AC had by far and large the best road cars. So get AC.

Also do note that Thrustmaster shifters are sold separately and cost 150 euros. They're top notch quality but they're expensive.

So cough up ~600 currencies for T500 + TH8 or buy a Logitech wheel.

rFactor 1/2 does not have a yellowbird nor nordschleife up to par

NFS Shift 1/2 suffers from the same problems as pCars

On consoles I suppose you can get somewhat there with GT6/Forza whichever, but on PC you're going AC or none for that experience

I just did a small chunk of basic functionality (classes/functions for player management, prices config file, simple cars/tracks load, AC config file generator, i can run the game with selected (bought) car against other cars now), i already have basic concept of how events mechanics should work, and i feel like someone who could handle visuals would be a great help. Nothing serious, just amateur project with amateur backend guy. It's in java, and interface would be simple 2d thing - could be even in stock javafx, bunch of bitmaps and music in background would probably make it look alive.

Nothing to do with F1 tracks, and most F1 tracks make for terrible GT tracks. It's more to do with the game and mod, some of the tracks were surprisingly good. The mod is of incredibly dubious quality and not the most stable of rFactor mods we've done. Some people with newer systems struggle with rF but I'd say a large reason popularity fell off is because of people getting bored of rF1. I love racing in some of these large grids with really tight racing, but many of us have been using wheels and racing in AC or rF2. I know we still have some controller users (aspi doesn't count btw) but coming back to rFactor after racing the AC Porsche Cup and GT3s will make anyone not want to touch the Ultimate GT3 mod again. Much has been done to mitigate the mismatches and issues with rFactor but it's really shown its age in everything but it's features and robustness that some sims like AC still don't have.

Well, in case you ever decide to make a github I've quickly cobbled together an UI prototype.

It's made in WPF so some not directly compatible with your Java. But there are some solutions:
1- interop/RPC, either by loading the Java bit inside the UI or the other way. Complicated.
2- recode your core classes in C#. IMO the easiest solution, core classes that don't use fancy Java shit should port very easily into C#
3- install a webservice interface (say REST) on your Java engine, can range from easy but unmaintainable and buggy (TcpListener + handmade HTTP parser) to harder but secure and can generate a lot of shit (actual REST server + swagger, or any SOAP server), but gives the most flexibility

webservice interface has the advantage that, if done properly (ie. actual server), it could actually scale and enable player community features (auction house? "drivatars" that let you race against your friends' cars instead of random AI), and alternative UIs.

I already have quite a lot in my beloved java. I'm loading all of necessary cars/tracks data (kunos json handling wasn't exactly top notch so it needed some basic work), assign prices from different file, game can be run and after finish program reads race results+gives money for the race. Events/event groups are easily defined in json files with optional vehicle restrictions, and player garage thing is implemented as well.

All it needs now is proper graphics and later car tuning (that's the only thing in the project i'm really, really hyped for making). And of course content.

I guess i can drop it on github, i'll do it soon.

They added them a good while ago, along with a "lawnmower derby" which was hilarious and piss-easy because you win by just flipping other mowers (which only takes one good hit). Best though was using them in races, the AI opponents couldn't drive them and would immediately do a barrel roll at the first sight of a turn.
They seem to have patched it though, they're way harder to flip and it's a lot less fun now.

The way the director of the game acts online and the way the game operates in general (even when it works fine) gives me absolutely no confidence that Assetto Corsa will ever be anything better than what it is right now. The UI is terribly organized and unresponsive and it has been that way for the game's entire life.

No one at Kunos will stand up and say "Hey maybe we should allow players to set or edit control bindings while in the pits" probably because Stefano Casillo will rip their heads off for suggesting such a pointless feature that will require a rebuild of the entire sim, you know shit you actually have to pay programmers for. Fuck Assetto Corsa.

Yes you would think that however AC will fuck up bindings if your wheel changes USB ports and just reloading the controller profile does not restore the axes.
You can't adjust FFB settings, you can't adjust any graphical options, you can't just drive around for a bit, tweak a setting, and go back to driving, you have to exit the session, wait for the UI program to realize you've left a game, poke the results screen until it goes away, click over to the options menu with its hierarchical subcategories that cannot be interacted with in any way, click through the tabs at the top to find the section you want, change it, exit the options menu, click Multiplayer, wait a good 10-20 seconds for the server list to populate before you can actually start typing your search query then get back to the server while waiting whole fucking seconds before clicking a menu item and that menu item actually displaying the requested information with an Apple-tier menu animation clearly intended to hide the fact that the interface is unoptimized and laggy as fuck.

Then you actually get in the game and real-life production cars have positive live camber values and fucked up asymmetric toe so they will "feel" a certain way instead of actually being accurate. Kunos might as well be Codemasters.
