So I found this 3800-4200 stall torque converter that runs for $240 from a place called KMJ Performance. Looked around and saw a lot of 3500-3800 torque converters in the $220-$250 range

Hopefully its not a piece of shit, but even if it is, it'll be better than the stocker I have now

Dou you have magnetic pickups, it's not extremely likely but they could be faulty and the resistance could be too high or low when it's Cold... Might be a place to start

Avoid buying something without checking the frame, floors, and other hidden or critical areas for rust. Do your research, find common issues for the drivetrain and car overall, and make sure you can get parts for it in your area.

That sound like it should be ok..... Have you tested for vacuum leaks? Sometimes the leaks stop after the engine thermally expands and can close those gaps. While it's running you can use carb cleaner around any intake mating surface, and if the quality of the idle or misfire changes it could be a vacuum leak

>>
>>17083515
Nigga the High compression ones are 335hp+. What are you doing with it?
>>
Hey dudes, I need your help.

I got a new radiator today, and with it came an electric fan. I did the entire replacement and in the end decided to take the mechanical fan that was being spun by the engine, off of the car.

After doing so I didn't touch the carb, non of my spark plugs got removed and the distributor cap is sitting exactly like it was before I started everything. But it idles really rough and does some occasional small bangs out of the exhaust when the car is on (idling and driving).

Is it possible that by taking the mechanical fan off I upset the timing? And if so, would I advance it or retard it to fix these issues?
>>
>>17083534
That sounds odd. Maybe taking off that extra load from the engine requires some adjustments to smooth it out again
>>
>>17083533
Far from pretty '59 oldsmobile super 88. Keeping the rustic look but building up drivetrain
>>
>>17083540
Thats exactly what I was thinking, dude.

It isn't exactly a large engine either, just a 4.1 L, and I'd imagine it's already tired.
>>
>>17083548
4.1? What engine?
>>
>>17083558
It's a Falcon 6, 250 CI engine.
It's the original engine the car came with (1972 Maverick), but I wasn't having issues with anything until I did the fan / radiator swap.
>>
>>17083544
394s are great. The 1959s should have 315hp. Although your intake options are kind of limited if you want to hop it up. You basically only can find dual quads. What's the casting number on the heads?
>>
>>17083585
Not sure casting numbers. Just got the car home. Plan of action was guttimg the interior, full clean and addressing the rotten passenger floor pan and then piling the motor and giving it a refresh and cleaning up engine bay

Check on the center exhaust port when you have a chance. The heads should have a 18 cast into them. And if there is a pad with a stamped number it should read DXXXXXX

>>17083567
Reset your idle mixture. It sounds like it's running rich.

Do the 2-1/2 turns trick, then adjust your throttle screw so the engine barely stays running. Should be about 350-400 RPM.

Fiddle with the idle mix screw(s) until you find the 'peak' RPM and set it slightly on the rich side of the peak.

There you go, perfectly adjusted idle mix.

460 or 390, The f250 I'm fixing up and taking from this guy in town has both, the 390 is currently in the truck and the 460 he has laying around. I'd have to take out the 390 to rebuild anyways.

>>17086867
I had those worries too at first because my first rebuilt engine spun a bearing about a year later. Don't sweat it man, Bearings can surprisingly take alot of abuse as long as they were measured and fit properly in the first place. a microscopic piece of grit won't hurt your motor and will be washed out after a few minutes of running and be caught by your oil filter.

if you look close you can see a few pieces of lint littering the bottom end. Didn't hurt a god damn thing, I doubt a piece of dirt small enough to miss by a close inspection will hurt literally anything.

Not much at all, I put in a 265DEH comp cam kit, tmeyer pistons to bump the compression up to around 9.5:1, an edelbrock 4 barrel intake and a new matched crank kit. It's still running on the stock smog heads, but also features a single ported and polished exhaust port before i said fuck it and gave up.

It's enough to get the galaxie up to 60 in 7.75-8 seconds, which I don't think is too bad considering I just recently was under the car and finally saw the tag on the 9"... It's got highway gears; 2.75:1.

I threw a u joint on the highway about a month ago so that gave me enough of a reason to park it and fix all the other stuff wrong with it. Like the lack of overkill exhaust. I just got the 3" exhaust piping and mufflers in the mail about a week ago. Also new brakes, interior, new paint job, etc
>>
>>17088618

Decent.
My pics are on a different card I can't be assed to locate.
D7 block, bored .050 over, T Meyer pistons, stock crank and rods, aussie heads pnp, scorpion roller rockers, 268DEH comp cam, hyd lifters, cloyes double roller straight up timing, edelbrock intake, 650 carb, MSD billet mechanical dist with 6AL, Doug's shorty headers through 40 series flowmasters

C6 with I think the same 2.75 gear... in a 79 Lincoln, moved the earth, 4:11 traclok was next to go in until an unfortunate event happened...now I'm just sitting on my motor.
>>
>>17088698
I tried full size headers, the bastards almost fit except they rubbed the tie rods. The motor would lift a couple of inches in the rear every time I turned the wheels. I also ordered one of those summit header kits. For the past year I've been running the stock manifolds. Can't wait to hear how a 3" exhaust system sounds through these summit 2 chambers.

What unfortunate event exactly happened?
>>
>>17088826

Burned in a fire.
I was running 2-1/2" through. Sounded perfect.
Headers I had to notch the crossmember on the passenger side for it to fit.
Strange how there is nothing on the passenger side, drivers has steering box, brakes, etc and the driver header worked, passenger didn't.
So much torque it actually broke the drivers side engine mount, stock, I ended up welding the two pieces together.

Slowly piecing my old barrel of ass together. Got a 1965 Ford Custom 500 sedan, this thing was the absolute bottom of the bargain bin when it was built.
240/6 with a 3spd and overdrive unit, no A/C, no power brakes, power steering, no radio. The original 240 shit the bed back in 1972 and it had it's engine removed and it was parked back then in a shed, shed fell on it back in 2003 when I got a hold of it and it's been in the back of my mind ever since then.

Right now on the hunt for an engine an transmission, it's a Galaxie body so damn near anything under the sun can fit but it has no provision for power steering. Any suggestions?
>>
>>17089029

Engine bay was all that survived. Building burned, not my car. All the plastic melted, lights, trims... almost picked up a no motor 69 mach 1 a couple months ago, that would've been its new home.
Not sure what else I would put it in.
No trucks.
I have a suicide Lincoln now with 462.
It needs a lot of work but the motor runs, I was hoping it wouldn't.

The back window is worse but the sides and bottoms look solid. I just want to get it back together for summer soon, I'll get the underside after.

You know, they require a picture for approval, I hit join but they didn't accept me because I don't have a picture that proves I have one, lol. Maybe I will take one.

I had to request to join twice.

For me though only thing stopping me from actually driving around in the Lincoln is a Provincial inspection. I bought it in Washington and drove it back up to Canada. Somehow while the car was parked in my driveway, a chip in the windshield appeared and of course it cracked right into the drivers line of sight. I haven't had the spare $1200-$1400 to replace the windshield and get it inspected

The locks don't work cause my "vacuum relay" leaks and it's not worth removing the entire dash to get it out and fix it/get another.

Do all of your windows work?
I took apart and cleaned up a bunch of window switches, greased all of the window tracks and cleaned up the points on of the of the window relays in the trunk. got rid of the black connectors for the windows and re-wired some new stuff in for the drivers cluster.
Sometimes the back windows work, but I've got the drivers window working. Front passenger window won't work at all though and I know the motor works.

I wish parts for these cars weren't so damn expensive too

I don't know yet. The most I've done so far, you've seen and I hooked up an electric fuel pump to a gas can to see if it will run. It runs good, no brakes, pedal is a rock. I wanted to play with metal first.

I'm not sure if I'm 100% on how they(locks/windows) function.

When it was running, they did not work. Lights worked, radio made noise.

I need to get vacuum diagram, I have wiring. I saw wiring to locks and doors when I briefly looked at it.
If you could give me a quick rundown on how the vacuum part works would be great.
I might gut the vacuum system and go full electric.

What about ignition lock ring key? I had to put a new ignition cylinder in, it was easy to get off but I don't know where to find pic related that fits. Nobody knows for certain which it is.

I just made it hand tight, didn't used any tool for it.
It doesn't really need to be tight

>>17089756

This pic, now I see it.
Windows have wires.
Locks have hose.

Looking at the shape, I might be able to use the switches from my 79. They look the same, the flat toggle thing... maybe I can use the 79 switches in place of the 68 lock switches somehow so it keeps factory appearance but works strictly on electric.

lmao, I have this garage/shop, the 79 got burned so I started stripping it down and thought "well I need a new car," parked the 68 next to it and now its stuck until the 68 moves... maybe with a purpose of I can get the locks to work.

Knowing GM it's probably a grille swap if anything. You need to make sure the grille are the same size and shape on the outside edge though.

I know Plymouth Valiant's and Dodge Dart's are bolt-on swaps.
>>

For 1970 its grill, fenders (just for the sidemarkers), fender extensions (headlight bezels too), and bumper. Not sure if there's anything else required structurally. I just don't want to look like a tryhard asshole with a 70 frontend and a 72 rear.

71 and 72's are a lot easier to swap around though.

Chrysler was a pretty innovative company.
>>
>>17101203
They were a poorly run company
>>
>>17101203
This. They came out with a lot of the shit we still use today. Chrysler produced the first car with power steering for instance. Too bad the never invented reliable engines.
>>
>>17101314
Yet Power steering was invented by a GM engineer who took his designs to Bendix. A lot of chrysler's "innovations" were bought from someone else
>>
>>17101221
Then how did they survive the Great Depression?

>>17101400
Chrysler standardized electronic ignition, and proved the alternator was a better alternative to the generator. They were prototyping DOHC engines as early as 1964. They were the first to use the Simpson gearset. They invented the first overdrive units then sold the rights to Borg-Warner.
That's really just a handful. People like yourself don't see anything that Chrysler has done because they've always been viewed as a conservative and contemporary company.

Hey guys, I have a question.
I'm the dude from the other day who's car had bad stuttering when I was reaching high RPM's, turns out the issue that I had was regarding the power draw that the fan was taking from the starter solenoid relay.

When I took the positive cable off of the run beam on the solenoid (negative is connected to the negative of the battery) the fan obviously wouldn't run but the car operated as it usually would.

So, (and please don't crucify me for this) for today I decided to connect the positive cable to a fuse that only has power going through it when the car is on.

I'm on a forum and they're saying that this is a horrible idea, and I risk a fire. Where should I connect the positive cable then?

If I run it to the starter solenoid the car stutters.
If I run it to the fuses, the car is a fire risk.
If I run it directly to the battery it wont turn off when the key turns the power off.

Any ideas?
>>
>>17102513
Do you have a relay for the fan?

If not

1973 Dodge Charger with 440. Not much of it stock so wiring could be out of whack. It was starting last year, put in storage over winter. Put the battery back in and was getting electricity to the dome light and tachmeter inside with a buzz in the ignition, gave it a couple tries turning the ignition and no buzz. Car is completely dead, no light, no buzz, nothing. Battery is good, reading 12.7 volts, tested most of the wires I could see in the engine bay. Think it could be the starter relay. Fusible link doesn't show voltage when attached to starter relay along with ground, but when I take them off the relay and attach them together it shows voltage to the fusible link. Anything else I should try before I buy a new starter relay? What are the chances of me buying the new relay and it messing up again if there are other issues?
>>
>>17106308

If old, was it kept on a float charger?

>>
>>17106362

The old battery, wasn't kept on a charger. I haven't tried testing the voltage when cranking. Nothing happens with the key in the ignition so I assume there's no electricity getting to the car somewhere.

I dont mind the rock hard brake pedal, its just the lock up. Before I bought it, the grandpa that owned it let it sit for a few years, but taking the drums off seemed like everything was in decent shape. Guess I was just wondering if there was some old trick to adjusting them a certain way to have them apply a bit...lighter(?)

When you opened them up, did you see the adjusting stars? These "self adjust" the brakes to make up for wear over the lifetime of the shoes/drum. You can adjust them back, however, but removing the drum, locating the star, pushing back the lever which keeps it from coming unadjusted, and then turning it the direction that bar was keeping it from going. My advice is to start with small adjustments, count each turn and apply the same amount to each wheel. It will be a trial and error process until you've gone too far. After that, the star can be tightened from the back side with a flathead screwdriver through horizontal slots.

That's probably one of the most piss poor explanations there could be, so I suggest you watch some youtube vids on drum brakes to make sure you have the concept before just tackling it. Brakes are important and you need to make sure you do it right. Better to have them tight and work, than loose and iffy.

Another alternative is to upgrade to disc brakes, it's expensive, but may be worth it if it's what you're looking for.

Pic related, you can see the adjusting parts on the bottom, the silver cylinder with the adjusting star.
>>
>>17110817
Not really. If they're locking the wheels up that means they're working as intended.

About the only thing you can do is maintain situational awareness and (try to) keep space between you and the cars in front of you.

ABS and disc brakes makes everyone soft and too reliant on tech to save them.

>HOW TO ADJUST DRUM BRAKES
>BY ANON

With the drums on, run the shoes up until they're noticeably dragging on the drum. Then back them off until they're just _barely_ dragging, just enough you can hear a little scraping. Or maybe 1 click short of audible drag.

Graduation you are your own strove.

Well the thing is, there's almost always a lip on the inside of the drum, from the shoes wearing into it. So you have to back the shoes WAY off to get the drum off. After the drum goes back on it's just run them up until they sit where they wanna sit. But if your method works for you then by all means use it.

In that area that's just the fender. The rocker box terminates right right at the front of the door where it connects to the torque box that connects the rocker box to the front subframe.

OTOH Fords don't usually rust their fenders like that (while GM's do) so a thorough underside inspection is recommended. No need to buy scrap metal even if it is only $1100

It's a 74' 1500cc "Fuscão". Brazilian beetles didn't had any suspension upgrades or many accessories across the years, only engine size changes and disc brakes on the last models (fucking late 80's).
So mine has these "guards" on the bumpers and I brought it with larger wheels (5.5" wide front and 6.5" wide rear), engine's stock, I just "looked after" it, changed fuel and brake lines, bushings and greases on the suspension. Had to redo the gearbox after a year I bought it, but only because I managed to destroy almost every gasket when my generator went kaboom. So there's that.

I've got a 1500 too, seems like everyone in the US has a 1600, 1300, or 1200 depending on age. It's not a common displacement here. I've got a deep sump that ups the oil capacity to at least 6 quarts and filter bracket off the high flow pump. The engine takes a while to warm up when it's cold (around freezing), and I don't think I have a thermostat installed. I run pic related oil for the additives, change it at 3k and check the valve clearances.
>>
>>17119924
I changed the oil 2 thousand km (about 1.3k miles) just to make sure. I always used 15w40, so I don't know.
I just started reading the book, I did valves and timing when I bought it, I have yet to do it again.
In all honesty, this car is in way better shape than the car I bought, a year and a half ago.

What aftermarket wheels would look good on this car?

Would you call me a cunt if I said that the wheels that are currently on it are the best ones you can get?

I don't disagree, but, the 4-wheel drum brakes suck and parts are almost as expensive as a disc conversion. The only drawback to it is that the stock wheels won't fit with discs, so I'd have to change wheels. Otherwise, I like the hubcaps.

If he could get it down to a lower price and was willing to do the work it could end up being a good project. The parts for older mustangs are plentiful and easy to acquire so its not like he'll have any issues.

Floor pan is $40 bucks but labor to weld it in probably wont be cheap. Never the less, i'd say a 66 mustang would be a hell of a lot more fun than the truck. I'd also check the engine if he goes to look at it because if i recall correctly the '66 wasn't available with a 302.

Sup Br/o/s I put some new shocks and struts on the mustang a few days ago, rides almost like a normal car now.

The shocks were completely fucked... i compressed them by hand when i took them off and couldn't pull them back apart... they're still stuck compressed...

I miss my old Caprice so much. So many nights just sitting listening to the CB.

These comfy bench seats! lol Not too much CB activity in my area, but I'll be doing it anyway!

Nice car! Beautiful color!

It was my first car. Paid $400, put her through her paces for a year and sold it for $800 when I went to college. Used the profit to buy a 97 Grand Prix coupe. Good car, but looking back I liked the Caprice better.

speaking of caprices, do yours tend to "walk" when the steering wheel is rotated fully to either side?

The first time I rode in my brother's caprice it freaked me the fuck out. He said it was normal.

I'm not sure if he meant normal as in for that model year or normal as in for that car.
