Audio system advice needed.
Took a drive tonight and my audio system started acting up. Car is 1999 Corvette. The head unit, amp, and sub are all about as old as the car so it's probably time to just gut it all.
I want something of decent quality that has some bump, but can keep me in the $300 range. My hearing is shot anyway, so it doesn't have to be audiophile quality.
Whatever is in there is pretty much guaranteed to be better than anything you can put together for $300 today, just fix whatever the issue is. Old doesn't mean bad. People pay $600+ for Alpine EQs from the early 90s and PPI amps from the 80s because they sound better than most of the high end stuff that's made today.
You'd get a lot of gain having most, if not all replaced. Replace speakers with anything that isn't made out of paper like the stock ones, will make a big difference. The sub and amp would probably take some research on what would fit and still have the oem look. Head unit there is a big variety. I personally would recommend HD radio.

I just replaced the amps with a set of kenwood amps my dad had from the 90s. Old ones were overheating. Theyre pretty decent. The unit is garbage, I'll probably try my luck with an ebay unit.
Basically what happened is the sub quit putting out the bass. I could get the bass to come back by turning the volume up really loud. So Im thinking its the sub, but really anything could be wrong.
Maybe I should start with the sub because it is dated for 2001 so it's probably toast, and work up from there.
What would be a good sub for a decent price?

I found out yesterday that the numbers by the HD radio station are not signal strength, but are other stations.
Owned this car for four years.

>Decent head unit - $100
>Decent component speakers - $100
>Subwoofer - $50
>4-channel amp - $50
Build your own sub box out of MDF or plywood and bridge two of the 4 channels to drive it, run the two component speakers off the remaining two channels. Basically just find shit with good reviews.

lel nothing worth buying at that price
$75 for a rf punch 8"
$100 for a pioneer 4 channel
unless you actually want to buy boss or crunch or some other swapmeet brand

Kickers are pretty cheap and lightyears better than the stock Bose in the C5s. You'll need door adapters to properly fit aftermarket 6.5 speakers into the doors. Corvettemods has them. Look into bundle deals on amp/wiring/capacitor. A single 12" sub will give good bass to most music. May rattle OEM exhaust.

if he's only going to be running a couple hundred watts and has a super tight budget a cap would a be a waste of money

It's funny just how bad the corvette's sound system is. I know you don't buy it for the sound, but considering how much the car costs you'd think you would get something decent. My father has a C7 and my stock harman kardon in my Challenger R/T blows it away.
