How do you keep your truck so clean and rust free?

I live in the rust belt and my truck started getting surface rust after 5 years

Engine bay is no good place to judge it for rust

This one has been kept decently clean for the length of the last ownership. Its first few years was spent driving around in the salty hell of Oslo and its areas, but the last 10 or so have been relatively saltless as its in my area. Still, it had a very light "coating" of rust on the underside that I've cleaned up as well as I can, sealed and properly proofed

But your trucks body (If I'm recalling correctly) is rust free.

That is mind blowing considering It's age and the age of my truck. Mine is 17yo and has bad body rust and I only drive it it half the year and I've kept it immaculate since new (rinse it off every time it snows and after driving on dusty salt roads).

Already had to replace the entire exhaust from rust

It wasn't 100% rust free - the rear had a little bit of rust on it, and the front bumper had two rust spots that turned out be actual holes just held together by biscuit-rust

And if you're even more curious; here is one of the holes in the front bumper. Currently just secured and filled with metal-filler, and painted with a laughably bad "Chrome effect" rattlecan. I'll probably just end up replacing the whole thing at one point, aswell as the rear hatch (its rusty on the inside I think)

How long were you picking rust out of your hair?

Looks a lot better though.

I also had to replace my hatch with one from the same year white XLT. It rusted shut somehow and I had to cut though it to open the lock from inside the hatch.

I never open the hatch except the window so I guess after 4 or 5 years it rusted more and more and then rusted shut

Dude, I owned a W202 Mercedes... this rust is a fucking cakewalk in comparison. Its so light and has done so little damage its joyful work

If you get it cleaned up then I recommend just spraying some sort of silicone-based lube on paper/piece of cloth and rub the where the hatch meets to prevent the rubber from sticking.

As for the locks, hinges and whatnot; high-viscosity motorcycle chain lube. Penetrates, lubricates really well and lasts for a loooong time - and it does not gather dirt and dust as much as other lubes
>>
>>16937033
I have been using lithium grease, Seems to work. I keep opening it from time to time so that doesn't happen again.

I didn't think to lube up the rubber. Makes sense

Thanks!

Lithium grease works fine - its just a hassle that you have to take apart whatever you're lubing and coat the individual parts that are in contact with eachother to make sure its greased. With the motorcycle lube you can just spray it inside and keep on spraying to ensure that it gets enough in, where it will divide itself into the different parts and coat whatever it can reach

It's only really the front, (pop-ups) and the rear window.
Anyway, I just mean't that if you want an LSx powered '90s sports car with pop ups, why not buy a c5?
It's not like fds are cheap or anything, especially not after a decent engine swap.
>>
>>16938020
Agreed completely. The main difference is that I really wanted an FD in high school and never wanted a Corvette. Also, I can build an LS motor in my garage and have no idea what to do with a rotary, I want to put miles on my car.

That's fair enough, half the reason the car appeals to me is the rotary, even if it is notoriously unreliable. (the rest of the appeal is obviously the amazing looks, which a v8 one still has)
>>
>>16938020
Eh. Fd bodies can be pretty cheap these days, no where near as cheap as a miata, civic or rx8 though. About the price of a ded c5 or 240sx in nc, so around 2-6k.

Grit blaster, steel brush, compressor/gun, and paint thinner to clean

Sealant was some stuff on an unmarked can that the workshop owner said worked great. Seemed like a type of penetrating oil that dried out and left a thin layer of sealant. We'll see

Top layer is just standard dissolvant-free underbody rust protector on rattlecans

Rear axle halfway through treatment
>>
>>16940833
So you're not using any product to convert the rust? You are literally just covering it up and sealing it. I'd look into the por 15 or rustmort I mentioned, not sure how available it is in EU

Good on you for actually taking a wire wheel to the pitting though.

Its a tad too much to properly seal. The sealant I put on is an actual seal and it stays, but its not a converter

After cleaning it was more than smooth and clean enough for such a light treatment. If I was to be completely anal I'd remoce the propshaft, rear axle, springs and bed, completely clean with a more powerful blaster & flapdisc, repaint and then coat in protector
