Are the DeLorean/Trueno actually good, or are they just memes?
No/Yes, Yes
No
Kind of
Yes
DeLorean is terrible in every way except aesthetics. AE86 is a nimble, rwd coupe with a good engine for the time but the meme tax has made it cost much much more than its worth
The DeLorean is for enjoying as a neat piece of machinery and the pinnacle of 80s aesthetics, the Trueno is for hitting those twisties.

>for the time
Not even for the time, It was a economy car. You watched too much initial D and instead of understanding the serious was about plot armor and "skill" you came out with the idea that the 86 was actually good.

The 86 is decent for it's class, but I prefer the 200sx/s12 Silvia. CA too good.
Compared to modern alternatives for the money they're both trash.
They just have muh history/aesthetic/memes going for them which commands a high price as they get more rare.

That Trueno meme tax is fucking ridiculous.
I saw one in Germany with 190k km on the odo on sale for €15,000.
The Delorean's biggest flaw was giving a European mutt engine that was barely able to move the car instead of the proposed v8 from I think Camaro. That's why 88MPH was a focal point in the BTTF movies, it was barely able to hit 80MPH in the first place.

Except that it did good in the applicable racing series at the time. The tuners from way back when still offer their N2/Formula Atlantic tuned 4AGEs, see Hasselgren for instance.
They were the 80s Escort Mk1, which has also turned into unobtainium.
