Basically:

>Bought my dream car on a whim
>Looks good outside
>Mechanic told me it's literally two cars welded together
>Might be causing mechanical issues

I cannot afford to sell this car as it's my daily - my question to /o/ is, is it possible to strengthen the chassis of a rebirthed car, and if so, how would I go about it?

pic for attention

>I bought a car
>Help help help
>No I'm not going to tell you what my car is

You got a 2 for 1 deal goyim.

SW20 MR2
>>
>>17041218
And what model car is the MR2 body dropped on?
>>
>>17041221
another SW20 MR2, they've been welded together
>>
>>17041228
Ok so what's the problem? If the welds were done properly you'll be fine.
>>
>>17041218
>>17041194
...I know where this is going...
>VQ destroked to 2 litres for rally regulations
>>
>>17041228
if it bothers you so much sell it for a little cheaper than you bought it for to some schmuck and just buy another MR2, they made thousands so you should find another one easily and cheap enough

You fucked up but its a victimless crime situation where shit happens when you buy a car. You couldn't of known it was two bodies welded together
>>
>>17041236
my trusted mechanic after it was hoisted up on a hoist told me the welds were not that great and that it was beginning to cause some wear and tear, I assume on the drivetrain. had the welds been good quality I don't think this would of been an issue but my mechanic looked pretty fucking worried

>>17041243
can't sell due to personal reasons, the car itself is sentimental to me and I will do almost anything to bring it back to it's glory
>>
>>17041238
i'm not sure what you mean but yeah, I like rally. Was thinking of getting a MK1 and going full offroad spec
>>
>>17041247
>Body welded onto chassis
>Causing wear on drivetrain

Your trusted "mechanic" is probably your friend that knows how to change his oil and maybe did his brakes once huh?
>>
>>17041194
>is it possible to strengthen the chassis of a rebirthed car, and if so, how would I go about it?
no it isn't, it's fucked. just keep that in mind when driving and you're fine (provided the guy who cobbled that thing together is somewhat competent).

>>17041243
>You couldn't of known it was two bodies welded together
he could have looked under the car desu.
>>
>>17041253
no he's a little old asian man with a small workshop specializing in Japanese. he didn't directly say drivetrain, I just assumed it was that since I'm pretty sure that needs to be fucking straight when you drive

then again, i am no expert so I'm asking here
>>
>>17041267
so I can't even go back an ask a competent welder to go over those welds again? i'm sorry I don't really understand how welding works
>>
>>17041247
you could weld in support braces like rectangular cuts of hardened steel in key areas where its cracking. Or ignore it and just drive it into the ground because its a run of the mill mr2

why is it so sentimental? it would be way cheaper and more fool proof to just get rid of it while you can and why the body is still in one piece and just buy another one with the exact same colour/trim/options
>>
>>17041274
you could pay some guy to rip the thing apart again and do it properly but that will be so expensive that you should just A) sell it or B) live with it. if you're not planning to hoon around (and crash) with it, you might be fine (if the welds are good enough).
>>
>>17041194
>, is it possible to strengthen the chassis of a rebirthed car,

it's possible

requires stripping down the car to the metal, welding patches over the welds, then paint job.

it won't be cheap
>>
>>17041279
I am planning to get this rectified, so far your answer has helped the most.

I will looking into steel patches around the key areas, thank you

Sentimental as my father and I worked on the car mechanically a lot, however never looked underneath till now. it's basically a reminder of my dad in which i really have no other memeories with

>>17041293
while I consider it my daily, I do have another car I can drive - are there specialists in this field? or do I just approach a welder specializing in vehicles?
i don't driver her hard, and not nearly every day so I'm not that concerned about crashing or having her snap in half while I'm driving - I just am aware of the current issues and would like to have them fixed the best way possible for the future.

>>17041336
this was along the lines of what I was thinking would have to be done. thanks.

Question: if Police were to pull me over, is there any way roadside they would be able to tell the car is a rebirth? (Rego clean, not stolen, all legit)
>>
>>17041253
Try front half welded to back half, kiddo
>>

In my countery unless you are hooning about, have extremely exhaust, obnoxious bodykit or anything like that you should be fine.

Usually cops look for obvious hack-job and may try look underneath the car, or check under door rubber seals, remove inner trim and check front/d/rear pillars
