1) those are the kinds of bikes sport bikes stemmed from. Fairings weren't a thing on a large scale until the '85 zx/gpz's came out and were accepted more than other fairing'd bikes before it (as far as production).

Clip ons aren't new, obviously, neither is a forward riding position, but cruisers are just as agile in most cases, being I'm sure you aren't tracking if you don't have basic respect for all kinds of bikes (but fuck scooters, right?)

Kind of just a bad habit, I'd be accelerating out of corners and still have 1 finger over the brake lever like this.

Pretty sure it's that based on how unnatural his position is. It looks like he's struggling not to fall down. When you're leaned like that while actually riding, the cornering forces push you into the seat so it takes no effort to stay on.

When road riding, what kind of lines do you take? I generally shoot for a late apex (sometimes way too late), especially around blind corners or unknown roads. Do you normally do that or try to apex more at the center?

There is almost no time on the road I will not use a late apex, I generally aim to be all the way on the inside of the corner by the exit so I have the entire lane as runoff or buffer if I need it.

If the next corner is the opposite direction then hey, you're already at the right part of the lane as well.
>>
>>17021387

>>17021249
Alright, I've got an fjr1300 which falls into the same category as the st1300 in your picture.

To start, they're just as fun to "rip" through gears on and to do aggressive cornering with, it's not like you can't go fast with 130-150HP. They're for the people who want to enjoy the sensations and fun associated with 2 wheels, but also want an element of comfort. Think of it like a Cadillac CTS, fast yet also comfy.

Imo a goldwing is comfier than most shit box cars, so there's that i guess. See below as well.

>>17021373
Agreed, I had the chance to do a trip on my dads 2002 goldwing, the thing handled really well, all of the weight being down below your knees gives you a huge amount of confidence while you're riding. It's only really when you come to a stop that they reveal their weight.

I know. That's why I said it's too narrow. You always want to late apex because early apexing a public corner on a sport bike is like asking to die.

Thank you for the analogy, I've driven a CTS-V, makes sense. If that's truly the case, then my only gripe would be the aesthetics, but I totally concede that it's individual preference. it is not obvious from that webm but although the S model has the clipons mounted on the bottom they have significant risers inbuilt into them, 1.5 -2 inches easily.

The SV is quite neutral positionwise for a clip on bike, it has a very roomy cockpit and nice comfortable rear pegs and what not, it's actually a little too comfy for what I'm mainly using it for now as I ran out of clearance on track and with the raised rearsets the nice comfortable 31.5 inch seat height means my legs are folded up like pretzels.

XR650 a damn good. DR650 is second. KLR650 I'd rate a close third. All are gud bieks. Put an improved carb on the DR650, do the airbox mod, and get a good exhaust and it'll more or less equal the XR650. You can also go full retard if you have $$$ and get 60-some HP out of it with a certain couple of modifications. 790cc, cam, headwork.

What does that have to do with it? That's almost an argument in it's favor honestly. The aftermarket is there, the parts are there, it's incredibly well proven.

>it's pretty common knowledge that DR>XR>KLR

The KLR is just a different kind of bike, it almost doesn't belong in the comparison. DR vs. XR? Personal preference ultimately, but the XR just has it's own brand of magic where the DR is pretty generic.

I was up Reecer creek road 2 days ago (not on a bike) and have been in the clockums as of last week. There is still snow at fairly low elevations. It snowed on Snoqualmie today (didn't stick to road but added to the snow still on the hills) on my way over to the west side to get my bike.

I know of guys who are going snowmobiling tomorrow.... soooo I wouldn't plan on riding the hills anytime soon.

>>17021597
No, this was in New Mexico. CC81PT and I met his wife for dinner one evening and decided to take a trail that went behind one of the big runoff basin walls. It hadn't rained in a couple of weeks so we figured it was dry. Nope. We hit the first patch of mud (which is what caused most of that) at about 35 or 40 MPH. The dry and mildly-muddy sections were OK. There were legitimate bogs along the way that got me 10/10 mad a few times, though. I rode it from Las Cruces all the way back to the north side of Alamogordo like that. The Gestapo (aka Border Patrol) dudes gave me funny looks, but didn't hassle me since I'm a skinny white bastard and was wearing my dorky ADVgear.

What tires do you have on your AT. I am going to southern Idaho/Montana tomorrow. Gonna be there a week. The dealer recommended MEFO super explorers for wear as they were sure I'd kill a set of TKs just doing the trip. Don't know if I'm bringing the bike as I couldn't get a dealer to work on my bike over there on my timeline and I will exceed the 600 mile first tuneup. Round trip I'm looking at 1000 miles and I put 70 on today. The guys I bought it from said they can't recommend it but besides chain tension they said it wouldn't kill the bike. Still up in the air as to if I ride. Best case I do 800 miles and do 200 by car as I will have access to a car half way there.

Fucking decisions. Really want to ride this thing. Don't want to leave it at home for a week or so after just getting it.

Honestly I fucking love electric start. I'm 5'10 ~160lb so kicking these big singles over would be hell for me too.

The only bike that I would trade my 650L for is an XR650R, but Honda discontinued it and the kits for fitting an e-start to it are also discontinued. I've looked at the KTM 690, but I hear too many stories about it breaking and my XR has been unreal fucking reliable.

Funny you should mention it. I actually got fucking buried in the mud trying to get back out to the road after it thunderstormed alll.fucking.night the day I took this pic. shinko 805 rear and a karoo 3 front.
i like both of them pretty good, the karoo does great on the service roads, moderate mud, dirt and loose gravel, and roads havent had it on sand but im not holding out hope.
the shinko i havent gotten much time on yet but it makes it so much easier to work with off the pavement and tracks really well.
ive heard a lot of good stuff about the super explorers, may also look at the motoz tractionator ADV tires everyone seems to love them or mitas e07 if a lot of mud isnt on the plan

as for the 600 mile tuneup, do it yourself, its just a once over and an oil change, follow the book and it takes an hour or two, bring oil of your choice and a filter and find a place that will let you do it on the way over.
>>
>>17021664

The electric start kits WERE the aftermarket solutions. Once Honda discontinued the bike the aftermarket just started to disappear. Used to be you could get frame sliders, electric start kits, oil coolers, all kinds of goodies for the R. Now your best bet is to find someone selling one that's already been tricked out.

I'll slap an exhaust on it this year probably. Once the top end goes I'm going to bump the compression up and put a 670 piston in it, maybe a better carb.

If that's not enough, I'll have to take a real hard look at a the KTM690 despite reported reliability issues. I'm really wary about buying a discontinued bike because of parts availability.

How much of a pain in the ass is it to get liscensed?

I don't really want tos it in an 8 hour course. I'm an MD, and no offense, I can read the book and retain all the info and pass that test in about 30 minutes, I don't need 8 hours to learn how a clutch works.

Can you do these things online/independant or is a classroom necessary? Can you get a permit and learn on your own or is there always a riding exam?

I've opened up the airbox and done "Dave's Mods" on the carb. I'm running a 155 main jet and a 50 pilot jet right now. Seems pretty good. My gas mileage fluctuates wildly depending on how I'm riding. Avg. elevation ~2500ft, but I've had it down to sea level and as high as ~14,000 without any problem.

It's a star custom, It was brand new 2 years ago.
>>
>>17021774
You did sound a little condescending, yeah, but I get it. Look up the Motorcycle Safety Foundation website and select the Basic Rider's Course. The actual classroom time for mine was less than three hours, and that included waiting on a late person, the sign-in, book work, etc. I had a fairly small class, though. They'll provide bikes for everyone. As for gear, they want you to have your own helmet, gloves, good jeans, a long-sleeved heavy shirt or similar, and sturdy over-the-ankle boots (combat boots or work boots are the usual).
>>
>>17021745

>>17021745

In every state I've lived in there is always a riding exam.

You get the book, take a short multiple choice test to get your permit, then take a riding test to get your license.

Or you take the course and do all the same shit with additional practical instruction and get a waiver that you take to the motor vehicle department and they issue you a new license with the proper endorsement.

I did it without the class, my wife took the class. Then again, I started riding at 13 on dirtbikes so it's probably a good idea for a new rider.
>>
>>17021774
also full MSF classes often supply bikes you just bring your own gear, its a fairly commitment free way to test the waters for new riders, if you know how to ride its good for a few laughs at others expense when they inevitably fall over
>>
>>17021749
I didn't even consider the possibility the brown shit on the header of my street bike could just be baked on mud from all the shit I rode through and not rust. It seems like that would make more sense.

if you dont do the class in WA you just go to the dmv and take a written and then schedule a ride test if they cant do it right then
if you take the class, at the end you get a cert of completion you take to the dmv and they will issue you the new license on the spot
>>
>>17021825
That's how it seems like it works in my state.

I can get a learner's permit after I pass written and then I can ride for a year with a helmet and gear and take a riding test after the year for a full license.

Would that be a better choice?
>>
>>17021825
We had one kind of cocky kid who'd been riding motocross since he was 6 or so; one of the field instructors knew him so they'd talk smack from time to time. Pretty funny. The others were mostly dudes from the Air Force base, the old guy, and one 18 or 19 year old girl. The bikes that everyone said they wanted ran the full range from dual-sports to sport bikes to cruisers. Nobody really had an attitude or ego besides the kid. The girl lacked confidence, but she did OK and her dad showed up the afternoon of the first practice day on his monstrous old Harley, put her on the back, and rode her around the different exercise areas to show her that it's all about looking where you want to go, a little back brake, and clutch/throttle control. The physics are the same between a 280 pound minicruiser to a 700+ continent crosser.

Weaving at speed, yes. Lane splitting properly, not really. Moving through stopped traffic, little risk unless the car driver tries to cut off the motorcyclist suddenly.

tl;dr: lanesplitting is fine but doing it poorly is asking for a rekting

Take a few minutes to examine WHY you're having so many close calls. If you're having close calls because you're driving recklessly or too fast or otherwise doing stupid shit, do less of those things. If you're having close calls because other drivers in your area are professional fuckwits, plan and assume accordingly; remember that on a motorcycle you're invisible and everyone is trying to kill you especially if they're not trying to.

I've only had a handful of close calls in the 8 years I've been riding but there's been the POTENTIAL for quite a lot more; I ride under the rightful assumption that drivers in my city are a cavalcade of fuckups and read/predict traffic to keep myself safe. At this point there's an almost zen-like quality to my paranoia.
>>17022348

no, sportsbikes stemmed from race bikes, which is what cafe racers were emulating in the first place, the gsx-r750 was basically a street legal XR69 endurance racer.

Most race bikes of that era were privately built with very few exceptions. All that was decades before GSXRs etc which are very recent history. Their immediate predecessors were Dunstall and Seeley-framed specials whose aftermarket chassis performed better than the horrid late 1960s thru early 1980s factory frames.

Dustbin fairings in pic related were rare and later banned because they are dangerously sensitive to crosswinds. Fine for salt flat racing though.

Only half right. Cafe racers definitely proved there was a market, but I don't think anyone was dragging engine swapped nortons to their factory to base future designs off of. That honor was reserved for the actual race bikes.

And modern cafe racers are just low performance standards with pod filters and taped over headlights so you know someone is going to be offended by your post
