Took a 4.0L i6 in a first gen Camaro to make 155hp, and even earlier, a 5.8L Packard Eight made 165. It's not that they were garbage, it's a combo of old technology, burgerfats preferring large displacement, understressed engines and the EPA enforcing stricter and stricter emissions regulations without giving manufacturers time to develop anything to make it pass, so they could only lower compression, put in shit cams, restrict the intake with 2 or even one barrel carbs, and mount catalytic converters that barely flowed.

This was also happening at the same time as the oil crisis and labor unrest in Detroit, which also pushed for downsizing in everything for fuel economy. Hard to make any power when you have to worry about emissions and fuel economy, especially when the fatcats up top won't pay for r&d to do anything about it.

Nothing was fast at that time, not even European cars (in the US market.) I know memeing on burger cars is easy, but it's not totally their fault.

Why do you euros always convince yourselves that anything an mericans says is an insult to your "people"

Unless your going to tell me what your communist shitbox is, instead of advertising it in your posts. I don't think I very much care sir. Plus I don't remember warsaw states having to compile with emission standards

the way they did it was focus on the highway around 30 mpg there

they had like 2.73-3.23 gears and over drives

they were still awful to drive though

I dont care
an ancient 1.6 and 1.5 from the 60s makes more hp/l than a 4.9

Most of those were bikes(which can outrun almost any car) and the one car you posted makes around 20-40hp give or take.

Idk what your even trying to get at when most of them would get passed by a 70s station wagon. I feel like I'm just being trolled atm

These engines are still insanely relieable and have a higher specific output than burger engines from back then.
Also the Trabant had a fuel efficiency of 6,9L or 40mpg.

I personally love anything Mercedes and built from the 70's to the very early 2000's.

They literally did nothing wrong other than that one wiring harness problem in the 90's.

So yes. Not saying I don't love older and newer Benzes but IMO that was their golden years.
>>
>>17122349
More like 40s of advancement then came the EPA then it was back to the drawing board.

Why are you using peak hp anyways, you use that to measure electronic motors like a vacuum or a blender

>>17122368
Thats mainly because they were tinier engines built off cast iron. Almost all engines in those time that were not made by ford were reliable
A 1st gen honda civic CVCC did 41mpg and that was a 1.3 compared to the tiny trabant

I agree with you there, when I worked at a mercedes shop the only cars that interested me while working on them were the older models.
Tho I'd say their golden era ended sometime around the 1990s, the new millennium models with their aluminum cam heads and all that just liked to break
>>
>>17122449
lolno

if anything the EPA shouldve made things better

but alas

US carmakers were cheap cunts like always and halfassed shit and didnt put in any effort

and a Trabant engine is based on a goddamn pre WW2 eone
>>
>>17122463
Sure, somewhere in the 90's I'd say it ended, but there were a few models in very early 00's that I thought were OK that's why I included them, but it like peaked in the late 80's. 201, 124, 126 and 129 were the best IMO.

No amercian engineer seem to have wanted to put in the effort in designing an engine around a cat. Instead they just did whatever and just bolted on the cat afterwards and hoped for the best.

And how many post-war german engines were still in use at that time. Most of them were just engines scaled down for automobile use

>>17122489
With an engine as small as the trabant then it makes since why it was so reliable, the smaller the engine the smaller the stress it has to deal
But tbqh I don't even know what we're arguing about anymore

The 201 was probably the peak, but then again all the mercanics always like to shit on the basic 190s since they had different build quality. I was always 50/50 on that
126's are god like but idk about 129, at least with the 500SL. Those always have some kind of issue with them

there were quite a few engines designed with emissions and economy in mind they were just 4 bangers

when it came to V8s they just slapped on some shitty heads lame cam and maybe pistons to drop compression in what they had

so they ended up being slow and horrible on gas

hell Honda modified an Impala and got the same mpg as non-cat cars and much less emissions using CVCC with about the same performance
>>
>>17122700
Everyone knows american 4 bangers were pretty bad, even if it did get good mpg in the 70s it would still at most be 80hp at best.
If anything that just shows you that all mericans cared about were "muh v8". And how determined they were to to keep producing them no matter how shitty they got. And how much most mericans resented the new EPA mandates.

Plus 70 merican cars hit a new pigfat standard so torque was probably more of an issue
