Tacoma and Frontier are mid-size, not compact. The last proper competitor to the Ranger stateside was the Dodge Dakota (before the 2005 redesign that went mid-size), the Chevrolet S10, and GMC Sonoma.

The prior American Ranger was virtually unchanged from 1993 until 2011, with only minor facelifts and engine changes inbetween.
Meanwhile, in the rest of the world, the Ranger changed majorly in 2006. The split happened at this time.
See, the American Ranger was still based on the Mazda B-series, while in the rest of the world the Ranger changed to a Mazda BT-50 variant in 2006.
They're completely unrelated trucks after 2006.

They're still Compacts. It's just the compact segment has grown over the years with Fullsize and HD segments. It's simply the last NA Ranger to be developed was in the mid ninties so it hasn't had the chance to grow.
