and level it again
or do i just get a refurbished head off of ebay
machine shop work seems really expensive and i can get a new head for $400
then i could theoretically just swap the new head on and not have a dead car sitting until the shop is done working on it

I live in a city and park on the side of the road so I don't think having the head completely removed for days at a time is really an option. I'm paranoid someone would report it as like a non-running vehicle and have it towed or something shitty like that. If I buy a refurb'd and built head off of ebay I don't have to risk much of anything. And just dropping a new head on seems like it would solve any problems aside from if the cooling system was the failure to begin with, which I've yet to actually find out. I do plan on thoroughly inspecting it though.

I guess I'm asking if getting a refurb'd head is my best option? It seems much more time effective and almost more cost effective as well. Only other things to buy would be, what, a head gasket and head bolts? Possibly the water pump / timing belt as well. Then, again, possibly cooling system related parts like a radiator, thermostat, etc.

Also trying to narrow down what could've caused the gasket to fail to begin with. I removed each spark plug (cover?) and saw there was oil in cylinder one and none of the other ones. Is there a chance the head isn't warped? Should I take it apart and use a level / straight edge to be sure anyways? I guess if it's not warped I can just slap a new gasket on there and call it good.

Engine does have 205k on it, is it just natural failure?

Thanks guys.

>>
>>17154665
The gasket failure was probably caused by overheating. It could be possible that the head wasn't torqued down enough but I doubt that, so you'll want to go over your cooling system before popping a fixed head in there. Whether you get your existing head milled or buy a refurbed one is up to you. Maybe there's a machine shop that can do expedited turnaround and get it to you same day?

plates aren't specific to a car and aren't tracked. VIN is all that matters to carfax. If a seller doesn't have VIN in the CL/Autotrader ad, he's either retarded or trying to hide something.

>>17133670
Hang in there bud. I'm in SD too and it took me a month of daily searching on CL to find something even remotely close to what I wanted (1.8 w/ torsen). There's so much garbage on there, and they gems are priced accordingly.

I'd say to broaden your scope of what you want exactly. There's a lot of good miatas on SD CL, but not NAs, and maybe not M. I've seen a few on CL that appear to be pretty good deals, at least worth checking out.

2000 w/ hardtop, 82k miles, needs paint, tan interior (LSD??), asking 3.8k

Hope you find something you like man, I lvoe seeing miatas cruising
>>
>>17140373
Not that a replaced motor is a bad thing at all, but it does raise a few questions i'd ask the guy. Why would the motor need replaced? at such low mileage?

The price seems 'too good to be true', since MSM sell for well over 7k, and at less than 100k miles, probably more. A test drive wouldn't hurt, if everything checks out and nothing is wrong with it, 5k is an incredible deal.

I've personally never heard of any ECU issues, but i've never been around the MSM scene.
>>
>>17144929
For the most part miatas are pretty bulletproof. If it's a 1.8 I can't think of any super common issues. I'd say to expect at least a small oil leak, as it seems all miatas suffer from this with age. Honestly.. if it runs good you really shouldn't have any issues. If you've bought a used car before you should be set.
>>
>>17145967
Form the pics it looks like it was taken care of. This is a really good sign since miatas can run for well over 200k if properly looked after. TO answer your question, no the mileage is not something to worry about. If everything checks out, it looks solid. Check for major leaks and be on the lookout for oil burning (you'll see it or smell it). This obvious all depends on how much they want for it. The price should reflect the high mileage, even if the car is immaculate.

I own a 94 w/ 316k miles. Stock engine (stock everything as far as I know) up until last year, I got too tired of dealing with oil burning. Besides that the engine ran perfect considering how much I beat it.
>>
>>17135995
For the record, only the impedence has to match. It's usually 4 Ohms.
Most speakers at the same price point sound about the same. Kenwood and JBL are good value brands imo. There are others.
If you want your sound system to actually sound good in a Miata you will need a good amp powering your speakers, which usually also means upgrading your alternator.
Sinply dropping in a $200 head unit and $100 speakers will not make much of an improvement in the sound quality.
>>
>>17140373
They work, as in they are plenty reliable, but the ecu has lots of hickups that reduce power in a frustrating way. The intake should be replaced completely, and a better BOV and manual boost controller would be good to do. Flyin Miata has all this stuff for a few hundred dollars, and it can be swapped out in like 2 hours with very basic tools.
At some point you can upgrade to a Megasquirt PNP EMS and get it running the way it should.
The gearing would be fantastic for an NA but on a turbo it doesn't make sense. It's not terrible though.

Overall yeah absolutely I would go for it. My only hesitation is why did he have to replace the motor after 65k miles? He's probably doing stupid shit to it.

I'm the guy with stuck brakes.
Can a missing spring (pic related bottom spring missing) cause the pads to jam? Or is it more likely that I have a massive play on brake disc and pads are probably older than me?
>>
>>17133670
Yo

I have one I'm looking to sell for $5K. New top, installed by a guy that knows his shit. New rear bearings, timing belt in the last 4K miles. New OEM radiator.

I'm out in San Antonio

It's not as clean as the one in your picture, but it's all stock and mechanically fine. If you got new seats (roughly $500) and minor paint correction (super minor, just a couple spots. Car got a new clear coat a couple years ago)

Honestly it's a pretty nice car, but i want something bigger
>>
>>17162122
no. the springs are used to keep the pads together. some racers even remove them entirely to eliminate the tiny bit of drag they cause.

what do you mean when you say "stuck"?

that looks like your rear brake caliper judging by the e-brake mechanism. are you sure the e-brake isn't adjusted correctly?
>>
>>17162193
A week ago or so the brakes on rear didn't disengage properly. Went to a point where they actually smoked. The weird thing was that the problem went away as it came.
When I lifted the car and turned the wheel I could feel resistance although e-brake was released.

I adjusted the e-brake as you can see on pic above and solved the problem, what means that mechanism is working fine. I don't know if the e-brake distance could changed for no reason
>>
>>17160987
i have heard good things as well
are you sure you want high dust though? your wheels look like shit really quickly
>>
>>17159820
i've got mintex m1144s on mine, seem alright so far. i heard pretty mixed things about EBC greens and yellows. in particular some people seem to rate the OEM ones above the greens
>>
>>17162223
>I don't know if the e-brake distance could changed for no reason

yes it can. i don't know why but my passenger rear caliper always loosens up on me. i need to replace it soon
>>
>>17162253
Oh well then I just make a big deal out of nothing. Thanks
>>
>>17162223
Pull the calipers. Remove the slide pins. Clean and polish the pins. Clean the pin channels inside the caliper. Be very thorough. Use some synthetic grease. Apply liberally.
>>
>>17162375
I could slide the assembly freely, felt like it was lubed properly.
>>
>>17162426
If the slide pins are moving freely, check handbrake adjustment and brake lines. Aged brake likes can contract, keeping pressure in the system.

Always worth cleaning and re-lubing the slide pins anyway. And the pad springs (at least on mine) force the pads off of the rotor, but really don't do much of anything against the force of the caliper. They are there more so to prevent rattling of the pads inside the assembly.
>>
>>17162450
Played a little on handbrake slider, that should do for now. Will change brakes soon anyway, but I don't have the money at the moment.

If it does end up being a sensor, like the camshaft sensor, Planet Miata is a decent source of used parts. http://www.planet-miata.com/index.php?section=31630995
>>
>>17163718
You use a socket wrench without a socket on the end (just an extension) and clip it into the squares at the end of the 'wrench'. Turning/pushing on the socket wrench will then loosen the filter.

Crank sensor on the NA doesn't do anything but make the cel flash when it detects a misfire. The cam angle sensor is the actual part that deals with ignition timing. That's why only 96 and 97 had crank position sensors, for OBD2 compliance
>>
>>17164141
you got an angle of the part I care about or wat's goin on
>>
So I have a high idle of about 2k, sometimes it drops to 850, but it always creeps back up

I have no vacuum leaks... is the iac fucked? I turned the idle screw all the way down just to get it to do the 850 every now and then
>>
>>17164721
Riding on this, My idle chugs down to like 400 then bounces back up to 850, ESPECIALLY when coming to a stop. Ideas?
>>
>>17163914

People use "crank" and "cam" sensor interchangeably in the NA world. They always mean the sensor on the back of the camshaft.
>>
>>17164769

Put the car into diagnostic mode (jump TEN and GND in the diagnostic box with a paperclip) and adjust your idle position screw on the throttle body.

I guess I can understand why Mazda never made a coupe version of the Miata. I'm guessing it would've eaten somewhat into RX-7 & RX-8 sales.

I'm redoing the entire interior, there was some rust on the tin (but not on the frame), the seats suck, and the console is cracked.
I'm just trying to figure out where to start.
>>
>>17167741
Change every fluid that you don't know exactly when the last time it was done. Timing belt/water pump if it's over 100k. Clean engine bay, watch for signs of leaks, replace the VC gasket/CAS o-ring. Radiator if it's brown/yellow topped.
>>
>>17167755
I won't even be driving the car for a few months.
Right now, I'm stripping everything down and going on a hunt for rust. The cabin was fine, luckily. I don't have as good a feeling about the trunk. The carpet padding was soaked in both when I removed.
The radio also doesn't work so the speakers and the radio are getting replaced.
The steering wheel is fucked so that's getting replaced. I'm going to hit up RevLimiter for some new gauges and lights while I'm at it.
It's going to be probably 3-4 months before I even get to the engine.
