You'll basically want something with good miles and good fuel economy for your budget, make sure whoever you buy it from lets you test drive or takes you for a ride in it to ensure it feels/works good for your liking.

Most people will disagree with me but most Ford and Toyota smaller cars are pretty good in my experience, Chevy if you don't mind a mid/full sized sedan.

If you're dead set on new car, here are your options that are at least decent:
-Yaris
-Fiesta
-i20/i30
-Corsa/Astra

Unless you buy it as a company car and can get tax return on fuel, avoid diesels. Also avoid getting any unnecessary options. Only stuff you really need is this:
-electric windows
-a/c
-Webasto
-heated seats (since Iceland being, well, icy)

Shit box is the way to go kid. Pay full in cash shop you don't get fucked with comp and collision insurance. Get a secured credit card for gas and pay it in full each month. Now when you do need a loan your rate will suck less.
