W123 was better built, more reliable and had better options
Volvo was more focused on safety. Still pretty reliable and good, but the W123 was absolute god-tier

I think the 200 would win a fight, like smashing them into each other head on.
For petrol i think the w123 will run correctly longer, but the 200 will run longer, but will probably only have compression in 2 or 3 cylinders... but it will run and get you from point a to point b.
For diesel, the w123 will just keep running.

They're honestly pretty damn equal in terms of long term durability, if someone says one is far more reliable than the other, they're just fucking stupid.
240s will have more little shit break and go wrong, but it'll just keep puttin along and will be a bit cheaper to maintain.
W123s are just fucking tanks, plain and simple. They ride better and have much better creature comforts. More prone to rust.
They're both based as fuck, and infinitely better than a boring ass Corolla or Civic in terms of character and aesthetics.

Rust kills both, but, when all things are equal, the Mercedes is a better car. When you are talking about a NA diesel with a stick, the w123 will outlast all of us.
