The ZRX is already a factory resto mod (if that makes sense).

Fun fact, or maybe not depending on how you're feeling today.

The bike on the lift right now is a HD flsts that the owner rode into the side of a truck at speed. The thing was basically a complete loss.

The guy can't ride anymore, but pulled out 16K in literal cash and said "rebuild it" when we picked it up.

So, it's been rebuilt, 16,000 Canadian pesos to rebuild a 15,000 bike.

I know what the fuck a bobber is, why in the fuck are you trying to explain shit like that to me?

No, accessorizing/customizing are not similar things. That's a line of thinking brought to you by the MoCo and the "factory custom" nonsense.

Replacing shit on a sporty with crap from the MoCo catalog, Posh factory, lowbrow, dimecity, biltwell, etc isn't custom. Custom is turning your own footpegs on a lathe.. custom is building frames from scratch.

Adhering to the built not bought and it's not custom if you bought it mentality will help you avoid making this mistake in the future.

Yes, it's red clearcoat on a $25 engine.

Been riding for about 3 years
My wheelie skills are seriously lacking. I never bothered on my old bike (cbr250)
I bought a liter sports bike a few months ago and it wheelies under power and I can handle shifting gears and it keeps climbing but it ends up at a ludicrous speed. I've been playing with clutch wheelies but it either comes up super high or it bogs down after popping up, how would you go about learning the wheelie zone on this bike? Rear brake drops it super quick but it needs barely any extra throttle to either lose the wheelie or it almost flips (been told it comes to about 11 measuring at bottom of the tires)

Ride that motherfucker and put some serious miles on it so you learn motorcycling. Do not be distracted by style but do study first.

Never make your only motorcycle your first project unless you are already a mechanic since that means downtime.

Go to Chop Cult and xlforum. Read and learn.

First thing to do is buy a FACTORY service manual and parts catalog or download them. Haynes, Clymer and Chilton are for mopping up oil spills.

https://www.carlsalter.com/harley-service-manuals.asp

have free downloads.

Here's you:

https://www.carlsalter.com/pdfs/Harley%20Davidson-1998%20Service%20Manual.pdf

Check Ebay for the factory parts catalog or buy new if not available, but someone in xlforum likely has a download link.

Your year is easy to work on. Don't fall for memes like carb replacement but rejetting to get rid of EPA lean settings is a good idea.

The stock exhaust with the crossover breathes very well if you uncork the mufflers by pressing out the baffles. I use a hydraulic press and a rod from the end where the muffler clamps to the header pipe, and protect the rear end of the exhaust with a 2x4 or similar. You can buy slip-ons instead but I don't see the point. Drag pipes and very short pipes are shit for tuning. Avoid.

>>
>>17098765

So guys when do you think the nannystate safetycrats will ban motorcycles in one form or another?

It seems like a bizzare oversight on the part of soccermoms and liberals that it hasn't been done already.

Which country or state is the mostly likely to capitulate and legislate motorcycles off public roads first? Or make it so expensive and impractical (strict semi annual inspections, atgatt enforced by law) that they kill it?
>>
>>17098840
Nannystaye bullshit has already reached an intense level of fuckery in yurop and many other places. I would imagine that capitulation/legislation that ruins motorcycling would occur in those sorts of areas first.

Not him but >>17098263 is correct and that's how the bobber, cafe and chopper (in their correct, original meaning dating to when motorcyclists spoke English) scenes were born.

Aftermarket parts are useful, may be combined with pure custom work and often are.

For those interested in a higher than typical level of independence I recommend buying tools before toys because tools make toys but toys don't make tools. Learn to wrench, then pick up some machining and fab skills. They go with everything not just bikes.

How do I make girls horny with my motorcycle?
>>
>>17098840
Some part of canada has retarded insurance prices for motorcycles to the point where it's obviously a scam.

Europe has nanny licensing restrictions and costs that make it practically impossible for a young person to buy a sport bike.
>>
>>17098942
By doing drive-bys with a water gun.
>>
>>17098942
>>17098949
Oh wait, horny, not wet. My bad.
You're shit out of luck.
>>
>>17098935
I've never touched it. Rode a R1150 with 185k km, that system was never worked on because it never failed.
My own bike has that system, is at 135k and also never touched it.

America has squids killing themselves and being a nuisance to public traffic and residents, and the costs of its motoring centric society are unsustainable and only seem cheap because they're been postponed for decades.
>>
>>17098572
I wouldn't switch bikes just yet. Ride the fucker first. Some riders are triggered by vibration and others are not. Instead of thrashing between bikes looking for some grail, fucking ride the damn bike you own. Solid mount Sporties are considerably lighter then rubbermount versions so there's that.

If you decide you want rubber mounts I'd get a Dyna or FXR. I have an FXR and FXLR (FXR for midgets, it now has proper FXR forks with dual discs), the FXR since 1988 when I bought it new. It has well over 100K miles despite my owning other bikes.

Put several thousand miles on it at least and get familiar with the machine. You already own it. Many big twin owners keep a Sportster for around town.
>>
>>17098942
You'll only make old men hard.
>>
>>17098956
Whether or not it's reliable is not the point. The point is that I want to think of it as being simple.
>>
>>17098972
It's simple. And you can literally just remove it and the bike won't even notice. Just don't idle for more than 5 minutes.
>>

>>

They laugh and think you're joking, then you mention you're packing a spare helmet and they get horny.

>Harley Davidson knuckehead.
>Harley Davidson Evolution.

When you knoweth not, speaketh not.

Knucks ceased production in 1947. They came with brass Linkert carbs. EFI didn't exist then and no bikes came with FI of any sort.

Evos are durable powerplants but except for a short run with Marelli EFI (best discarded for a carb when it dies) were carbureted. Carbs are no drawback on Harleys because the single carb is so convenient to service. Later Harleys with Delphi EFI work fine but of course EFI is far more expensive to tune than a carb.

>America has squids killing themselves and being a nuisance to public traffic and residents

>the costs of its motoring centric society are unsustainable and only seem cheap because they're been postponed for decades.
The cost of driving everywhere isn't that much. It would be much more expensive to send an entire train out to every rural corner of the country to pick up people and take them into town every day.

What's it like to ride a big machine, like an XJR1300?

Is it a death trap on 2 wheels or is it quite safe?

I'm scared I will kill myself because I ride a 125 and I have to twist the throttle all the way to actually move anywhere, whereas I know that on a big bike you need to be extremely sensitive and careful when twisting the throttle.
>>
>>17098996
We're not talking about the countryside here. North America is unique in being hellbent on designing its -cities- to accommodate motoring as much as possible, and it's created an absolute fucking mountain of resource usage which - ecological arguments all aside - is simply too expensive to afford in the long run. Unless the US wanna wage war on the world to maintain the value of the dollar so you can live in exponentially increasing debt forever they will be forced to downsize every aspect of their lifestyle in the coming decades. Of course they won't realize this until it's too late because right now they're still upsizing.

>>

Get them on the back, sit at medium revs and make your bike vibrate, that or go at a speed that causes the same thing. Must be the adrenaline mixed with vibrations but it seems to do the trick. Done it several times, works like a charm.

Now this is shitposting.
The US accomodates automobiles because we have the space for it. Most people don't live in inner cities. We have to use cars to get from our suburbs or rural homes into the city.
>>
>>17099028

Probably not the best thing to go to from a 125 because the weight and power difference will be quite profound. If you want to move towards that kinda bike though, maybe look at a Bandit 600 or something similar.

>costs of its motoring centric society are unsustainable

Asserted conclusion much? Energy is cheap and will remain so. Casualty rates are trivial compared to past rates. Vehicles are affordable. Suspensions easily adapt to worn roads and the important roads will be repaired sooner or later.

I defy you to find anything "unsustainable" about modern motor transport.

I'm a railfan but rail isn't suitable for most of US geography. Suburban light rail coupled with passenger service on sustainable routes already exists and could be removed, but it's not a form and fit replacement for independent small vehicles.

Well, let's see. How about a two trillion dollar gap on infrastructure maintenance? And a trillion dollars in car loans? That's $9,375 per capita that should've been spent on cars and infrastructure but hasn't. And half the population can't afford a $500 emergency expense because they're neck deep in balancing out monthly payments with their income. You think these are just non-issues?

>>
>>17099119
>debt
>no emergency funds
These are issues of people living their lives trying to defend their credit score and impress strangers with new things, not issues of transportation systems.
>>
>>17099138
Apart from the two trillion dollars spending deficit in your transportation systems that I literally just mentioned.
>>
>>17099025
Wasn't on purpose, I was hanging off.
>>
>>17099119
Car loans are typically a voluntary choice as is buying way more vehicle than the customer can afford. (I worked at a used car lot. Customers are usually fashion driven mongoloids.) No one holds a gun to customers demanding they buy an SUV they can't afford or afford to feed. In contrast economy cars only sell well when times are hard. They aren't hard today except in select hellholes.

Ten grand per capita isn't shit spread over time. It's not an impressive number and the US moves enough money to divert a few trillion over time with little impact IRL.

I've lived on small money and done well because I refuse to piss it away. The problem is stupidity, not the transport scheme. People who refuse to learn useful things but can recite football history or sperg in detail about Game of Thrones are the problem. That was their deliberate choice.

Infrastructure underinvestment isn't an affordability issue, it's an issue caused by the public resentment of paying for what they use. (Some of that resentment is legit. SC wastes so much money that I'll take shitty roads over high gas taxes and shitty roads.) Life has tradeoffs. I'll take low fuel prices which in inflation-corrected dollars are dirt cheap where I live. http://www.gasbuddy.com/GasPriceMap?z=4

Short version, the public won't pay for anything they don't perceive they must. They support DoD budgets which get them little return but block infrastructure spending. THAT is the main issue, it's a voluntary choice by adults, and that for better or worse is their problem. Tough shit, cry me a river.

Public conception of thrift has changed drastically over time. The "greatest generation" folks who grew up at the tail end of the Depression would have laughed at three or five year auto loans. Today many buyers are "nigger rich" (no matter what their race) and confuse debt with wealth. I don't and everything I own is fucking paid for, houses included.

You are right but motorcycles don't depreciate like cars do. A bike with 2000miles is like 10% less than retail and craigslist is full of 20 year old bikes going for $2000.

Honda made fine motorcycles for many years. You may find useful info on vintage Honda forums.

https://vjmc.org/ are growing steadily and their area at Barber Vintage gets more interesting every year. Barber has the largest motorcycle museum in the Americas and possibly the world. Tent camping is excellent and the swap meet and variety of motorcycles in the parking areas are as interesting as the museum. Every American biker should visit at least once. Plan to spend a day on the museum alone.

Though it's called the Vintage festival everyfuckingthing is represented. I prefer it to Daytona.

I do. I pack light enough that everything fits into a waterproof duffle then I strap it to the back. The tent is a shitty 3 man but it folds up nice.

Pack like you are backpacking. Its the best of car camping and backpacking. Only compromise is you need to bring tools and shit for your bike. You can reach remote sites like backpacking but don't actually have to carry everything.

I don't know but I think about this a lot. It's insane that cars need 10000 safety standards and no seatbelt is illegal but sitting on a rolling engine is fine.

I think it will start when automated driving becomes big and people try to ban actual driving for "safety". At which point I will go plateless leaderpeder

My mirrors vibrate so bad at speed they are almost useless so I have to headcheck anyways.

Same.

I hope exogenous shifts in risk preference or a decline in the relative cost of first-world land and resources (to first-world citizens, natch) caused by stricter border control or some other thing I don't even know what can pull our chestnuts out of the fire here, but otherwise:

I didn't do 120 before having to lift off because there wasn't a car stuck on the side of the road, so I didn't wonder if there were any police or recovery vehicles nearby. I also can't confirm that the wheelie control works very well.

Hypothetically nice. I would like a proper sport bike one day. For now I must live with the speed of my DL-1000.

Make sure to not try and get a good speed going where you don`t know the status of the police on the road.

I've been looking into one of these or an RSV4, the RSV4 takes sound and looks but this bike has made things very interesting.
>>
>>17100048

You can buy a full set of fairings for about ÂŁ500 and have whatever colour you want. I love the fire blue too, that's my colour of choice, but the red and white is quick nice too, especially in person. Motografix pads look great on the white and red too.
>>
>>17100049
i have a friend that worked at a dealership.

he said for some reason the base model RSV4 would have come back all the time cause of electrical problems. get one of the higher end versions if you can.
>>
>>17100063

Yeah I've been looking at the 2010-2014 Factory. Reviews and owner reviews seem okay, my only problem is that the nearest Aprilia dealer is about 60 miles away, so if ever it needs any major servicing I'll probably just pay to have it shipped to the dealer. Any work I can do though I will, but I can't do much if electrical problems appear.

I took both wheels off my baiku after owning it for 2 weeks, replaced all the brake pads, brake lines, chain, etc. Before that I had zero experience. Just follow the manual and take pictures and when you go out to ride start slow and work up. Anything that will fuck up will quickly

To be fair provided it's not a road where they can really stretch their legs with few straights, I don't hold them up, but as soon as things open up it's no fun for either of us.

I'm sick of being stuck on this CBR500 because I've absolutely hit the limit in every respect on it now, I'm out of speed, out of tyre and lean angle and just generally beyond it.

Oh well, only 4 and a bit months to go before I can upgrade.

The CB500F is very good, I've now ridden all 3 bikes on the 500 range and the F is by far the best. The X is good too, don't get the R, it's too expensive and isn't as fun as the other two. If you want something more engaging to ride, the new BMW G310R is looking promising.

furthermore, the more you ride on the track, the more you realize how incredibly, retardedly dangerous street riding is in general. if you could ride on the track basically whenever you felt like it, you would most likely lose a lot of the passion for street riding, and become far more aware of its disadvantages compared to cars.

Riding a bicycle on the road is quite a bit more dangerous than driving a car and they're sure as fuck not banning that. In terms of raw deaths as many people get killed walking as riding motorcycles.

Car safety standards are what they are just because they want to force the manufacturers to actually put the technology that exists on them instead of jewing everyone with vehicles are that they know are less safe than they could be. The equivalent of that is the mandatory ABS that's being legislated on bikes and maybe some day air bags will be affordable enough to become mandatory, although good luck managing that one in the US where people refuse to wear a fucking helmet.
