Probably need to rotate the CAS 180 degrees, check if the block is earthed to the firewall too.
>>

It's nice anon. I always liked darker cars with the tan interior.
>>

i didnt try rotating the cas, thats a good idea. its earthed, there are two ground wires i made sure i put back on when i put everything back together.

You mean bumper removal?
>>
>>17015221
I'd say yes, but that's a matter of taste. I prefer when the edges are left in. Throw a diffuser and wing though and it would look badass.
>>
>>17015259
You can just unbolt the tie downs if IIRC, you can bolt on a proper tow hook to the same location and be track legal for most stuff too

First time using heat wrap, since I am still waiting for the correct starter to be sent to me, why not poke around with the boltons, like getting heat out of my fuckin cabin.

Was going to do the header, but there's a crack in the collector and it would probably explode before I could splash out on importing a racing beat one. Fucking NZ.

If there's no risk of rust developing (eg clear coat is fucked) you can get away with it. If you live anywhere with salted roads though, lift the car, strip it properly, clan out any rust, and POR15 the fucker. You'll instantly have made any maintenance you'll do on the car a million times easier

>>17015417
I feel your pain, outside of the states importing auto stuff is stupid expensive. How long ago did you wrap it? Any noticeable improvement? You do know you're supposed to paint over the wrap with special paint right?
>>
>>17015486
The clear coat is fucked, and the red paint is faded to hell even though the car only has 70k miles.

I live in a salt state, but I don't drive it during the winter.
>>
>>17015361

does anyone know what this particular seal is called? It's on the top frame and I'm having trouble finding it in parts diagrams. I can find the ones that seal the window to the top but not the ones that seal the top to itself.
>>
>>17015486
Just last week but as my car
>>17015319
Is still on stilts, haven't tried it yet.
My logic is that if it burns out in a few months, I get to buy a nice new one. Never read anywhere (never searched) about the finishing spray - only that it tends to habour moisture, so I halfassed that with some high temp VHT in the hopes it would help against corrosion.

http://www.heatshieldproducts.co.nz/lava-exhaust-wrap.html
I'd love some RPF1's, but even with the companies 40% UPS discount, it's still going to cost me $700 in postage alone. Companies here want $400 per wheel, so it's only slightly cheaper to import. Fug.
>>
>>17015502
\O_o/
Electrics aren't my forte. Are you getting spark to 3 plugs, just 2 or none? If the CAS is out, it will be sparking at BDC (Unless all 4 spark at the same time regardless of cylinder, then two will fire I think). Go ahead and blast all the connections with some contact cleaner anyway

Is that the part that's always showing on the softtops?
>>
>>17015495
I knew it was red, for some reason the clear on every red miata I know gets fucked real easy. It's worth a respray if you care about looks, you could probably get the job done with some automotive clear in a spray can, a garage, and a weekend though. You should get a pretty decent result if you're careful.
>>17015502
Either a bad coil, or a bad connection to the coil. Did you check for spark using multiple wires and spark plugs though? What I usually do is pull a plug, disconnect the fuel pump and crank the car a couple of times to check spark. Then I use a different cable and plug just to make sure.
>>17015504
Do you mean the window seal itself? Or the seal that goes between the top itself and the top frame?
>>17015513
Yeah, from what I understand it's just high temp spraypaint, but without it it can rust really bad. Shipping's ridiculous over here in the tropics too. I wanted to get a timing belt, water pump, front and rear seals, CAS seal, cam seals, and pulleys over here and I'd be paying around $40 just for the shipping, plus nearly $120 in taxes.
>>
>>17015535
none as far as im aware. ill clean everything tomorrow just to be sure
>>17015547
ill do this tomorrow as well, didnt think about disconnecting the fuel pump.
>>
>>17015551
Yeah disconnecting the pump is just so the car doesn't start with a missing plug.

Those parts would run me up over $350 here. Word of advice though, don't get the Mazda CAS oring, get some Viton seals with the same dimensions. The CAS oring turns rock hard after a year and leaks again.
>>

well i did it without the fuel pump disconnect on all with the same spark plug and it didnt spark on any so idk if i just used a bad plug or theres no spark.

I got mine off ebay. As long as you get one that is from a decent enough seller and is around $100 a seat, it'll probably be ok. Here's mine for reference. Fit and finish is not great on the cloth, but it works and is solidly built
>>17015568
Thanks for the tip, I was planning on getting the FM kit for it, I'll email them and check what o ring they use. Taxes here are around 54% for auto shit, so that estimate was ballpark really.
>>
>>17015572
Keep crossing off variables and moving down the chain. That's about the end of my knowledge.
>>
>>17015572
If no spark on any, try buying a new plug and testing, then get some wires, which you probably should repace anyways. If neither of these help, check the connection for the distributor with a voltmeter. If all of it fails, replace the distributor. You could also convert to coil-on-plug, but that's a bit more involved. It'll save you dosh though since if any of the coils fail, you can replace them individually. I think it uses coils off a corolla or something, so cheap too.
>>
>>17015649
>>17015649
What kind of brackets and rails are you running on yours?
>>

>>
>>17015547
The seal that goes between the top and the top frame. The one with the little strip of foam on it.

There are an outer and inner seal for the window/top junction, as well as a bracket that holds those seals, but the one I'm looking at replacing looks like it's part of the top assembly. I can't find it's part number.

Guy I'm buying Miat from says he didn't put tension cables in the new soft top. How hard/annoying is it about to be to fix this? How imperative are tension cables? I live in a rainy city so if it guarantees leak problems I'd like to know.

Also how hard is fixing the emergency break assembly inside of the Miat? Dude said he pulled the e brake and the button just like flew out. It seems pretty simple to fix though.

Also Miat is 1994. if that matters. NA8.
>>
>>17015744
so would i have to take all my spark plugs out for this? this is a cool thing but my spark plugs are seized in and im worried they might not come out
>>
>>17015785
Then you'll have to address it eventually.
If you can't get them out by soaking them in some kind of penetration lubricant.

Next time you're ever dealing with these kinds of parts, put a tiny bit of anti-seize, copper or whatever on the thread.
>>
>>17015785
Technically you don't have to take them out, it's just the 'caps' that come off.
>>
>>17015838
i put a liberal amount of anti seize on the thread, but for some reason they still wont budge. i dont think i torqued them in too hard, or at least i hope i didnt.
>>

For the seat mounting to the floor I fabbed up some brackets with 3/16" steel bar, side mounts came with the seat and are made of steel as well. No rails since they would lift me too far up. Here's a pic. After this I just painted the bar so it wouldn't rust and they work fine. I'm planning on adding some additional reinforcement with a couple of bars to box it in, but so far it's been fine.
>>17015728
Sorry, but I have no idea where you could find that seal. Maybe you could use some random rubber or something to replicate it?

How much have you guys spent on your miatas?

im looking to buy a 04/05 in good condition and thinking of spending about 9-10k.
>>
>>17015967
paid $3000 for my 97 with 70k miles...came with a hard top too
>>
>>17015967
NZ, 1990 140k's $4k.
Hardtop later, 10th anniversary w/ heated glass $1500. Other than a complete engine rebuild, just tyres (IMO best upgrade regardless of model).
>>
>>17015974
I know that the sellers over price the fuck out of these cars. How much should I be asking for if my only condition is relatively low mileage (maybe under 100k) with one owner for an NB miata?
>>
>>17015988
If you're looking for a one owner car, expect to be looking for a while. As long as the car is low mileage, and is in good nick, expect to pay around $2-3k for a serviceable NB. If you want one with a hardtop, LSD and VVT expect more like $4-5k. And if on top of that you want one that's absolutely spotless, 1 owner, and up to date on maintenance you're looking at $5-7k. A $4k miata will serve you well, be low mileage enough (60-80k) and you'll be glad you saved the money
>>
Hey guys I'm needing help

The Miata I'm in has two straps going over the plastic window (from the interior), and it makes zipping it kinda annoying

I accidentally broke one of them, but the top itself still feels normal after poking around and such

Did I fuck up, /o/? If so how do I just straight up remove the straps (without removing the entire top) because it pisses me off and it makes putting down the plastic window kinda annoying

thank

>>
>>17016256
It's very nice, and has all the extras (LSD, etc...), but I'd pay about $6-7k for it. $7k at most. It's on the newer side and has the matching hardtop, but it's still a miata at the end of the day. It's a dealer, so they'll charge above market value usually. If you're set on that one though, offer $6k and go from there. It's also a PA car so check for rust.

It's a girl car -- that is, it's overtly feminine in styling and mechanical personality, not necessarily a girl's car. Anyone capable of driving a Miata at its limit can consider themselves a competent driver regardless of their personal equipment.

Cars designed with women in mind tend to be more practical, roomier and featureful, with more predictable handling, such as the Eclipse and Celica/tC. FWD, front heavy, good in the snow and wet, etc. The Miata takes some effort and skill to drive in bad conditions. Someone used to FWD (or thinks the Miata is) will easily spin or crash, especially those equipped with the LSD.
At least two people have asked me if my NB is FWD since I bought it, so there is ignorance out there, but at least those two know what a drivetrain is.

Automatic Miats are totally chick cars though, no excuse to own one of those unless you're so tall you can't use the clutch without hitting the steering wheel, at which point why the fuck are you trying to fit in a Miata?
>>
>>17017621
I got a great opportunity to test drive a low-mileage NA 1.6 and a new ND RF in the same day. I've also tested the 124 Abarth. They all drive very similarly, even the gearboxes have a similar feel, but the ND feels noticably smaller than the 124 externally and the cockpit feels bigger than the NA. The RF version has fucktons of room (comparatively) and it would have more if it were not for the notchback placement of the rear window. The 124's gearbox has the best gunbolt feeling.

Handling-wise, I can't say I really gave 'em a good drive, but what I did get is the feeling that the ND is intended to drive and feel almost exactly like an NA. It was actually pretty interesting to drive a decent selection of Miatas of various years and have them all basically behave identically to each other.

Grab some relatively light ones, no biggie, it's just more susceptible to unsprung mass than other cars.

So after swapping in my new alternator and doing a coolant flush, I am worried my cooling system isn't working. I filled up the radiator and let the car sit overnight, ran it a few times, and it still hasn't sucked any fluid into the overflow container.

I also took it for a quick spin on slightly low oil (I only had about 3.0 quarts in there) and I noticed the thermostat jumped to hot once I parked and idled it and the fans instantly kicked on

So I wonder if my thermostat is broken or something. I just don't want to drive around while this thing is boiling itself alive. Are the radiator hoses and the hood supporting bar supposed to be too hot to touch after a hard toogay on a summer day? (80F)
>>
>>17030499
Of course they are, shit gets really hot in that engine bay. Throw in a new thermostat if you'd like, it's not a hard job. Did you properly bleed the cooling system? You're supposed to fill up the rad, and run the car while continuing to fill it up, until you can't fill it any further. Also make sure to run the heater while you do it so you get any bubbles out. After you do all that, then you fill up the overflow to the max line and you're done.

I've got a weird idle problem, not sure if anyone here may know what it is. My car is idling at about 1500 RPM at full temperature, but only when in neutral. As soon as I put it in gear and hold the clutch it idles where it should. I put the car in diagnostic mode and made sure it idles correctly at 850 RPM, and it does. I cleaned the throttle body, and sprayed TB cleaner around the vacuum lines as the car was running and no change in idle. Is there some connector I'm missing that's causing this? Given that in Diag mode everything works.

>>
>>17029857
The only reason for a stock airbag module to flash like that is if there is a short in the airbag. You either fucked something up or it just broke from old age or something (but I've never heard of it happening). The way for it to work like stock is to put working stock parts back in. If it is indeed the airbag that's shorted then take a multimeter and see how far back the short goes.

Honestly the first thing you should do is just take the airbag out of the steering wheel and see if it's even connected underneath.

This problem isn't specific to miatas, BUT i'm experiencing slight understeer when going into corners hard. I'm giving it gas when taking a slight hairpin and tires are squealing and I can feel the car ever so slightly start to understeer. Is it possible my driving technique is off or is there nothing I can do about a little understeer? Tires are good and it's an '01 ls so it has the bracing in the front and underside.
>>
>>17032832
you can also just try to do a donut on dirt or wet pavement
or throw it into a turn off-throttle so it starts to understeer, then observing the reaction when you accelerate at the apex. If it understeers more, you have an open diff. If you notice the back end step in line and the car turns harder, you have an LSD. This is assuming stock alignment.

With the donut test, open diff will just drive in a circle spinning a wheel. Once the outside tire gets loaded, the inner wheel will just spin. LSD will very easily pivot about its front wheels and continue to do so until you steer it straight.
Doing a straight burnout is not a good indicator because even the open diff can spin both wheels if they both lose traction at the same time and speed.

NA miatas have a reputation for having a funky 2nd gear. it often gets misinterpreted as just a damaged gear but for some reason 2nd gear isn't as smooth as the rest. I think it actually has something to do with the motor mounts or vibrations from the motor being more significant in 1st gear hence why the other gears are easier and this also explains why downshifting into 2nd usually isn't an issue at all.

tl;dr common problem. don't sperg out. i test drove 2 NAs and both had it. if you have an earlier year NB, it might still have it. NC and beyond, idk
>>
>>17033162
I have a '99, it understeers like you describe, but mine has the Torsen, so when I step on the gas at the apex I get oversteer instead. Yours might be open diff based on how you describe the exit behavior, but you can get better handling performance with a custom alignment either way.

https://www.flyinmiata.com/tech/alignment.php

You can also adjust your driving technique, try braking as deep as you can into the corner, releasing the brake just as you're about to turn in, and late-apexing the corner. That'll make sure your rear tires are pointed as straight as possible when you hit the gas and you won't be wasting engine power understeering.

is there a list somewhere that shows you which miatas have LSD and which ones have no LSD? im looking at NB miatas and from what i understand all the LS miatas have LSD, correct?
>>
>>17033227
>>17029396
The 1-2 shift on the 5-speeds has a deliberately-engineered metallic clanking noise. It's part of the British roadster meme package standard on all Miatas.
Trying to shift slowly or gently to avoid the noise will just induce lurching. Be about 4-5000 RPM in 1st, pull the shifter with some guts, *ping*, clutch out smoothly, no lurch.
>>
>>17033264
you know some people modify their car right?

my '91 has a torsen diff.

If I just googled it'll tell me it doesnt.
>>
>>17033292
>clanking noise

Literally no idea what that is supposed to mean. I've never heard a clanking noise. I'll try your suggestion though
>>
>>17033294
well i mean from factory. which NBs come with that option
>>
>>17033264
With NB1s, regardless of trim level, if it has leather, the retractable antenna and a manual transmission, it should have an LSD, because those options were part of a package.
With NB2s, based on cursory internets research, you're right, the LS package came with an LSD as well.

>drive countless times on a mountain road with an econobox
>drive on the same road with my 90hp stock as hell miat
>have 100 times more fun while covering the trip for the same time

Now i am convinced. I could have been faster if the road wasnt wet and at night. But still the point remains.

Fug, I was worrying over nothing. Second on mine is sometimes difficult to get into, and first and second always do that metallic ping sound. I like it.

I believe 14s. I only actually looked at the tires desu. One said "14 1/2 inches" on them. But I'm using three different tires so I honestly have no idea. Next weekend I'm getting the battery, tires, and title sorted out. Gonna hurt, but this is going to [hopefully] be the only big expense for a long long time.
>>
>>17033635
If you can get a set of the 15" NB wheels the BF Goodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2s in 195/50R15 are pretty great. I just installed a new set on my NA6 last week.

With the stock 14" wheels you're pretty much limited to Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Specs, which are much more expensive.
>>
Thoughts on taking off original paint?

My 90 still has factory paint, but it looks like trash.

Deep scratches, scuffs, a few bubble spots that need to be addressed.

Just want to make sure it's not sacrilege to be the one that removes factory paint
>>
>>17034123
If the paint really is crap, then yeah, go for it. I removed the factory paint on my M edition, kinda had to.
>>
>>17034097

Can I not run 195s on the 14 inch wheels?

Also I'm not trying to get super high performance tires. No plans for autocrossing or tracking or anything. Just some good tires for cruising and spirited driving. Open to suggestions.
>>
I'm getting a 99 and was wondering a few things
1.I know that most stock seats are much heavier than aftermarket seats so what ones would yall recommend for someone who is 6'2 and just barely fits
2. I'm looking to install a turbo on it, and the last owner already has a cold air intake should/ can I keep it and I've heard you can get full kits for fairly cheep on eBay or should I take it to a shop and have them charge me up the ass?
>>
Have 3100 saved up, only a few more paychecks before I can buy a NA Miata. Hoping for a 94-95 with a hardtop. Anyone have any examples of what they paid for their 1.8?
>>
>>17034190
If you can find 195s for a 14" wheel at all your selection will be pretty limited. The 15" wheels have a much wider range of options.
>>
If the previous owner had a hard dog installed, do I have to worry about damage from the previous installation, or will it basically be a plug and play mod at this point?
>>
Why do people say the miata has a wet noodle chassis while simultaneously maintaining that it's the best handling car ever?
>>
>>17034509
1.8 is more expensive than the 1.6 by several K usually but you can snipe a good deal if you look hard enough.
>>
>>17034667
Literally no one says that. The closest you'll come is when people are discussing the early year NAs which often require some chassis reinforcement for added ridgity

>>17034580
Did he take it out before selling it to you? All the holes will be drilled for it and cuts to the chassis will be made so basically yes but you'll need the backing plates if he took those too
>>
>>17034123
It's not a classic 911, no one will care about a respray unless it's done badly.
>>
>>17034494
I'm a 6"1 guy but pretty thin and I got some Bride Vios 3 reps and I fit in there snug but well. Seat selection is kinda limited b/c the seat needs to be pretty narrow to fit in between the tunnel without touching the door. Check out Sparco Sprint V, I heard they're a little wider.

You can keep the intake if you'd like, but don't get an ebay turbo kit, they are trash that will blow up and ruin your whole engine. You can get stuff like the intercooler, intake piping, silicon joiners, etc, from ebay, just make sure to get a brand name turbo like a garret or something, and a good manifold from FM or custom.
>>
>>17035131
Nah ebay turbos are a great value. $100 for a turbo. Even if it does break down the line, pick another one up for $100. BoostedBoiz youtube run an ebay turbo on their 600hp h22 civic and it hasn't broke in my several months of watching them.
>>
>>17035223
The thing is it's a lottery. Some turbos will be fine, others will have enough play in the shaft to make them explode within hours. The real issue is that if you blow up a turbo, your engine is probably gonna get fucked.
IIRC the BEGi guys offer one chinese turbo that they've found works fine as long as you aren't pushing too much boost. Personally, I'd rather take a TD04 or something off a junkyard subaru and pay the same as a new china turbo, but at least know I'll have a solid system that I could rebuild if it came to it.
>>
How is a Miata for a first car? Is it worth getting the 60hp model and then upgrading it along the way? I'll get my license soon and really like the Miata, but Italian regulations force you to use a sub 90hp car for the first year, and I haven't seen any 90hp Miatas
>>
>>17035303
It's a great first car, but idk about sub 90hp. The early 1.6 miatas had about 90whp, but they were advertised to have like 110 I believe. Don't know how strict regs are over there though.
Why not get a shitbox for your first year though so you can get used to driving though? Even if miatas are great first cars, it's a good idea to get some driving experience before hand, mostly for stuff like reading traffic and the like.
>>
>>17035323
I'll follow your advice then, regulations are quite strict, if you get caught with a car above 90hp you face some pretty high fines. Thanks anon!
>>
>>17035330
No problem! Personally if I was you I'd get an old cinquecento for fun and lupin the third fantasies, but I understand that it's a pain in the ass to find a good one.

NA's the cheapest and probably the most sought after just because of the aftermarket support and flip ups.

Well it doesn't sound like you can help me much with my problem but just so you know, the airbag moduals going bad is very common. Apparently there was a capacitor that commonly fails and leaks something or another and fucks them up. OEM replacements are rare and stupid expensive. like 500-700. There was a guy on ebay who rebuilt them but he doesn't seem to do it anymore.

installed RoadsterSport RACE exhaust, front and rear sway bars from Progress on the red car (mine)
Moe fang got stiffer, lower springs.

the bars did wonders for the body roll, the rear rotates nice now. exhaust doesn't drone much, sounds nice on throttle. the only issue is that I was off 1 spline when reassembling the steering rack, so the steering wheel is now off center and it hurts my OCD
