Yes, I have a 01 MR-S and it kicks ass. Right out of the box, it's faster than a 1.8 Miata, and you can cheaply upgrade to a 2zz to make it even faster.

Just make sure you thoroughly research the pre-cats issue. Google it if you don't know what I'm talking about. Do not think about buying the car unless the owner allows you to remove the O2 sensors to inspect the pre-cats.

Plan to install an aftermarket exhaust header soon after purchasing the car. You can do it yourself and it takes about an hour.

You can also remove the factory header, get out a hammer and a big screw driver, gut the catalytic converter material, and then re-install it.

When driving check the oil burning by revving when cold. If big clouds come out you got potential trouble.

Try and get one with hard top. If you don't want it you can sell it for around 2k in states.

>>
>>17099175
Less than that.
The key thing is make sure the headgasket has been replaced and torqued to 80ft lbs. If not it WILL blow up on you 100 percent. Rust is obvious. Check intake hoses and cam position sensor wiring. If it's pre 89, the trim has a metal backing and will often cause substantial rust behind it. Targa tops are nice but they're heavy and make the car a wet noodle stiffness wise. You can literally feel the two halves of the car move independently when you drive. Fine for enjoying the weather, not fine for sporting. Leather interior is also very heavy of course. Post 89 cars already have the right setup for a 1jz swap if you want to go that route. These things are basically Japanese muscle cars. They're heavy and don't handle that well, but not do they sound and look cool. Plus they eat up highway miles like no other.

Hey, do any of you Toyota fans know much about the JDM Soarer? I'm looking at importing an RHD Soarer, the Z20 series (generation before the SC 300/400).

I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about how reliable these cars are, if they're fun to drive, if they'd be able to drift, if they're any quick, or reliable.

10k could probably do you a lot of that what you're set on doing. I bet you could get a good turbo supra for 4-5. And then swap the motor to a 1j for about 4. If you wanted you could get a slightly rougher one for a little cheaper and just cut out the fenders and put on the shine auto widebody kit. Browse your local craigslist/Kijiji for some 9-10 I'm wide rims or spacers and you'd have a sweet car. 40 bucks for the weir performance diff upgrade kit. And you can slide it around do burnouts, cruise, whatever.
If you can't tell I have big dreams for my shitbox. Scored quints on her yesterday.

Got any ideas on how to finish it at the back? The trailing edge of the spoiler is rounded, so it would be odd to have a sharp edge where the black stops. I could continue black along the same width to the underside of the spoiler? That might look weird as well though. A third option is to paint the entire underside of the spoiler (not that much desu) black and only leave the outer edges on the top silver.

This is all I was able to find

>It shared its platform and the same the 24 Valve Inline-6 Twin Turbo engine with the MKIII Toyota Supra and it had many other features that were technologically groundbreaking for its time.

It only shared the engine in some "3.0" (as in 3 litre) trim levels, though. Wikipedia indicates that these Soarers used the 1G-Gte, with the very best trims using the 7M-Gte (I have checked Japanese auction house websites. Hundreds of 1G equipped cars, not a single 7M, though.)

I'm leaning against buying one now, due to how hard it would be to find parts here. I would like to import a Mk3 but there's no telling if the head gasket is about to blow. Doubt many of the Japanese were getting their heads retorqued.
>>
>>17102444

>>
>>17103910

Never mind, a quick google shows that they did make a 1JZ version, it was just jap land exclusive.

Why should someone importing a supra consider the 1JZ over a 7M - GTE model?
>>
>>17105619
More reliable, makes more power stock. Reliability is the main factor. I used to think the 7m was better because no replacement for displacement, but worrying about mine is hurting my health. If you're going to go through the trouble of importing a supra. Might as well get the "better" one. That way you don't have to worry about it. You can just buy an eBay manifold and turbo, turn up the boost and enjoy 400hp

>>
>>17106664
What's the purpose of putting on an aftermarket turbo if they come twin turbo'd from the factory? Sorry for the low level questions, I'm relatively new to cars as a hobby
>>
>>17104988
Wat
>>
>>17107192
Twin turbos are actually inefficient at making power. Too complicated, too heavy, too small. A single bigger turbo will make more power at less psi but will often introduce lag which is the time period where you're waiting for the turbo to kick in and deliver power. And no problem dude, everybody has to learn somehow.
Anyway, a single turbo is better for peak power, and modern expensive turbos spool stupid fast anyway and have practically no lag. Twin turbos are outdated and silly.
>>
>>17107973
Sequential twin turbos are inefficient at making power. Parallel twin turbos (or tri- or quad- like in the new Bugattis and that new BMW) are a whole other story.
>>
>>17108015
True, but for a tuner car. A single turbo is also just easier to deal with then getting two to play nice generally. Or so I've been told. 7m's are single turbo and my last car was supercharged.
>>
>>17108029
I wanna see a car with one turbo for each cylinder.
Take a standard 4-pot. Put a snail on each exhaust port, pressurizing air into four separate intake papes, one for each intake port <3 <3 <3
>>
>>17108042
*pipes, sorry
>>
>>17108042
That sounds like an incredible waste of energy and resources, but also really, really sexy. Do want.
>>
>>17108152
You'll blow up your engine in no time, due to unequalized boost per cylinder, unless you are extremely careful setting it up. Also, any leak in one cylinder will probably fuck your crank. Other than that have fun.
>>
>>17107973
Makes sense, thanks. Better to just have 1 big turbine than small ones trying to work in tandem.

>>17105843
So the 7M-GTE still has issues even if the headgasket is retorqued? What if you use ARP studs when retorquing it (I'm talking out of my ass here, this is just stuff I've googled)

>>

Well here's the thing. 7ms are old. They could have problems they could not. They could be perfect or they could have a slightly warped head blow headgasket constantly no matter what you do. I blew my headgasket twice in one month and now have ARP headstuds but I still constantly worry it's going to go again. The only way to really make sure is to remove the entire motor and have a machine shop machine the thing down to a mirror finish, than put a metal headgasket on it. Which at that cost you may as well just get a 1j. If you're okay with the possibility of doing the headgasket more than once or you just think you won't be stressed like I am, than go for it. I love my car but going above 120mph just makes me uneasy now.

YouTube, /o/, and other online auto forums can teach you a lot but be careful about buying a 30 year old car since you have no one around who can personally help you. Personally, I'd look for Toyotas from the mid-late 90s for a starter car since you're on your own.

I think the first car is sweet (jealous that I don't live in a warm state) and being only $1500 is gr8. You're gonna have to be a bit creative since you're not gonna be able to drive it home confidently. Maybe try something like asking the seller if he'll meet you in a parking lot (not in a remote area, don't be stupid) so once you buy it you can practice a bit before driving home. That's all I can think of though, sorry :^/

1990, EE90 Corolla
>>
>>17112849
Well, this isn't that fast of a thread so I will unload all the question, somebody will hopefully notice, and answer them.

1. >The engine mounts. Would they be the same? I figured since I chose engine from the same series (E series), it would be interchangeable with the current engine (which is just a carburetted 2E engine).
2. >Exhaust.
>am afraid that since the exhaust is made for the 2E engine, it will not be able to handle the turbo and it will overboost all the time.
need to know who am I to contact about making me a custom muffler.
3.>Engine wiring harness.
Seeing from the costs of these things, I will have to give it a shot myself. I will have a partial engine wiring harness from Starlet, and the rest will be made by myself.
>am new to this kind of work, but have years of DIY behind me.
>Is it a job that must be left to a professional or I can work it all out over time?
4.>Transmission.
>suspect the current one won't do at all.
What should I do? Swap the one from the Starlet? I am afraid it won't be quite the same thing. Also, since its a turbo I'd need 220mm+ flywheel.
5. >Bellhousing. I suspect It'd would need machining , right? Also what do I do about adapter plate?

Anything else that comes to mind that might be a problem, feel free to throw on heap of my to-do list.

So /tg/ I'm shopping on CL for a basic dd in the Tucson area for my friend from college. She had a BMW and can't afford the payments/maintenance on it anymore, asked me if I can help her look for a "cheap car that won't break down for 2 years and gets ok gas mileage". Seems simple enough but I'm a fucking retard and would rather be safe than sorry.
That aside, I found an 03 Echo online for 1800 with 70000 miles on it (according to the ad). I have no experience or knowledge about this car whatsoever, KBB seems to love them. Any experiences or tips on this? The miles on it are a red flag to me, seems a bit low for the year which tells me someone might he fucked with it, I'd say the price is low too but I wouldn't know about this car.
If all else fails I'll just find a decent civic/accord or corrola/camry for her.
Keep in mind it has to be bulletproof, she knows jack all about cars
>>
>>17115069
>>
>>17115085

See if it has maintenance records. At that age, the water pump could be leaking if it's never been done, but otherwise it takes a completely inept retard to kill an Echo. It might be a little slow, but it's one of those cars that you can get by doing just oil changes on if someone can't into regular maintenance.

>>
>>17120732
turbo is still pretty slow in a straight line stock. unless you're racing N/A is good (beams is great.) If you are racing than zzw30 is best, it has the same straight line stats as sw20 Turbo, but is cheaper, more reliable (sans PreCats) and less rust vulnerable.

I have a turbo, but thats because i jerk off to turbo noise and blow off valves

2zz can be a intoxicating engine but it fell in limelight of the K20/K24 so hard there aren't that many good affordable performance parts if you are going all out. One could make a serious case for 2zz on stuff like a MR-S where it will basically just slot in (+preconfigured wiring harness, iirc $800) but its worthwhile to remember if you are sticking with stock cam profiles the 2ZZ has overtly peaky setup which doesn't really grant any extra power and means its kinda gutless at low revs for a 1.8. If you fine with *just* 160 to 200whp (street modified) 2ZZ has somewhat of a case, i drove one hard and it made it to 387k miles before it blew, but if your car comes with a 4AG just go 7AG, and vice versa 1zz to 2zz.

If you want crazy power that is lightweight and relatively affordable for what it is then its either turbos or brand-swaps and the whole K20/K24, LS, or even 13b memes start flying around. That is the one sucky thing imo about being a Toyota fanboy, there are no larger displacement screamers that break into the 300hp, heck even 250hp catagory without requiring huge HUGE investment, if not even R&D on ones own time.

The upside is most Toyota people aren't such brand loyalists they fall for all the memes unironically, so stuff like this can be appreciated better in the subculture https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jkGuUWqho4

>>17133128
Looks alright

>>17133429

>>
>>17133767
i meant $800 for the wiring harness not the engine, and i might be confusing it with blacktops 4AGE conversions for AW11s, just heads up. If you get into 1zz or 2zz the Monkey Wrench Racing guys are easy to talk to and are one of the few still trying to get power out of it in North America

I wish the 3SGE Beams engine was either more common, lighter, or could be punched out to near or above the 2.5 liter mark but as much as Yamaha's influence on the cylinder heads makes me love the sound of Toyotas i'm not going to pretend the K20 series is king right now...happily in full race trim those *can* sound good assuming the owner isn't a massive ricer and ruins it with a massively oversized exhaust

~sigh~

it pissed out all my water from the hose that goes from the heater core to the block. Hole was right there by the block under the distributor. It doesn't look as bubbly now but the weather has been shit today so I won't be able to use a block tester on it until later this week. Stayed very cool and I did a wet burnout in second gear all the way up to the top of a bridge. Hung up and 6k RPM and stayed there all the way up. kek

I don't know if the hole was there last night when I did that video but it was definitely there when I parked it that night. Didn't notice any puddles because it was raining bad and washed it all away.

/tg/ how do I make my parents see reason
>Graduate
>Need to get a car to get a job
>Don't want to spend a lot, just want a decently depenable car
>Parents willing to offer up to 3000 but then I have to pay back 3000 + insurance
>Still don't have a job
>Keep showing me soulless '04-'06 pieces of shit (perfectly fine cars) for 2k-3k
>continue to do everything in their power from letting me get a shitbox because to them age denotes reliability (which I doubt somewhat)
I know I'm autistic but I've always felt attached to shitty 90's cars and have watched them slowly fade from the streets. I found a '97 tercel and can find absolutely no holes in this
>1k, clean, passed inspection, 153000 miles
Am I right to think this is more dependable than a 2000's mazda3/accord/etc? airbags, abs, it's got it, and isn't insurance generally cheaper on older cars? I'm trying to raise the money myself because I don't want to leech, but uh, no fucking job, so...
so I guess I'm just asking if dependability is a valid argument against a newer car, their maintenance should be cheaper, yea? anything you can think of to keep me out of a fucking soulless civic, please.

If you can't afford the car in the first place and you're worried about paying your PARENTS back a 3k loan, you can't afford the repairs a 90's shitbox will guaranteed require. Don't kid yourself.
If you're going from highschool to college, just get a pristine 00's econobox so you can focus on your studies.
If you're moving from highschool to workforce, get a pristine econobox so you can get your shit together and advance professionally without having to call out of work all the time because your rattle trap broke down.
If you're moving from college to workforce, you are a fucking lost cause for asking this question and needing a loan from your parents at this stage of life, and nothing we say will help you.

Send me the link to the ad, a 97 terc will have the very reliable 5efe dis-less engine which gets about 37 mpg. Upkeep should be very simple but make sure you're using your car to find work. I would say if you like tercels send me your area and I can find one at a good price but work first then get your car or else it will create drama at home.

I bought a 95 Corolla from a friend of mine for $140.

It's... surprisingly decent. Better than I expected.

However, it doesn't pass smog here in CA. High NOx. It's a 1.8L so it has EGR. I was gonna try cleaning out the EGR and seafoaming it.

Any thoughts?
>>
>>17148107
Def clean the egr out, don't forget to check the egr passages too, those are often clogged up.
Fuck sea foam, it's a waste of money.
>>
>>17148115

I have a can of the stuff in my garage from a while ago anyway, figure it can't hurt anyway

Worst case scenario I can also pick up a new cat for like $100ish.
>>
>>17148128
Don't quote me on this but I'm almost positive that a cat has nothing to do with NOx emissions, it only handles hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.
>>
>>17148134

Cats do help with NOx, both in my professional and personal experience. However, stuff like EGR and proper cooling has a lot more of an effect.

ultimately I'm just trying to fix this thing up quick and sell it to fund another project.
