Its pretty obvious and probably the most common advice you'll hear but usually not the thing people buying an occasion really fully check.

Decent toptip for non mechanically inclined people to check the status of a car is to give all the wheels a pretty good wobble and a yank. If there's any play in it its either worn out rubbers or the wheel's bearing that is shot. If the person selling you the car hasn't bothered replacing either you can bet your ass nothing else on the car got fixed.

Service history is completely bunk. Any scumbag could fake an entire book full of maintenance history, and by doing so crank up the price a couple hundreds bucks.

Also, avoid rust like he plague. Check under the boot lining, all corners, wheel wells ect. The way people look for scratches or imperfections in the paint is how you need to look for rust. Check it ALL. Find any? Walk away. Still like the car? Hit the interwebs and look for a rust free one.

I'm going to be a little bit more nuanced than just going straight for racism and sexism. Beta white men who can't operate a jack and lug wrench can be just as guilty of crimes against cars as anyone else. My advice would be look at the person who is selling it. Do they look well put together? Do they look like they have enough money and respect for their property that routine maintenance would be a high priority? Do they seem mechanically inclined and if not do they have receipts showing when maintenance was performed and by whom? The first car I ever bought was a fucking steal. $3500 for a 1-owner 3 series with 150,000 miles, but every oil change every piece of the car's history back to the window sticker and dealer plates were documented and included with sale. Same story with my Outback XT. The type of person who hangs onto to important (or even seemingly unimportant) pieces of paperwork is the kind of person you want to buy a car from. That's the best way to minimize your risk as a secondhand buyer.

Since this thread's about buying used cars, help me out /o/

We're trying to get a new family car, one of the options on the table was recommended by my mom's mechanic (no dad, no one who knows shit about cars). Apparently it was owned by his mom and he kept it in good condition, but she's too old to drive now. Don't know what kind it is (mom didn't ask, I plan on finding out tomorrow) but its 20 years old and going for $1000.

He's apparently a trustworthy guy, but this entire set up seems off. Is it worth looking into further or is there no way that car's gonna be okay?
