I got called in for overtime today, which turns my 24 into a 72. Fuck being home, I guess.

Anyway, I got a number thrown at me for this truck I found a couple weeks back. $900, no drive train. I know Fords of that era are notoriously rotty, but if this one isn't completely garbage, is that a decent price? Keep in mind I don't have a motor on hand to drop in it at the moment.

I mean. If the whole truck is in pretty decent shape, then it's an okay price. But I paid $750, or $549US for this 73 Dent side, only had to replace a starter and a brake line to get it road worthy, then a gas tank a bit later

It was really a bonus that the truck didn't start, cause there had been quite a few people before me that looked at it, but once I met up with the dude selling it, I told him on the spot I wouldn't dicker with the price he seemed glad to sell it too me. look for frame rot, look for the condition of the windshield (they are about 500 a pop or so), look for rust in the fenderwells, look for rust in the bumper supports, look for rust pretty much everywhere.

basically this frame and these trucks were the exact same from 1965 to 1977 (or 79 if you count some minor changes)

you can swap pretty much any engine, any front suspension, and almost all parts interchangably between these years.

these brakes are from a '77 that I'll be swapping into my '65 (eventually).

your starter relay is wired incorrectly. The sooner you admit this fact the sooner you can be driving your truck.

I recommend it. a slickside is really fun, but rust will kill these things
>these are the rear springs on my camper special
>>
>>17128206
the starter relay is wired the exact way it has been wired for the past three years.

But I am keeping it under consideration. I have a few new cables and non rusted to shit mounting hardware to put in when I get the chance.
>>
>>17128218
>the starter relay is wired the exact way it has been wired for the past three years.
If it clicks once when you turn the key the ignition circuit isn't being completed because the relay is wired wrong.
Go back and do it again.
>past three years
Stop lying, you've already posted that you changed the relay twice.
>>
>>17128201
Also look for rust on the rear shock mounts. They are notorious for rusting off the frame on Chevy/Gmc and Ford trucks around those years. And floorpans and cab mounts of course, don't forget those.
Even if it has no engine or trans, a 300/302/351 with a C3 combo should be super easy to find really
>>
>>17128191
Probably will have too in all honesty

Thanks for the advice
>>
>>17128235
I changed the relay twice, but I put it all back together as I had gotten it, and as I had replaced it 3 years ago.
>>
>>17128210

I've never been a Ford guy, but I can appreciate the older stuff. Could be a fun summer project.

>>17128237

Thanks. A buddy of mine is looking at getting two Lincoln Continentals, and has already offered the 360 from the parts car if he goes through with it. So that's neat.
>>
>>17128244
Then you clearly did something incorrectly. If you jumper the terminals on the starter and it cranks but when you turn the key and it clicks once then the relay is the problem and the problem is how you wired it. There is no other way about it. It's wired incorrectly. You may have confused two wires or something. Start from the ground up.
>>
>>17128255
No Lincoln ever came with a 360 though
>>
>>17128256
here's the real issue.

I jumped the terminal, put power directly to the starter, and nothing happened. Took the starter off, brought it to oreilley's and bench tested it, and the starter fired instantly. The battery is good, the solenoid is good.

That leads the last thing I can expect, which is a bad ground. And you know what? when I pulled the ground cable off the copper was nearly black and the connection to the block was corroded to fuck. I got a new ground cable that I have to put in, I just haven't had the time to take care of it lately.
>>
>>17128154
>I'm assuming dropping an engine in would be like any other vehicle if the era, fairly easy?

Well, yeah. Go look at your Intertrashional to see how hard it would be:

>4 water hoses (2 rad, 2 heater)
>1 fuel line
>2 exhaust pipes (Can be a bitch. I recommend replacing the bolts with double-nutted stainless bolts)
>1 hydraulic clutch line (maybe)

>2 wires on the starter
>2 on the alternator
>1 on the coil
>1 on the water temp sending unit
>1 on the oil sending unit
>1 on the block

>6 bolts on the bellhousing
>4 on those stupid dogbone mounts (which the Ferd won't have)

>You'll have to take the carb off to mount the lifting plate

The Ford will have the added advantage of a physically smaller and lighter engine, too.
>>
>>17128262

Typo, 460 with a C6 transmission.
>>
>>17128277

>curse the very thought of vapor lock
I've done what I can with simple mods.
The fuel lines up to the pump turned out to be steel hard-line so I didn't end up moving the pump, but I insulated the lines with aluminum foil tape and after some spirited driving the lines felt warm but I could hold on to them indefinitely, which puts their temperature below 50, maybe 55*C or so. What probably also helps is that the fuel line from the pump is no longer routed behind the alternator bracket up against the cylinder head. I used a piece of wire to guide it before insulating it as well.

I hope this is enough.
>>
>>17128391
why not use a foam insulator? then it doesn't look like your fuel line is a conspiracy theorist.

The ONLY perk of being single is that I can buy whatever car I want WHENEVER I want BECAUSE I want. Though, a '66 Lincoln Continental and a '68 Cadillac are both on my list to acquire. The last cars on my list, barring an inheritance, are as follows:
>Pre-1955 Packard
>1966 Lincoln Continental
>1968 Cadillac

So far, my current collection contains:
>1966 Imperial
>1967 Rolls Royce
>1978 Excalibur
>1979 Lincoln Mark V Bill Blass
>1981 DeLorean
>1984 Fiero Indy

It's easier to acquire cars than it is to find a potential spouse, so, if I build up my collection beforehand, I won't be buying any afterwards. Hell, if the woman is ignorant of cars; as most are, if the Cadillac, Continental, and Imperial are the same color, it might be YEARS before she realizes they're different cars.

As I wrote: Good things will come to those who can wait.

Damn, I sure had my share in dating cunts, wasting years with wrong women. But at the end of the day everything went fine.

And to keep it on topic: My wife is such a fine woman, that she didnt even lift an eyebrow when I told her that I want to buy myself a 70s truck.

You have to keep in mind that I live in germany where everything "old+US" is expensive as hell.

Still sitting here, waiting that my 75 F100 gets finished. I bought it 3 weeks ago (only paid several hundred Euromoneys as down-payment) and now it has to get through all the wonderful corners of the german car registration system for foreign cars, has to get technical clearance and - the most important thing - has to be recognized as "automibile historical worthy"

That means the car is at least 30 years old, in good overall condition, no mean rust, no over the top modding. If it is like that, it slips off the regular german trail of "displacement and emission class"-tax and gets 192 Eurobucks yearly tax fixed (also about the same ammount for insurance which is piss-cheap)

So thats it for my old truck and my good wife. And I really hope that you'll find someone whos like mine.

Not much, the final drive ratio is ass.

>completely revamp the carb design in 5 years so that literally every line and hose is no longer compatible.

So, now, I'm going to be designing my OWN fuel system for the Rolls Royce and, unlike the factory one, it will have parts with sane costs, rubber fuel hoses, and actually make SENSE!

I think it took about the same to get mine.

It sucks because most vehicles get a template you cut out, for the caprice it says measure 2.xx inches above the car's belt line...

arrgh. I'm just paranoid, my buddy who is an industrial mechanic, but also a shade tree mechanic is doing it. Like I said, it's straightforward enough on youtube, but you only get one shot at it. I'm considering going to the local dealership that does the police car installs and pay to have them do it. My buddy is free, so it's a tossup.

If you have a friend that's a volly firefighter, he might be able to recommend an installer, that's trained in spotlight/emergency light installations. Just for the piece of mind. The downside, besides the cost, is that rarely do they do classics, if ever.

I'm curious as to what they would charge to do it. Should take less than an hour. (I would think). I still have yet to call and get a quote.

I have a question for the carb priests here.

I've been trying to get the 383 in my Dart running right for a while now an I can't for the fuck of me figure out if I have the carb too lean, or too rich.

Right now I have it running with open manifolds and when it's idling it shoots a pretty blue flame out both sides, can't stay in the garage too long because it will smoke you out and burn your eyes with gas fumes. Sounds like it's rich doesn't it? Well its only got a 750 holley on it, with a high duration cam, so it really shouldn't be. Then on the other hand the coolant temp skyrockets and overheats within the first couple minutes, I even put a FLIR camera on the cylinders and it's heating up like it's got a lean burn.
>>
>>17132048

Dolomite build has gotten away from me in terms of cost. I bought the vehicle for £2000 knowing that although the body was good, the rest wasn't really. When the build is finished in the next 2 weeks, i will have;

-new coilovers all round
-new front ball joints
-rebuilt engine with fast road cam and upped compression
-unleaded conversion on the cylinder head
-new steering rack
-new polybushes for front anti roll bar and steering rack mount
-new radiator
-new fuel lines
-all new coolant and heater hoses
-new black diamond stage 1 clutch

And then I'll only have the fuel tank, gearbox, back axle and a small amount of bodywork left and I'll be finished

That ceiling is when the enthusiast base begins to die off. 1920s & 1930s cars used to be the gold-tier cars at the auctions, then the group of people who saw the cars new started decreasing in number. It'll happen to boomers & their musclecars too.
>>
>>17135555
You're wrong. Look at average prewar cars. The prices hit a ceiling as people aged out. The clubs for those early cars are dying out aswell. Demand for them literally died out and so did the price. Even prices for cars like early GTOs have stagnated. I doubt the same thing will happen to late 60s muscle cars but you'll definitely see cars start to fall in price
>>
>>17135637
Keep waiting.
Your only hope is to find someone who inherited said car, and needs to sell it, as the previous owner died.

Go to the Ford Truck Enthusiasts website. It's by far the best site for those years, of which I've had several and worked on many.

Those trucks are quite reliable but I'd keep a spare ignition module and trigger setup if the one you are getting is unknown.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/

If your brakes get soft but no leaks are visible that's typically the (inexpensive) master cylinder.

I recommend a set of US line wrenches for your home shop.

Those trucks are fucking tough. Good choice.

Truthfully? I plan onowning it as an asset/Personal car that I own outright. I'm currently trying to sell a 94 caddy with a 4.9l with 81.5k miles on it, and plan on leasing a car for dead cheap to use as a true DD. As for skills, I'm looking for a car with some issues because I would like to learn, I watched my father did cars when i was younger but I'm no expert. I have access to tools but not welding equipment. I am a fast learner and contain the willingness to learn through trial by error. The 2k cosmetic damage strikes me as the most viable terms of what I'm looking for however it's the quarter vinyl roof that has me nervous because i am aware that replacing or redoing cloth is no easy task. What do you see in it? I worry that the miles are in the X00k's rather than the X0k's due to the cosmetic damage.

Then you want nonrunning with the best body; mechanicals are easy and don't worry about mileage. Most luxury cars never cross 100k and those that do are obvious.

Try to negotiate the $3k one down to $2,500 and you should enjoy it. It also has the most modern features, like 4-wheel disc brakes, and it appears to only need light mechanical repairs. If you're not crazy about the color, it's a good candidate for a repaint, as a tan interior goes with everything.

In it's current state, it's worth somewhere between $3,000.00 and $3,500.00 because it's a Bill Blass designer edition with sunroof, CB, and nearly every option. Were it not for that, it'd be worth $2,000.00 to $2,500.00.

It was an Arkansas car for most of its life; stored under a carport, so, where the pinstriping was got worn away. It looks worse than it is and a good body shop can make her look like new for around $2,000.00.

>>17138361
Depends on the year and condition. Tell me your favorite year/series and I'll give you prices. For example, a '60s convertible brings more than any sedan, but a '60s sedan beats any coupe.

For a first project that you can actually drive, no more than $5k; unless you want one from the '60s. Then, don't expect it to run and drive for less than $5k.

The only problems were with the vacuum system and that the emissions systems on the mid '70s ones would vapor lock. Easily fixed with a different carb. Each car will have its quirks, but, they are some if the finest cars for the money.

Picked this up today

Did an oil change, removed the smog pump belt, it was pretty shit so I should do the rest of the belts as well. It's slightly less gutless now.

Looking up 3.73 8.8 and AOD swap. It's got the 200 I6/C4.

It's mint inside and out, doesn't leak a bit. Needs the carb adjusted (gas in oil, hard warm starts, rough idle).

Well, 25 years of age is technically a collector car in most places. But the general rule here is to post vehicles 25 or older, that are at least somewhat desirable. Doesn't matter if they are American, European, Japanese or Russian, it's all good.

It just happens that most of the people here prefer vehicles older than 1979 and American
>>
>>17139810
Anything other than vapor lock that might cause hard warm starts? I get near instant cold starts if the carb is tuned decently, but hot starts are a struggle.
>>
>>17139876

mine runs rich, unsure if that would cause hot start issues but im unfamiliar with carb behavior

Are you pushing the gas pedal in a quarter of the way while trying to start? Most owner manuals in old cars would always recommend that to start it, when the engine is hot.

Today a 1969 Mercury Meteor Montcalm S33 Convertible Coupe came in the shop today.
118 000 km on it.
It wasn't the prettiest but the owner has been working on it for a bit. Had the 390FE pulled, new gaskets all around and painted. Engine bay cleaned up and painted.
He said he was getting it into a body shop soon and then getting a new top put on. then working on the interior last.
I wish we got more classics in the shop.

Didn't get a picture of it, but this is the car

Been seeing this awesome Lincoln driving around the area I work in for a long time, finally stopped to shoot the shit with him today and ask him about the ride. The guy is in his late 40s, has owned it for decades, and delivers Pizza Hut full time in the thing! What kind of fucking mad man delivers pizza in a 460 big block Lincoln? Honestly I can't help but admire the guy, that's true Lincoln love.

Then he asks me if I wanna buy it, I tell him to name a price, he goes "$2500 cash and it's yours, it has brand new exhaust and runs like a top daily". Almost caved right there, I love Continentals, but it ain't for me, not in a financial position to take on a land barge on top of my Scottsdale and bikes.

If any of you are in the Lower Mainland and are looking for killer land barges, I highly recommend you go check this one out, it's awesome, Walnut Grove area.

Remember that I've put that thing together only recently and that it stood at the exact spot for several days.

You can imagine that the tools wont be all so neat and pretty lined up anymore after the toolbox rode a few klicks under the truck's bench.

Also: If you look closer, you'll see that the box itself aint really tidy but rusty. It was filled with tons of tool-stuff I have twice or thrice. It had the leftovers of a bird's nest too. The only thing I did was turn it over to make the dirt fall out, clean it with the hose, and give it another run with engine block cleaner to remove oil and grease

Then I put some lube to the hinges so they move nice and clean and put the tools inside.

Well... at a second read that really sounds a little autistic even to me....

Nah man, you're good. You're keeping your tools in good condition. And that's not autistic but as workmanlike as can be.

Keeping tools clean, and store them properly is never wrong. If anything it makes sure they will last longer, which saves you money. And they will be ready when you need them most.

trust me I wouldn't sacrifice the integrity of the car just for looks, if it has holes the size of marbles in the quarter then its time for body work

I work at a factory now, i mix up the base mixes for fruit drinks and tea. It's not a bad job, you never work more than 3 days in a row, but my last job was pure ass.

rust should be taken care of when it is first spotted and your should go through the entire car looking for it or your gonna have a swiss cheese car not worth saving
