>air locker
You have the switch, the compressor, the resivour, the manifold, the individual solenoid actuators, the nylon flex tubing, the quick release fittings, tapping air through diff housings, sealed o-rings susceptible to failure (and necessitate unassembling the diff when they do) and moisture being brought into the differential as another anon mentioned earlier.
The e-lockers are just a switch and an actuator, of which the air locker system has anyway on top of everything else.

The only minor gripe I have with the e-locker is the ramping actuation, which gives a minor delay whith diff rotation, where the air locker is immediate so long as the locking pins mesh.

I've done "air leakers", never again.
>when you engage a diff and the compressor continuously pumps aimlessly
Fuck air.
>>
If you're doing medium to light offroading and overlanding e lockers are perfectly fine and preferable.
If you're doing medium to high intensity crawling you should get an air locker.
elockers dont let you reverse and the engagement mechanism is stronger with air and wont wear out.
>>
>>17083171
what if youre just riding around slowly dildoing your anus and stopping at mcdonalds between trails?
>>
>>17083171
They do let you reverse, it just ramps off then back on which is strange when not used to it.
I think I'd almost go with a ratcheting Detroit style locker next time around.
If I went with air again, it'd be with steel solid brake lines, braided flex hose to the diffs and some sort of air dryer off the compressor, but that still doesn't solve the o-ring dilemma.
>compressor keeps pumping aimlessly
>fail to find leak with soapy water
>...
>steady stream of air from diff breather
The stuff nightmares are made of.
+1 for comp vehicles and rock crawlers though, positive and immediate engagement is handy.

I have a Detroit in the rear. For a dedicated offroader I would always go dedicated 1 way or spool in the rear. I have an eaton in the front because I don't want to deal with air, but if I did more crawling I would just get air. having an onboard compressor is really nice anyway and after that it's pretty quick to just do air lock. You'd burn out an elocker quick doing any crawling where you have to rock the weight around.

but yea the simplicity of electric cant be beat.

$15-20k on the latest, cleanest, lowest mileage factory turbo diesel HDJ80.
Or the latest, cleanest, lowest mileage factory TD42ti GU Patrol.
Or the latest, cleanest, lowest mileage 3.2DiD NT-NW Pajero.
What sort of rig or body style you after? Fuel of choice? Late model or not important?
>>
>>17083507
The mounted compressor is nice, I'm looking at fabbing up my own rear bar along with a guard chop which will double as an air tank. It's still the rest of the crap from the compressor onwards that's susceptible.
Still undecided obout the e-locker ramp engagement though which is why the ratchet lockers appeal, even the lunchbox style "Lokka" brand lockers.
I love the idea behind the cable Ox Lockers, although they're only available for the generic US fullsize type diffs without any real option for my choice in Nipponese 4x4s.

Probably as long as we keep having these threads. Lockers are a very relevant discussion for offroading.

Anyway, I took my LX450 out innafield today and tried to get the rear locker to work. Front locker works fine and ripped figure 8s hoping that the rear locker will seize during one of the times I turned it off then back on again.

After 15 minutes of fighting with the steering wheel like an autist, I gave up. Anyone have luck fixing this stuff or is it time to take off the connexions and see what's wrong with it?

>>17083620
Those 80 series Land Cruisers have people rolling on 400k miles without an engine or transmission rebuild. Especially if you're in a dry, salt-less climate like 'straya.

Those older Patrols or 80s are pretty much golden. You can acquire, fix, and maintain two 80 series with 30k in Canada. Not sure how 'straya does its used car market or if everything is really equal. (Though, I heard New Zealand completely cucc'd themselves out of used cars and off-island imports a few years ago so RIP patrols and 80s).

I hear those international Ford Rangers are pretty gud, though. Saves you more on gas, too.
>>
>>17083658
You're in luck.
http://www.ox-usa.com/78-dana-44
The only drawback with the system is you have to find a relatively straight path for the heavy-ish cable to pass through to the passenger compartment if you go for the mechanical cable system.
Otherwise you can choose air or electric engagement for the same diff centre.

Petrol or Diesel?
Nothing really wrong with the petrol V6, although the 3.8 is automatic only if that matters to you (can't remember if the 3.5 was still available in the NP).
The 3.2 diesel is brilliant when it's working, but it's the early iteration of the 4M41 which is an older style distributor injection which is still electronically controlled. If the fuel pump fails, AFAIK Freo Diesel are the only workshop in the country who rebuild them, and that's at a cost of almost $5000. There's no real way of knowing the lifespan of the pump, and I know of one example that's over 400,000km on the original pump.

If it were me, I'd try stretch the budget to a higher mileage 4th generation NS or NT Common Rail Diesel.
>>
>>17083895
Diesel, got warned off petrol because of all the issues. Would stretch the budget but the loan is finalised. Didnt know that about the pumps, cheers for giving me more shit to worry about.

No dramas mate!
Another thing to worry about if going for a diesel auto NS is keep a bit of cash up your sleeve to do a troublesome DPF delete. NT onwards didn't have the DPF and the NS manuals are also exempt. If I was to do it again, I'd happily buy the same 4th gen closer to 300k km over a 3rd gen a little over 250k. My 280,000km NT for example ended up being $13,500 ($7k+$6.5k trade-in), which at the time wasn't much of a stretch over an NM/NP diesel.

Presuming this is the outgoing 4D56 2nd gen anon?

Well apart from the DPF which was only on a select few models (only auto diesel NS and is cheap enough to delete anyway) there's no other downsides. Better power and economy.

On the upside of that $5k rebuild (that's even if you run into that issue), apart from that the rest of the car is quite heavy duty, including the motor. Blank off the EGR, fit a catch can and there's no reason the Paj won't last the rest of your lifetime.

I never knew that MT tires this small could actually be decently capable

After work I decided to take them out for a little test drive in the (closed for the season) kid slopes. I went in with the idea to just try getting up the slopes and see how far I got. The snow is pretty wet and slushy at this point, and I knew that the snowmobiles even struggled a little bit with the same hill today, needing to gather speed to get over it

You can guess my surprise as the pickup just kinda continued going up the hill with no issue, as if it was the driveway at home. I stopped mid-hill to go out and see if I was just falling through and hitting solid ground beneath the snow, but no; it was simply climbing. Jumped back in, engaged the low-range and sure enough; it did the hill-start on idle without any sign of slip

Would've required me to cut, weld and paint to make it fit - and when I'm gonna do that I'll go for 35's, flares and a lift

>>
>>17085921
wat? with a small lift and banging out the pinch-weld you could easily fit 33s with no rubbing. Even easier if you get wheels with some backspacing. Unless hiluxs are that much different than similar year tacos

Tacomas are a bit bigger I believ, and have bigger arches

These 31's are, I shit you not, less than five milimetres/013⁄64in close to touching the rear of the front wheelarch when turning

Thats the reason why I said that if I'm going to do anything bigger it'll be 35's and all that - no point going small when I've gotta do the same amount of work

If you look at >>17084124 and this photo then you can imagine how tight it is when turning now
>>
>>17086073
>>17085700
33" fit on Hilux easily with minimal lift, but then you run into gearing issues. And ongoing steering wear and tear.
If the 31s excel at what they do, there's not much reason going bigger unless you're more interested in form over function.

For me personally, price. I got mine for a bargain, so between basically not paying for any of the bolt on parts and lift, low millage, factory rear locking diff, and minty leather, I picked the runner.

I got it shipped up here to SC from Jacksonville FL. Some guy had his done up by a custom shop down there, (King's chariot) drove it for a year, and upgraded to a Land Cruiser.

He originally paid 15-ish, I paid 10 and transit.
>>
>>17089024
4runners are generally cheaper and easier to find. I own a 3rd gen and it's a great vehicle on and off-road. but I'd trade it for a clean 80 series any day

Stops the dramas and frequent manifold fouling modern diesels get, particularly Mitsubishis. With the Paj, the EGR can be disabled with a 55 cent resistor from Jaycar. That'll stop the carbon that cakes with oil vapours in the first place. Removing the oil vapours is a little extra redundancy and keeps the intake a lot cleaner.
The other benefit of disabling the EGR is much better turbocharger manners, as all the outgoing energy from the combustion chamber is directed straight over the turbocharger instead of bypassed into the intake. This decreases turbo lag and increases fuel efficiency (about 10-15% in my case).
>I remember jamming a cork in the rocker cover in my old datsun
Do that with a modern turbo diesel and the crank case pressure will find its way out every seal and gasket.
>>
>>17090712
I'll add, the resistor method of EGR disabling is for post '06 Pajeros, Tritons and Challengers.

>>
>>17090847
Yeah, its pretty hard to see. I just pulled back the split conduit near the MAF and soldiered it in with a bit of heatshrink.
For some silly reason if you need to pass a sniff test, it's easy enough to either completely remove or install a simple breaker switch that bypasses the resistor.

All it does is trick the signal going to the ECU into reading below a certain ambient temperature where the ECU would normally activate the EGR. Heaps of forum threads on the subject if you get stuck, or ask here :D

Haha, I appreciate it. I'm used to trolls, there's plenty of them on other auto forums I go on.

I bought built because I don't have the time nor willpower and physical space to handle two projects at once. I'm currently balls deep in a complete restoration of a 76' fiat 124 spider, which is occupying all of my free time and 1 and a half bays of my garage. I only just finished a like 2 & 1/2 year down-to-the-frame restoration on a e-type jag.

Once I finish it, I might bump up the runner another quarter inch, because currently there's only about a centimeter between the front tires and where the liner comes up into the wheel wells, so ANY mud at all rubs like no tomorrow. It doesn't really affect anything, but it's loud as all get out when a rock gets up there.

So, friend of mine went to an interview at AT in Drammen on Monday, and he was not impressed... he felt treated like air. Just shown around quickly around the workshop, not asked questions and then basically just told that the guy showing him around didn't have all that much time and had to leave

I mean, everyone can have bad days, but when he gets up in time to be leave Trysil and be in Drammen at 7:30, for an interview where they were the ones contacting him... you kinda see the deal

Oh, also; are you gonna try out the bicycle stuff in the mountain this summer?

They're for spacing, they're spacers.
They space the wheels out.
That's it.

>>
>>17096698
For spacing out wheels with absurd backspacing so that the tires will clear the springs, in contrast to the usual and often assumed use of spacing them out for "stance" or whatever term someone happens to use for their purely aesthetic reasoning.

I'm going to give you SOME credit and assume that you understood that, and were only pretending to be retarded for the sake of extending this retarded argument that you've been hoping for at least since earlier in this thread and likely in the last one as well.

THIS is what you've been hanging out in /ORG/ for all day while I'm at work, accusing people of being me in the hopes you can catch me so we can have this argument? Is this really that enjoyable for you? I don't get what's so great about it. You happened to make the assertion while I was here (after I posted) but failed to correctly identify me. Does that count as a win or a loss to you? I'm not entirely sure how this game is played or what the point is.

Makes them a lot louder on the highway, I'll tell you that. Deflating your tyres down to 9psi will help the most. Also as wide as possible (though, some people say to not have them too wide but I doubt them).

Also

That's like 8 months for me ):

>>17100514
How were the Wrangler MTs? Both of the fabs near me discourge them for recommendation of the Duratracs or any of the BFGs. Did you find any issues with them?
I hear sidewalls, noise, and quick wear time. But I've never had them.
>>
>>17102086
I never had any issues with them. Sidewalls are thick, they're louder than an AT but quieter than an MT, and wear like iron.

The MTRk that's available now would likely be a completely different story though. Keep in mind these were the Military-OZ with the original MT tread pattern.

I can recommend the BFG KO2, Hankook Dynapro ATM and Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs

KO2 is a perfect all-around tire
Dynapro is decent all-around, but performs better on the road
Duratracs are quite capable, but most suited to winter conditions and tons of rain

I have a set of Cooper Discoverer AT3's that came with the pickup... they're mediocre at everything, cant really recommend

I'd go for the KO2's
>>
>>17102492
My favourite "money no object" A/Ts would be in this order Mickey Thompson ATZ, BFG KO or Cooper ST. Can't comment personally but the General Grabber and Goodyear Duratrac are getting a lot of critical acclaim. I guess you can't really go wrong with the American branded tyres.
Never seen issues personally with Bridgestone 697, although there's a large amount of people in the Pajero club reporting failures. Hankook and Toyo seem to be ok from reports too.

At the end of the day if you're using it for offroadan, make sure you get a Light Truck construction tyre in your size. A lot of the Japanese/Korean manufacturers just have passenger construction on a lot of sizes where the Americans seem to cover a broader size range.

Eeeeh.... I don't wanna talk about it really
Pretty much all uses of a motorized vehicle outside of public roads and cultivated land is prohibited. If you want to use one you'll need a special permit from whoever owns the land, and from the municipality & police where the driving will take place. These permits are also only given to people who are going to do work, own forests which they need to inspect and so on
Its really fucking strict

I dig'em quite good. They grip damned well in the snow (haven't had a chance to test them on anything but pavement, gravel and snow yet), road noise is not noticeable (small cabin and half-shitty roads makes it so that unstudded tires all sound pretty much the same), perform quite alot better on-road than both the 12 year old BFG AT's that were on the wheels, and my "legal" set of Cooper Discoverer AT3's.

All in all I'm very happy with them, so far they seem like the exact tire I wanted
