What's a good car for road tripping around the U.S?
Under 8k, prefer under 6k
And something American preferably old and/or convertible

You want to spend that much for scrap?
At least buy something you could sell at the end of your trip and get some money back.
Convertible SN95 GT or maybe even a foxbody would do you good
I'm planning on eventually selling it and heading to South America

C4 Corvettes are cheap and in your price range. I'd look into some 1975-1984 cars. They are usually the cheapest. Consider third generation Camaros and firebirds too. They have T-tops
Are any of the cars mentioned even remotely practical for a roadtrip?

Late 90s full size upscale or luxury sedan with a bench seat and airbags.
Isn't it the case that if you don't have an address you can't register a vehicle in burgerland.

If they're in good condition, sure. They wouldn't get the ideal gas milage but it sounds like OP has money. These all take regular gas and shouldn't be more than $2.50 a gallon in most areas.

I drove the U.S from Maine to California in a 2002 Buick Century that cost me $1000.
Any car can do it.
