FAQ:
Can I fit?
>If you're under 6'2" and aren't obese you can fit without modification. If bigger you can do a foamectomy, modify pedals and replace door pulls.

Can I daily drive one?
>Yes most people can daily drive a Miata no problem.

Even in the snow?
>Yes Miatas can drive well in the snow (with snow tires).

How much should I expect to spend?
>Depends on the area, but for a clean title low mileage car:
3k for an NA6
4.5k for an NA8
5.5-6.5k for an NB1
6-8k for an NB2
9-25k for an NC

I'm going to look at a used Miata, wat do?

What would you think about a NB vs a NC as a DD for a first car? I like the fact that the NC has more security features by default (rollbar, side airbags, stronger windshield or so they said in some forums), its bigger and has more hp, but it costs 7-10k eurobucks, while the NB is just 4-5K and is commented as being "a better driver's car than a NC". Also will an aftermarket rollbar make an NB more dangerous? Pic related: NC chasis with a factory rollbar

The NC is the better car, the NB is the better Miata.

Also, as for the rollbar thing, yes.

What does better miata mean? And is that an NB?

imo they don't actually drive that differently

Anyone have any experience with professional rust repair?

Its not that hard to deal with. Get a grinder with wire wheel to see how bad it is. Chances are its not deep. If it is just cut it out with zip wheels on grinder, fluxcore tack in a new piece of 14 g sheetmetal, finish w bondo and rubberized undercoat. All supplies ~ $250ish plus youll be able to take carw of any more rust u come across

Have any of you ever done autocross and/or a track day? I have seen Autocross videos on YouTube and I don't know if it's just me but it honestly looks kinda gay. I don't want to putz around in a parking lot all day swerving through some meme cones like a couple of children playing hop scotch. I want to go to the track. The issue is that the track itself seems kinda lame too since novices have to sit with instructors for the first 5 or so track days before you get approved for solo riding.

On a side note, I also just confirmed with the SCDA that for whatever reason they do not require a roll bar in Miatas. You just need to have an OEM hardtop. So I am kinda hyped on that. Do you guys think it's better to drive my car to the event or trailer it?
>>
>>16969926
Car in the post is an NA.
Also, the NC weighs a lot more, is slightly bigger and taller, and more powerful, so purists don't generally regard it as a "true" Miata. I've driven one and they're a blast, I can't think of anything about it that ruins the Miata feel for me, personally.
>>
>>16970223
thanks, it seems like i 'll get the NC for a test drive then.

My mx-5 (1.6, '00, NB) starts bad with a cold engine. Cranks fine, but doesn't start at the first try. Turn the key back and try again. It cranks, a loud pop from the exhaust can be heard and then a few seconds later it starts. Then the rest of the ride it does just fine. Replaced spark plugs and spark plug wires already to no avail. Now the guys at a miata forum are saying that it could be the fuel injectors. Does anybody recognize the problem?

I'm still not fully grown yet since i'm still young. My #1 fear is growing too tall for a miata. If I do, i'll probably either get a mazdaspeed3 or kill myself.

All ICE have common symptoms.
If your started and wires are fine, it's fuel delivery.
It could be a pump or the injectors. The injectors are a lot easier to confirm than dropping the gas tank.

Ive taken my miata to an auto cross. Going to another tomorrow. They are a blast, parking lot or not. Its more the idea that you can go harder than normal with no fear of hitting other people or breaking rules.

While I wont deny a track is more enjoyable, Most places vary on what is available to use. Around me parking lots are the only events you see. We just dont have many track courses locally, maybe a few drag strips that are considering branching out. The closest track course lost its contract and is renegotiating. So for now its parking lots.

But you sound kind of like a douche anyways. You want to race at tracks only? Look up events that only happen at tracks. It might be a stupid long distance or drive for you, but hey, its a track.

They're almost (almost) identical cars.

The chassis is a little tighter on the NB and some have variable valve timing. The NB is heavier though, and the whole point of a miata is being lightweight. I also think that the NB looks awful in comparison but I certainly am not going to hate on NB owners.

Which B6ZE parts are compatible with the BP?

For example, if I pull a BP from a Protege to swap into my NA6, which Miata-specific parts can I use from the B6ZE and which will I have to source elsewhere?

some forums I've found people who want to swap the NA popups for the NB's fixed lights, it seemed to be a more common topic than the other way around since adding the pop-ups adds weight and complexity.
Personally I like the NB's swoopy fenders more than the NA's soap bar aesthetic, even if the NB headlights are a bit 3rd-gen Ford Taurus (everything was in 1998).

Your rates are higher than the USA because you probably have a bunch of socialized programs that require you to all pay for each other instead of just paying for yourself like a civilized country does. I'd love to drive one out around here but aside from the roads being shitty, all of the truck drivers around here are shitty too. Tailgating constantly and acting like they own the place.

I really want to own a Miata but I'd fear for my own safety every time I went to drive it out here. Should I look at a newer model or just not worry about it?
>>
Always wondered; anyone here who swapped their engine for something stronger? A Miata might not be about the horsepower but if you can have both the Miata experience and the horsepower, why not? Forgive me if this is a shitty question, my love for the Miata has only recently developed.
>>
>>16991474
engine swaps are popular, but i doubt there's more that one person here that engine swapped their miata, especially since it's way more reasonable to turbo/supercharge it if you want power

i was once in a position where i could do a professional swap because i have the money and time, but after some consideration i decided not to, when you have enough money to make a swap you might as well just buy a faster car and not worry about potential problems that comes with the swap

in fact it's precisely what i'm going to do this year, i'll just buy a more powerful car
not selling my miata though, i love the car for what is it
>>
>>16991619
Alright, thanks for the answer. I completely forgot about the existence of turbo/supercharging. I want a Miata but I also want a bit more power than they offer, so I'll have to look into that. Current favorite is a '96 but I doubt I can find a good one nearby for a reasonable price, other models are okay as far as prices go though.
>>
Well it finally happened boys. The first hot day of the season and my Miata shits the fucking bed. I hop on the highway and try to blast the A/C and nothing happens. My radio shuts off and my tachometer starts bouncing all over the place

Congrats anon. I'm amped af for you.

I'm actually picking up the one I linked here >>16978312

Despite 200k on the clock, the guy selling it just really enjoys fixing Miatas. It's a 1994 NA8 with a Torsen LSD. He's done fantastic work to it, got it a new soft top, painted it recently, nearly rebuilt the engine. I was shocked to see it has 200k on it. I went with a friend yesterday and we both drove it and decided it was a great deal. He was firm on $3k but it's the best quality for the price that I've seen. Friend and I are going back next weekend to pick it up. Guy said he'd take the ad down (he did) and he'd keep it in his garage until then. I can't wait to be back in a Miata. Even just the short drive I did yesterday I was smiling. I missed it so much.

On a related note, if a Miata has no AC, can it still push heat? Or are non-AC Miatas just torment in the winter?

Also how difficult are tension cables to install in a soft top?

ALSO, where do you guys put your slaps on a soft top Miata?

But oh, that LSD, that positive turn-in, so light you can engine brake in all the gears and it just grips for days, why do other cars even exist?
>>
>>16995918
what's the proper way, low gear right? What if you're in an auto?
>>
>>16992344
dude the car is nothing if not a rolling good feel generator.
I know a dude in my apartment with a '94 M Edition with ruined paint, a clapped-out top and broken interior trim, but he fucking loves it to pieces. He's got a roll bar and a racing seat and a loud exhaust.

He parks it with the lights up and googly eyes stuck on with a big felt tongue hanging out the grille, right near the entrance so it's the first thing anyone sees as they come home. It actually made me want my own. Then I drove a few and that, friend, is the best feel of them all.
>>
>>16996240
Automatic shifters still usually have control over gear ranges, most autos have a mode that keeps the transmission from advancing beyond 3rd or 2nd gear, and almost all have an L mode that keeps the transmission in 1st and 2nd specifically for descending hills without torching your brakes.
I think a lot of average drivers associate high engine speed (or lots of noise) with engine damage regardless of the redline, which is how you get idiots who don't use these modes.

I used to have a Volvo 850 that responded beautifully to actually using the auto shifter's lower gears in regular driving, it was faster than waiting for the transmission to kick down for overtakes and made accelerating from a stoplight a little more fun.
>>
>>16993748
the engine and transmission make the interior warm in normal operation, if your shifter gaskets are old it will be even warmer and you'll feel the heat of the transmission thru the shift boot and center console.

>ALSO, where do you guys put your slaps on a soft top Miata?
front quarter windows, driver side lower windshield or passenger side upper windshield out of the arc of the wipers, wind deflector, trunk, gas door, etc

I'd only put stickers on glass or a part of the car that can be removed and replaced because if they're on there long enough the paint around them will naturally fade or wear while the paint under them will not and it will look strange when they are removed.
>>
>>16995324

It really is the realest meme. I never thought I'd care about power so little until I got behind the wheel of a Miat. Such a blast to drive.

Maybe Seattle /o/ meetup someday and I'll get to see it. :^)
Grey paint looks great! I'll be sure to post mine once I get it this weekend.
>>
>>16996277
Using noise to determine when to shift isn't always bad. When you just want to drive fuel efficiently, noise is a pretty good indication of when to shift up a gear (provided you're too stupid for/don't have an RPM meter). Unfortunately all the wrong associations are made with it like engine damage. I wonder what these people think the redline is for? Instant breakdown?
>>
>>16996713
It's clearly the line of death which will cause your car to instantly explode.

I had this really fucking loud clunk in my NA whenever I applied the brakes more than around 50% suddenly, it clunked again when I went over speed humps, but only if I caused the clunk by braking before the speed hump. In any case, this thing drove me mad for the best part of 3 months but I think I finally figured out what it was. If you look in the diagram at figure 4, that was the cause of my issue. I tightened up those bolts to spec and the clunk disappeared. The bolts weren't really loose, just maybe 20lbs/ft under spec. I hope this helps out someone because I nearly went crazy trying to find this noise. Luckily it also led me to notice my lower ball joints, and tie rod ends were fucked, so that's a plus.
Make sure to check all your suspension bolts and nuts and make sure they're within spec, it could save you a lot of trouble.

Well, it is a mostly original car with 85k miles on it, some stuff starts to go bad eventually. Previous old man owner just kept fluids in check pretty much. Besides, no winter where I live so suspension bolts don't have the chance to get rusted in place. Mixed blessing

my NA felt so floppy and unsafe until i did full bushing upgrade
>>
>>16996944
That's what I plan on doing next, the wishbone bushings are starting to look worse for wear, and I feel that I should just take it all apart and press in new upper ball joints just in case. They're fine, but might as well. Once I got that in place, poly bushings all around. Then get that oil leak sorted.
Does anyone else seem to always find the area between the tranny and the engine moist with oil? I think the rear main seal is leaking and it's coming out of the little pinhole drain on the tranny, but the clutch isn't slipping at all so I don't think there's any oil in the bell housing. I go through about a quart every 3500 miles maybe.

Well, after some further testing, looks like my alternator shit the bed. The case was completely black from oil or some other substance so it's not much of a surprise I guess. I've spun out plenty of times, both on opium and sober, but I only try powersliding / drifting on corners that I feel safe doing so in. I've spun out easily 50+ times, maybe over 100 but I always know when it's about to happen and mitigate the spin so I've never hit anything, even a curb.

Shit, about 6-7 years ago I was powersliding a wide sweeper (already not a good idea) and the tires all regained grip mid-slide sending me rotating the other direction and I flew off the road going probably 50-60, somehow the alignment was still 100% in-spec. You really shouldn't try to learn drifting if you won't accept that you'll fuck up now and then as you try progressively more risky slides. I might even upload a vid of me fucking up for giggles.

I got the miat in august or september of 20.08. It had been left in someone's back yard just off the coast during hurricane katrina and hadn't been driven since. It was some redneck's wife's car and they still had all the dealer records from 1995 in the glove box.

The undercarriage and bottom of the motor were caked in thick southern mud (the insides of the pulleys were jammed full of mud). The exhaust had sheared right before the muffler which was just dangling. The water pump was fucked / leaking so I couldn't drive it more than 20 minutes without having to give it water. The top was ripped and the interior was moldy, some of the grounds wires were fucked, etc. etc.. But I knew by the package it had that it had the LSD so I grabbed it for $2,200 and now it looks almost brand new.

At age 18 or 19, a few months after getting it, I gave it new belts, a water pump, alternator, cam seals, gaskets, ignition stuff, etc. and it's been running great in the 8+ years and 80+k miles since even though I beat the PISS out of it plus 30+ hours of WOT track time.

I love this car.

And one of me nailing the same corner at (slightly) higher speed:

I've learned to not try powersliding over ~60mph any more, you can't get a lot of slip angle out of a miata on stock suspension / steering and I'm on sub-$50 tires so there's not a lot of room for error.

Is this your car? Did you intend to have the tow hooks painted? I mean, if you like that it's cool but personally I'd unbolt 'em and strip the paint off. Anyway, looks nice. Do those mirrors reduce visibility at all? One of my favorite things about my miata (and I have many) is that the stock mirrors give massive visibility.

yes it's my car, no i didn't intend to have the hooks painted, but i've grown to like them. i know it's a simple process to repaint them, but still

the mirrors took a bit of getting used to from the big stock ones, but they have panoramic lenses, so there's actually a pretty good field of vision

>>
>>17000838
Well then yes to your original question. I'm assuming you know how an engine works - imagine on situation where the the intake valves are only open when the piston is on its exhaust or power strokes in stead of during the intake stroke - the cylinders wouldn't get enough air which would make combustion difficult.

I felt the same when I was looking for mine a few weeks ago, I had a $7000 budget for the car itself, but that would only be reserved for a super pristine garage kept example with super low milage. The problem was those particular examples were all early 1.6 short nose crank models with crank windows, open diffs, etc. I wanted a factory LSD car that had less than 100k that had decent paint and wasn't beat, and the one I went with was a 94 M Edition with 90k miles, original owner, no mods but some expensive maintenance done including timing belt not long ago. That was $5000 and he was asking $5600. I think $5000 is what you need in your hand today to get a decent example.

Sup, br/o/s. I recently bought a nice NB and have some questions.

1) The hardtop does not leak at all, but every time it rains or I wash it, I find some water on the plastic threshold of the driver side door. Is that expected?

2) Compared to the Mazda 2/Demio from the same era (that might use the same transmission, judging by the identical gear ratios and the position of the reverse gear), the shifter is much stiffer. Granted, the lever is much shorter, but still, is that expected, or a sign that I should change the transmission oil or something?

3) Is there any maintenance that would be wise to do right away just in case?
>>
>>17005706

1) That's fine / normal.

2) You may need a shifter rebuild kit and need to change the transmission fluid. I've had to change the shifter boots 2x in less than 100k miles.

3) Change differential fluid, water/coolant, and engine oil. Check the air filter. Make sure that the ball in the PCV valve isn't stuck. Check the tension of the throttle cable. Check break pad wear. Standard new used car stuff. Looks good, I have those same wheels on my NA.

What are my options for not wanting to instantly die in a rollover?

Are roll bars the go-to? They can be found for under $500 and still allow me to have the top down. Or are hardtops the only defense against death? They are ~1k but offer a lot of pros and a few cons.

Opinions? I've heard roll bars make you less safe in a crash? Good idea to put padding around just in case? I'm leaning towards roll bar because of price and ease of ordering.
>>
>>17006431
1 - Most roll bars don't work (you may have already known this) and are there only for "style." There are, however, some that do work and look for SCCA-approved ones.

2 - Think about your chances of rolling over a miata - one of the lowest cars on the street. Yes, many ppl have rolled them driving like asshats into ditches and stuff but seriously consider your actual rollover risk.

3 - And yes, some rollbars are designed with wearing helmets in mind, and you could seriously injure your head/neck in an accident with one of those and no helmet.
>>
>>17006431
A hardtop won't make a difference. They're just a fiberglass shell. They won't hold a 2300lb car.
>>
>>17006935
Yeah no way i'm ordering a style bar. I've found ones that are SCCA approved, mostly hard dog since it's in my budget. I don't worry about flipping my miata on the street, but moreso in the mountains when cruising those narrow roads. I know rollbars aren't guaranteed safety, but I like the additional protection they provide.
