I want to take a moment to address the ever so polarizing issue of replacing the crush washer. Do you do it?

In the five years that I have been wrenching on my motorcycles and cars, I have never once replaced the crush washer. I've done countless oil changes and never had a single problem.

it's alright, though I can't shake the suspicion I'm leaving a lot of dirty oil behind. I mean the volume of oil coming out is very close to the volume that was poured in the first place, and I add a bit of oil near the end of the pumping to kinda help.

I can get them free from a local restaurant, so I have one cut and the rest I fill and give to a neighbor for their waste oil furnace

I have yet to find a well engineered drainpan that will hold at least 16 quarts and won't develop pinholes from being dragged on the concrete or leak from the drain cap. My Powerstroke takes 14 quarts + 1 quart archoil for a drain and fill.

Quicky lube shops won't touch my car (Porsche 928). Evidently, they fucked up a Porsche once and the boss won't let them touch any more.

When they were still doing them, I asked for a lube level check. Guy spends ages under car and finally comes out "I can't find your transmission." I asked him if he checked the diff lube level. "Yeah, that's OK." Well then, we're good to go. It's a transaxle. "Duh, what?"

And then there's the H.S. dropout looking for where to put the new oil. "It's a German car. 'Oil' in German is 'Oel'. See the cap now?"

As long as the drain plug is in, you can pour oil in regardless of the filter being on or not.

t. walmart tech. We do oil changes in pairs, upper and lower, and we pour the oil in as soon as the drain plug is in just about every car. Never makes a mess since the oil won't go through the filter without oil pressure.

>Where to dispose of used oil ?
Many people dump the bottle into the closest storm sewer opening or down their house drain if the summer time. My neighborhood is lucky to have one of the large sewer lines that each house drain dumps into. Some of the other housing communities have small main sewer lines with turns and twists.

Those small lines are a problem with oil in the winter. Two cities north of me this past winter, various houses kept on dumping their oils down the household drain. The detergents and soaps mixed with the oil and formed a sludge coating the pipe. People who flushed "wet wipes" and other durable material had it coat the pipe making it narrower. Over time, some chemical reaction occurs and it becomes "hard" and basically has to be scraped off. Their sewer pipe got so narrow that the sewer backed up and flooded 3 houses! Inspection showed that people had been flushing their used oil down the drain, but they didn't know which houses. Certainly no one would admit guilt since they would have to pay for all the damaged houses, hotel time, damaged property, and cleanup the city had to do to repair the clogged sewer.

>buy a shitty catch pan

>>17048620
>What do you mean by pumping it out?
There are different ways of removing oil especially if a flush is being done under pressure. Thus, pumping occurs because gravity doesn't make for a good flush.

Besides flushes, some places attach a hose to the main opening, plug the dipstick hole, and use pressure to force the oil out faster instead of waiting for your oil to drip out from gravity. Time is money since they can service more customers that way.

>be me
>be 18yo me
>buy 97 SL1 for $800
>be me with car in Maine
>block cracks but is wetblock
>pisses coolant until heat makes the crack seal
>continueously apply more jb weld every month
>every month the crack grows bigger
>keeps going for another year
>junked it a ~400,000 miles

I loved that car. UOA showed that it kept going for nearly 100k with an impressively bad bearing.

It's the houses with babies that keep on flushing all their dirty stuff down the toilet. It plugs up sewage pumps on occasion.
>>
I have a magnetic socket just for this. A buddy of mine gave it to me, it comes in pretty handy.

I wonder what happens if a mechanic strips the threads or crossthreads the drain pan. I heard some aluminium pans are pretty easy to rek this way. I mean, surely interns or trainees do this atleast once or so?
>>
>>17046326
Any good brand recommendations? Mine is in a bitching place to reach, need to remove a fucking oil drain engine cover.
>>
>>17054887
Tuscon, and Santa Fe. Veloster, and Genesis have less bolts, and the oil filter isnt covered.

But almost all new cars have covers, some use turn plugs to remove, some use 2 or 4 bolts, and some are fucking retarded and use 8
