Aren't those cabin air filters located such that re-circulated air goes through them? If so, then if you use "air fresheners", the oils and chemicals from those will basically use up all the carbon in your cabin air filter.

My chevrolet malibu cabin filter ranges from $34.97 to $69. I don't count the K&N oily version but only the HEPA type ones without or with carbon. Instead of carbon, I'd opt for more HEPA pleats to stop pollen and spores for better allergy relief.

Carbon in air filters gets used up pretty fast anyways. So after a few weeks, the contaminants have plugged up most of the activated charcoal pores.

Depends where you shop. Some online places have low prices until you add the handling charge, shipping charge, and insurance charges. Right now, Autozone.com has free shipping with no minimum purchase. But searching partsgeek.com gives a good price for official GM price: AC Delco Malibu Carbon Cabin Filter: $13 to $18 before S&H and taxes.

I wish some place like consumer reports would test HEPA type air cabin filters to see how much of the pollen they filter out. I have triple filtered air in my home as my central air circulation system also has two stages of electrostatic filtration. Outdoors in hay fever season, I'd say that is the 100% baseline. In the car, I'm noticeably better probably at 40%. And inside the house after I change from outdoor clothes to my indoor ones, I have no watering eyes so I'd say that is 0% effect. But that's too rough a measurement for how effective the OEM HEPA air cabin filter is. I'd still like to buy one that is "better" at filtering out the smallest pollen and not just the big pollen grains.
