Why in the fuck did they allow the front seats to suck so badly for people in the back. The handle on the side that you pull to adjust the angle of the seat can't be used to free the rear seats from their imprisonment.

When they literally became just Chevrolet with a different badge instead of altering any aspects of the car, they lost it to me. Yeah, the Trans Am was a fully developed brand by the point it was killed, but it became the same as the Camaro at the end and most people realized that. The Aztec had no real look-alikes on the Chevrolet side, but it was so ugly no one would really want one. The Sunfire had the looks to work, but why buy the Pontiac version when the Chevrolet one was like $1000 cheaper I think. The Bonneville and Grand Prix had great upper trims, but their lower trims are absurdly bad. Even the upper trims suffered from the 90s GM plastic interiors, because they'd be damned if anything competed with Cadillac or Buick.

Just my ramblings, nothing more. Love my car though, despite it's faults.

Not everyone loves them, I enjoy the character it adds to the car, but hate that it does rub when I add weight to the car (a passenger). New tires just got ordered and will be here on Thurs, with new stock wheels. I'll agree the wheels are a bit of a downgrade, but they were cheap for the condition they're in and why not go back to stock?

I actually kinda like the stock wheels on the early 4th gens. Almost bought a 94 formula a year ago but it was trashed. Interior was completely fucked, trans was leaking, holes rusted through the floorboards, the works.

everyone forgots about grand ams :(
>>
>>16994192
Grand ams were eclipsed by the grand prix, especially the gtp. If they had stuck a 3800sc in the grand am, it would have been a huge success.
>>
>>16994192
Because the Monte Carlo and Grand Prix were more exciting, the Grand Am is useful for me (Blue Firebird owner above) just because I can take parts from it to -SLIGHTLY- up my engine's performance.

The 3800 is shit
>>
>>16994216
The 3.4L L36 in the Firebird and the 3400 in the Grand Am are not the same. The cylinder heads in the 3400 are much less restrictive and slot in fairly easily. The cams can also be swapped, though I've yet to see anyone receive any performance from doing this.

Grand Am's 3400: 185hp, 210lb/ft
Firebird 3.4L V6: 160hp, 200lb/ft
Some daring people will take the supercharger from other engines and put in on there after swapping the heads to get to I think ~230hp.
>>
I had a 1993 Grand Prix. It was fun, but a piece of shit, no less.
>>
>>16994245
Of course, all of that is for pre-1997 Firebirds, like mine. The 3800 V6 that came later is better than the 3400 from the Grand Am in every way.

Huh, didn't realize they used the 3.4 in the old 4th gen v6s. Thought they all had 3800s. If you've still got the original motor I bet you could pop a 3800 in there without too much work when it dies

1993-1995 got the 3.4L. They switched to the 3800 in mid-1995 so early 95's had the 3.4 and later ones had the 3.8

>>16994280
>I bet you could pop a 3800 in there without too much work when it dies
nope. WAY hard. The 3800 is completely unrelated, sharing only the transmission bolt pattern, so custom mounts would be required, if not a complete custom sub-frame. The wider angle of the 3800 also makes fitting it in there a pain in the ass.
>>
>>16994309

OK. since you morons seem to want to circlejerk over the 3800, allow me to enlighten you.
The 3800, from a design standpoint, is trash and the only reason anyone ever remembers them is for the forced induction variants.
The 3400 used in the Grand Am is a superior engine.
The 3400 has:
>A 60* V angle. This makes it perfectly balanced internally and as such, does not require a balance shaft like the 3800.
>a better firing order. The 3400 uses the same 1-2-3-4-5-6 firing order of Nissan's VQ V6's and the Nissan GTR's VR V6 engine. As such they sound sexy with an exhaust. The firing order on the 3800 was a band-aid to sooth a rough running engine so it sounds like shit no matter what.
>The 3400 and its siblings were designed as V6's from scratch. The 3800 is LITERALLY a Buick V8 with 2 cylinders chopped off.
>Aluminum heads and splayed valves. While you can get aluminum heads aftermarket for the 3800, they won't have splayed valves and they won't flow as well as the 3400's
>in fact, the 2.8/3.1/3100/3400/3.4/3.4 DOHC/3500/3900 are better at making power per their displacement than the 3800.
To illustrate, the 3900 was only .1L larger than the 3800, naturally aspirated, and matched the supercharged 3800 for horsepower.

The 3800 is shit and I wish the 3800 meme would die. The only reason it was in production so long was because it was reliable and was dirt cheap to make, even cheaper than the 60* V6's.
>>
>>16994403
>The only reason it was in production so long was because it was reliable and was dirt cheap to make, even cheaper than the 60* V6's.

I know they're not the same. I have a DOHC variant.
>>
>>16994433
Because the 3800SC can be found already sitting in many cheap cars and can be miked for 300+whp for very cheap. That's the whole point of using it for performance-it's incredibly cheap. Buy a gtp for 3k, put another 3k in it and bam, you've got a 12 second car for 6k
>>
>>16994452
It blows people minds on random forums and local greets when I try to explain that no, they're not the fucking same.

>>16994403
>>16994433
Because 200hp is good enough for most people, and supercharging the thing can get you to 260, which most view as either "enough" or a lot. It's also really cheap and easy to get there, whereas getting there with my 3.4L L32 would cost a lot more and require more know-how than most have.

Do it in blue with white stripes offset to the drivers side, and have the wheels done in either blue, white, silver or black.

Back before sponsorships affected racecar paintjobs, racecars were painted to reflect that nation's racing colors. That's why British Racing Green is a thing. America's racing colors were blue with white stripes or white with blue stripes.

My mother still owns a 2004 grand prix and it hasn't caused too much trouble - just an alternator, wheels (they leaked), window regulator and HUD... but she takes super good care of it and I don't even think it has 40k miles yet.

Was thinking about going that route, but I do like the Recaros, even if for whatever reason, the passenger isn't powered. If I could find a turd-gen manual track at the P&Ps usually hit up, I'd be alright, but both types of third gens are pretty rare down here in the south to find in yards.

Plus, usually when they get into the yards, they're usually stripped out in a day or two. Makes life miserable when you need specific shit you can't buy new or re-manufactured nowadays.

Aside from the thrashed seats, the rest of the interior is pretty mint, barring the missing visors and missing headliner. It needs some work on the drivetrain and exterior, but nothing too surprising for a 33 year old car.

I can only say that I'm thankful I bought it from a guy who has had many of these; with this one being one he's owned since the early 90s.

If the 350 shits the bed in the near future, I'll probably look into getting my hands on a 301 to put into it, since it's got the power-bulge hood to clear the air cleaner on the carb. I've read a few stories on guys swapping in 400's into these, but never a 301. Would be pretty neat, I think.

Originally came with the H.O 305 in it, but the original owners kid got a hold of it and BTFO the motor. Guy I bought it from bought a new 79 C10 block from GM and put it inside when he worked at the GMC/Buick/Pontiac dealer we used to work for. Did well for a while, but in the 20 years he had it, he only ever put about 9000 miles on it.

Was sitting around his place for about 5 years before I got it, so naturally, the thing ran like complete ass. Did a lot of overhaulin' so now it will actually run fairly decent, but it's still got it's issues to sort out.

I'll have to see if I can find videos of the 301. Everyone dumps on those motors, but I had a buddy who drove a '79 in highschool with one in his old man's Sundance Yellow chicken. Moved that huge heap of crap well enough that it could stand up to the light duty I'd put it through.

I don't shill the 3400 for the sake of shilling the 3400.
I do it because the 3800 gets too much attention when it is a shit design and a shit platform for making power. I've owned a L67 car. I've also owned a 3.4 car. Guess which one I no longer have? The 3800 gets all the attention because it came supercharged. Guess what? At the same displacement, the 60* V6's make as much power as the supercharged 3800. They are better platforms for making power. Tear them apart and you easily see the 60* V6's are much more advanced. There are features in that engines design that are a rarity among pushrod engines in general.
I may only be one voice, but Showing people a better engine platform for their 90s and early 2000s GM V6 projects is a goal of mine. If said goal helps bring more aftermarket support to the 60* V6's, then so be it.

Milzy Motorsports and WOT-Tech have recently been releasing new parts so there is significant aftermarket support for them, and it is growing. The 3800 market has been stagnant and is slowly shrinking. The only thing the 3800 has over the 60* V6's is factory boost.

I miss Pontiac, almost all their cars were cool when they went under:

G8 GXP
Solstice
G6 GXP
Vibe GT

If only GM axed Buick instead, but they didn't because China.
>>
>>17020390
Buick has become decent now. The verano and regal aren't that bad for the price. But in 2009 it was a total joke.

Pic related was their best offering.
>>
>>17021027
Actually, in 2009, their best offering, imo, was the LaCrosse Super.

Then in 2010, the new LaCrosse came out and wiped the floor with Lexus. When the 2010 LaCrosse came out, I kinda went "OH! That's why Buick still exists"
The 2010 LaCrosse was a game-changing car for Buick.

Trophy 4 was one bank of a Pontiac 389 and that was a real short run mill. The Iron Duke was an engine that's existed time out of mind for GM brass and was its own architecture, as far as I know. Though the only Iron Dukes worth a damn were the Pontiac SD4 versions because those were a revised block casting that came in various amounts of nasty trim.

The electronics in that digital dash are chintzy as fuck. Shame because it's so aesthetic. Worth it if you're willing to redo the entire harness I guess. Or if you're a rich fuck and can afford having someone else do it.
>>
>>17022901
Did all GTAs come with the digi dash? I want one but I'd rather have the analog dash
>>
>>17022904
>The digital dash option, RPO U52, was only available on the GTA in 1987 and 1988, in conjunction with the C67 electronic air conditioning system. In fact, in 1988, this dash set-up was more readily used than the standard analog set-up, with 5,102 cars out of the total production of 9,765 GTAs having this option installed.

>>
>>17031042
>>17031047
The 305 V8 was trash for a number of reasons.
The biggest of which, in my eyes, is its extreme undersquare design (small bore, big stroke). This means it can't rev high, and can't fit larger valves due to the bore so it flows like shit. The entire reason the engine exists is because of emissions. Because of the small bore, it was able to burn its fuel more completely, which made it fairly economical as far as 5.0L engines went.
>TL;DR: economy engine designed for economy can't make power. More news at 11.

The grill is a bubbly kind of look that will still be liked for time to come, where the sky will lose it's glamour. Not to mention, it was very low production, and had a limited coupe model. Also the GXP model had great tuning potential.

>>17034175
I wish the Fiero had survived and we had Fiero/Corvette threads instead of GTR/Corvette threads. Especially if the Fiero only ever used V6's, but outperformed the Corvette due to suspension tuning, smaller size, and lighter weight.
>>
>>17034175
I just can't unsee the camaro's body shape enough personally. I really hate these "turn a camaro into a firebird" mods because while the Camaro and Firebird always shared shit, they at least had distinct personalities to an extent. you could tell them apart. I look at that and I still just see a Camaro
