It's Yamaha answering the call for glory that is continuing the SV650's legacy, but it's a parallel twin. The new SV is boring and underwhelming.

The FZ07 is a really nice bike. It's odd because it seems like a better package than the FZ09.

If I were going to get something -new- to replace my street SV, I'd get an FZ07.

The only Aprilia I'm interested in is an RSV4 for the track.

The shiver is a neat machine, but rare over here in the states. Would be expensive and annoying to fix when I crash it.

>>17029233
They're pretty good machines for what they cost. Don't fall for the modding meme, but maybe a few hundred on suspension and it will be perfect.

as far as i understand the concept, it's a manual with a fluid plate clutch, you select the gear you want to change to and as it gets to the exact revs for the change it'll clutchless shift into the new gear. so unlik an auto it doesn't choose whatever gear it feels like with lack of response. it's goes to the gear you tell it. none of this d 3 2 1 shit.

that's pretty much why i decided on one, they seem to be a sweet general everyday bike. without any downsides. as much as i'd love a cruiser or bobber etc for the style, the mt-07 has such strong dealer support, mechanics, warranty that not getting something with that much back end going for it just seems silly.

All motorcycles for at least the past 50 years have had a sequential manual, the only people trying to push anything different are honda and most people said "no thanks" back, me included. It actually pretty much sank the VFR1200 because 90% of people didn't even realize you could buy it without the DCT (and it did a low 10's 1/4 mile when you did)

You just described a normal motorcycle transmission in your post, you can clutchlessly shift it into the gear you want.

Man I hate these stupid EU licenses. I've had my CBR500 for almost two years now, I outgrew it after about 6 months and have been dying to upgrade, but can't because of our stupid licensing systems. I have the money right now to sell my Honda and buy an S1000RR or RSV4, except I can't because I can't go unrestricted on my license till September.
>>
>>17029350

Meh bike but god tier engine. It's a shame it's wasted on the VFR really (not that the VFR isn't a good bike at what it does), but that engine is totally wasted in the VFR.

Pictures of crashed bikes are interesting. A bike laying on its side doesn't damage anything. It's the impact and slide that hurts it.
I will never understand why some people go into a panic mode and feel like they need to stand up the bike right away.
>>
>>17029475
yep, everything got handled. Hopefully my frame isn't bent but I haven't ridden it since to feel anything plus the alignment is still off and I don't want to fix that until the shop has looked over it, which they will probably fix and the insurance will pay for it.

Try to stiffen it up, but the fz suspension is kind of shit no matter how much you adjust it.

I have an 02 sv650 and a 15 fz09, both are hilariously soft, the fz being only a bit better. You can swap in a zx6r rear shock or I think zx10 as well for under a few hundred bucks, the only mod being drilling out the shock where it mounts to a bigger size, ez swap.

it might be worth it.
>>
>>17029482
Nothing's loose.

The tires have less than 50 miles on them and the roads are dusty.

That's probably it since I'm 180lbs so the factory preload setting is likely ok.

I know you are rich Kang and all that, but you will pay many mud disks for that lever. It is held on only by a pin and one bolt. It is super simple to fix speaking from experience. Crashing happens, it is part of learning, maybe take this chance to try and sort it yourself. If you fuck the lever up no harm as you are gonna get a new one anyway right?

The price of the tools might be more than the lever.

I have no idea what you could do without at least some tools, I'd say a vice grip and blow torch but they aren`t free.

buy a basic wrench and socket set, a pair of needle nose pliers and a good #2 phillips screw driver and a regular flat blade screwdriver from the hardware store.
shift levers are usually held on by a cotter pin on the backside and the linkage will be a 10 or 12mm bolt.
take the bolt off and then straighten out the cotter pin and pull it out then the lever comes off. do the reverse to assemble
shift lever is easier than changing oil

You wouldn`t need all the tools, although they are useful.

Basically you need to take off the lever heat it bent part with a blow torch and bend it with a vice grip.

Levers are a funny type of mild steel that can bend before snapping, but I highly doubt you would be able to bend it back cold.

I remember seeing that pic before. I used to think it was funny you couldn't even get to the edge of a little dual sport tire. Now I understand.
It's practically impossible to get to the edge of my DS tires. The angle to even get to the edge is far steeper than even on the supersport tires I was using before. That combined with the lower level of grip means I lose traction before I even get to the edge.

while sitting on the bike put it in second, pull the clutch, get the bike up to a brisk walking speed (this will be awkward especially with heavier bikes, then dump the clutch, rev the throttle, and hold on tight. It's best to pull the clutch back in as soon as possible.

Have you ridden one?

>>17030318
If you just want a cheap, fast, non-street-legal supermoto supermoto just buy an old YZ250 and put road tires on it.
If you want something for a large portion of street riding as well, then the DR-Z400 is probably your best bet.
>>
>>17029999
Nice quads though.
>>
>>17030372
can't think of a single sumo that you won't fit on.
they sink alot due to soft suspension once u sit down assuming you weigh around 75kg
>>
>>17030402
I weight 20kg less, really shredded atm, so I need to re-test.
yup thats me, been busy with studies only got time to lift.
still kinda scared since my accident last year but im gonna start riding regularly again
>>
>>17030375

Holy crap, just checked the price, they're expensive as fuck, same cost as the license.

Yeah, will look into something cheaper, good idea about checking out a dealer, my town barely got any motorcycle gear dealers though, might ask around though. Don't want to buy complete cheap crap though, I will use the boots when I get my license and first bike anyway. As do they say, you're too poor to afford cheap stuff. Thanks for the idea though mate, much appreciated.

The thing is, exams are quite difficult here, and you need every edge you can get.

holy shit where have you been

and haven't it been 3 years now? Why didn't you move up in license tier?
>>
>>17030430
Oh and I should add that all the 250 2T MX bikes will work fine. I just used the YZ as an example because it's the most common and the only japanese one still around.

Since they're all comparable, just consider what class of bike you want to start with. A MX base bike will probably be better on a track. An enduro base will have quite an advantage if you ever road ride it.
If you buy anything really old or with a lot of hours, save some money in your budget to rebuild things. 4 stroke vs 2 stroke is mostly a matter of preference. 4 strokes will generally go longer between rebuilds, but the rebuilds are more expensive, and you still have to do frequent oil changes and shit anyway.

travelling a bit and studying
no idea who that is

its been a year since this past february, I want a bigger bike but my parents dont let me and I work for them so Im kinda fucked, im saving money though since I can afford the license but not the bike
Im 21 now so I was thinking about waiting 3y for the A license

I think people were more interested in your idea that you could "outgrow" any bike within 6 months, you're basically a noob for at least the first year you ride. I'm 3 years deep into road riding these days and still feel like a beginner.

That would be insinuating that the CBR500 was my first bike and I'd only been riding for 6 months. And I genuinely have outgrown it. It has been good, reliable and easy to ride, but it's just so boring. I've regularly ridden my brother's Fireblade and his friend's Street Triple and can confidently spank both of them on the road. I could happily own a litrebike now but I can't ride one on the road by law for another 5 months.

Diesel oil is where its at friendo

Same oil as a bike (no friction modifiers) for a lot cheaper than motormeme oil
>>

forgot the model but it was some Husqy SM

I think it had to be restricted though, and I've heard restricting bikes is bad for the bike in question.

yes.
I use Quicksilver full synthetic motorcycle oil. Costs $25/gal (still overpriced compared to car or diesel oils, but cheap for a motorcycle oil) and is easy to get at wal-mart.

Husky 701. Loads of bikes are able to be made A2 legal, MT/FZ07, Triump Striple, Z800e to name a few. But they wouldn't perform all that well, I didn't like the idea of strangling a bigger bike so I bought an A2 legal bike. It was a good stepping stone but it's just gotten really boring now that I've started trying bigger more powerful bikes. The lack of speed isn't the problem, it's the really bland, non-engaging handling.
>>
Everyone recommends the sv 650 but what about ninja 650? Do they have same power van and all? They're both 650cc v-twins so I assume they're the same but everyone says that ninja 650 is scarier than the sv. What gives?

I can't imagine either being scary, if anything I'd have thought the Ninja has more relaxed ergos than the old SV650. That being said, I really like the look of the new one.

the "Ninja 650" is a parallel twin and its the same shit basically.

People recommend the ER6 all the time, thats the name its got in Europe.

The new ninja 650 looks pretty good overall. I just wish it had better colors.

One setup cannot fit everyone perfectly. I don't think Showa offers a lot of aftermarket parts for adjustment, so tuners will turn to companies like Race Tech or Ohlins to get things how they want them.
