Fine Corinthian Leather edition

A thread devoted to the appreciation all classics regardless of nationality or condition.

In which we:

>Blog about electrical gremlins
>Pray to the carb gods
>Curse the very thought of vaporlock
>Argue about Ford vs. Chevy vs. Mopar vs. AMC vs International
>Learn new stuff
>Try to bash learnin' into Kit Kat's thick skull

Picked this up a month ago.
9/10 exterior
7/10 interior (race stripped, no heater/ac)
Engine swapped for a 347 Stroker making 460bhp

What would /o prioritize doing to it to make it a reliable and safe daily driver?
>>
>>17040956
Let it be known, this is very much my first classic and I truly have next to no idea what I am doing. Was considering swapping the recirculating ball steering for a modern rack and pinion. Maybe power steering? Or is that a bitch move?

I force myself to drive an 04 Falcon everyday

So I've got a question about detailing these old cars. From what I've seen the paint on them appears to be a single coat acrylic with no other sealants or protectives in it. What is a safe way to care for the paint?

Where are you from?
>>
>>17042016
Italy. The cheapest I've seen this year was 1,349€/L and that was for a couple days
>>
>>17041996
Yes they do run on lpg, I guess you are european just like me so my advice is that you just pay more for gas and drive them on vikends becouse from my experience and experiences from my friends who also own american cars these systems are expensive, they have to go on regular services, not really reliable, takes a lot of room and you cant park in underground garages and sometimes you can sense the smell of gas in the car. Also the system fucked my jeep 4,7. I personally think lpg systems are rubish. I dont know about your country but where i live classics have 90% discount on all the taxes so with gas money included my chevy caprice is still cheaper to run than fucking twingos(if you exclude the tires, oil and other yearly basic maintinence stuff). Also I dont know why the fuck are you concerned about fuel consumption, americans were producing the best overall cars up until the 90s(now they are back at it) so if you can't feed it dont buy it becouse people like you usually enjoy letting the car rot in the garage after the purchase and dont destroy it with stupid lpg

Except it's a Chinese botnet that funnels your data to advertising companies. Everything you say or type is used as marketing. It's funded by a Chinese corporation notorious for data mining, and nobody seems to find it odd that it suddenly boomed in popularity despite there being significant, entrenched competition in the VOIP segment.

Furthermore, browser-based software is awful, depriving you of the right to know what the software is doing in your computer. You might as well spread your asshole and shove a big red Chinese dildo up it.

is it a real gt350?

my first instinct is to talk shit, but really i think these cars are for driving.

rack and pinion is cool. if you are for sure going to drive it daily, id say just drive it for a while. get a feel for what you like about it and what you dont. make changes as you go. how old are you?

pic not mine. just saw it on craigslist
>>
>>17041212
ooo fun

are you using a 5.0 block or an old 302?

with that cam youll need some new/better valve springs

also, id suggest using gt40 heads, highest flowing production head for the 302/5.0
you can port and polish the shit out of those too.

have you budgeted for the machine work? im not too familiar with the 347, but i believe the block has to clearanced. the 331 doesnt need it i think.

do you have to get that crank balanced?
is your block already bored .030 over? because that kit's pistons are 4.030
>>
>>17044225

i probably wont bring myself to get one anytime soon though. parts availability and i really dont like any of their powerplants
>>
>>17047507

>>
>>17047472
It is not a real GT350, its a tribute to the 350R race series. I would never change a single thing if it were!

I'm 27.
>>
>>17047617
in that case, drive the shit out of it. you will be tempted to do a lot of dumb stuff though; resist that urge.

maybe get into autocross and stuff. as far as changing anything; a lot of it really comes down to personal preference. for safety just making sure it stops, goes a long way. maybe throw some disc brakes up front? put a fire extinguisher in there. will you be doing the work or take it to a shop?

also, theres tons of resources for mustangs online. theres probably a ton already done to the car if its a gt350 tribute with a 347. i obviously dont know specifics, but youre probably covered for a lot of modifications (but dont take my word for it, i am no expert).

So it seems like there is a clear divide in the car community between new and old tech. Is there any objective evidence that an older piece is far superior to its newer counter part? Like, is the old school steering system (e.g. 1 finger steering) better than the newer electronic assisted system?
>>
>>17043773
God dammit. I was gonna make an Aussie joke.
>>
>>17049253
Electronic is more complex, but robs less power. On a 90HP shitbox, it matters. On a car with 375HP, it goes unnoticed.

A similar argument can be made for carbs vs. fuel injection. You can do as I do and run a carb with no annual tuning and drive it across the country untouched, but it may run a little lean or rich at times. I may not have the ideal power band at all times and lose a few MPG, but, it comes with rock-solid reliability.
>>
>>17049333
What's tuning a carb involve? I've heard there's a screw or something?
>>
>>17049352
Various things depending on the carburetor, but mainly air/fuel ratio, which is usually a screw. I've got a fairly simple carb and what can easily be adjusted are idle air flow, a/f ratio, and the clearance on the throttle flap.
>>
>>17049352
Yeah; it's basically "turn a screw" and you're done.
>>
>>17049352
turn the idle mixture screw all the way in, then 2½ turns out, which is ball park. Then you adjust the idle linkage adjustment screw up or down depending on where you want the car to idle.

That's really all there is to it. You could get into jet changes and what not but that's really only for full on performance carbs/motors. 99% of carbs will run right out the box just playing with the idle linkage adjustment screw alone.
>>
>>17049352
Oh let's see, assuming a Holley then float levels, primary main jetting, secondary main jetting, power valve opening setting, accelerator pump rate and volume, if vacuum secondary then secondary opening rate spring,to begin with. Some other items that may need trimming would be Idle Feed Passage Restriction for both primary and secondary, Power Valve Channel Restriction, Primary and Secondary air bleeds. The particulars of how it's done may vary between carb brands but this is the sort of thing that all aftermarket (and more than a few OEM) carbs need.

Now if you just mean tune-up type stuff then yeah idle speed and mixtures are done with screws. Typically standard.

LPG conversions used to be very popular in the days before fuel injection was ubiquitous, at least for certain off-roaders, who found that carburetors couldn't handle extreme angles without stalling. I don't know where you can find kits anymore though.

What do you think, boys? Dude wants $500.

59 Buick Invicta with a 401 Nailhead.

I figure, worst case, I can pull the engine, scrap the car for 300 and sell the engine for another 500. Or rebuild it and use it myself.

Hard to lose for $500.
>>
>>17052130
That's pretty cheap but for the love of fuck why would you scrap the car?
The only reason to ever scrap anything like that is if it's %100 percent fucked and way beyond fixable.

That's why I said "worst case", bro. I hate the idea of it, but it's the bottom line recouping costs idea. Just trying to justify spending the cash. I'm guessing it'll take an easy Grand to get this old boat back on the road, most likely not counting replacing the tires.

So I've removed the first of 3 engine wiring harnesses. It was barely held together by electrical tape and the insulation was cracked in so many places that it almost fell to pieces when I removed it.

Really all you need to do is drop a marine 4.3 into a Corvair and it'll be lightning quick.
You'll most likely die in the encounter though.

You are correct in that stock Corvair engine just isn't capable of making the kind of power you want out of a 60's car.

For someone who grew up in or close to the Eastern Bloc around the fall of Communism, or earlier, it can be difficult to treat these things as classics. I mean, there are many of us who do treat them as classics, but that's usually due to an acute case of nostalgia goggles.

For one, in some countries they used to be some of the most common cars up to around 20 years ago or even later. For two, you'd be more aware of how ridiculously shitty those things were. When those models were new, they were usually already outdated by 20-30 years.

tranny slipping?

>reach 5mph in first gear
>put foot down
>car doesn't gain much power
>feather throttle gently, starts to move but not much

Yes my accelerator pump is working, i've confirmed.
I don't think it has anything to do with the engine as it's able to crawl around with the parking brake fully engaged as well.
I think my transmission's boned.

sounds alot like what my c6 does occasionally. You sure you're not starting out in second or anything? The tires hooked a little too hard one day and ever since then I have to keep it in first to actually start off in first, otherwise in D it'll just rev the engine to the pork converter's stall speed until i get up to speed. I think it's either starting off in second or third and the take off is slow as shit.

also have you checked the fluid levels?

other than that the only thing i can think of is the friction material on the clutch packs are almost gone, but i think that would cause the engine to over rev and barely move the car.
>>
>>17075962
>You sure you're not starting out in second or anything?
It could be, the shifter is sloppy as hell but the effect is the same whether it's in D or 1, so if that is the case it's not something i can immediately fix.

>also have you checked the fluid levels?
I may have overfilled the tranny but i've leaked out most of the overfill, it's now maintaining a relatively good fluid level although a bit high.

What it's not doing is revving (iirc) and not moving, it's just bogging down. I'm going to try adjusting the A/FR to see if it can possible be a fuel issue.

>>17075995
what transmission is it anyway?

I don't think it's slipping if the engine is bogging down. even if you started out in second the torque converter should be able to take up some of the load and be able to get the car up to speed(eventually...) as long as it's not like a straight six or something. if it were actually slipping the engine would over rev and stuff, because the clutch packs inside the trans would literally be slipping against each other.

also, I overfilled my c6 accidentally too before that happened to mine.
>>
>>17076021
>what transmission is it anyway?
A904 and yes it's a straight six.
Unfortunately the kickdown was disconnected when the car was delivered so i think it was murdered.

If it is simply overfilled then it's going to be a hell of a time getting the fluid back out.
>>
>>17076008

>>
>>17076075

>>
>>17076138

>>
>>17076105

>>

>>
>>17076163

>>
>>17076138
I'm not sure about chrysler transmissions, but kickdowns are different than TV cables. You can run a trans without a kickdown, but you can't without a TV cable. I've deleted the kickdown on both of my c6's without issues in that regard.
>>
>>17076188
It's well known that Torqueflites can't handle not having a kickdown for some reason.

Reminds me of a friend driving his 67 Mustang with 390/C6. Not long after he bought it he complained of the trans slipping intermittently. I took it on a drive while we were at work and it seemed normal. A few days later I'm with him doing some errands after work and we leave a shop turning right. He digs into it some and says "it's doing it right now!" I look over my shoulder through the back window and there's about 250 feet of one-wheel-peel stripe behind us and getting longer by the second as the trans seamlessly upshifts to Third and the 390 doesn't even notice. I Marvel at both how easily it's doing that and how he can't tell it's up in smoke. We laughed for hours and ever since any wheelspin has been "damn tranny slipping".

pic related. remarkably similar
>>
>>17076163
The Ford Intermediate chassis was designed to take the 429/460 engines. The thing's a restyled 72 Torino which itself was a minor variation on the 68 Thunderbird. The problem now is that the engine frame mounts have been obsolete for literally decades. So he'd either have to scrounge a pair from the Ford community or fab something. Each has it's pros and cons.

>>17076197
The "kickdown" on those is actually a Throttle Valve Modulator which increases or decreases internal trans pressures in relation to throttle opening. It does the same thing as the vacuum modulator on Ford and GM transmissions. If it's disconnected, or incorrect for the application, trans pressure will remain low at high load and the trans will slip and eventually burn up. Ford's later AOD was notorious for burning up within a couple of miles if the TV cable/linkage was disconnected.

No problem bro. I paid $3500 for it, and just dumped $4400 into the paint/body this last winter. Truthfully, it will only be worth around 8k retail I'm guessing because it's a 4 door and there's still enough boomers around to think that 4 doors don't qualify as true classics. Fuck that. They don't make any of them anymore. They all need to be appreciated.

Dude, that's like quintessential 60's right there. That's how they looked right down to the 60's-shitty paint that shines but isn't glossy like modern clear coats. You might find nicer but it'd be hard to find a better representation of how they really were imo.
