I've been very keen on getting an NG 900 or a 1998-2002 9-3 as my first car and I've just found a low mileage NG 900S for a decent price. While I'd have preferred an SE, this one not only ticks most of the boxes but is being sold close enough to a mechanic friend of mine who will hopefully be able to check it out for me.

Is an NG 900S worth getting or should I wait for an SE or a better 9-3 to come along? How viable will it be to upgrade it over the long term? I've heard the turbo in the 900 engine was a bit crap so it's be great to replace it for example.

Also, let's have a general SAAB thread. I saw a classic 900 parked nearby the other day that was in such good condition that it seemed new. It put a smile on my face.

Upgrade the PCV since the downpipe runs close to the oil pan.
change oil at least once a year or twice a year so you have winter and summer oil if you have harsh conditions or drive a lot.
Stiffer rear suspension is a plus since it's kinda mushy.
there's cheap tunes for those that bump up the torque.

Example of what the cheapest and weakest tune does to the B205 engine.

Forgot to copy the link for the procedure.

I did it and I'm not a mechanic so it's not that hard.

Thanks for the tips and the links.

It's a 1997 900 and I think they still used the B204 at that point. I hope most of it still applies though.

It's a "1997" because it was released in fall 1997, but it's the 1998 model since they always roll out before the official year.
My 9-5 2003 rolled out in sept 2002 and my 2004 9-5 Estate rolled out in nov 2003.
It's chassis will reveal it's date.

Those tri-spokes are hot.

Actually I was thinking of the 9-3 while googling 900 for some reason.
Just check under the hood to see if it's the T7 or the T5.
B201 and 202 T5 have bigger pistons and can take more punishment than T7, so if you're in for tuning you're in luck.
Though you'll need to replace that turbo if you want some power out of it.

3-spoke is a thing that almost always look good on SAAB but not on other cars.
>>
I have nothing of value to add other than to say that I had a 99 9-3, manual.

I miss her dearly. Find a good one and you will love her.

Yeah, I'm definitely looking for one that has plenty of life left for that very reason. I don't even know why I like 900/9-3s so much but they've been a favourite of mine since I first saw one.

My mother had a '97 or '98 900 SE Turbo 5-speed (non-"sensonic") when I was young. 3-spoke wheels and all. We even brought it from Deutschland to the states.

When I was 15 (2004), my mom upgraded to a 2005 Audi S4 6-speed and wanted to give me the SAAB. I already knew quite a lot about cars at that point and was tempted (the whole turbo thing was a huge turn-on) until I saw the availability and cost of parts / insurance. Plus, aftermarket parts are rare and WAY expensive.

I declined the SAAB; she sold it and got me a 5-speed RSX (Integra for non-burgers; and yes, my mother is rich). Honestly I know I got a better car and don't regret turning down the SAAB at all.

Is it really that hard to find parts for these 2006-2007 9-3s? I know it'll obviously be harder than the average car but I've found some crazy deals on some low mileage examples and would love to get one and tune it up a bit

Depends on where you are. I don't know about the US but it's not difficult or particularly expensive to order parts in most of Europe. There are still a fair few SAAB specialist garages as well.
>>
>>17080583
I live in Pittsburgh in the US and there are a actually at least 2 Saab specialists in the area here so I might be alright
>>

Parts are definitely going to be more expensive then but people tend to overestimate the upkeep costs of SAABs.

eSaabParts, GenuineSaab, and eEuroParts are all great resources for Saab parts. I had a 9-5 Aero for a while and never had an issue finding OEM parts I needed. Brew City Boost has some good tuning parts for Saabs as well

Why would insurance be more? Just the engine size or do turbos make that much of a difference?
>>
>>17082328
Different insurance companies look at various different things to determine rates. A common thing is that liuxury cars' parts are more expensive to repair so rates go up.

OP.
The 900ng will be a t5. It's either a turbo b204 or a non turbo b234. The b234 non turbo will be very reliable, but not too fast. The b204 has a meh turbo, a Garret T25 I think. They don't last long and won't push much on that car. Upgrading to a Mitsubishi td04 used in the b205R, b235R, and B234R will not be too difficult. Or you could get crazy and go with a gt27 or gt30. Personally I'd look for a 9-3se in a junk yard and grab the turbo, manifold, intake and intercooler. The 9-3se had viggen popping.

The suspension changed a little between the 900ng and 9-3. The 9-3s being better and it is backward compatible. I it was the control arms, but I'm not sure.

The b2x4 head bolts need to be retiorqued every so often. They used stretch bolts so you can safely retorque 3 times then you need to replace the bolts. If you can I'd check the timing chain guide plunger. If its more than 15mm the chain should be replaced. Rarely does this happen and even more rarely does not replacing the chain cause an issue other than noise.

Much appreciated

Thanks for the advice. It's good to know that I can use 9-3 parts for some things. There are plenty of them around.
