thinking about buying a 2017 WRX base model

The premium is about 1800 dollars more but doesn't really have any of the features I give a shit about

I was thinking of getting the base model with the exhaust package. Is that worth it? Does the added exhaust give it any extra power thats worth the 1k addon?

When I got my '17 wrx the salesman literally told me the STI exhaust package was a ripoff.

Just do a cobb stage 1+/2 if you really feel like it.
>>
>>17023435
Ok dank. I knew that if you put a new exhaust on a car you wouldn't get any HP gain unless you tuned the ECU to know there was a higher volume exhaust on it.

How much would a normal cobb tuner be and what exactly does Stage 1 or Stage 2 mean?

you need to go do some research about it. Stage 1 and Stage 2 is just how they name their maps for what bolt on stuff you have.

on the 15 the stage 1 tune doesn't change any hardware and is just a ECU flash. Their stage 2 map is for if you have a J-pipe installed.

Guy pulled out in front of me on a frontage road u turn. Slammed on my brakes, and he was retarded and slammed on his too, leaving me even less room to stop. Hit him going about 10mph. Needs a new hood at the least, body shop estimate was about $100 over the KBB value of the car for a new hood and paint on the hood and bumper cover, so I'm probably just gonna get a junkyard hood and fix it myself without getting insurance involved. I'm also considering a carbon fiber hood though, since it costs less than getting a new one painted, and I tend to prefer upgrading parts if I can rather than replacing with the same okay-tier part.

Luckily it didn't break my JDM grille, and one of the mounting tabs for the headlight was broken but I was able to plastic weld it back on, good as new. The hood pushes down on the grille now though so I'm leaving the grille off until it's fixed.

Nice, you did the rear wiper mod.

Yeah, luckily the core support is still straight. If it needed any frame pulling it would have been totalled for sure. I also got an estimate to paint my rear bumper, spoiler, and fix the dent in my right rear quarter panel, $1400. Wish I had the $3k for the body work it needs.

I do not, my 19 year old japbox is rust free.
>>
>>17025850

>>
>>17025843
Is it body rust or just running gear? If it's the later you can just paint on some rust converter and it'll be fine.
>>
>>17024164
Eh, it's not so bad. Take off air intake, battery and washer fluid bottle and it's all right there :'D it's so simple
>>
>>17024118
Yeah I did the wiper, love how it turned out!

I'm about to do a new rear sway bar since I get a lot of body roll back there, so that's next for me. I can't do very much with the NA 2.5d, so I'm gonna devote a lot of my build to suspension and handling, which should be fun

>>
>>17026438
STI makes more power and handles better than Forrester XT. Fozzy is more comfortable and has more storage space than the STI
>>
>>17026387
Body rust. I already stopped the quarters from rusting through like the older wagons suffer from but I'm getting some dark rust starting on the rockers and in every joint where the panels come together. It's definitely more than what rust converter will stop. Also the rear brake line junction is looking thin (the one that's been recalled twice but they won't replace the lines unless they actually leak). Honestly I blame New Hampshire, they switched to a some kind of liquid salt road treatment that's like 2x as corrosive as usual road salt. I'd rather they stop with the salt and just create/enforce snow tire laws, but I guess that would be hard on low-income people who drive around on mismatched used tires as it is.
>>
>>17026422
I did whiteline alloy end links all around and an OEM second gen Outback rear sway bar from a junkyard, it's 2mm larger. Really woke it up, plus putting in 02 WRX seats helped a lot too. So comfy.
>>
>>17026589
That's shitty. I also had my rockers rust out at the rear jack points from New Hampshire roads which wasn't cheap to get fixed. I'm pretty lucky that the guy who originally bought the car had a really nice undercoating done so the only other rust I have on the body is the typical Subaru rear quarter panel bubbling.

They really should switch to using beat juice mixes. It's cheaper, more effective, sticks to the road better, non-corrosive, and environmentally friendly. Minnesota switched to it because they needed to get rid of beet byproducts and it worked out great for them.
>>
>>17026674
Yeah I'll be doing endlinks and an adjustable whiteline 22mm rear bar. Might do some strut tower braces too but we'll see how it rides after the sway bars.

Haven't thought about seats just yet, but the WRX seats sound pretty cool

The inner skin of the hood is right behind the dent, hitting it wouldn't affect it at all. It's not just a flat panel, you know. The body shop took one look at it and the buckled part in the corner and said it wasn't repairable, and I agree with them.
>>
>>17027407

Their whole thing is paintless dent repair. If they can pop it back into shape it won't have to be painted. I'd at least call around and see because it could end up saving you several hundred dollars.

>Just spent $80 on exhaust gaskets alone and still have to order one for the crossover pipe to exhaust mani ($10, special order only available from dealer).
>My front pass axle has no boot on it, my outer tierod boots are split (probably jobs for next weekend), my shifter has 5 inches of play in gear side to side, and my motor is moving around too much (prob mounts)

I don't need a running car over the weekend at all.

On that note, don't bitch about any job on a Subaru until you have to change the up pipe, remove the turbo, or mess with the turbo inlet.

I find mine pretty neato but my last car was a first gen focus. It's nice to beat out the higher power RWD dudebros at the lights when it's wet, but you can get that from almost any AWD car. Nice and spacious inside without being huge outside. Thick bumper makes it look more like an SUV than I'd like but whatever

Ahh yes, Subaru... the brand of choice for people that think AWD matters in the context of their driving as they go to the grocery store under the speed limit in the rain.

"Boxer engines are so cool and totally not a gimmick that Subaru is stuck with" the white suburban male did parrot, having never worked on his car beyond doing an oil change and maybe brake pads.

"I want something factory fast as I pick my child up from school. Yeah sometimes I drive 80mph on the highway because I like to live dangerously. I hate when ppl are only going 75 in the left lane though to be fair they probably don't see me coming."

Do what you want looks wise, dont let a bunch of neckbeards or vaping memelords on a Vietnamese image board modify your car for you.

For learning how to wrench, read a lot of fourm posts on NAISOC, watch a lot of videos on youtube, find a buddy with experience to help you out. If you dont understand something dont be afraid to ask stupid questions

Changing wheels and exhaust is a good start to chage a lot, without changing much. Look for a nice catback, but in the end it is only a stock WRX, if you get sucked into modifying, dont forget that it would almost work out cheaper to sell the WRX and buy an STI if you start chasing power

The only thing I found that would not make it past Burnieland inspections was a hole in the exhaust.

Doing 3 x drain & fills on the transmission did not help make it any smoother. Still bucks and flares like a sonuva in the winter until it is warmed up. Kek front end looks just like a prelude and rear looks like old Nissan sentry or some shit. Saw an old beat up one with no badges and didn't know what I was seeing

Just got Defi gauges for my 04 S-vape-Ti. EGT, BOOOOOST, and Oil Pressure. What is the best way to get the wiring from the engine bay into the cabin? Also why is everyone on forums so fucking retarded when it comes to drilling the EGT hole?

No idea and I doubt it. Though, the headgaskets are a lot cleaner looking than the head and block so that might be a sliver of a good sign.

After I changed the oil that's been in that fucker for about three years, it turned into one of the quietest boxers I've ever heard besides the exhaust leak.

I'll pop off the timing cover, the crank pulley looks a bit sketchy to me.
