>stall car
>dad swears at me
Why???
>>
Not really my first time driving stick but

>Today
>At stop light
>Smell clutch
>Think it's my car
>Bike in front of me stalls out when light goes green
>It's his clutch I can smell
>>
>>16980094
Guess your thread on /b/ didn't work out?
>>
I picked it up relatively quickly tho I did hold up traffic a few times stalling. Dad taught me how, first few hours I did it was on back roads so the really bad stuff wasn't in traffic, tho I did go highway speeds in 4 and was confused why the revs were so high, but I was too scared to shift on the highway
>>
>be me @ 16
>Dad just got my first car inspected and plated since the previous owner didn't have them
>Have only driven a manual, his Jeep, once
>He's had it parked in gear behind his truck without the parking brake on
>We both get in and before he can say anything I've gone to start it
>Me being the idiot I am plus the excitement I started it in gear
>Car jumps forward and hits his truck

That's been one of our only "don't tell mom" stories to this day she still doesn't know
>>
I still have never driven a stick. I have a motorcycle though - obviously a manual. Are they similar enough, am I going to make it anons? Driving a stick terrifies me
>>
>>16980245
It is not hard at all.
>>
>>16980094
I have two stories. Both involve my dad's old truck. Parents are divorced.

First in CT
>10 y/o
>dad and I at his friends house
>I get tired and want to go lay down in truck
>ask for keys to run radio
>get in, insert key, turn key, starts
>I do not know what "car in gear" even means
>truck runs directly into friends house
>damage surprisingly minor

Second in PA
>I'm 12 y/o
>same truck
>dad and I spent weekend together
>we return to drop me off at moms
>she no home
>dad says get back in truck and we drive through backroads, probably 7 mi away from my house
>he gets out, says slide over, he gets in passenger seat
>tells me to drive home
Only stalled once, right at the beginning. Didn't do too horribly for a 12yo kid I guess

Bonus Third also in PA
>13 y/o
>live in decent neighborhood, young professional families, new development
>neighborhood has block party
>neighbor gets new 99 mustang GT
>he gets drunk
>offers me and friend ride in the car
>drives to industrial park
>does donuts
>gives me the keys
>tells me to do donuts
>friend doesn't get to try
It was great. I was already a car nerd by then so it was probably the coolest thing that happened that year. To this day I don't know what made people think an unlicensed underage kid should be driving their cars but w/e was neat
>>
>first time driving stick
>dad in the passenger seat teaching me the ropes
>stall 5 times in a row
>"you're an idiot, let me show you how it's done"
>we switch seats and my dad tries driving
>also stalls several times
The previous owner put an unsprung clutch in his fucking Accord like what the fuck
>>
How the fuck am I supposed to keep my car at 2500-3000 rpm as I go into 1st gear from a stop? I either fuck it up and cause the car to jerk or I squeal the tires.
>>
>>16980094
>drive stick for the first time
>don't stall at all

Reminded me
>>16980237
>be on that same drive
>manage to make it to next town over without any stalling or major mistakes
>Pull off into some neighborhood for parking practice
>Driving along and Dad says to speed up to 5th
>Dad says to engine brake to third
>Feeling confident in knowing where the gears were
>5th to 1st
>mfw

Still driving that car to this day

Be delicate with the gas & clutch

They modulate, they are not on/off

Some cars have pedals that engage at different places
>>
>>16980245
You're winding yourself up.

Works the same, except you can't slip a car clutch like you can a bike clutch because a bike's is bathed in oil, whereas a car's isn't.

Don't try and force the shifter into a gear and you'll be fine.
>>
>>16980356
>modulate
Not as much as you'd think sometimes. My daughter is learning to drive and she wants my integra when she turns 16 so she's having to learn to drive it. Well it's got a stage three clutch in it which really basically either all in or all out. She's getting the hang of it but it's a process
>>
>>16980320
You just gotta make love to it. Be gentle and find the exact point where the clutch lets out. But don't be too gentle all the time or you'll burn it out. Balance
>>

>>16980404
Thanks for the advice
I've found the point, its just giving the right amount of gas is what I'm struggling with. Ill go practice some more and hopefully have it mastered by the time monday comes.
>>
Just learned today.
>20
>buddy asks me if i want to learn stick.
>stall 4 times because jumped off the clutch.
>able to shift decently well
>get to the point where i can cruise on the highway.
2 hours and a damn good Saturday.
