It's a 1977 Ford F150 Custom. I only paid for the gas to get it back to my house. The person I got it from wanted us to clean up their place so they could sell it. There was this vehicle, a bus, a 1960s Ford Ranger, and two vans. This truck had no motor when I got it and the trans was bad. It became a project for my dad and I. It has a 460 out of an RV with 30k miles on it.

Why do the two door versions of cars cost more than the four door versions? An example I've seen would be old 70s cadillacs.

79 trans am guy again and I had another question about fan clutches. It's overheating at idle and will a fan clutch really help with that? I mean it's not going to spin faster than my fixed fan is it?

Hi 79 trans am guy, i am also a 79 trans am guy. A clutch fan will engage only when needed. This wont help you. The question is why are you overheating.. unless younare running some very high compression your stock fan setup will be up to it.

Time to find the real issue.. water pump or rad.

You could always do a aluminum rad with electric fan setup. Get it out of a 4th gen for am easy upgrade. This will also let some ponies loose as well as weight savings

If you are on a tight budget get a late 90s ford taurus fan and rad from a junkyard. Should be dirt cheap and the taurus fan is rated at a crazy high 4500 cfm. ... that is only if you can live with knowing a ford product is in your gm lol

Since /o/ is full of nothing but shitposting, I figure I can ask you guys.

Have any of use ever used an acrylic or ceramic based sealant/wax for your car? My father has a 1969 Mach 1 Mustang that he and I usually take to a few car shows a year. At the last show we were at, a gentlemen that owns a detailing shop asked my father if he ever thought about putting a 3 or 4 year sealant on his car. He claimed that his acrylic or ceramic based sealant would make it so my father wouldn't have to wax his car for 3 years or more and offers the best possible protection for his paint compared to traditional waxes/sealants. This sounds like bullshit to me, but after googling it it sounds like this stuff could possibly be legit. As it stand now, I wax the Mustang once a month and I just do it the good ol' fashion way. Thoughts?

Blade pitch. A factory style fan will move fan more air at the same rpm than that aftermarket noisemaker that's on it.

As for electric fans almost no aftermarket fans move the necessary volume. There are some used in original equipment applications that move enough air, like the Mark 8, 3.8 Taurus, 4th gen Camaro, but come with their own problems such as initial and continuous amperage draws and control logic. Not impossible to overcome just more research and work.

>>16992838
Look at the fan that's on there and you'll see immediately why it runs hot at low speeds.

How do you guys find tires? The biggest issue is that the car was stored for years (60k miles apparently) and it suffers from tire rot.
>>

Well, you find tires by going to a tire shop. Not too difficult. Otherwise, most vehicle junk yards keep tires that are in good shape. I got a decent set of 4 from my local one for $160

Quick question, could i theoretically put a chevy ls2 engine in a 1978 trans am?
>>
>>16995812
Theoretically you could put a Geo Metro on a Detroit 8V-71.

I don't know why you'd want a 262ci V6 diesel. Unless you want the super economy. And to go slow.
Also it's a transverse FWD engine so you might run in to some issues there. I have no clue if it uses the BOP pattern or the GM 60* V6 pattern.

I have a Weber 32/36 on my 74' shitbox, it starts fine and high revs lije it should when cold, but once its warm the idle is too low and it bogs to death.

Timing, fuel mix and idle screw are adjusted as they should be, but still bogs to death unless a snap of the throttle feeds more fuel.

The carb makes a strange noise like when you suck a liquid through a straw but as if it were clogged.

Would this point to a bad Power Valve? All jets are clean, new fuel filter, correct fuel level inside the carb etc.

Its pissing me off I can't drive my little old car.

>>
>>16999501
lol I figured it out once I saw the spark plugs and the intake runner... And the big open space for the spare tire. Thought it was a rotary at first though.

A little noise from the carb is normal, since there's air rushing past the throttle plate and all.
But what you can do is take a couple feet of hose, and probe around the carb with the engine running. If there's a vacuum leak, that'll tell you where it's coming from.
There's another method of finding vacuum leaks but that involves spraying brake cleaner around the the carb and listening for the sound to change.

>>

Good luck, bro. Post results! Be super careful with the lacquer thinner, it's very easy to ruin plastic and maybe even the original paint. Try to use it sparingly and don't let it sit on the paint if you can help it.

How annoying would it be to own a 1963 VW Beetle?

It has been my dream car since I was 8.

I intend to buy a nice one in a couple years off the internet.

The cost doesn't matter too much, I'm willing to pay about 15k - 20k when I start looking.

Just curious how hard it will be to keep up one even if it is a recent restore?
>>
>>17007668
>Just curious how hard it will be to keep up one even if it is a recent restore?
Just run it every week and keep it in a garage it'll be fine.
>>
>>17007692
I intend to DD it April - November (I live in Indiana).

Would be roughly 10 miles a day with a highest speed of like 55mph.

Will it be alright?
>>
>>17007703
yeah 10 miles wouldn't hurt it.
If you wanted to go on the highway i would consider something that was watercooled and had a bit more power though.

From personal experience, if it is fun when it works it's worth it
>>
>>17007719
The most it would be on the highway would be like 1 exit on 465 (loop highway that goes around Indianapolis).

Speed limit is 55 but everyone runs 80 so I was planning on right lane'in it at 65.

I have a 2013 Beetle for long hauls. It's just been a goal of mine to have one of these suckers so it is on my "to buy" list in the next 2 years.

One more question. Cadillac Coupe de Ville 1960; if I spend about 50k on one that is restored properly in 5-8 years what kind of issues should I look out for?

I heard the old caddys are comfy on highways, my parents live 150 miles north would it be good for that?
>>
>>17007738
I intend to drive the Beetle till it dies to be honest.
I have a 2013 right now and that is not leaving my possession till the repairs are more than she is worth.

The 1963 I will continue to pay for repairs forever.

If I get the caddy I'm a little concerned that will get expensive fast if something goes wrong.
>>
>>17007756
>>17007768
Old Caddy V8s are some of the most robust American engines ever made. My concern would be about the accessories and upholstery.
>>
>>17007794
I don't mind spending more for one that is in total working order because I'm not a wrencher and while it fascinates me I don't want to be one.

My main concern is that even if I buy one that is pretty much restored to better than factory what electronics are going to go first?

I read somewhere the ACs on those 1960 De Villes were great but i'm sure there is a reliability issue with something that old.
>>
>>17007703
I DD'd a 1970 for a few years until I rolled it at autocross, currently replacing the body with one from a 1972 that needs some work.

15-20k should get you something that runs well at the very least, so driving it 10 miles a day should be fine with basic maintinence.
>>

Will lube shops do oil changes on them?

I seriously do not have time to do that shit myself because I fell for the tech meme and we are expected to be available 24/7.
>>
>>17007812
If you swap it to electronic ignition i don't see why it wouldn't be very dependable.
>>
>>17007851
Lube shops should do oil changes on any vehicle pretty much
>>
>>17007851
A lube shop wouldn't have the right oil for it.

You need something with the right additives, I'd recommend using valvoline vr1 racing oil or brad penn grade 1, based on a little research. Also, oil changes should happen every 3k miles and at that time it's a good idea to check the valves clearances too. If you don't have the time maybe a local dedicated aircooled shop will do the work.
>>
>>17007832
>>17007719
Which of these would be a better car? I don't really know what to look for I just know the year.

I have a question, I'm not very experienced with automatic transmissions:

When the duster is in gear (with the exception of neutral and park) it shakes very badly and the revs drop.
It's almost like inching forward using only a clutch in a manual transmission.

the ATF is barely on the dipstick, I assume this is the reason why it shakes so bad all the time?

Also, sharply hitting the gas and getting a nasty bog is an accelerator pump mis-timing right?

It's shaking and barely moving because the idle rpm is too low in drive. Probably has nothing to do with your transmission. Especially because you say it has a nasty bog after sharply hitting the gas.

Check for vacuum leaks, and make sure your fuel system is in proper working order. No I would not first assume accelerator pump.

Just make sure whatever you get can support the amperage your using.

That switch is wrong.
There should be two wires coming off it, one to B+ and the other to the relay. The fuse should be between the switch and B+, not the switch and relay.

What you have there is a sentimental car. It will never be worth the money to restore it, so do whatever you like and enjoy it however you can. If you want to restore it to resell it, you will lose money. If you want to do so for fun, have at it.

Normally, these cars are bought up as parts vehicles and scrapped after everything of value is taken from it. IF you want to make it into a Mad Max hot rod, do it, if you want to restore it, do it. It's worth about $1,000.00 if it runs, so have fun.
>>
>>17033919
100% spot on. I know with the condition of the car most would pass by it but for me it's something to remember my late grandpa by. I don't have no crazy restoration in store for it. Just want to get it in roadworthy condition and enjoy it like he did

I forgot to mention, DON'T use the rattle-cans. Use the brush-on. It's quite a bit stronger. In the picture I posted, you can see some of the area where the flocking from the vinyl top remained and I painted over it; rain was coming in a day or two and I had to get toe top covered beforehand. It's held up unbelievably in the Texas heat for the last 6 months and, after I redid it, it looks good enough that I have no desire to fix it until I repaint the entire car and spray the top with bed liner.

Ideally I'll be painting the whole body, after stripping it of everything that can be practically removed. If the roll/brush on is far better than spray then I'll do that. Using a brush or roller on uneven surfaces or in tight spaces might be impractical though. Maybe I could supplement doing roll/brush on paint over the majority of surfaces with rattlecan where I can't.
>>
>>17036003
Once upon a time, about a year ago, I helped my dad paint his shipping container. Roll-on Rustoleum.
I thinned it about 25% with regular paint thinner and god damn, it took about a week to dry, even in the middle of Arizona summer. So yeah the 50% thinner dude mentioned in his article makes sense.
It still looks fine, but we'll see how it fares after this summer.

One panel at a time, you're getting there. What's the deal with the black divider stripe between the red and white, are you planning on leaving that? Some chrome body side molding along the color divide might look nice.
>>
>>17037801

Originally, it was the actual line they painted over where the red met the white. Some of it is gone, some is still in good shape. I'm probably going to paint a new one a little wider to cover it up.
