I'm fine with SAM talk being in the main thread because it's gonna be hilarious when it never happens....again...not as good as the eventual fatalities from a bunch of people who can't ride trying to impress autists from the internet at the tail of the dragon and dying....but entertaining nonetheless.

Take off fairings. You won't be able to hold on to the bike above 120 and it won't be comfy so you won't want to ride at 120 and be safe at a comfy 60

Learn how to ride slow, first.
I know it sounds wanky, but there's nothing quicker to kill you than a motorbike, least of all one that was built for the track and happens to be allowed on the road.

Get used to reading the traffic, see people glancing in their mirrors before they move, know your alternate lines before you need to look for them in an emergency, look 3 times etc.

Honestly the best way to get used to riding at high speed...is to ride at high speed. The question is where? Of course the, "correct" response is to say at a track only and yes of course....but reality dictates that many many ppl can't afford that. The best I would say is if you are going to ride fast, do so where you can be away from everyone and have a clear line of sight. Make sure there are no places for a car to enter your path (intersections/driveways/etc) slightly downhill is nice because it gives you a great view and you must never crest a hill at speed (you never know what's on the other side of that crest...a slow big-ass tractor?)

Try to do this in a place where the treeline/brushline isn't very close to the edge of the road...because critters can fuck up your day. I'm talking deer, dogs, birds, cats, etc.

IIRC that bike stock should be good for a true 172-5 or so. You can take some of the snap out of the acceleration by gearing longer. it will feel more sluggish and accelerate slower this way but again, nothing will help more than restraint. KNOW that you have a fucking rocket between your legs and that bitch will move. One such potnetial place would be a long open stretch of freeway after sunrise and dry. this way you will have good sight and lots of room with few cars to worry about.

And make sure wherever you go it is somewhere you are familiar. Nothing worse than ripping deep into triple digits only to hit a huge pothole or gravel or tar or whatever. BE FAMILIAR WITH THE ROAD.

At the end of the day, the bike will only do what you tell it to do.

Hope this helps

you will never push ANY bike anywhere near the limit on public roads without making serious compromises on safety

on public roadways you absolutely always have to be prepared for what you don't see, you may be able to take that corner at 60-70mph but if doing so means that you overdrive your stopping distance and there is a truck stopped in the road around the bend then you just fucked yourself.

if you're interested in pushing your ability and your bike you'll want to do it on a closed track where you can control things like animals, traffic, debris, potholes etc.

>>16952434
Tips for building up speed? Roll into it. Acceleration and top speed are two different things as I am sure you know. Relax the acceleration aspect by rolling WFO in 6th instead of banging through the gears. The front won't want to come up this way either. Obviously much slower acceleration but will still get you to your top end. Inversely you will need moar room to accomplish this but it will take away some of the buttpucker factor.

Another thing...when you get used to riding on the freeway at say 80mph and then you hit your offramp and now have to slow down to 40mph it feels like you are going stupid slow right? Apply this concept to riding faster. If you want to get comfortable at say 130mph....roll into it and hit that number plus more...say 160 and then let off back to that lower speed. Suddenly it doesn't seem so sketchy.

BUILD UP to even these speeds. The more you ride the bike the more comfortable you will get with both the top speed and the acceleration. Systematically push the limits while in the safest environment possible.

>>
>>16952434
I mean the list of things that can go wrong is limited, either you hit a car or lose control after hitting a hole/ gravel etc. Other than that the bike is stable and made for going fast. You won't fly off of it or something. That said my bike has only 100hp, doesn't even reach 150mph and I have a well maintained autobahn to go WOT all day

Honestly I think it's easier to ride a bike at 200 than a car at 200. Bikes are more stable at speed, cars feel wobbly and touchy to me at high speeds.

Get a steering dampener if you want to fast, many a rider have died due to hitting a little bump and getting a tank slapper.

I've really enjoyed it, it has served me well but I've outgrown it very quickly. I recently reviewed the 500F which uses the same chassis, is just naked instead and I've got to say it's so much better than the R. Problem is the R is more a light sports tourer than an actual sports bike so if you're a knee dragging dickhead like me, you've got the mod the ergos a bit to be able to ride it like that because it has very easy to reach limits.

I liked the F because it doesn't try to be something that it isn't, and it's a better bike for it.

Any UK lads here? Can you estimate the daily cost of renting a motorbike in the UK?
>>
>>16952636
Its honestly not as bad as what some reviewers make it seem to be.

Im a 150lb skeleton though so that probably helps. Might still throw on a zx10 rear shock this winter but its fine for now.

Cant do a tail tidy, cops here have hateboners for motorcycles and will seriously pull you over and ticket just for modifying the stock reflectors.
>>
>>16952731
Where the hell do you live?
>>
How do I adjust my rear shock correctly?
Only by manual or can I "feel" the right setting?
I have some weird stamping marks on my rear tire that look like the tire bounced in a corner (or the street was just bad). Sadly I didn't take pictures of it, maybe I find something on google

Also it's the fz6 if that's of interest

Practice applying it after the wheel comes up so you build muscle memory when it starts to go haywire.

You should just have your foot ready over the brake usually, not constantly pressing it.

When you get more comfortable with it, practice leaning back with the bike a bit and holding on the throttle. The first time you hit BP will scare the shit out of you, but don't try going that far back for a couple months at least... Unless you have a cheap dirtbike then go bananas.

Gloves? Leather gaunlets with sliders, yes, you need some. Other gloves? Might as well wear something purely cosmetic.

Armor? The most important thing. Ask yourself "do I want road rash and a gnalry scar? or do i want a deep soft tissue injury that will never heal right and possibly broken bones?"

Pants? Jacket? Does the armor actually stay in place because your legs may not be in the "riding position" while you crash? Are they leather or proper textile? Yes. No? Fuck it.

Motorcycle gear is either a fashion statement among anti-squids who have $99 to blow an a cyclegear in town or actual safety gear. Don't mix them up.

Anyone care to recommend some clean, classic looking full face helmets? The thing is that I'm Euro and although I don't explicitly need ECE in my country, a lot of abroad legislations are anal about it, so the ever so popular Biltwell Gringo is out of the race. The Bell Bullitt has too much of a face opening and too narrow of a chin portion for my taste. The only other ones I can think of are the DMD Rocket (general Gringo shape but with a flip visor), the Premier Trophy (similar to the Rocket but with a larger face opening) and the attached DMD Racer (button sunvisors/visors optional). Anyone have some experience with these or at least has read about them?

Guys like this bloke give out lots of advice on safety gear. It's mostly from the perspective of a pussy who has never had an off at speed.

I've gone down hard in a jacket and jeans and once in a full gimoto suit. Broke a femur in each incident, plus other shit.

Top of the line (read: not off the rack, custom made alpine stars) gloves: broke most of the fingers in my hand. Three fingers still held together with metal plates+screws.

Gimoto suit was cut off me on site: broken femur, fibula, a couple of toes in the foot, etc. I think a rib or two went as well.

Other incident was jeans and a dainese jacket (off the rack). Broken femur, ruptured spleen, broken foot, fibula, soft tissue injuries, etc.

FYI on the first incident I was geared up to the nines. Back protector, custom italian suit, gloves were custom and roo skin, boots were $800. Still ended up with internal organ damage and all that.

Anyone that tells you that gear will stop soft bits from bursting open when you hit hard stuff is talking out of their arse. On a racetrack, sure, but you just slide there for the most part. On the road, you hit a telegraph pole and you sever your spinal chord and knock a rib through your lung.

Gear won't do shit for you in a road crash except spare you some gravel rash. Those back protectors aren't meant to handle telegraph poles - a mate of mine was wearing one and hit a car dead on - quadraplegic now.

All that said, just have fun and wear gear that you're comfortable in. More important to be comfortable and in control than saddled with $10K worth of safety gear that won't save you from the emergency room anyhow.

Sure, why not? Mainly picked a white example because it's a good neutral color for evaluating shapes, and because most of the other options have silly fucking patterns or textures on them.

Also I generally lean towards bright colors for basic visibility without having to wear a neon fucking vest. White in particular doesn't clash with colors on the bike.

one of the makers covers it in their FAQ, that it takes 40lbs or so to trigger, so it dosen't happen by accident. Or so they say.

Looks like the co2 canister is about $20 to replace, about the same as for inflatable life vests.

I wore pic related style when they were new. Those goggles kill peripheral vision. The wind noise is nasty. I don't wear or seek out that shit today.

Since you don't look at yourself when riding I recommend a modern, comfortable decent quality helmet. I appreciate that you want to look like me when I was a lad because the world is divided into me and those who wish they were, but that old shit went away for good reason.

Car owner considering a bike here in Florida. A few questions if you don't mind answering (had most answered alrady).

Is it possible to comfortably ride in heavy rain/downpour?
How does hydroplaning resistance on a bike compare to that of a car with "similar" performing tires?
ABS, good or bad?
For the more mature of us with families... who is a good choice for life insurance for accidental death and rates?
>>
>>16953204
>It's necessary when chain adjustment forces you to crouch down on a dodgy knee (trust me).

Don't crouch to adjust shit at axle height. I use old children's school chairs turned backwards and five gallon plastic pails as work seats.

Gearwrenches are VERY nice for running adjusters in and out.

To get bike in air I have two Bulldog jacks, both purchased used. Uglier is better for the price. J&S jacks are also excellent. Piss on little Harbor Freight jacks.

>Honestly never had it happen, I ride in all weathers in the UK, so not sure if the conditions are comparable, but things like manhole covers, painted road markings etc are your main concern in the wet really.
>ABS, for a new rider? Good, no question.
>>
>>16954258
Rain is shit, even with good gear you will be carrying water with you. But you can ride well enough I guess. I have only ever had a bike, so I just have to live with it.

As for hydroplaning, I never felt it. But I've never gone fast enough for it to affect me as then stopping would most likely wash me out.

ABS on roads is far better.

Knife isn't remotely fedora tier if you use it. I wear out Leatherman 300 multitools (praise be to Kek for the lifetime guarantee) despite having a very well equipped home shop including welders and machine tools.

I don't usually carry like OP but it's wise if you have to work in or travel through some areas. Many of my vetbros and copbros carry. In the US it's like having a fire extinguisher. Better to have and not need than need and not have. I've deterred assault at my country house without firing my rifle, and such use is common in America.

Good people don't cause problems when they carry. Niggers do, and they already are undeterred by laws against their favorite pastimes such as theft, robbery and murder.

Periodic maintenance and cable inspections are wise. One broken strand is cause for replacement. Typical failure areas are near the cable ends.

My Striple insurance is cheaper than my CBR500R insurance. So even though the Striple essentialy has a Daytona engine (bore is a little smaller), it's considered a standard bike because of the lack of fairings, and thus cheaper. It's so stupid and awesome at the same time
>>
>>16955429
I was generalizing. Stock CB1100 bars should also be confiscated and replaced by clip-on masterrace.

Best repair method for UJMs is to unbolt the license plate, slide the UJM out of the way, then replace with a proper sportbike.
