Hondas aren't slow tho. They're average at best.
The main appeal is that 250 WHP in a 2,500 Lb civic is the same as 350 WHP in a 3,500 lb muscle car
And factoring in drivetrain loss, cost of parts, cost of cars, and cost of ownership, the civic will be cheaper to build and own, assuming nothing goes massively wrong.
And if all else fails, I mean, I can easily write off my 3k civic when I fuck it up racing, can you do the same with your mustang?
