Nissan was, and is, just plain goofy. They branded their cars Datsun in the US in case they didn't sell well and would bring shame to Nissan name. Lost tons of brand recognition in the early 80s.

As far as the R32 gtr. There were emissions issues, safety regs, and costly difficulties in converting to left hand drive. There was also the fact they had just spent a good amount of money on the z32 platform. They also didn't want the dealer networks to invest in spending money in servicing the GT-R.

The R33 was actually a more neutral car than the R34. Many have said that it is more prone to oversteer at the limit. The R34 GT-R was designed to be more refined at the limit which meant more understeer in the suspension to make it break more progressively. The rear anti-roll bar got a lot thinner for the R34.

More chassis rigidity too. But the R33 and R34 share so much that you can literally take parts straight off the R34 and put them in the R33. Lots of kits to improve rigidity. Nismo will even take apart the car and put in dry CF inserts for you.
