This is the dashboard for the Brazilian VW Gol MK3. I don't see much blue dashboards around anymore, and I think this is one of the best ones ever. Pretty concise and complete.

The reason why is that most people don't know about it or don't care. An idiot light will suffice for them, but if you're tracking your car and want to have the information available there's no other way.
It's the same reason shit like oil temperature and coolant temperature sensors are either missing, in the case of oil temp, or horribly inaccurate, in the case of coolant temp. If you're sitting on the highway in a stock car it's probably fine, so it's cheaper not to include this information. A car that sees the track though is a different matter.
