Looking at a 1999 4runner with 240k and an eLocker. I think it's a highlander trim but am unsure. Has the paperwork for the timing belt and water pump that was recently done.

What sort of price should I be looking it? It's listed for 5k
>>
>>17002280
Whatever you want to pay for it. As a 4x4, it's worth about $2500. Memelord Toyota tax makes it "worth" $3500-4500.

I love dirt everyday, Fred is awesome and doesn't really care about anything. Great host.
>>
>>17002280
That is about the same price as where I live in the South East. But my specific city and area has a huge markup on Toyota trucks and 4Runners for some reason. You can drive an hour in any direction and save 25%. I would try and get is closer to 4k.
>>
>>17002280
Better get a Suburban with a Ford front end and a 20mpg 350 small block for $1500
>>
>>17002320
I honestly cannot figure that dude out. he's got a shop that I would call modest at best but somehow he can throw all that money at that LSA swapped army truck on 37s, that Tubesock Jeep with front and rear Curries, armor, multiple sets of wheels and tires. and those 54s he put on that Ford retail for almost $1000 a piece. I wonder if some producers started throwing money at his show or he's really just a modest dude.
>>
>>17002457
Motortrend are sponsored by maxxis or tyre rack or something, so they probably get free or discounted tyres. In one of the DED extras one of his friends talks about his shop a little, so I think he does pretty well overall.

235/85R16?
Aiming for this size for the Montero for the next set of tyres. Or if a wild card set of 255/85R16 happens to turn up...
I really like the way skinny tyres work in the bush.
>>
>>17003013
Nah 245/75/16, so about an inch smaller.

I was very very close to 255/85s, the extra $80 per corner was enough to put me off, also lacking a turbo i was worried about losing what little available line power i have

no they don't. unless they're 37s or someth
>>
>>17005608

Not that poster but unless you're running in deep bottomless mud all the time or slick rocks, skinny tires are objectively better.

Unless you need the width to compensate for something...
>>
>>17005608
What

Yes they do. unless you don't know what you're talkin bout
>>
>>17003076
Presuming it's a 5L (3 litre) diesel? You made the right choice not overcapitalising on the 33" 255s without gearing.
>>17005636
This. Bottomless dried out swamps are the exception.
>>17005608
Skinnies are great in mud, as not only there's less forward resistance, they cut down to a firm surface. The only real circumstance if come across where the cheese cutters come up short, is if you're trying to screw around in soft, dry, coarse sand with no body. Once you're moving though, they're not a drama.
>>
>>17005840
Yep 5L.
Sooo many people choose form over function with the old luxes, I'm happy because it looks capable (because it is) without looking like I got a little pecker.

If you're considering the 4runner from less than a decade ago, also consider the Tay Yoda FJ 60.

Mad comf. Plus it won't depreciate if you find one under $7000. It's depending on where you live, though.

If you live in a northern state or canada, it's found to be better and cheaper to import a left hand drive than it is to buy a second hand rust bucket. if you go more north, they could use gravel, though, so you could be safe.

those '08 4runners are also not a bad idea. or a nissan r51. if you ever think you're going to upgrade your offroad capabilities, consider the tay yoda FJ70. they come in a neat little troop carrier box, too and have a more solid suspension all around. that comes at the cost of comfytude, though.

I am not a toyota guy but I picked up an 05 4runner late last year and have been very pleased by it.

Just make sure you change all the fluids out when you get it, (including diff's and Transfer case)

Comfortable ride , plenty of space inside even when hauling people. Meh tier fuel mileage. I am running 10w40 mobil1 instead of the 5w30 oil and have been getting better mileage out of mine for some reason. Just let it idle for a bit more on startup and dont beat on it until it gets warm.

More pics, bls. How was the 10 days?

I've heard Ragnar Benson had mild success in the 80s / 90s recovering little chips of loose gold and platinum ore on the bottom of mineshafts. People would drop them because they would just opt for the larger pieces of rock instead. Apparently every kg of pebble would net him like 1-3 g of gold / platinum. It wasn't worth much back then but could be worth it wandering around today. Anyway, this is /out/ talk >>>/out/991788

>Only have experience with current gen
Current generation is the second generation IIRC. Second generation is 2005-present. They got a face lift and interior makeover somewhere near 2010 I think.

First generation was like 1999 to 2004 with the supercharged VG33's.

>they are awful
How so? Anything specific?

>Anything specific you're looking into?
Been wanting to buy a 4 door truck for a while. I've liked the 2011+ ecoboost F-150's but recently rented one for a road trip and it was just too big for something I would want to live with daily.

So looking at something smaller it pretty much comes down to the Colorado, Tacoma, and Frontier. I've always liked the way the Frontier looks and was wondering what you guys know about them. I know they ahve better frames than the Equivalent year Tacomas and are pretty much built on the same chassis/suspension as the Titans. The Frontier motors are also substantially stronger than the Tacomas year for year since 2005.

>Nissan hard body was better than taco and frontier.
I really have my head set on something with 4 doors to take camping but with a bed for hauling shit around. I also have dogs and want to be able to load them up and some guns/camping shit in the back of my truck to go out inna woods.

A 4x4 crew cab Frontier seems right up my alley.
>>
>>17015120
aftermarket support and a history of dependency that still goes into today. both are irrelevant when you're comparing the tacoma to the frontier.

second general nissan frontiers are great. cheaper alternative to the tacoma with little to no drawbacks besides being harder to find.

>>
>>17014938
>I don't care for anime, or American cartoons except family guy
But what about Dragon Ball or Rick and Morty?
>>
>>17015217
Essentially yes.

but you don't even have to connect them to the negative terminal on the battery, The battery negative terminal is grounded to the chassis. meaning you can ground whatever accessory you're installing to the chassis as well instead of running a wire back to the battery.

Run supply power from positive terminal on battery through a fuse just above the rated amps of the acessory you are installing, then through a switch installed in a convenient location in the truck, then to the positive power input on the light or whatever else you're installing.

Then run the negative from the light or whatever it is to a bolt attached to the chassis to complete the circuit. Boom, it works and now its protected from a short. And you have the ability to turn it on and off in the cabin. Get creative with where you're running the wires so it doesn't look like shit.

Or if you want to get fancy you can install a relay hooked to something that is already switched from the cabin like the headlights or the bed light. When this circuit is energised it will trip the relay then energize the lights you are installing.

Really easy and slick to wire a relay for offroad lights to your bed light. That way you keep all the aftermarket wiring out of the cabin and have a factory switch control your aftermarket offroad lights. Just have to be sure you don't leave your bed light on with the truck off for long periods because this kills the battery.

Make sure you fuse everything coming off the terminal to prevent shorts of fucking everything up.

Really what does it for me on these trucks is the round wheel arches and the refined front end.

Well technically they didn't D21, D22, etc. D23 only exists outside of North America like the Ranger.
However, the "facelifted" Navara / Frontier came out with a weird trim that just made the whole vehicle seem "Nissan" tacky.

Honestly, it was the first trucc I test drove after my I-5 Colorado and before the F-150, Ram, and older 1500 Silberado. So I discovered that I hated modern picc'em upp truccs by driving the Frontier for 2 weeks. Compared to the F-150 and modern Ram 1500, it's not actually THAT much worse. It just has that horrible modern Nissan aesthetic to it but is a good swap for what you mentioned to be a "smaller" full sized trucc. Its transmission is a bit fucky if you like to control your shifts when in automatic, though. So be a bit wary of that.

However, you may find more usage in a crew cab Colorado or Tacoma due to their larger aftermarket support (especially with the tacoma since you can get inboard winch, fog lights, etc whilst keeping their aesthetic).

The extended cab gives you the better option of a longer bed. Taynger's 6 ft bed gives us more than enough room to lay two people and I can keep a doggo, gun, tools, etc in the ext. cab without needing to mess around with stuff in the back.

I also drove the R52 monstrosity but we're not going to talk about that unibody mom-mobile...
>>
Off Road fags which do you think is the better vehicle, FJ Cruiser or Jeep Wrangler?
>>
>>17015287
Oh and it's worth noting that I wanted to find a Colorado crew cab before I settled with buying another extended cab small trucc.

I am quite glad I did because I would not have been able to survive some of those rocky trails I hit with ol' reliable Taynger had I found a 6ft bed Colorado crew cab.

I do miss the I-5 sounds at night, though.

They're not bed trucks. mechcanically they are pretty good. Only issues they have are the radiator and trans coolers are the same peice. Essentially the radiator was sealed at the bottom to create a seperate chamber to run trans cooolant through.

Some of these radiators have failed internally causing coolant to leak into the transmission fluid. This kills the transmission.

Solution is to get an aftermarket radiator or seal up and don't use the trans cooler portion of the radiator. Not sure how many trucks this affected but I would cure it myself if I got one as a preventative measure.

Posted too soon above.
Not bad trucks. Mechanically pretty good.

Was going to say the interior is pretty dated on them, especially pre-face lift.

But as bare bones utility vehicles with real truck frames and suspension they are good cheap alternatives to the Tacoma.

Some of them came with lockers out back, only the NISMO and PRO-4X. They came with a shorter version of the Titan axle.

The 6 speed 2wd trucks also came with this axle but no locker

The auto 4x4 (non-NISMO/Pro-4X) came with a weaker Nissan version of the dana 44

There were no 6 speed 4x4's.

Theya re based on the Titan chassis so Titan suspension bolts right up. People create cheap mid travel kits by swapping in wider Titan lower control arms and putting in coilovers with hoops. Pretty much the entire Titan front suspension aftermarket is easily adaptable to the Frontier.

Frontier front differentials are weaker than the Titan diffs and have a habit of popping when wheeled hard with big tires.
The Titan didfs also swap over. Need to swap axles though, which means you need the Titan lower contorl arm swap too due to axle length. Basically end up with an entire Titan front end, widr track and more travel when you go to the bigger diff. Or get custom axles made.

Problem with going Titan front diff is if you have a regular 4x4 (not a Nismo or Pro-4X) the front diff ratio doesn't match the rear on the Dana 44 clone. And aftermarket ratios are difficult to find for the D44 clone. So people just end up swapping Titan rear ends in too to get a matching gearing. May as well do a 64" sprung under leaf swap for long travel in the rear while you're in there.

>>
>>17015455

May as well do a 64" sprung under leaf swap for long travel in the rear while you're in there.

And to add to this if you go wider track front with Titan lower control arms you probably should look into glass fenders to make use of more up travel. And if you swap the stronger Titan front diff then you have to swap the stronger Titan rear diff (talking non-Nismo/Pro-4X here) to get matching ratios then you end up with wider track in the rear, and you probably sprung under to fit it to get the more up travel. So now you have to run glass bedsides.

So now your simple Frontier offroad project ended up with 3 inches wider track front and rear with entirely new suspension components front and rear and then you literally ripped half the body work to fit fiberglass fenders and bed sides then you had to paint your truck so you don't look like a fag now you have a pretty decent frontier 4x4 prerunner with ~16" of travel front and rear. maybe more.

Dont even get me started on coil bucket contact with the upper control arms or the transmission spline differences between transmissions.

You'll get 16" out of 63" leafs but you're not getting 16" out of double wishbone IFS just by swapping in the stock suspension from one shitty truck into a truck that was even shittier. You'll get more than the stock Frontier, but not very much. The difference in LCA length isn't all that much. You might squeeze an extra inch of downtravel and 1/2" of uptravel.

Let's be clear, the primary point of this swap is the added strength of the stronger diff in the Titan, and the extra track width that everyone loves on 4x4s. The increase in travel while a good thing, is only a very small side effect.

In order for it to be really be worth the cost and effort, you'd need to be buying longer travel aftermarket suspension for a Titan and only using stock Titan parts where needed for compatibility with the Titan suspension. This is not by any means a simple or cost effective swap vs buying a different vehicle. It's a band-aid for buying the wrong vehicle that would have cost less for the same thing had you bought a different vehicle.
>>
>>17015587
The travel comes from hoops and coilovers in addition to the wider track width. Frontier suspension downtravel is limited by coil bucket contact with the upper control arms.

Longer throw coilover shocks mounted to hoops and a bed cage combined with wider track Titan Lower control arms nets a substantial boost in travel.
>>
>>17015603
>bed cage
herp derp engine cage
>>
>>17015603
Still not going to be 16" with the factory suspension components even if the coilovers support it. You'll break balljoints and TREs and grenade CV axles if you tried to actually use even close to that much travel.

The LCAs are only 1.5" longer so realistically that's only a gain of about a 1/2" of downtravel and 1/4-1/2" uptravel depending on where the bump stops are.

Like I said, travel is not the primary point of the control arm swap, which is quite a bit more involved than it sounds at first.

In order to get near that much travel you're going to be dumping a LOT of time and money into it. If your primary goal is travel, SFA is going to be the easiest and cheapest means of getting that much travel.

>And neither should you be. might as well get a Honda Ridgeline or Escalade at that point :^)
Nonsense. They're brilliant. They provide a damn sight more cargo capacity than their SUV relatives and for this purpose they're perfect for camping.
>You cannot camp with a shortbed unless you have a RTT, though.
Problem with that is using your SUV for sleeping quarters severely limits your ability to take supplies, unless you build a false floor that's half the depth up to the roof space.
When roll out swags and tents are so cheap and easier to set up than it is pulling everything out of the wagon to sleep in it, there's really no reason to be sleeping in your vehicle for anything more than a couple of nights away.
My ideal setup is a swag underneath a roll out awning for a bit of sheltered standing room.
>>17015541
While the LC Troopy does fit them, it's still fairly easier loading bikes with the access of an open bed. Did it with a Delica a few times and it works good enough, but is still much easier with even a CC/SB with the tailgate down. Short of a van or mentioned LC Troopy there's no chance in a regular SUV.
>>17015287
>I also drove the R52 monstrosity but we're not going to talk about that unibody mom-mobile...
Rofl, still has me beat why Nissan didn't adapt an SUV variant of the new D23. With production completely ceasing of the Y61 Patrol and now with the R51 giving way to the glorified R52 Altima wagon, there's only the battleship sized Y62 left for the 4x4 SUV options.

Just did a mixed city, highway driving, and heavy traffic driving. Got 350km out of 55 litres (constantly. So mixed is around 15.7 litres / 100km. That's 15 MPG exactly of mixed drivings after upgrading 28 inch tyres to 32 without regearing.
On stock Taynger, she got 400 km to 55 litres. so she was sitting at around 17 MPG mixed driving.

On the long haul highway, I constantly get 460 km out of 60 litres. So that's around 18 MPG after the tyre upgrade of highway driving at 120km/h. Something is wrong here... I think I should be getting more than that.

Let's see what I get when I change the spark plugs.

>>17015868

>>
>>17015657
Escalade is brilliant for reasons other than an offroader. But both those vehicles were just facetious remarks made at the context of our discussion...

Yes. It doesn't limit your ability to take more and more supplies which is what a bed is fantastic for. So I guess the RTT or other bed would be it.
Someone on /out/ built a drawer system for packing things on the wheel well levels and sleeping above a carpeted top covered by one of those larger camper shells. I would totally do that if I didn't need the full size of the bed.

I suppose the LC trooper or a pickup is indeed your best case scenario. If you can find a Land Rover Defender or an old G-Wagen, I could recommend those. But otherwise, you're fully right.

Don't be an offroad van. Those command stupid pricing nowadays.

Also Nissan didn't do it because everyone they have hired in the past 4 years have been absolutely horrible except for their marketing team. Look at the Juke, Murano, R52, that cube thing... FUCK they used to be so good.

For a company that was once the staple global 4x4 competitor next to Toyota, it's pretty sad.
On the upside, as an avid Mitsishitti 4x4 nut, it looks as though the Nissan-Renault alliance is looking to base the next Pajero/Montero model off the current Y62 platform. Which is better news than the discontinuation of the fullsize Paj I was expecting...
Just remains to be seen what engine options become available. Fingers crossed for a more modern industrial based diesel to replace the old 4M4x diesel.

Back to the point of a bunch of tryhard "look at me I'm serious about offroading" equipment to make a Subaru capable of the same trails (albeit taking twice as long) as a stock SUV without any of that equipment.

BUT the stock SUV doesn't scream "look at me I'm serious about offroading"

The car came with tires too large for the stock lovation. If you read >>>17017462 you would know that I have a tire carrier on the way as well to move the tire to the outside of the vehicle so that I don't have to fuck with it while camping and so the dogger has more room to move around.

Good god you are such a fucking poser. You're like those girls who buy a pair of pink DCs and then hang out in the corner of the skatepark hoping someone will talk to them.

I wasn't whining about it. It's challenging but it's fun. You go ahead and find me a new SUV that I can fit motorcycles in the back of and I'll certainly consider trading.

Nope, that'd be somewhere that uses made up metrics based on tripe like a "foot" or "one twelfth of a fraction of".
Again, something less than three metres please.
>>
>>17019811
Not him.... But you count the back seat as "storage space" on the suv, but not the truck?
>>
>>17019811
>length is the only geometrical measurement
That geometry isn't as simple as you are.
>>
>>17019811
What about ceiling on the Suv, and no ceiling on the truck?

Theoretically a truck could stack higher and wider than what you could.
>>
>>17019840
This.
EVEN taking a bed cap into account, the bed space with a styleside is more accommodating than the rear of an SUV.
Also worth noting the bedcap still allows access from all sides, thats before taking into account it's removable.
>>
>>17019820
Seat folds flat in the SUV, allowing the entire area to be used as a continuous bed. There's nothing you can do about the wall between the backseat and bed unless you buy an Avalance or ESV.

>>17019840
You can in theory stack higher in the truck, but securing it is more difficult and more important since it's no longer enclosed. Not really any wider you can go with a truck bed unless you're just moving shit around a farm, in which case you probably want the cargo area separate and easy to clean anyway.

>>
>>17019983
Rear seat doesn't fold flat in a lot a crew cabs and in most extended cabs. You can't really compare a 4x8 flat stable surface to putting something in on the back seat and hoping it doesn't roll into the floor when you hit the brakes.

Back seat is fine for groceries, but if that's all you've got, then you don't really need to be in this discussion since you're never going to use that much space anyway.

If you want a put a couch, bed, desk, skid of anything, floor planks, 2xs, etc into your cargo area then the continuous cargo space is the only thing that matters.
>>
>>17020026
... but what if you need to remove that wheel?
>>
>>17019930
>but securing it is more difficult
It isn't, it's usually easier.
>and more important since it's no longer enclosed
That's bullshit. If anything it's more important to secure a load within the same space in which your body is sharing it.
And truck beds are indeed wider and less obscured by interior trim.
>>
>>17020026

>>
>>17020040
I'm looking into exhaust jacks, or an actual off road bumpers with jack points on them. I mentioned both of these already.
>>
>>17020038
>>17019811
If your sole qualifier is cargo length, why are we not comparing a regular cab?
>>
>>17020038
>the only thing people ever move are 4x8 sheets of plywood

I can fold my rear seats up and fit in a full size dog crate with two dogs in it while comfortably sitting a person on the other side of the rear seat, and fit four full suspension mountain bikes and a shitload of gear in the bed even with a topper on. I have had to transport 4x8 sheets of wood exactly zero times in my life. so it works out great for me. but I appreciate your concern.

I said it's better ratio, I didn't say that SUVs universally have more cargo space than pickups and are better for every situation. Fuck off retard.
>>
>>17020007
I'm just asking the platform is cheap, I can dump 15-20 in modifying it
>>
>>17020096

And as a number of us have pointed out, that "ratio" only considers one single metric with an awful lot of oversights.

Only considers the most important metric for most situations, and not metrics that are the same, nearly the same, or don't matter in most situations.
>>
>>17020125
>wheelbase
>bed length

>made up metrics

I understand you're just trying to defend the decision you made, but come on. Accept the possibility there are other options that work as well or better.
>>
>>17020128
oh so the height of the cargo area of a Tahoe and that of a pickup with an open bed are nearly the same? now I get it. and in case nobody has broken the news to you yet, you can also buy a pickup with an 8' bed.
>>
>>17020136
I meant that the wheelbase: cargo space thing made up earlier was pure bullshit. I understand that everybody has different needs and I got what worked for mine. if mine don't work for you, and something else does, well then it's a good thing you don't have the same as me. I'm still just trying to figure out why I was told that I needed to die because I have a topper.
>>
>>17020138
No, that's just one that rarely comes into play.
Next you're going to tell me that SUVs are useless for cargo because they wont fit a slide in camper.

I didn't tell you that you needed to die, that was someone else. I just commented on the fact that SUVs typically have more usable cargo volume than pickups per given wheelbase.

That's what they want you to think. They usually wait until someone mentions a Suburban so they can start shitposting. When that doesn't happen they just accuse someone of having a Suburban and start shitposting about them. It's pathetic, really.

I usually wait for someone to say something stupid about suburbans, like that they get 20 mpg before I shit on them.
>>
>>17021305
The diesels will easily get 20mpg. If it runs perfectly and is configured right, you can squeeze that out of a 92-99 small block on the highway if you watch your speed.
>>
>>17021333
I believe the diesels can get 20 and maybe getting close on a good day with a stock height stock tires small block, but with a lift and big tires there's no way.
>>
>>17021357
I've only seen one post with someone claiming 20+ out of one with a lift and big tires, and that post was obvious satire.
