Pre 95?

If we go back to before the 90s, you'll end up with a Dana 28. You don't want that, period. Iirc in 90.5 they switched to the Dana 35.

Why they switched away from TTB? I don't truthfully know. Maybe the extremely bad reputation due to it being complicated. Maybe it's because it doesn't like worn parts, at all. Maybe the cost of lifting steers people away. It's costly to lift correctly.

Me, personally, I'll defend the ttb all day. Even to the point of arguing against a straight axle setup for what a majority of people consider wheeling.

IT'S COSTLY TO LIFT UP MY FUCKING RETARDED TORSION FUCKING BARS
Well, actually, it's not really costly, it's almost near impossible. I guess that's what they meant by Ranger Danger...

It's complex and I believe Ford were the only ones who ever used this type of suspension (maybe the patented it, too) so shoehorning people into that market isn't exactly "user friendly".

Anyway, these twin beams were their answer to the twin i beams. Both being otay for offroading. My friend has a Twin I Bronco which can flex pretty well

That's not how it works. Axle articulation helps with predictability when you need it the most by distributing weight across all four wheels rather than attempting to balance on two, which can often end disastrously.
>>
>>17050997
Yes a lot of suspension travel means no control, apparently you've never heard of shocks...

>>
>>17051027
>Axle articulation helps with predictability when you need it the most by distributing weight across all four wheels
Not necessarily Mr Armchair offroader. Simply having four wheels touching the ground means absolutely nothing in terms of weight distribution. Wait until you flex it up on an off camber washout out and that "flex" tries to roll the body weight downhill lifting the higher wheels with less weight.
>>
>>17051053
Apparently you have no fucking idea what shocks do.

>>
>>17051293
Small amount of weight on a wheel and SOME resistance to rolling is often all that's needed, and is always better than no weight and no resistance to rolling. Once you start to roll with one wheel up off the ground, the rotational momentum you gain before that wheel hits the ground is often enough to carry it through and roll the vehicle over where you otherwise would have been fine. Lack of articulation equates directly to a lack of stability in any instance where you're actually using that articulation. Is it going to corner as well when conefagging? Of course not, but that's not what's being discussed.

Maybe "problem" was the wrong word. But still, basically these lower ball joints are prone to breaking, so it's something that needs to be changed out after driving the shit out of them. I tend to beat on my suspension a bit, so I'll be changing them this summer, but I've heard of trucks that are at the 400k mark and are still running the stock LBJs

TL;DR: It all depends on how hard you ride them, but I'd recommend at least taking a look at them

I am assuming you mean wheel spacers.
The point is when you put on a larger tire when you turn the wheel it will be too close to the inner fender and it will rub. The spacer eliminates this.
If you mean body spacer it is the easiest way to fit new tires while not fucking with the stock suspension geometry.

Heading down state tomorrow or Friday to search through the farm scrap pile for oil well pipe, angle iron, or square tubing. Possibly stop at my uncle's to see if I can find some scrap steel there. Easier pickings if so.

Ordered two grip 30'x4" straps to make my net.

Not positive as to how I'll be mounting my deer trap yet. Probably slide square tubing into the front frame rails and bolt it in place of the tow hooks. Have it angle downwards and then have my friend weld another section going up. Hopefully it'll work out.

Took it for a ride and it started pouring rain earlier than expected. Any Michigan /org/ meetups?

first of all, kys. second of all, fuck subarus. third of all, get a samurai.

Now that that's out of the way, it really depends what you really want to do. Bumpers are great to add onto items and toughen your vehicle against hitting trees and rocks when offroad. They're also good for forest driving and when you're unsure if you can fit through an area, can just drive into it and not care.

Though, you wouldn't really be in the position to be hitting objects and forest larping if you don't have a good breakover angle and underside armour.

I just so happen to have invested in some decent belly protection since the OEM plastic piece of shit fell off while I was driving thru snow last winter and decided that I'd rather have a thick sheet of aluminum over a thin sheet of plastic any day of the week. I guess it really comes down to cost. I assume the fuckhuge bumpers cost considerably more than pic related just due to the amount of materials used, but that's just speculation from someone that is newish to the hobby. I honestly don't know any better

i see your points and if you really are doing just forest roads youd be just fine, but since you are asking about bumpers and posting pics of subarus going over logs it seems you have at least somewhat of an interest in doing a little more than that.
subararus are not designed for anything more than a dirt/gravel road. as soon as you start modifying it, it becomes a time bomb. if you lift it more than like half an inch youll be replacing cv boots every 10k miles.
if you need a dd/camper and also want to hit some moderate trails get a 3rd gen 4runner or something. if you can convince yourself to never stray from forest roads, go ahead and stick with the subie
>>
>>17057917
The idea is that it works well for the first two categories regardless of what I do, but (((can))) do the third if/when I need it to. I'm going to read more into the CV boots thing since I keep seeing it, just seems odd that that issue is never noted on any of the forums I frequent.

Non-Restricted are long guns set by the RCMP's standards (largely arbitrary). They have no limitations of use other than hunting.
Restricted guns are pistols and any long gun the RCMP decide are long guns. These require permits to buy, store, and transport. You can only shoot them at RCMP designated ranges.

I don't see what the big deal is about subarus desu. I think Subaru missed the opportunity to make a fun, high-clearance off-roader, but I still think the AWD system has loads of potential off-road.

Idk maybe I'm biased but I think they're fine. To answer >>17057600 though, I'd rather have better clearance and approach angle than a fat piece of armor at every angle on the vehicle.

That being said, both have their advantages and it really depends on what kind of terrain your looking at

For dirt road racing, the Subaru is good. For pretty much anything that does not involve a road, a 4x4 truck is generally going to be better.

What I'm thinking is a Subaru truck with their AWD system and some way to lock the center diff as well as the axle diffs.

So basically remake the Brat but at a higher stock height, solid rear axle (at least the rear, but both would be nice), lockers, and a bigger (maybe H6) engine

But of course subaru will never make such a truck because they're i busy making boiracer and lesbian cars that aren't as good as they were in the late 90s and early 2000s

idk maybe I'm jus talking out of my ass I've had 3 vitamin gummies this morning instead of two.

5.45 is the Russian knock off of USA 5.56. shoots nice with less recoil over much longer distances. Great for people who live on farms or ranches, but the round has penetration issues. (Inb4 my poison bullet autists) AK74 and cloned use this round

X39 has considerably more recoil and the bullet drops a lot faster, but it chews up cover like a mother fucker and can still be taken out to 300 yards with practice. AK47s/AKMs and clones use this round.

No clue - its probably just going to be an interview. They've been a bit interested in his dual-transfer case builds

>What do you get if you get it?
What?

37 is abit too extreme for me. If I'm going to do anything it'll be a long time coming, in which case it'll probably be a 2-inch TÜV-approved lift (this means I can get it approved and registered to the title), 35" wheels, some proper fibreglass flares made for the pickup and an ARB air locker for the rear diff

I might also have to do some engine modifications in that case, as 35" on the stock gearing might be a tad heavy

Arctic Trucks is a company that modifies vehicles for use in heavy duty offroading, arctic exploration and so on. A good example are the two Hiluxes Top Gear used to reach the North Pole - those were Arctic Trucks modified vehicles on the AT 405 38" tires, a model of tires designed and developed by the company itself.

Its essentially a job interview/hearing what they have to offer. It does sound promising as they were the ones that contacted him, not the other way around

Transfer case;
Essentially its a modification the gearing and original transfer case, meaning you have another "low range" thats even lower. Allows for some studily good climbing ability and control

https://youtu.be/HKPIJCvNghs [Embed]
Thats the truck with no driver, idling, on a stock non-turbo worn-to-fuck 60hp-ish diesel engine, with relatively small tires.

https://youtu.be/R_RK_c4Ndwc [Embed]
Here is another video with the truck seeing a bit more action. The transmission from that one is going into the Hilux in >>17067318 (You) quite soon

>>17067664
I always fall in that trap. Here "wheel" directly translates to "rim", which is a retarded word for a wheel, while the word we typically would translate to "wheel" is "hjul", which is the word we use for a wheel with the tire mounted. Wheel itself is called a "felg", with the tire being "dekk"

I dunno man, weird languages

You've gotta remember that we're the third highest ranked country in GPD per capita, and 29th in the world - which is not bad for a country with barely 5 million inhabitants

Those who are interested in getting a really capable offroad rig thats also 100% approved and street legal will often not have much of an issue purchasing a conversion, which for a Hilux, costs anything from $7700 for the 33" conversion to $35600 for the extreme 38" conversion

It might seem pricey, but you've gotta take into account what it includes;
38x14.5R17 or 38x15.5R15 tires - and these tires cost a good $1000 per tire
17x10” or 15x10” specially built alloy wheels
Custom brakes
Painted and custom made fibreglass fares
Reworking and welding of the wheel arches
New side steps
Arctic Trucks floor mats
A new removable towing-setup that doesn't make the towing equipment an approach-angle killer
Rear crash protection bar to prevent vehicles from behind going under the vehicle incase of a crash
50mm/2 inch lift front and back (may seem not much, but you don't want a stupidly high truck in deep snow)
New custom shocks front and back
New gearing in both axles
Reinforcing in the front and rear assembly
Calibration of the speedometer
Calibration of the toe and camber to suit offroad driving
Special torque-wrench for wheel swaps

And ofcourse; a full approval from the Norwegian DMV, which is something insanely difficult and time consuming/impossible to get yourself for your own build

So they do get a lot of business from their conversions, aswell as selling individual parts, ARB equipment, recovery equipment, guided tours in their cars on Iceland aswell as a lot of military contracts (mainly for converting LandCruisers to armored offroad beasts), and police contracts (armored street beasts, pic related)

I'd be interested to see if anything more goes into upgrading the diffs on the medium duty Toyotas like Hiluxs. 38" is an awful lot of tyre for the 8" differentials to cope with regardless of gear ratio.

>>17072281
You'd be surprised - the axles for the Hilux can be considered a tad overkill for the stock tires and stock engine, and they stand up to torment quite well. I know plenty of folks who run 38s, 39s and 40s on the stock axles without issue, although with a modified engine and usually some lower gearing
>>
>>17072281
In all fairness they use DANA axles, most manufacturers use them. Calling a DANA axle a ford or gm axle is like calling a BFG mud terrain a jeep tire since they happen to install it from the factory on their rubicons.

So as long as it isn't a real Ford axle, IE made in house by Ford, then it's all good.
>>
>>17072483
Just like the Landcruiser pictured above ;)
>>17072481
I've seen plenty of them fail in all kinds of scenarios, but mainly having the pinion "walk off" the crown wheel under a reverse load.

>>

1. Cheap gas
2. Ridiculous short commute for le ebin large state
3. Lots of places to offroad
So yes. If you enjoy the test drives of the vehicle and some of the TLC parts of it (steering is weird with factory lockers and acceleration is weirdly strong for the lack of torque,/ hp), then go for it.
See if you can even find dirt roads to engage lockers every day.

What ar FJ80 pricing down there? Texas benefit of no rust, too.

that being said, read some of the cost of ownership threads on mud. these arent a typical toyota. the one you buy will be at least 20 years old and was a flagship vehicle for toyota. they cost nearly $50k in the mid 90s. parts are not cheap and you will likely have to invest quite a bit into it up front in order to get it up to speed. that said, once youve done that, it will be one of the most capable, reliable and durable 4x4s youve ever owned.

Post 2008, they started selling Rangers as a cheap F150 and made the V6s better.
Otherwise, get em pre 97 for those delicious twin beam suspension and OHV V6 4.0 litres
>bitch to do work on
If you're a bitch. Nah, I had to get my clutch done immediately when my slave shat one me in January. That cost a lot for labour simply because I needed it asap and couldn't do little, meticulous work in -20 degree weather.
Otherwise, they're very comprehensive and fun if you get together with a friend to fuck around underneath.

They're the sheer pinnacle of "compact" picc'em up truccs in that they made so much fit within such a small space. Really fun to drive and good for "urban offroading" because of their small width.

People in Alberta use them to tow 8000 lb trailers all the time, too despite their 5600lb tow capacity rating.
