Where in NV? I'm driving from Mammoth CA to Idaho in August and we're taking some backroads. I assume you stick to the interstate right? Northern Nevada looks fucking desolate on street view. Like have you been near Battle Mountain or driven the Lincoln Highway? I read an article that the 50 is so empty you can drive as fast as you want.

I'm a western regional guy and I drive almost all the highways, interstates and state roads here. That picture I shared is in western Nevada by Reno. A lot of it is very desolate, and you won't see much but dirt hills and sage brush. Do you mean Mammoth Lakes on 395? If you're wanting to explore I'd take 6 starting in Bishop to 375 and see Extra Terrestrial Highway, like the town of Rachel and Alamo. Then go up 93 through Ely and those small in between towns. You could get back on 80 and go west to Winnemucca (which would go through Battle Mountain) or stay on 93 northbound through Wells, NV to Twin Falls, ID. Really, the prettiest sights going into Idaho from Nevada is 95. You'll drop right into Boise that way after going on some Idaho State roads from the highway. I have only driven 50 when a part of 95 was shut down and detoured to Fallon. But otherwise, yeah, not much out there.

Pic related, it's 95 in Idaho
>>
>>17107525
>>17107863
Or stay 395 to Carson City and ride Lincoln Highway into Fallon and start the adventuring there. While most of Nevada is bare and boring, there are some sights you won't see anywhere else. Which part of Idaho are you ending up in?
>>
>>17107863
>>17107923
Yes, we are departing mammoth lakes on the 395 and driving into King Hill, ID. Google maps has us taking 395 > 167> 359 > 95 > 361 > 50 > I-80 > 93. That right there is 10 hours. I'm not trying to sightsee, I'm looking for path of least resistance.
>>

its a great idea for local deliveries. but the thing better be 100% fully automated beforehand or the quality of driver would need to skyrocket at those jobs.

They would actually work for a job like mine. But our fleet is already like 15 years old so who the fuck knows if they would actually spend the money.

And fwiw, you fags were the ones who said I was black, not me.

>>17110942
Because I'm Irish and Russian and would be pasty as fuck if I were a NEET like the rest of 4chan. However, I tend to spend time outside in the sun and became a bronze god so when I posted a pic with my hands in it or some shit, everybody started telling me I was black.

>>17110911
Pretty much. I'm waiting to see how many Penske tractors we will have by the end of this summer. Last summer (the busiest time when there are no spare trucks) about 20% of out fleet was Penskes because they refuse to upgrade.
>>
>>17111505
Lel this is also true because most local delivery routes are also part sales. FedEx or UPS would be better for an automated system than something like my job.

If they're auto slack adjusters, never. Check them out every few weeks to see they're still in good position by pulling on them. If they're fucked, gotta get them replaced.

I had a trailer once I had to adjust. It's real easy. But after I adjusted I never checked them. I got a new trailer about two weeks later.
>>
>>17111920
Oh yeah. I forgot... And it's dumb that it's a restriction in the first place. They should do as Germany does and learn a standard transmission to get your license then drive auto later if you prefer. At least you understand how to make one move and stop afterwards.
>>
>>17113201
Industry pressure is against you though. By limiting the amount of people that can drive by requiring manual trans skills you also limit the amount of barely trained monkeys you can enslave.
>>
>>17113201
In IL where I got my CDL, you have to take the test in a manual truck and double clutch. Some states are like that, others will let you test in an auto truck but give you a restriction, and then places like FL let you test in pretty much anything with a trailer. They will let you test in our bay trucks which are automatic with 4x2 tractors, a single axle trailer, and backup cams (they are 46' trailers tho so long for bay trailers). They would let you test in the tiny pup trailers too with a 4x2 auto tractor.

>>17113289
I mean it is switching over and will be like cars too where autos are rare in the US, but I think they should at least have restrictions (for cars and trucks) if they can't into manuél.
>>
>>17113382
Right. In Utah, you just get a restriction. But it does seem like everyone is adapting to auto because of better fuel economy. Plus, it takes 1/4 less skill to operate a tractor-trailer that way. More ragheads to throw in trucks with less training.

>>17113289
I mean, you're not wrong... It's really upsetting to hear of all the "driver shortages" that's a total lie. I totally believe it's all for a way to lower market demand and lowering wages. Half of these mega carriers face racketeering lawsuits almost every year and no one cares. Trucking has turned into something else than what I imagined it would be like in yesteryears.

Also now if you going down into the Keys, right when you get into Key Largo they have a Dept of Agriculture checkpoint because of that screw worm and they are inspecting hard over there. Anybody with a pet in the car coming back North to the mainland is supposed to stop.

Will anyone actually pull me over for running a scale? What do they do?

If they pull you over and you pass inspection and your weight is legal, I think it's just a smallish fine for failing to report to the scales. If you bypass the station and then fail a roadside inspection you're probably fucked.

So what's a PBS vehicle? Is it always a straight truck with a pup trailer or a semi truck with two pup trailers?

And at what configuration do road trains start? Is a B-double already a road train, or does it need two full size semi trailers or a B-triple for a road train?

Put simply, Performance Based Standards are a set of hoops to jump through and and another set of fees to pay so you can use 30 meter long road trains in selected urban areas.

Pic related is a PBS vehicle, notice it actually has Long Vehicle signs on it instead of Road Train. Apparently the bureaucrats thought that joe public would freak out if they saw a road train in an urban environment.

Various sized B-Doubles 19meters, 23meters, 25/26meters, Road trains 32meters, 36.5meters 53.5meters. For most states, Western Australia gives no fucks and has no log book laws and generally length limits are bigger for road trains as long as the axle group weights are correct.

A B-double has a fifth wheel built onto the end of the first trailer (two articulation points, excluding the PBS pseudo b-double), a Road train uses a converter dolly attached to the end of the semi trailer via a ringfeder hitch (three or more articulation points).
>>

It can be any configuration of vehicle for PBS. It allows higher mass limits while ensuring the vehicle will not be a major interference on the road.

Performance Based Standards (PBS) is a national heavy vehicle scheme designed to offer the heavy vehicle industry the potential to achieve higher productivity and safety through innovative and optimised vehicle design.
https://www.nhvr.gov.au/road-access/performance-based-standards/pbs-vehicle-standards

A b-double isnt considered a road train and is mostly allowed on nearly all major road networks and feeder roads that lead to industrial estates while a roadtrain is mainly restricted to rural areas outside a 100km radius of a major city.

Trucks with a semi trailer and a hitch for an unarticulated center axle trailer are also called B-doubles because the resulting cargo volume is similar, but they're far less common.

Theoretically you could line up as many B-double trailers as you wanted behind one another, but realistically only B-doubles and B-triples (two B-double trailers followed by a regular semi trailer) are used. I don't know if it's because of legislative reasons or load distribution reasons or stability reasons (trucks with a lot of articulation points will start to show behavior of an oscillating wave from above which some configurations apparently are more suitable to suppress than others).

Now for road trains. Even though all very long trucks with multiple trailers are called road trains by the general populace, in Australia only long trucks consisting only of semi trailers carry the term road train. These work without any sort of special B-double trailers or anything. You simply hook up a semi trailer to your tractor like you would anywhere else in the world, and then you hook up a one, two or three axle dolly behind it which contains the attachment point for another semi trailer.

Once again these exist as double road trains or triple road trains. Different states and territories in Australia allow different configurations. The emptier ones in the west and north generally allow longer trucks than the more built up states and territories in the southeast.

>>17123914
However, because B-doubles, B-triples and different lengths of road trains aren't confusing enough, carriers started wildly mixing up configurations in states and territories that permit such trucks.

The nomenclature follows roughly the following pattern for unusual combinations: A for a semi trailer, B for a B-double trailer, you just name them from front to back leaving out the last one because it's always a semi trailer, and then you name the overall count.

Therefore A is a B-double. B is a B-triple. C is a double road train. D is an AB-triple. E is a BAB-quad. F is an ABB-quad. G is a triple road train. H is an AAB or 2AB-quad.

K is a special configuration run on private roads by a particular mining company. You will not see it on public roads.

>>17123931
A few American states and Canadian provinces also allow longer combinations. In Canada B-doubles are permitted and in both countries you will sometimes see combinations based on a double road train. In full road train configuration (two long semi trailers) they're called turnpike doubles, and in a configuration with a shorter second trailer, as seen in the photo, they're called Rocky Mountain doubles.

>>17123944
And finally Europe also has its own long combinations. They've been in a thing in Sweden and Finland for many decades, and other countries like the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany have relatively recently permitted them or are currently testing them for road worthiness.

The common configurations in Europe are the B-double, the alternative B-double, the Rocky Mountain double and a configuration using a straight truck (straights truck with short center axle trailers are relatively common to begin with) with a dolly and semi trailer hooked up to it, as pictured.

Sweden is currently testing B-triples for lumber transports.

I'm really going out on a limb here because I'm neither Australian nor a professional trucker, but from my point of view it's either got to do with the specific length limits of particular states and provinces (for example a double road train not reaching the length limit an AB-triple would reach) or the favorable axle groupings, load distributions and road handling of certain combinations over others.

As far as I understand it combinations with B-trailers are very stable and evenly weight distributed, but on the other hand B-trailers can only used as B-trailers, you can't switch around a B-trailer and an A-trailer. If you have a road train on the other hand you can rearrange the A-trailers in any way you like depending on the drops and pickups on your route. Also I imagine road trains are easier to tow out of a bog if you can disconnect the A-trailers with dollies one by one, something that's impossible with B-trailers. Because road trains weigh 60 to 130 tons, and when they're bogged they're fucking bogged. I imagine it's far easier to tow them out bit by bit than all at once.
>>
>>17124343
Another benefit of road trains is that if they're flatbeds (which a lot of them are in the outback so they can transport the greatest variety of cargo) they can run as a train in one direction and then get stacked when empty to make the run back home easier and more fuel efficient. A lot of towns will have a ramp for stacking and unstacking road trains.

Germany recently permitted them up to 24m alongside B-doubles and the straight truck dolly semi trailer combination I posted up to 25.25m, but I'm yet to see them in traffic. Also fewer axles because so far the weight limit for long trucks is still the same as far semi trucks, 40t

O nice, but how do you unload the truck into the dock|?
>>
>>17129212
You leave the trailer there and reverse truck into the dock. It's that simple
>>
>>17129212
Drop the rear trailer in a dock, bring the other one to another dock. Or I think they normally have those little yard trucks too where you just drop the trailer wherever and they deal with it. That's how it is at our manufacturing plant 45min up the road. Never even have to bump docks there, just drop the trailer and they will move it.
>>
>>17129226
I've never seen that someone would leave the trailer to those yard trucks. Usually the driver reverses the trailer to a dock all by himself.
And as you can see, we use swap bodies on the truck. So the driver can just swap the body and the trailer and start driving again.

You can have whatever plate you want of the same year, though, at least in the UK. So that was probably picked up off ebay.

You can have whatever the fuck you want as a custom plate, so long as it's not a forbidden combination or already in use.
Saw a merc with VIDYA a few months back, for example.
>>
>>17131690
Yeah, but the real custom ones in the UK are expensive as shit, hundreds to thousands of pounds.

German custom plates are very restricted in format (district code, one or two letters, one to four digits) but any one of them is something like a 20 bucks single time fee as long as it's not taken.

>>
>>17136794
You push the clutch down, move the lever select the gear you want, then let the clutch back out

(It's a regular-ish 5 speed with an air-shifted 2-speed slapped on the back)
>>
>>17136794
There's a switch on the side of the shift lever that switches between the low gear set (1-4) and the high gear set (5-8), and there's an additional switch on the side of the lever knob that splits the gears into lo and hi, if you need that extra reduction.
>>
>>17136794
It's three transmissions in one; there's the main 5-speed which works like the one in your car (except that it's unsynchronized), and the range and splitter boxes behind.

The range shifter turns gears 1-4 into 5-8 (Lo is only used in low range). You shift normally from Lo to 4, and then flip the range lever to high before shifting to 5, which is the same gear as 1

The splitter then divides each gear into a high and low split. When starting with a very heavy load, you start in Lo-L, split up to Lo-H, then split down while shifting to 1-L, and so on.

From Lo-L to 8-H, you get the 18 speeds.

You just need to give it barely any fuel at all. Like so little its almost pointless. It's easy to get the RPMs way too high on 1-5. Those first gears are just to get the thing rolling. You shouldnt get much higher than 6 or 7 mph.

It's also easier if you can start in 2nd or 3rd because that 2 or 3 less gears to cycle through when starting.
>>
>>17138594
Start in 2nd if you're in a class. You can start in 3rd with an empty trailer, even on some inclines.

For the shift into 3rd and then 4th, literally do not touch the gas pedal, just double clutch shift. If you do that just right, the truck won't heave.

Getting into 5th, and even 6th, you only need to hit like 700RPM, maybe 800-900 depending on the truck.

In the '15 Cascadia at Roehl (10-speed stick), I didn't get above 600RPM until I was shifting from 6th into 7th.
